The Teatro Vascello is open and in full season: it is at Via Giacinto Carini 78, in Monteverde Vecchio, and is the home of the Fabbrica dell'Attore, a company founded in 1974 by Manuela Kustermann and Giancarlo Nanni and recognized by the Ministry and the Lazio Region as a theater production center. Since 2010 the artistic direction has been Manuela Kustermann's. A full-price ticket costs 25 euros, and sales go through the box office, by phone and through the VivaTicket circuit indicated by the theater.

It is a research theater, not a repertory house. The program mixes contemporary drama, rewrites of the classics, dance and foreign companies, with many in-house productions and co-productions. The hall has 356 numbered seats, carved out of an old disused cinema that the two founders transformed and opened in 1989. The surrounding neighborhood is the residential one that climbs toward Villa Sciarra and the Janiculum, far from the tourist traffic of Trastevere.

Data verified on September 29, 2026 on the official website of the Teatro Vascello, in the pages on ticketing, season, history, company, accessibility and directions, and on the other sources cited later in the text. The theater does not publish foyer opening hours different from those of the box office, nor a coat check service. For everything that does not appear online, the channel to use is the box office, at 06 5881021 and 06 5898031.

Where it is and what you really see

Via Giacinto Carini is a street of small apartment buildings and trees in Monteverde Vecchio, the part of the neighborhood that leans on the west side of the Janiculum. The theater gives as a parking reference the walls of Villa Sciarra, about 100 meters away. From here the hill continues toward Porta San Pancrazio and the big park of Villa Doria Pamphilj, while on the other side you go down toward Trastevere.

From the outside the Vascello has nothing of the Italian-style theater. No colonnade, no monumental facade. The building began as a neighborhood cinema in 1946, according to the reconstruction published by Teatro.it, and still presents itself as an entrance on the street among the neighborhood's buildings. Anyone who arrives looking for velvet, stucco and boxes is thrown off. Anyone who wants a wide stage and a hall designed for seeing the scene well finds exactly that.

Inside there is a single main hall with 356 numbered seats, upholstered seats and carpet, according to the technical sheet published by the theater. The stage measures 15 meters by 11.80, with a proscenium opening up to 14 meters wide. These are generous measurements for a hall of this capacity, and they explain why the Vascello often hosts dance and shows with many performers on stage. Nine dressing rooms with showers complete the part the audience does not see.

What you really see, then, is the program. The Vascello is one of the places in Rome where the names of Italian experimental theater and some international companies pass through, with runs of a week or a little more. It is not a place to visit like a monument, outside show hours. You enter with a ticket, in the evening or on Sunday afternoon, and the foyer comes alive in the hour before the start.

The most useful geographic reference is Porta San Pancrazio, at the top of the climb of Via Garibaldi. From there the historic city is left behind and the residential neighborhood begins, made of villini, apartment buildings and stairways. Via delle Mura Gianicolensi, where the theater indicates free parking, takes its name from the walls that close the hill. The Vascello is a little below this ridge, inside the grid of the neighborhood's streets, and can be reached on foot from Porta San Pancrazio in a few minutes.

Do not confuse Monteverde Vecchio with Monteverde Nuovo, the more recent part of the neighborhood that stretches toward Via Portuense and Via Gianicolense. The theater is in the upper, older part, close to the historic villas and the ridge of the Janiculum. The company's old home, the Teatro La Fede, was also on Via Portuense, but in another stretch of the city. If you use a navigator, enter the full address, Via Giacinto Carini 78, and not only the name of the theater.

A curiosity about the Teatro Vascello

The street number repeats. The company's first home, according to the official page of the Fabbrica dell'Attore, was the Teatro La Fede at Via Portuense 78. When in 1989 the founders left that cellar for an old cinema in Monteverde, the new address is Via Giacinto Carini 78. Pure coincidence, as far as the theater's sources show, which do not comment on it. But for anyone who knows the company's history it is a coincidence that is hard to forget, almost a signature.

Then there is the name of the street. Giacinto Carini, explains the Biographical Dictionary of Treccani, was a man from Palermo born in 1821, a cavalry colonel in the Sicilian revolution of 1848, later one of the commanders of the expedition of the 1,000, wounded in Palermo in 1860. He died in Rome in 1880 as a general of the Italian army. In Monteverde Vecchio many streets are named after figures of the Risorgimento, and the theater lives on one without making a theme of it.

The name of the first group also has a graphic curiosity. The theater's sources write it Space Re(v)action, with the v in parentheses inside the English word reaction, and date it to 1967. The typographic play lets you read two different words together, and says something about the experimental climate of those years. From that name, seven years later, came the cooperative La Fabbrica dell'Attore, which is still today the body that runs the theater.

One thing nobody tells you about the Teatro Vascello

On Saturday the show starts at 19:00, not 21:00. It is written clearly on the ticketing page, yet it is easy to show up at half past eight in the evening convinced you are early and find the show already halfway through. On Sunday the start is at 17:00, Monday to Friday at 21:00. Check the day before you leave home, especially if you are coming from far away and counting on an evening bus.

Second little-known thing: the box office is closed in summer and has reduced hours in September before the program begins. In 2026 the theater indicates closure from July 29 to September 2, and then hours Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 18:00 until there are shows. Once the season is under way, the Tuesday-Friday box office stays open until 21:30, so you can also buy at the last moment, if seats remain.

Third thing: the calendar has gaps. Between one title and the next there are often a few days without shows, for example between October 18, 2026, the last performance of L'orologio americano, and October 28, when La medium arrives. Anyone planning a trip to Rome with an evening at the theater should start from the program and not the other way around, otherwise they risk finding the hall closed on exactly the free days of the vacation.

From old cinema to theater: how did the Vascello come about?

The story begins far from Monteverde. In 1967 Giancarlo Nanni and Manuela Kustermann created the group Space Re(v)action, amid the ferment of youth movements and Rome's cellar theaters. In 1974 they founded the cooperative La Fabbrica dell'Attore, based at the Teatro La Fede on Via Portuense. It is there that the works the theater's history page recalls took shape, among them A come Alice, Risveglio di primavera and L'imperatore della Cina.

At the end of the 1980s a larger space was needed. The choice fell on a closed neighborhood cinema. According to a reconstruction published by Teatro.it in July 2013, the Cinema Vascello had been built in 1946, and the project to turn it into a theater bears the signature of the architects Costantino Dardi and Giancarlo Nanni. In 1995 the entrance, atrium and foyer were reorganized on a design by the architects M. A. Di Martino and B. Agostinelli, again according to the same source.

The foyer the audience crosses today is therefore the result of two different moments: the transformation of 1989, which creates the theater inside the shell of the cinema, and the reorganization of 1995, which redesigns the entrance and waiting spaces. The theater does not publish historical photographs of the old cinema or documents on its name, and the memory of the earlier hall is left to the press reconstruction and to that of the residents.

The inauguration took place on May 4, 1989 with Qui non ci torno più by Tadeusz Kantor and his Teatro Cricot, as the official history page recalls. A precise statement of intent: opening a Roman theater with one of the masters of the European avant-garde meant declaring at once what one wanted to do. In 1998 the Ministry recognized the Fabbrica dell'Attore as a Teatro Stabile d'Innovazione. Today the company is recognized as a theater production center.

Opening a research theater in Monteverde in 1989 meant bringing the avant-garde out of the historic center and the cellars, into a neighborhood of families and offices. The choice of a former cinema was not a fallback. The long hall of an old cinema and a purpose-built stage offered space and visibility that the cellars had never guaranteed. In our judgment it is still today the real strength of the Vascello over many Roman spaces in the same artistic area.

In January 2010 Giancarlo Nanni died. Since then Manuela Kustermann has led company and theater alone, and the official page speaks of a gradual path of renewal, with a generational change in the names supported by the house. The list of artists close to the company today includes Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella, Leonardo Manzan, Giacomo Bisordi, Fabio Condemi, Fabiana Iacozzilli, Lisa Ferlazzo Natoli with lacasadargilla, Eleonora Danco, and production support for Daria Deflorian.

2024 marked 50 years since the founding of the Fabbrica dell'Attore, and the theater has long passed 35 years of activity on Via Carini. For a theater born from the cellar experience of the 1960s and 1970s, staying so long in the hands of those who founded it is a rare thing. The fact matters for the spectator too: the artistic line does not change every season, and anyone who loved one program finds the same taste the following year.

The advice I give you for visiting the Teatro Vascello

Choose the show before the evening, not the evening before. The Vascello programs many short runs, some of only one or two days, and dance titles or those of foreign companies sell out fast. The advice is to look at the official program at the start of the month, pin down the two or three dates that really interest you and buy right away. For people who go to the theater often the cards make sense, for others the single ticket is enough.

Then come a little early. Half an hour ahead is enough to pick up tickets, find your seat and glance at the season posters in the foyer. The hall is compact and the seats are numbered. In our judgment visibility is good almost everywhere, and the central rows work better than the front ones for dance, because the stage is wide and the design of bodies in space is caught only with a bit of distance.

Last practical point: if the title you are interested in has runs over several days, choose a weeknight. From Tuesday to Friday the box office stays open until 21:30, parking along the walls is usually found with less effort and you leave into a quiet neighborhood. The weekend, with the earlier times of 19:00 and 17:00, is instead the right choice for those who have to get home outside Rome by public transport.

Always read the presentation of the individual show on the official site before buying. In research theater, length, language and idiom change a lot from one title to another: there are works without words, shows in a foreign language, monologues of just over an hour and long productions with many performers. Knowing in advance what to expect avoids the most common disappointment, that of someone who arrives looking for a comedy and finds a dance piece.

How much does it cost and how do you book?

The prices for the 2026-2027 season published by the theater are four, plus a small surcharge for those who need to change date. There are no differences by section of the hall, because the seats are all of the same type. The discounts apply to over 65s, students and members of partner bodies and clubs. Changing the date costs 5 euros and is possible only for the same show, according to the ticketing page.

The channel to prefer is the official one: the Teatro Vascello ticketing page, the box office on Via Carini and the numbers 06 5881021 and 06 5898031, with phone purchase by card and the possibility of bank transfer. For online purchase the theater refers to the VivaTicket circuit, with a direct link from its own site. Anyone who wants to clear up doubts about discounts and accessible seats is quicker to write to botteghino@teatrovascello.it or to phone.

TicketPrice
Full price25 euros
Over 6520 euros
Partner discounts and clubs18 euros
Students16 euros
Date change, same show5 euros

For those thinking of coming back several times there are subscriptions and cards. The Zefiro or Eolo subscription costs 135 euros for nine shows. The Card Libera costs 114 euros for six shows, the Card Love 74 euros for two shows for two people, the Card Danza 50 euros for four admissions, the Card Trilogia Poveri Cristi 45 euros for the three shows of the project of that name. The exact conditions of each formula should be read on the official page before buying.

The opposite view, and we stand by it: the nine-show subscription is overrated for someone who goes to the theater three or four times a year. The per-evening saving is there, but it commits you to choosing nine titles in a long season, and many end up skipping some. The Card Libera or the Card Danza are more honest for the occasional audience. The full subscription pays off only for those who truly follow the program and live nearby.

Before paying full price, check the partner discounts. The 18-euro price is reserved for company clubs, associations and bodies that have an agreement with the theater, and several clubs publish their agreement with the Vascello online. The quickest way to find out is to ask your own club or write to the box office stating the body you belong to. Students pay 16 euros, over 65s pay 20, and in these cases too it is best to ask the box office which document is needed.

For wheelchair users the theater indicates dedicated barrier-free spaces in the front row, to be booked in advance. The entrance is not the main one: you enter from the corridor at the back, at Via Francesco Massari 3, with the assistance of the staff. The ticket costs 5 euros for the person with a disability and 20 euros for the companion. The same rates apply to holders of 100 percent disability certification.

The Vascello also offers audio description for blind and low-vision people, with wireless headphones that describe scenes, costumes and movements. Guide dogs are admitted. The service is activated with a minimum of 25 people and the dates published so far concern the past season. For the dates of the current season and for bookings, follow the theater's accessibility page, which carries a dedicated contact.

The Teatro Vascello page on Vivaticket gathers in one list the season's shows, the Romaeuropa Festival dates hosted on Via Carini and the cards and subscriptions on sale. It is an affiliate link: if you buy from there Estate Romana receives a small commission, while the price for you stays the seller's. Before paying check date, time and ticket type.

What's on the program for the 2026-2027 season?

For the 2026-2027 season the program announces 37 titles, from September 15, 2026 to May 30, 2027, according to the official season page. It started with Glass with Silence on September 15 and 16 and with Lo strano caso del dottor Jekyll e del signor Hyde from the 23rd to the 27th. From September 29 to October 4 Tragudia il canto di Edipo is on stage, then Lemnos from October 7 to 11 and L'orologio americano from the 14th to the 18th.

Autumn continues with La medium on October 28 and 29, Catalogo on October 31 and November 1, Starman on November 4 and 5, C'era una volta on the 10th and Il giorno della civetta on November 11. From November 13 to 22 Il prodigio is staged, from the 24th to the 29th Quinto: non uccidere. December brings The Sleeping Queen from the 1st to the 6th and Hospitality Suite from the 10th to the 20th, before 7-14-21-28 from December 22 to January 2.

2027 opens with Metadietro from January 5 to 17, Il viale del tramonto from the 19th to the 24th and L'ultimo nastro di Krapp with Press Conference from the 26th to the 31st. In February the program announces Orestea from the 3rd to the 14th, Vai pure on the 16th, Ma a che serve la luce? with Le ceneri di Gramsci from the 18th to the 21st and Edipus from the 23rd to the 28th. This is the densest stretch of the season for reinterpreted classics.

March offers Fuggire, cadere e altre cose inutili from the 2nd to the 14th, Misurare il salto delle rane from the 16th to the 21st and Scemi del villaggio from the 23rd to the 27th. Riccardo III closes March and opens April, from March 30 to April 4. Then come Too Late from April 6 to 11, La poésie de la résistance from the 13th to the 17th, Una tribù, ecco quello che sono on the 18th and The Forest from the 20th to the 25th.

Giulio Cesare o la notte della Repubblica is staged from April 27 to May 2. May lines up Congiura from the 4th to the 9th, La trilogia dei poveri cristi from the 11th to the 16th, Non seppellitemi viva on the 18th, Cinema cielo from the 20th to the 23rd, Notti on the 25th and 26th and finally L'ostaggio from the 27th to the 30th, the last title of the season according to the official page.

In the season presentation published by Teatrionline on May 28, 2026 some well-known names appear: the choreography of Lucinda Childs for Glass with Silence, Alessandro Serra for Tragudia, Arthur Miller and Elio De Capitani for L'orologio americano, Antonio Latella for Riccardo III with Vinicio Marchioni, Jan Fabre with his company in April, Virgilio Sieni for the work on Pasolini. Dates and titles may change along the way: the official page always prevails.

Anyone who follows dance can build a separate path. In the same presentation Glass with Silence, Catalogo, C'era una volta, The Sleeping Queen by Mauro Astolfi, Virgilio Sieni's work on Pasolini and The Forest by Cristiana Morganti and Claudio Tolcachir are listed as choreographic. The Card Danza with four admissions at 50 euros suits this kind of spectator well, who in a season picks a few precise titles.

For someone entering the Vascello for the first time, in our judgment, the reinterpreted classics are the most comfortable door: Orestea, Riccardo III, L'orologio americano, Giulio Cesare. You know the story, and you can focus your attention on how the staging transforms it. Those who instead want to understand right away what distinguishes this hall from a repertory theater should pick one of the two titles by Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella between December and January.

Another well-known fact that is rarely mentioned

Everyone knows the Vascello is Manuela Kustermann's theater. Less often mentioned is the fact that the house does not limit itself to hosting: the Fabbrica dell'Attore produces and co-produces a substantial part of the program, and supports specific artists over time. Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella are the most evident case, with two titles in the season straddling New Year's. For the audience it means being able to follow a company's path year after year in the same space.

The other little-cited fact concerns dance. The Vascello has a dedicated Card Danza, and the 2026-2027 program opened with a choreography. For years the hall has hosted Italian and European contemporary dance companies, and the 2013 Teatro.it reconstruction recalled among the guests Enzo Cosimi, Sosta Palmizi, Balletto di Toscana and Wim Vandekeybus. In a city where experimental dance has few stable stages, the fact carries weight.

A detail that says a lot about the house's way of working: among the subscription formulas there is a card built on a single project, the Card Trilogia Poveri Cristi, which for 45 euros covers the three shows of the Trilogia dei poveri cristi staged from May 11 to 16, 2027. It is not a commercial choice of a big theater. It is the sign of a program designed also for paths, where one show is understood better alongside the other two.

The right photo to take at the Teatro Vascello

The photo that tells the place is taken outside, not inside. Arrive on Via Carini at dusk, before an evening show, and frame the theater's door with the row of neighborhood buildings on either side. It is the image of a research theater set in a residential street, and it says more than any shot of the empty hall. During the show the phone stays off.

If you want a second photograph tied to the place, walk up toward Porta San Pancrazio and the Acqua Paola Fountain, on the edge of the Janiculum. From there the city opens below the balustrade, with the domes of the center in a row. On autumn evenings the sunset light falls right in the hour before the weekend shows, and you arrive at the theater unhurried for the 19:00 or 21:00 start.

A rule of common sense: Via Carini is a street of homes. No tripods in front of doorways, no flash toward windows, no posing in the middle of the roadway when cars pass. The best shot is taken from the opposite sidewalk, with a wide frame that holds the theater entrance and a bit of street. Anyone who wants the hall has to settle for memory, because photographing during the performance disturbs artists and audience.

How do you get there from central Rome?

The line the theater lists first is bus 75, which links the neighborhood with Termini Station, the Colosseum and the area of the Pyramid of Cestius. The Where We Are page also lists lines 44, 710, 870 and 871, and the Quattro Venti station on Viale dei Quattro Venti. Updated times and routes should be checked on the ATAC website, especially in the evening, when frequencies thin out.

By car the situation is better than the Roman average. The theater points out free parking along Via delle Mura Gianicolensi, about 100 meters away, and three paid garages: at Via Giacinto Carini 43, at Via Maurizio Quadrio 22 with a discount for those who show the ticket, and at Via Raffaello Giovagnoli 20. On sold-out evenings it is still best to arrive a little early, because the spaces along the walls also serve residents.

On foot from Trastevere it is uphill, and you feel the climb. The most pleasant route goes by San Pietro in Montorio, with Bramante's Tempietto, and continues along Via Garibaldi to the fountain and Porta San Pancrazio, then descends into the neighborhood. It is a walk to take calmly before the show. On the way back, after 23:00, the bus or a taxi is the better choice.

Anyone staying in Prati or near St. Peter's can climb the Janiculum from the Sant'Onofrio side and take the walk along the ridge to the Porta San Pancrazio area, then descend into the neighborhood. It is a long route, beautiful by day, less practical in the dark. For the evening return the taxi remains the simplest solution, and it is best to book it before the end of the show, since the theater does not indicate a taxi stand nearby.

Some important events that happened here in history

The essential sequence, according to the theater's sources and the Teatro.it reconstruction. In 1946 the Cinema Vascello is built. In 1967 the group Space Re(v)action of Nanni and Kustermann is born in Rome, which in 1974 becomes the cooperative La Fabbrica dell'Attore at the Teatro La Fede. On May 4, 1989 the old cinema reopens as the Teatro Vascello with the show by Tadeusz Kantor. In 1995 the entrance and foyer are reorganized.

In 1998 the ministerial recognition as a Teatro Stabile d'Innovazione arrives. According to Teatro.it, in 2001 Giancarlo Nanni teaches at the Actors Studio in New York. In January 2010 Nanni dies and Manuela Kustermann takes on the artistic direction alone. In 2024 the company turns 50 years from its founding. In September 2026 the 2026-2027 season opens, with 37 titles scheduled until the end of May 2027, among drama, dance and guest companies.

The shift from Teatro Stabile d'Innovazione to theater production center follows the change in the categories through which the Ministry supports live performance. For the spectator the difference matters little. It does explain, though, why the Vascello is not a hall for rent to anyone, but the home of a company that produces and co-produces shows, chooses the artists to follow and builds the program around a recognizable line.

Who has passed through the Teatro Vascello

The first name is the one that opened the hall: Tadeusz Kantor with the Teatro Cricot, on May 4, 1989. The theater's history page then cites Peter Brook and Bob Wilson among the international masters hosted. The Teatro.it reconstruction adds Beckett's Giorni felici directed by Peter Brook with Natasha Parry, and among the guests Raul Ruiz, Carlo Cecchi, Moni Ovadia and Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, besides the dance companies already mentioned.

Kantor's choice, then, carried a particular weight. Qui non ci torno più was one of the last works of the Polish director, who died the following year, and bringing it to Rome to inaugurate a new theater meant placing oneself at once under the sign of the most radical European avant-garde. Those who have frequented the Vascello since then find that line again in the foreign companies that pass through Via Carini every season.

Then there are the house names, which return to the Vascello regularly: Manuela Kustermann as performer, Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella, and the younger generation supported by the company. In the 2026-2027 season the program brings to Via Carini, among others, Lucinda Childs as choreographer, Jan Fabre with his company, Renato Carpentieri, Iaia Forte and Anna Bonaiuto, according to the Teatrionline presentation of May 2026.

In the same season, according to the May presentation, there also appear Marta Cuscunà, Massimiliano Civica, Mauro Astolfi, Roberto Andò, Carmelo Rifici, Federico Tiezzi and Sandro Lombardi with a text by Giovanni Testori, Paola Pitagora, Thea Dellavalle with a text by Jon Fosse, and Gabriele Di Luca and Massimiliano Setti, directors of two shows in March, one of them signed by Carrozzeria Orfeo. It is a fairly faithful snapshot of the Italian experimental scene of these years, lined up in a single program and a single neighborhood hall.

The name, the villa of 1849 and what is told

What the documents say is simple: the theater takes its name from the Cinema Vascello, the neighborhood hall of 1946 from which it was carved. The theater does not publish an explanation of the name chosen back then for the cinema. In the neighborhood, however, the word Vascello carries a precise weight, because it is also the name of a villa on the Janiculum tied to the last defense of the Roman Republic of 1849.

According to the Comitato Gianicolo, the villa called Il Vascello held out for three weeks against the French attacks under the command of Giacomo Medici, and was abandoned only on Garibaldi's orders during the withdrawal of the defense line. Its name has remained tied to that defense, and the sources remember him as Giacomo Medici del Vascello. To retrace that history the reference is the Museum of the Roman Republic and Garibaldian Memory at Porta San Pancrazio.

The connection between the old cinema and the villa comes naturally, given that many streets around recall the Risorgimento, but no source from the theater confirms it and it remains a hypothesis, not a fact. As for legends, none are tied to the hall: no ghost stories or cursed shows, only a name that sounds familiar in the neighborhood and recalls one of the best-known pages of the defense of Rome.

How does the Vascello fit into the Rome of the Janiculum?

The Vascello is the theater of a hill that has many other reasons to be visited. The Janiculum with its panoramic walk, the Janiculum Mausoleum Ossuary tied to those who fell in the battles for Rome, the American Academy in Rome with its public events, and the two big parks of Villa Sciarra and Villa Doria Pamphilj. Anyone coming to the theater in the evening can build the afternoon around this route.

On the performance front, the Vascello occupies a precise slot on the Roman map. It does not have the sparkling repertoire of the Teatro Sistina or the big numbers of the Teatro Olimpico or of the Auditorium Parco della Musica. It speaks rather with the spaces of experimental work: among our listings you also find the Teatro India, another Roman stage of the contemporary scene.

For those who love auteur cinema, on the Trastevere side there are the Nuovo Cinema Sacher and the Cinema Troisi, two halls to pair with a theater season like the Vascello's. And those who want to go further back in time, to the theaters of ancient Rome, will find the Theater of Marcellus on the other side of the Tiber, beyond the Tiber Island.

Then there is the relationship with green space. The Vascello is a short distance from two of the historic villas most frequented by the neighborhood, Villa Sciarra and Villa Doria Pamphilj, and for the Sunday afternoon audience the walk before the show comes naturally. It is one of the reasons the 17:00 show works well: you leave the park, enter the hall, and after the show the evening is still left to go down to the center or head home.

When is it closed and what should you not expect?

The theater lives with the season, from September to the end of May. In summer the box office closes, and in 2026 the pause ran from July 29 to September 2. During the season the box office stays closed on December 24 and 25, 2026, on January 1, 2027 and on March 28 and 29, 2027, according to the official page. On days with no show on the program the hall cannot be visited, and the theater does not publish guided visits of the building.

Even in full season there are evenings without shows. The official program leaves uncovered, for example, the days between November 6 and 9, 2026, between Starman and C'era una volta. On March 28 and 29, 2027, Easter and Easter Monday, the box office is closed, and Riccardo III debuts on the 30th. Before setting the evening always check what is on the program on the chosen day, and if the title has only one performance.

Do not expect a historic theater with stucco and boxes, nor a bar or restaurant open during the day: the theater does not list food service. Do not expect easy shows either. The program is experimental, some titles are in a foreign language or without words, some last just over an hour. Before buying it is worth reading the presentation of each show on the official site.

Eating in the area

Monteverde Vecchio is a lived-in neighborhood, and before the show you eat as the residents eat: little display, clear prices, kitchens that close at normal hours. The real traps are found going down toward Trastevere, where around the most photographed squares you find laminated menus with photos of the dishes, the barker at the door and items written without prices, sometimes with a different menu between the window and the table.

Another signal to read: the place open nonstop from 11:00 to midnight, with no kitchen break, and the fresh pasta rolled in the window as a show for passersby. They are not crimes, but Romans do not go there because they know the price adapts to the passing customer. For dinner before or after the theater it is best to orient yourself with the list of addresses on Google Maps, built with criteria of quality and honest prices.

A matter of times. With the show at 21:00 from Monday to Friday, dinner moves earlier, around 19:00, or after 23:00, when the choice narrows. On Saturday, with the start at 19:00, the most comfortable solution is to eat afterward, going down toward Trastevere. On Sunday the 17:00 show leaves the whole evening free. Booking the table before buying the ticket avoids the rush between dinner and entering the hall.

What to combine in the same day

A classic afternoon before a Saturday show at 19:00. You start from Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere with the basilica, climb by San Pietro in Montorio, continue on the Janiculum to the Acqua Paola Fountain and go down to Monteverde passing by the walls of Villa Sciarra. Three hours are enough, including a seated pause before the hall.

For a Sunday with the 17:00 show, better the morning in the green. Villa Pamphilj is big enough to fill two hours of walking, and lunch is had in the neighborhood. Those who prefer art can start from the lungotevere with Villa Farnesina and the Galleria Corsini, then climb toward Sant'Onofrio and the Bosco Parrasio.

Other sensible combinations stay on the Trastevere side: the Basilica of Santa Cecilia, the Museo di Roma in Trastevere, the crossing of Ponte Sisto. Anyone arriving on bus 75 from the south can instead stop first at Porta San Paolo, take a turn through Testaccio or on the Aventine with the Villa del Priorato di Malta, and then go up to Monteverde.

One last idea for those with a free evening who love the story of 1849. You begin at the Museum of the Roman Republic at Porta San Pancrazio, pass in front of the Mausoleum Ossuary, look at the city from the Acqua Paola Fountain and go down to Monteverde for the show. It is a short itinerary, all on foot, that holds together the Risorgimento history of the hill and the name the theater carries on its sign.

Bus 75, which the theater indicates as the main connection, also makes pairing with the archaeological area simple. An afternoon at the Colosseum or on the Palatine, a break, and then the bus to Monteverde for the 19:00 or 21:00 show. Anyone arriving from the station with luggage, however, does better to stop at the hotel first: the theater does not list a luggage deposit.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Teatro Vascello?

The Teatro Vascello is at Via Giacinto Carini 78, in Monteverde Vecchio, on the west slope of the Janiculum, near the walls of Villa Sciarra. The main entrance is on the street, while wheelchair users enter from the corridor at the back at Via Francesco Massari 3, with staff assistance. The simplest reference point for orienting yourself is Porta San Pancrazio, from which you go down into the neighborhood in a few minutes on foot. The theater also indicates free parking along Via delle Mura Gianicolensi, about 100 meters from the entrance.

How much does a ticket to the Teatro Vascello cost?

For the 2026-2027 season the theater lists 25 euros for full price, 20 euros for over 65s, 18 euros for partner discounts and 16 euros for students. Changing the date for the same show costs 5 euros. There are then subscriptions and cards from 45 to 135 euros, from the Card Trilogia Poveri Cristi to the nine-show subscription. The conditions of each formula are on the official ticketing page, and for seats reserved for wheelchair users the rates are 5 euros plus 20 euros for the person assisting.

What time do the shows start?

From Monday to Friday shows start at 21:00, on Saturday at 19:00 and on Sunday at 17:00, according to the ticketing page. For New Year's the theater indicates a 21:30 start. The earlier Saturday is what surprises first-time visitors most, so it is best to check day and time on the ticket before leaving. Some titles have a single performance, and the calendar has to be read title by title.

How do you buy tickets online?

The theater lists the VivaTicket circuit for online purchase, with a link from its own ticketing page. Alternatively you buy at the box office on Via Carini, by phone at 06 5881021 and 06 5898031 with a credit or debit card, or by bank transfer as indicated on the site. For discounts and wheelchair seats the safest route remains direct contact with the box office.

How do you get to the Teatro Vascello by public transportation?

The theater lists bus 75 first, which passes through Termini, the Colosseum and Piramide. On the Where We Are page lines 44, 710, 870 and 871 also appear, and the Quattro Venti station on Viale dei Quattro Venti. Lines and evening times may change, and before leaving it is best to check the updated route on the ATAC website, especially for the return after the show. From Trastevere you can also walk up via San Pietro in Montorio and Porta San Pancrazio, with a demanding but short climb.

Is there parking near the theater?

Yes. The theater points out free spaces along Via delle Mura Gianicolensi, about 100 meters from the entrance, and three paid garages: at Via Giacinto Carini 43, at Via Maurizio Quadrio 22, where those who show the show ticket get a discount, and at Via Raffaello Giovagnoli 20. On weekend evenings it is best to arrive at least half an hour early to find a spot along the walls without stress.

Is the Teatro Vascello suitable for children?

The 2026-2027 program is designed for an adult audience, with contemporary drama, reinterpreted classics and experimental dance. The theater does not publish a specific series for families on the season page. Some dance shows may work with kids used to theater, but the choice has to be made by reading the presentation of each title. For an outing designed for the little ones, on the site you also find the proposals of Rome with Kids.

Can you visit the theater without attending a show?

No, the theater does not publish guided visits of the building or opening hours to the public outside shows. The box office is open at the hours indicated on the site, and you can stop by to buy tickets, but the hall is seen only as a spectator. For anyone who wants to learn the history of the place the best way is to pick an evening in the program, perhaps a show produced by the Fabbrica dell'Attore, and arrive half an hour early to experience the foyer before entering the hall.

Who runs the Teatro Vascello?

The artistic direction is Manuela Kustermann's, who founded the company in 1974 together with Giancarlo Nanni. After Nanni's death, in January 2010, Kustermann has led the theater and La Fabbrica dell'Attore alone, recognized by the Ministry and the Lazio Region as a theater production center. The company's official page speaks of a path of renewal with attention to artists of younger generations.

Organizing an evening at the Vascello for several people means working on timing more than on the ticket: choosing the right performance, booking seats for wheelchair users in advance, checking the discounts and deciding how to get back after 23:00. For those who plan cultural outings of this kind, a useful resource for those who organize group trips is Tour Leader Pro, with tools designed to coordinate visits, events and itineraries.

The Vascello is also a way to see Rome from the side of its neighborhoods, with the Janiculum, Trastevere and the historic villas as the frame for an evening at the theater. Putting together the city of shows, museums, the Castelli and the rest of Lazio takes a few days and a minimum of planning, and a useful resource for putting together a multi-day itinerary is Italy Planner.
