The cast

L'inconveniente: the plot of the comedy

L'inconveniente is a contemporary comedy about the meeting between Sara, a rigorous and rational 35-year-old manager, and Carmen, a rebellious 71-year-old woman, forced to live together after the sale of a house with bare ownership (nuda proprietà).

The pretext

Sara buys an apartment at a favorable price, but with one condition: the owner, Carmen, may live there until her death. It is the mechanism of nuda proprietà, and the theater calls it a simple and disruptive pretext, because it forces two strangers to share a space while awaiting an event neither wants to name.

Two women, two solitudes

Carmen is lucid, unpredictable, with an illness looming, she shatters Sara's certainties. Sara, in turn, becomes for Carmen an unexpected companion against loneliness. Among clever quarrels, sudden confessions, shortbread cookies, cigarettes and bizarre birthdays, the two discover each is the other's mirror.

The choice

When Sara's marriage wavers and Carmen reveals her deepest regrets, both find themselves facing a choice: accept life as it is or change it before it is too late. Death is present throughout the story, the presentation says, but never overshadows it: it is interwoven with the need to truly live.

The tone

The theater presents the piece as a duet that combines humor, cynicism, tenderness and disenchantment: brilliant, comic dialogues crossed by an intimate emotional truth. It is a text about listening, about the courage to change and about the possibility of reinventing oneself even when it seems too late, or too early.

How L'inconveniente was born: the author's note

L'inconveniente was born, according to the author's note published by Teatro Quirino, from an ad read in the newspaper: an apartment for sale with the tenant inside.

A real visit

The author tells of going to see that house out of curiosity: spacious, in a prestigious area, at a surprisingly low price, on the condition that the owner, an elderly lady, would live there until her death. Walking through those rooms full of objects and memories, he felt the presence of a real life he could not ignore.

The question

He did not buy it: the idea of waiting for someone's death to enter his own home seemed unbearable. But from that visit came a question: what would have happened if he had signed? What relationship would have formed between two people forced to share a space and a threshold?

The result

From that mixture of curiosity, discomfort and compassion, the note concludes, the story was born: a theatrical reflection on waiting, on solitude and on the encounters that change the course of a life. In the Italian version the would-be buyer becomes a woman, and the duet becomes a confrontation between two generations of women.

Who Milena Vukotic is: her biography

Milena Vukotic, born in Rome on April 23, 1935, is an actress who has worked in over 95 films with directors such as Federico Fellini, Luis Buñuel, Mario Monicelli, Ettore Scola and Bernardo Bertolucci, and in 2024 received the special career David di Donatello.

From dance to acting

The daughter of a playwright and diplomat of Montenegrin origin and of Marta Nervi, daughter of the pianist Gemma Luziani, she studied piano, acting and classical dance from childhood between London, Vienna and Paris. She began as a dancer, briefly in the corps de ballet of the Paris Opera and then in the companies of the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas and Roland Petit. It was seeing Fellini's La Strada that made her decide to devote herself only to acting.

Auteur cinema

She debuted in film in the early 1960s with Damiano Damiani's Il sicario. Then came Dino Risi's Il giovedì, Fellini's Juliet of the Spirits and the Toby Dammit episode, Franco Zeffirelli's The Taming of the Shrew, Ettore Scola's L'arcidiavolo and La terrazza, and three films by Luis Buñuel: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, The Phantom of Liberty and That Obscure Object of Desire. Among the directors who have directed her are also Andrei Tarkovsky, Nagisa Oshima and Ferzan Ozpetek.

Pina Fantozzi and comedy

For part of the public Milena Vukotic remains Signora Pina, wife of the accountant Ugo Fantozzi of Paolo Villaggio: taking over from Liù Bosisio after the first two films, she won in 1994 the Nastro d'argento as best supporting actress for Fantozzi in paradiso. She was also Ugo Tognazzi's Mascetti's wife in Amici miei and Amici miei atto secondo.

Television

In 1964 Lina Wertmüller chose her for Il giornalino di Gian Burrasca, with Rita Pavone, in 1974 she is the lead in Nel mondo di Alice. From the late 1990s to 2016 she is Enrica in Un medico in famiglia, alongside Lino Banfi. In 2019 she came third in the final of Ballando con le stelle.

Theater

In the theater she was one of Rina Morelli's favorite actresses, with shows such as Oh, che bella guerra in 1982 and Pirandello's Così è se vi pare in 1983, and worked with Franco Zeffirelli, Giorgio Strehler, Paolo Poli and Jean Cocteau. In April 2025 she was Madame A. in Lezione d'amore, sinfonia di un incontro, written and directed by Andrée Ruth Shammah and inspired by Harold and Maude.

Honors

She received the Ciak d'oro for career in 2007, three David di Donatello nominations (for Amici miei atto secondo, Fantozzi alla riscossa and Carlo Mazzacurati's La sedia della felicità) and in 2024 the special career David, together with Giorgio Moroder.

Luca Manfredi and Giulia Fiume

L'inconveniente is directed by Luca Manfredi, a Roman director and screenwriter born in 1958, son of Nino Manfredi, alongside Milena Vukotic acts Giulia Fiume, a Catania-born actress known for the series Le indagini di Lolita Lobosco.

Luca Manfredi

After about 100 commercials, including those starring his father, Luca Manfredi created and directed in 1993 the series Un commissario a Roma, awarded a Telegatto. He has directed TV dramas such as Una pallottola nel cuore, L'ultimo papa re, In arte Nino, about his father's youth played by Elio Germano, and Permette? Alberto Sordi, with Edoardo Pesce. For his father's centenary he made the documentary Uno, nessuno, cento Nino.

Giulia Fiume

Born in Catania in 1988, a graduate of the Accademia Atman, Giulia Fiume came to Rome at 20 and worked in theater with Carlo Croccolo, Enzo Garinei, Lina Sastri and Giorgio Pasotti. On television she is Carmela Lobosco in Le indagini di Lolita Lobosco and acted in Don Matteo and Un passo dal cielo, in film in Confusi e felici and Suburra.

A proven pair

Director and actress have already worked together: in 2023 Giulia Fiume was in the cast of Gente di facili costumi, the comedy by Nino Marino and Nino Manfredi directed by Luca Manfredi.

A curiosity about L'inconveniente with Milena Vukotic at Teatro Quirino, January 19 to 31, 2027

The most interesting curiosity concerns the age of the characters and that of the performer. In the synopsis Carmen is 71, Milena Vukotic, born in 1935, will be 91 at the time of the Rome debut. A lead 20 years older than her character is a rare case, and says much about the stage power of an actress who began as a dancer at the Paris Opera and who in 2025, at 90, was on stage with another duet between generations, Lezione d'amore, inspired by Harold and Maude.

There is also a thread linking the two shows. In Harold and Maude a young man and an old woman learn from each other how to live, in L'inconveniente the same happens between Sara and Carmen, with death in the background and irony in the foreground. In recent years Vukotic seems to have found a repertoire that puts at the center the dialogue between those with a lot of life behind them and those who still have to decide what to do with it.

Third curiosity: the director. Luca Manfredi told his father's story in In arte Nino and Alberto Sordi's in Permette? Alberto Sordi. Milena Vukotic acted for the masters of commedia all'italiana, from Monicelli to Risi to Scola. At the Quirino commedia all'italiana passes between generations, from the cinema of the fathers to the theater of the sons.

Teatro Quirino Vittorio Gassman, the show's hall

Teatro Quirino is a horseshoe-shaped hall with two balconies and a gallery, seating 852, in the Trevi district, since 2015 it has been run by Quirino srl with Guglielmo Ferro as artistic director.

A wooden theater

The first Quirino was commissioned in 1871 by Prince Maffeo Barberini Colonna di Sciarra, within the property of Palazzo Sciarra, with an entrance from Via del Corso and an extension reaching up to the Trevi Fountain. Designed by Giulio De Angelis with Francesco Marra, it was entirely of wood and, according to tradition, was assembled in a single day. The name recalls the Quirinal and the god Quirinus.

The reconstruction

In 1882 the opening of a street between Via del Corso and the Trevi Fountain forced it to be dismantled. De Angelis rebuilt it in masonry a few meters farther on, horseshoe-shaped, with two tiers of boxes and neoclassical cast-iron columns.

Piacentini

In 1914 Marcello Piacentini added a third tier of boxes and a retractable roof, in 1954 he returned to the theater with the cantilevered tiers and the canopy still seen over the entrance. The venue's profile is on the page about Teatro Quirino.

One thing nobody tells you about L'inconveniente with Milena Vukotic at Teatro Quirino, January 19 to 31, 2027

What goes unsaid is that L'inconveniente is a house production. Among the three bodies presenting the show is the Teatro Quirino Centro di Produzione: the comedy is not a stop on just any tour, but a title the theater helped build. For the Roman audience it means that the run at the Quirino carries a particular weight, with two full weeks of performances.

The second thing concerns the times, which at the Quirino change from day to day. On Thursday the performance is at 17:00, not in the evening, Saturday the 23rd is a matinee, Saturday the 30th an evening show, on Wednesday the 27th the performance is at 19:00. Whoever buys tickets in a hurry, assuming a fixed evening time, risks showing up at the theater four hours late. It is best to check the date on the calendar published by the theater before choosing.

Third thing: the matinees are the natural choice for the audience most devoted to Milena Vukotic, often not very young. The 17:00 performance lets you get home before dinner and move around the center in daylight, in January, however, at 19:00 it is already dark, and the little streets of the Trevi district are crowded on the way out.

How to get to Teatro Quirino

Teatro Quirino, at Via delle Vergini 7, is in the Trevi district between Via del Corso and the Trevi Fountain, in the historic center, it is reached on foot from the Barberini and Spagna stops of Metro A.

By metro

From the Barberini stop you go down Via del Tritone toward Via del Corso, at the Trevi Fountain you turn into the district's little streets up to Via delle Vergini. From Spagna you cross the Tridente to Via del Corso: the route is longer, but passes through some of the most beautiful streets in the center.

By bus

Many lines run along Via del Tritone and Via del Corso or stop around Piazza Venezia. The fastest combination depends on the starting point: the Atac route planner gives it in real time.

By car and taxi

The historic center is a limited traffic zone. Those arriving by car must leave it outside the ZTL and continue on foot or by public transport. For a matinee with older people the taxi to the mouth of Via delle Vergini is the most comfortable choice.

The advice I give you for visiting L'inconveniente with Milena Vukotic at Teatro Quirino, January 19 to 31, 2027

The advice is to choose a seat up close. L'inconveniente is a spoken duet, built on brilliant dialogue and silences, and the Quirino's horseshoe hall is intimate enough to let you follow the actresses' expressions from the front rows of the orchestra and the first balcony. For a show like this, in our opinion, it is worth spending a little more to sit close: Milena Vukotic's strength is in timing, glances, pauses, and from far away it is lost.

The second piece of advice concerns the date. The first performances of a run are often the most charged with expectation, the last the most polished. Midway between the two, the 19:00 performance on Wednesday the 27th is a good solution for those who want to dine afterward without getting in late, the Thursday and Sunday matinees suit those who prefer not to go out on winter evenings.

Third piece of advice: read two lines about nuda proprietà before going. It is not needed to understand the comedy, which explains everything itself, but it helps catch the irony of certain lines about who waits and who resists. Finally, arrive 15 minutes early: the Trevi district is crowded at every hour, and finding the entrance in the little streets around the fountain takes a few minutes longer than expected.

Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned

It is well known that Milena Vukotic was Signora Pina in the Fantozzi films. It is far less often cited that she was not the first: in the first two films the role was Liù Bosisio's, and Vukotic took over from the third, becoming for the public the only possible Pina. The 1994 Nastro d'argento for Fantozzi in paradiso came precisely for that character, which the actress played through the tenth and last chapter of the saga, Fantozzi 2000, la clonazione.

Another known and little-remembered fact is her training. Before being an actress, Milena Vukotic was a professional dancer, in the corps de ballet of the Paris Opera and in the companies of the Marquis de Cuevas and Roland Petit. The choice to leave dance for cinema came from watching Fellini's La Strada, years later it was Fellini himself who directed her in Juliet of the Spirits and in Toby Dammit. It is a story that explains the physical precision of her performances, even in the lightest comedies.

Finally, a fact about the theater: the Quirino today carries, beside its historic name, that of Vittorio Gassman. Milena Vukotic, directed by Dino Risi, Mario Monicelli and Ettore Scola, belongs to the same season of Italian cinema: on that stage the name on the facade and the one on the bill speak to each other.

The Trevi district around the Quirino

Teatro Quirino is in the Trevi district, between Via del Corso and the Quirinal hill: in a few minutes on foot you reach the Trevi Fountain, the Quirinale, Piazza Colonna and the Galleria Alberto Sordi.

The Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is a few tens of meters from the theater, so close that the first Quirino, in 1871, reached right up to the basin. In front of the fountain is the church of Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio a Trevi.

The Quirinale

Climbing through the district's little streets you reach the square of the Quirinal Palace, with the obelisk and one of the widest views over the rooftops of the center. Opposite are the Scuderie del Quirinale, home to major exhibitions: a visit before the matinee is a good plan for a winter day.

Via del Corso and Piazza Colonna

Going down toward Via del Corso you meet Palazzo Sciarra, within whose property the first theater was born, and a little farther north Piazza Colonna with the Column of Marcus Aurelius. Opposite opens the Galleria Alberto Sordi, named for the actor Luca Manfredi portrayed on television.

The right photo to take at L'inconveniente with Milena Vukotic at Teatro Quirino, January 19 to 31, 2027

The right photo is taken outside, under the canopy that Marcello Piacentini added to the entrance in the 1950s and which is still the facade's distinguishing mark. With the sign lit and the show poster bearing Milena Vukotic's name, it is the image that tells the evening: an Italian-style theater in a little street of the center, a few steps from the most famous fountain in the world.

During the show no photographs: the theater's rules require it and so does respect for the actresses, and in a duet built on pauses a flash ruins the scene for everyone. Before the start, if staff allow, a shot of the horseshoe hall from the balcony, without flash, captures the architecture of the nineteenth-century theater renewed by Piacentini.

The second photo is taken at the Trevi Fountain, on the way out. After a January matinee, around 19:00, the fountain is lit and the artificial light on the facade of Palazzo Poli gives a different image from the daytime one. It is best photographed from the side steps, where the crowd is thinner.

Some important events that took place here in history

The history of Teatro Quirino spans more than 150 years of Rome as a capital. In 1871 Prince Maffeo Barberini Colonna di Sciarra had a wooden theater built in the property of Palazzo Sciarra, to a design by Giulio De Angelis and Francesco Marra, the repertoire is popular, pulcinellate and operettas. Rome has just become the capital of the Kingdom.

In 1882 the theater was dismantled to open a street between Via del Corso and the Trevi Fountain and rebuilt in masonry a few meters farther on. In 1898 the interiors were decorated with drapes, velvets and gilded stuccoes and the repertoire opened to opera and ballet: in June 1899 the maestro Antonino Palminteri conducted there Verdi's I Lombardi and Puccini's Manon Lescaut.

In 1914 Marcello Piacentini added the third tier of boxes and the retractable roof. From 1946 the theater was run by the Ente Teatrale Italiano, which also had its offices there, in 1954 Piacentini returned with a radical intervention, and the theater reopened on October 13, 1955. In 2009 management passed to Geppy Gleijeses's Gitiesse Artisti Riuniti, in 2015 to Quirino srl, with Guglielmo Ferro as artistic director. Today the Quirino is also a production center, and L'inconveniente is one of the titles that carries its signature.

Who has played at L'inconveniente with Milena Vukotic at Teatro Quirino, January 19 to 31, 2027

Through Teatro Quirino have passed, first of all, the men who built and transformed it: Prince Maffeo Barberini Colonna di Sciarra, who wanted it in 1871, Giulio De Angelis, who designed it twice, in wood and in masonry, Marcello Piacentini, who renewed it in 1914 and redesigned it in 1954. On the podium, in June 1899, stood Antonino Palminteri, with Verdi and Puccini. The theater today carries, beside its historic name, that of Vittorio Gassman.

Among recent directors are Geppy Gleijeses and Guglielmo Ferro, the current artistic director. Ferro has already directed Giulia Fiume: in 2019 she was in the cast of Otto donne e un mistero, and in 2017 of Verga's La Lupa, both under his direction. For the Catania-born actress the Quirino is therefore a stage tied to a director who knows her well.

In the same season other production and hosted titles pass through the Quirino, such as Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore and Il viaggio di Francesco. In January Milena Vukotic passes through, an actress who worked with Fellini, Buñuel and Tarkovsky, Giulia Fiume, Luca Manfredi, and with them Sara and Carmen: two women who, as in the author's note, find themselves sharing a space, a threshold and a destiny.

Who to go with to see L'inconveniente

L'inconveniente is a comedy suited to an adult audience and, in our opinion, ideal to see across two generations: a mother with her daughter, a grandmother with her granddaughter.

Two generations in the hall

The story of Sara and Carmen is that of a 35-year-old woman and a 71-year-old who learn to know each other. Watching it with a person of another age means finding yourself, in the hall, in the same situation as the characters, and coming out with something to say to each other.

With teenagers

The theater indicates no age limits. The themes, illness, death, a marriage in crisis, are treated lightly, but they are adult themes: for kids, in our opinion, the show suits late adolescence.

For lovers of Italian cinema

For those who grew up with the Fantozzi films or with Amici miei, seeing Milena Vukotic live is an appointment with a piece of their own memory as a viewer.

Teatro Quirino accessibility

For the hall's access conditions for people with disabilities and the dedicated seats, the reference is the Teatro Quirino box office, at the contacts published on the official website, which also has a page devoted to accessibility.

Before booking

The Quirino is a historic theater, reworked several times: it is best to ask which sectors can be reached without stairs before choosing a seat.

Getting there

The little streets of the Trevi district are paved with sampietrini cobbles and often crowded. For those who move with difficulty a taxi to the entrance is the safest choice, especially for weekend matinees.

Where to eat near Teatro Quirino

The Trevi district is full of places, but many are designed for the tourists who crowd the fountain: to eat well before or after the show it is best to move a few streets away.

Before the matinee

For a light lunch before 17:00, the streets between Via del Corso and the Pantheon offer trattorias and bakeries. Better to avoid places with the menu photographed in the window on the most crowded squares.

After the evening show

After the 21:00 performance dinner becomes a post-theater supper: the Pantheon area, 10 minutes on foot away, stays lively late even on weekdays.
