Priscilla, La regina del deserto, the musical, in the new Peep Arrow and Il Sistina production with translation and direction by Massimo Romeo Piparo and with the participation of Vladimir Luxuria in the role of Bernadette, debuts at Teatro Sistina in Rome, at Via Sistina 129 (00187 Rome), from Wednesday, February 10, 2027. Performances are Wednesday to Saturday at 20:30 and Sundays at 16:00. The closing date has not yet been published by the theater. The Sistina is a few steps from Piazza Barberini, served by Metro Line A, Barberini stop. The prices published by the theater are €79 in Poltronissima, €73 in Poltrona, €69 in first gallery, €61 in second gallery and €39 in third gallery. Tickets are bought on the official Sistina website, in the online box office linked to the show page, or at the theater's box office.

Language: opera sung in its original language; no English surtitles are announced, so check with the theater.

A lavender bus, three friends traveling across the Australian desert, a giant high heel on the roof and disco hits played by a live orchestra. Priscilla is one of the best-loved musicals in the world, and the Sistina stages it with a cast of over 30 artists, the original costumes of the English version and a lead who needs no introduction in Rome. The verdict is clear: it is the most anticipated title of the Sistina season, and Vladimir Luxuria in the role of Bernadette is a casting choice with a meaning that goes beyond the stage.

Priscilla at Teatro Sistina: dates, times, prices

Priscilla, La regina del deserto plays at Teatro Sistina from February 10, 2027, Wednesday to Saturday at 20:30 and Sundays at 16:00, with tickets from €39 to €79 according to the theater's official website.

The debut and the run

The debut is Wednesday, February 10, 2027. The official page lists the weekly schedule: four evenings, Wednesday to Saturday at 20:30, and a matinee on Sunday at 16:00. On Monday and Tuesday the hall rests. The end date of the run has not yet been published. Those who want to plan well in advance should keep an eye on the Sistina website.

Prices

The theater publishes five tiers: Poltronissima €79, Poltrona €73, first gallery €69, second gallery €61, third gallery €39. These are the prices of the Sistina's big musicals, the same as applied to Mamma Mia!.

Where to buy tickets

Tickets are bought on the official Teatro Sistina website, from the show page, or at the box office on Via Sistina 129.

The production

Priscilla is presented by Peep Arrow and Il Sistina in collaboration with Nullarbor Productions and MGM On Stage. The book is by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, based on the film produced by Latent Image and Specific Films and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Translation and direction are by Massimo Romeo Piparo.

What you will see: Priscilla at the Sistina

The Sistina's Priscilla is a production with over 30 artists on stage, the iconic original costumes of the English version and a live orchestra performing the songs in the original language, including I Will Survive, It's Raining Men, Finally and Go West.

An imposing staging

The theater presents the show as an overwhelming musical that celebrates friendship, courage and the search for one's own identity through an imposing staging. Those who know Piparo's Sistina know what to expect: big sets, quick changes, a stage always full.

The original costumes

The costumes are the original ones of the English version. It is not a detail: the musical's costumes, by Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner, won the Laurence Olivier Award in London in 2010 and the Tony Award on Broadway in 2011. They are one of the reasons many spectators go to see this musical.

The songs in English

Unlike Mamma Mia!, which at the Sistina is sung in Italian, Priscilla keeps the songs in the original language, with the live orchestra. It is a sensible choice: these are disco and pop hits everyone knows in English, and translating It's Raining Men would have been a gamble. The spoken parts, translated by Piparo, are in Italian.

The cast

The official page lists Vladimir Luxuria in the role of Bernadette and a cast of over 30 artists. The other names, including the performers of Tick and Adam, are not yet published on the show page.

The plot of Priscilla, La regina del deserto

Priscilla tells the journey of two drag queens and a transgender woman who cross the Australian desert from Sydney to Alice Springs aboard an old bus, renamed Priscilla, to perform at a resort.

The departure

Tick, who goes by Mitzi Mitosis on stage, gets a phone call from his wife Marion, from whom he is separated. She needs a show for a few weeks in her venue in Alice Springs, and their son Benji wants to meet his father. Tick brings in Bernadette, a transgender woman who has just lost her husband, and Adam, young and brazen, who becomes Felicia on stage.

The journey

The three buy an old minibus and call it Priscilla, queen of the desert. Along the way they meet hostility and prejudice, but also unexpected people: Bob, a small-town mechanic who saw Bernadette perform as a young woman in Sydney and falls in love with her. After an act of vandalism, Adam repaints the bus lavender.

The arrival

In Alice Springs the show goes on, Tick finally meets his son, who accepts him as he is, and the three realize they can no longer do without each other. The finale is a party to the notes of Finally.

Bernadette

Bernadette is the most mature and most ironic character of the trio: a woman who has gone through a whole life of battles and who looks at Adam's exuberance with cutting detachment. It is the role the show entrusts to its performer, and it is the one Vladimir Luxuria plays at the Sistina.

Priscilla, from the 1994 film to the musical

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a jukebox musical written by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, based on the 1994 film directed by Elliott himself, which debuted at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney on October 7, 2006.

The film

The film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (Le avventure di Priscilla, la regina del deserto) came out in 1994. The Sistina recalls that it was awarded an Oscar and the Grand Prix du Public at the Cannes Festival. Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner designed the musical's costumes.

Sydney, London, New York

After Sydney the musical moved to Melbourne in 2007 and Auckland in 2008. In London it debuted at the Palace Theatre in March 2009, co-produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group, and ran until December 31, 2011. It reached Broadway in 2011, after a tryout in Toronto, with Bette Midler among the producers: she had seen the show in London. The Broadway production closed on June 24, 2012 after 526 performances.

The awards

In London Priscilla was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for best new musical in 2010 and won the award for costumes. On Broadway, in 2011, it received two Tony Award nominations and won the one for best costumes, as well as the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle Award for the same category.

Priscilla in Italy

The first Italian production debuted on December 14, 2011 at Teatro Ciak in Milan. It reached Rome at the Teatro Brancaccio from January 24 to April 21, 2013. The following tour closed at the Gran Teatro di Roma on January 19, 2014. Other tours followed in 2015 and from 2018, with a new stop at the Brancaccio in December 2019. The Sistina one is a new production, signed by Piparo.

The songs of Priscilla

Priscilla's soundtrack is made of existing pop and disco hits. The Sistina cites I Will Survive, It's Raining Men, Finally and Go West, performed by the live orchestra in the original language.

The hits

In the Broadway version, later spread internationally, the show opens with It's Raining Men and includes, among others, What's Love Got to Do with It?, I Say a Little Prayer, Don't Leave Me This Way, Go West, I Love the Nightlife, True Colors, I Will Survive, Hot Stuff, MacArthur Park, Boogie Wonderland and the finale with Finally.

La Traviata on the roof

Among the pop songs there is a lyrical moment: Adam, seated in the giant high heel on the roof of the bus, lip-syncs Sempre libera from Verdi's La Traviata. It is one of the most famous images of the film and the musical, and at the Sistina, in an Italian theater, it has a special flavor.

The live orchestra

On Broadway the use of a recorded string section provoked a dispute with the American musicians' union. At the Sistina the orchestra is live, as in all Piparo productions. For a musical built on dance music, it makes the difference.

Who Vladimir Luxuria is: biography

Vladimir Luxuria was born in Foggia on June 24, 1965 and is an activist, writer, actress, and television and radio host. In 2006 she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, the first transgender person elected to the parliament of a European state.

From Foggia to Rome

She began in Foggia, organizing parties and then with her first live shows in 1982. In 1985 she moved to Rome, where she graduated from La Sapienza in Foreign Languages and Literatures with 110 cum laude, with a thesis on Joseph Conrad. In Rome she performed at the Piper and in 1989 recorded a song of her own, Der Traurige.

The Mario Mieli and Muccassassina

At the end of the 1980s she joined the Circolo di cultura omosessuale Mario Mieli and in 1993 became its artistic director, organizing the Muccassassina night, which became one of the best known in the capital and hosted figures such as David LaChapelle, Grace Jones, Rupert Everett and Alexander McQueen. With Vanni Piccolo and others she organized Italy's first Pride, in Rome on July 2, 1994. With Imma Battaglia the 2000 World Pride.

Film and theater

Her first film role came in 1991 with Cena alle nove by Paolo Breccia. In 1997 she acted in Carmine Amoroso's Come mi vuoi, with Enrico Lo Verso and Monica Bellucci, and in Davide Ferrario's Tutti giù per terra. From 2001 to 2003 she toured with the musical Emozioni, directed by Sergio Japino, with Sabrina Salerno and Ambra Angiolini. In 2007, at the Roman Theater in Trieste, she was the lead in Euripides' Helen.

Parliament

In the 2006 elections she was elected to the Chamber as an independent on the Rifondazione Comunista lists, in the Lazio 1 district, and sat on the Culture committee. She is the first transgender woman to enter a European parliament.

Television

A regular guest on the Maurizio Costanzo Show from 1999 to 2005, in 2008 she won L'isola dei famosi with 56 percent of the votes. She was then a commentator and correspondent on it, and since April 2024 has hosted it on Canale 5. She took part in Tale e quale show and Il Cantante Mascherato, and since 2023 has hosted on Rai Radio 1 Il rosso e il nero with Francesco Storace.

Books and the festival

She published with Bompiani Chi ha paura della Muccassassina in 2007 and Le favole non dette in 2009, then the novel Eldorado, and in 2011 won the Premio Margutta for literature. Since 2019 she has been artistic director of the Lovers Film Festival in Turin, one of the longest-running LGBTQ+ film festivals.

Massimo Romeo Piparo and the Sistina

Massimo Romeo Piparo has been artistic director of Teatro Sistina since the 2013-2014 season and is the director of the big international musicals produced in Italian on the stage on Via Sistina. For Priscilla he signs translation and direction.

The Sistina musicals

Under his direction the Sistina has staged Jesus Christ Superstar with Ted Neeley, the Jesus of the 1973 film. Mamma Mia!. Evita. Billy Elliot. School of Rock. Il Marchese del Grillo. Cats. Matilda. West Side Story. Priscilla joins a series of titles that brought the Sistina back to producing on its own.

Peep Arrow

Peep Arrow is the production company that works with the Sistina on the big musicals. For Priscilla it collaborates with Nullarbor Productions and MGM On Stage, that is, with the holders of the rights to the show and the film. It is a licensed production, with the original costumes, not a free adaptation.

Teatro Sistina, Italy's answer to Broadway

Teatro Sistina, at Via Sistina 129, was inaugurated on December 28, 1949 to a design by Marcello Piacentini and is one of the most important private theaters in Italy, with 1,015 seats in the orchestra and 566 in the gallery. The American magazine Variety called it the Italian answer to Broadway. The venue profile is Teatro Sistina.

A hall without columns

The hall is semicircular, 28 meters wide and 30 deep, without columns: from every seat the stage is seen without obstacles. For a musical with a bus on stage it is a merit best appreciated in the gallery.

The orchestra pit

The Sistina has an orchestra pit, indispensable for a show with live music like Priscilla.

The temple of musical comedy

From 1960 to 2006 the theater was run by Garinei and Giovannini, the authors of Rugantino and Aggiungi un posto a tavola. Since 2013 it has been run by Massimo Romeo Piparo. In the same season the Sistina also has on the program Il ragazzo dai pantaloni rosa.

Where to sit for Priscilla

For Priscilla the orchestra offers the impact of the costumes up close, the gallery the overall view of the choreography and the bus. The hall without columns makes almost all positions good.

Poltronissima and Poltrona

At €79 and €73 these are the orchestra sections. Poltrona, €6 less than Poltronissima, is the best compromise: you see the details of the costumes, which are the visual heart of the show.

The galleries

The first gallery, at €69, offers a complete front view. The second, at €61, remains good. The third gallery, at €39, is the cheapest and the farthest. For a musical of big ensemble numbers it remains a decent choice, and for those going to the theater with teenagers it makes the difference in the budget.

How to get to Teatro Sistina for Priscilla

Teatro Sistina is reached by metro line A, Barberini stop: from Piazza Barberini you go up Via Sistina and the theater is at number 129, a few minutes' walk away.

By Metro

Line A links Barberini to Termini in two stops and to San Giovanni and Ottaviano in a few minutes. For evening performances it is by far the simplest way to arrive and depart.

On foot from the center

Via Sistina links Piazza Barberini to Trinità dei Monti, at the top of the steps of Piazza di Spagna. From Piazza di Spagna you climb the steps and walk the street on the flat.

By car and taxi

The Sistina is in the historic center, inside the ZTL, so driving is not recommended. Those coming from out of town can leave the car in a garage outside the limited traffic zone and continue by Metro. For the evening return the taxi remains the most comfortable solution for those who don't live near Line A.

Via Sistina and the theater's surroundings

Teatro Sistina is between Piazza Barberini and Trinità dei Monti, in one of the most elegant areas of central Rome.

Piazza Barberini

At the foot of Via Sistina is Piazza Barberini, with Bernini's Triton Fountain. A little above, Palazzo Barberini houses the Galleria nazionale d'arte antica, opposite begins Via Veneto.

Trinità dei Monti and the Pincio

From the other end of Via Sistina you reach Trinità dei Monti and, continuing, the Pincio and Villa Borghese. For the Sunday afternoon performance, a walk on the Pincio in the morning is the ideal complement.

Toward Trevi

Going down from Piazza Barberini toward Via del Tritone you reach the Trevi Fountain in 10 minutes, less crowded in the evening, after the show.

Where to eat before and after Priscilla

The area between Piazza Barberini, Via Sistina and Piazza di Spagna has a wide offering of restaurants, trattorias and bars, with prices on average higher than in other neighborhoods.

Before 20:30

With the 20:30 start it is best to dine afterward, or to eat something quick beforehand around Piazza Barberini or toward Via del Tritone. A two-act musical ends late, and on an empty stomach the second act seems longer.

After the show

On the way out many kitchens in the center are still open, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. Going down toward Trevi and the Pantheon the choice increases. Those who want to spend less can move toward Monti, a few Metro stops away.

On Sundays

With the 16:00 performance the most convenient solution is a late lunch in the area or a dinner after the show, around 19:30, when restaurants reopen.

Accessibility, children and practical information

For accessibility needs, wheelchair seats and companions, the reference is the Teatro Sistina box office, to be contacted before buying.

With teenagers

Priscilla is a musical comedy about friendship and acceptance, but it has adult language and some adult scenes: in the film and the musical there are explicit jokes, moments of homophobia told without sugarcoating and a famous number with ping-pong balls. It suits teenagers, less so small children. The theater lists no age limits. In case of doubt, ask the box office.

Arriving on time

At the Sistina, as in all large theaters, latecomers enter only at specific moments. With a hall of over 1,500 seats, arriving 20 minutes early avoids lines at the coat check and entrances.

A curiosity about Priscilla La regina del deserto the musical at Teatro Sistina, from February 10, 2027

The most interesting curiosity concerns the role of Bernadette and Rome. In the script Bernadette is a transgender woman who made history in Sydney's nightlife scene, a former Les Girl whom Bob saw perform as a young woman. Vladimir Luxuria, who plays her at the Sistina, did something very similar in Rome: since 1993 she was artistic director of Muccassassina, the Circolo Mario Mieli night that became one of the most famous in the capital, with guests such as Grace Jones and Alexander McQueen. Character and performer share a biography of nighttime stages.

The second curiosity concerns the costumes. Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner, with the musical, won both the Olivier in London in 2010 and the Tony in New York in 2011, as well as the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle Award. Few costume designers can claim a series like that for the same title. At the Sistina you will see the original costumes of the English version.

The third: the Broadway production had among its producers Bette Midler, who decided to join the project after seeing the show in London.

One thing nobody tells you about Priscilla La regina del deserto the musical at Teatro Sistina, from February 10, 2027

What almost nobody says is that Priscilla has already been through Rome several times, but never at the Sistina. The first Italian production arrived at Teatro Brancaccio in 2013, returned to the city at the Gran Teatro in 2014 and again at the Brancaccio in December 2019. The 2027 one is a new production, with a new translation and a new direction, and above all with the songs in the original language and a live orchestra. Those who saw the earlier editions will not see the same show.

The second thing concerns the calendar. The official page lists only the debut date: from February 10. Sistina productions usually stay on stage for several weeks, but weekends fill up before other days. The Wednesday and Thursday evenings, at the same price, are the ones when it is easiest to find central seats.

The third: prices are the same for all performances, with no differences between days of the week. You might as well choose the evening when the hall is less crowded and the exit calmer.

The advice I give you for visiting Priscilla La regina del deserto the musical at Teatro Sistina, from February 10, 2027

Choose the Poltrona or the first gallery, not the Poltronissima. At €73 and €69 both offer a complete view in a hall without columns. The first gallery, in particular, lets you see the choreography and the bus on stage in full, and the bus looks better from above. Poltronissima costs €79 and gives closeness to the costumes, but for a show of ensemble numbers the right distance is worth more.

Second piece of advice: before going, relisten to the songs. Not to learn them, you already know them, but to remember that It's Raining Men, I Will Survive and Go West are songs to dance to. At the Sistina the finale often becomes a collective party, and those who arrive prepared have more fun.

Third: if you can, watch the film first. Released in 1994, it is a classic of Australian cinema, and finding again in the theater the image of the giant high heel on the roof of the bus is half the pleasure.

Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned

That the Sistina is the theater of Italian musical comedy everyone knows. Less often cited is how that story began: with a theater built between 1946 and 1949 on the site of the church of Santa Francesca Romana, along what was called Strada Felice, and inaugurated as a cinema-theater on December 28, 1949. For its first seasons it was also a movie house, and a group of industrialists even tried to turn it into a Cinerama hall, with a screen 27 meters wide and 11 high. The experiment failed.

The destiny of the Sistina was decided by Pietro Garinei and Sandro Giovannini, who ran it from 1960 to 2006 and made it the home of Italian-style musical comedy, from Rugantino to Aggiungi un posto a tavola. That is why Variety called it the Italian answer to Broadway.

Priscilla brings to the Sistina a musical truly born in the international circuit, between Sydney, the West End and Broadway: in a sense it is the fulfillment of that definition. The Italian answer to Broadway hosts, with the original costumes, a title that won a Tony on Broadway.

The right photo to take at Priscilla La regina del deserto the musical at Teatro Sistina, from February 10, 2027

The right photo is taken under the Sistina sign, on Via Sistina, with the Priscilla poster lit. The street is narrow and slightly uphill. The best spot is on the opposite sidewalk, a few meters toward Piazza Barberini, from which you frame the entrance with the title on the billboard.

The second photo is taken after the show, walking up toward Trinità dei Monti: at the top of Piazza di Spagna steps, in the evening, the view over lit Via dei Condotti and the dome of St. Peter's in the distance is one of the most beautiful panoramas in Rome, and in February there are few people.

In the hall the phone stays off: filming during a show of this kind is normally forbidden, and it disturbs the person sitting beside you. The moment to remember, the finale with the whole cast in costume, you will remember better without a screen in front of you.

Some important events that took place here in history

Teatro Sistina was inaugurated on December 28, 1949. The first film screened was Le mura di Malapaga, the first revue Bada che ti mangio by Remigio Paone with Totò and Isa Barzizza. Shortly after, the finale of Totò cerca moglie was shot in the theater. In October 1950 the curtain rose on La Bisarca by Pietro Garinei and Sandro Giovannini, with sets by Giulio Coltellacci. On December 15, 1952 Attanasio cavallo vanesio debuted with Renato Rascel, the first of a trilogy of musical fairy tales that opened the era of Italian musical comedy.

In 1953 Sandro Giovannini saw Delia Scala dance at the Sistina itself and decided she would be the lead of their musical theater. From 1960 to 2006 the management was Garinei and Giovannini's, and the Sistina saw the birth of Rugantino, Aggiungi un posto a tavola, Il giorno della tartaruga, Un paio d'ali, Alleluja brava gente.

Since 2013 the artistic direction has been Massimo Romeo Piparo's, who brought the Sistina back to producing musicals on its own: Jesus Christ Superstar with Ted Neeley, Mamma Mia!, Cats, Billy Elliot, West Side Story. Priscilla, from February 10, 2027, is the new chapter of this story.

Who has played Priscilla La regina del deserto the musical at Teatro Sistina, from February 10, 2027

Through the Sistina stage have passed the big names of Italian entertainment, many of whom debuted here or were made famous here: Marcello Mastroianni, Renato Rascel, Delia Scala, Carlo Dapporto, Aldo Fabrizi, Walter Chiari, Gino Bramieri, Johnny Dorelli, Paolo Panelli, Bice Valori, Enrico Montesano, Gigi Proietti, Mariangela Melato, Sabrina Ferilli, Valerio Mastandrea, Massimo Ghini, Serena Autieri. And Totò, who opened its theater season.

In the years of Piparo's direction the Sistina has hosted concerts by John Legend, Massimo Ranieri, Ornella Vanoni, Renzo Arbore and Fiorello, and musicals with Ted Neeley, who in film had been Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar.

Vladimir Luxuria comes to the Sistina from a career that has crossed theater, film, politics and television. It is not her first time in musical theater: from 2001 to 2003 she toured with Emozioni, directed by Sergio Japino. In the role of Bernadette, which in Sydney, London and on Broadway was Tony Sheldon's, nominated for the Tony Award for that part, she brings on stage a character whom her biography has in some way anticipated. In a hall that has consecrated generations of performers, it is a debut the Roman audience will remember.

February in Rome with Priscilla

In February Rome is in the thick of the theater season and outside the big tourist flows: it is the best moment for an evening at the Sistina and a walk in the center without crowds.

Carnival

Priscilla's debut falls close to Carnival. A musical made of sequins, wigs and stiletto heels is the closest thing to a masquerade party that the Roman theater season can offer.

Other musicals in town

In the same weeks the Teatro Brancaccio offers Raffaella il Musical, another tribute to freedom and joy of living. Those who love the genre have in February 2027 two good reasons to go back to the theater.
