Language: performed in Italian. No English version or English surtitles are announced.

Toilet is a show built on a very simple and cruel idea: a man locked in the restroom of a highway service area, a phone in his hand, and nobody who knows where he is. Pignotta wrote it for himself, alone on stage, and has already taken it to the movies. At Piccolo Eliseo, a hall of about 265 seats, it finds the scale that suits it best: close, intimate, with the audience almost inside that locked room. It's a comedy, and people laugh, but anyone who knows Pignotta's theater knows that behind the laughter there is always a contemporary man pushed into a corner.

Toilet at Piccolo Eliseo: what the show is about

Toilet tells the day of Flavio Bretagna, a salesman who stops at a small service area, goes into the restroom still glued to his phone and can't get out again: the door is stuck and nobody knows where he is, not even him.

The plot

Bretagna is driving, answering one call after another, and he needs a break. He stops at an ordinary highway service area without taking note of where he is, goes into the restroom and, when it's time to leave, the door won't open. It looks like a joke, then it becomes a problem, then a nightmare. There's nobody outside. From that moment the protagonist tries every way to get out, and the only tool he has is the phone: he calls the carabinieri marshal, his secretary, and a series of unexpected characters, including the people who left their notes written on the restroom walls.

A dramedy

The official description calls Toilet a dramedy, a cross between comedy and drama. It's an accurate definition. The show holds together three registers: the comedy of the situations and the phone calls, the suspense of an imprisonment that grows more and more tense, and introspection. After hours of confinement, the service area restroom becomes a space where the protagonist's unconscious also takes shape, and from there no escape is possible.

A man alone on stage

Pignotta is the only actor on stage. The other characters exist through the phone: voices, calls, messages. It's a considerable challenge for an actor, because the whole tension of the evening rests on a single body in a closed space. In contemporary theater the monologue in a room is an old form, while the phone as the only bridge to the world is a very present-day idea, and perhaps that is exactly why the show has found a wide audience.

The creative team

Artistic supervision is by Cristina Vaccaro, original music by Stefano Switala, sets by Tiziana Liberotti, lighting by Maximiliano Lumachi, assistant direction by Julie Ciccarelli. The production is by Artisti Associati, Centro di Produzione Teatrale, the same company that produced with Pignotta the stage adaptation of Tre uomini e una culla.

From the stage to the screen and back

Toilet was born on stage in 2019. In 2021 Pignotta shot the film version, produced by Vision Distribution and Fenix Entertainment, written, directed and performed by him, and the film came out in 2022. The return to the stage, after the move to the screen, is the reverse of the usual path: normally it's films that become stage shows. Here it's the show that, after the screen, goes back to its original form, with what film can't give, the breath of a live hall.

Gabriele Pignotta: biography and career

Gabriele Pignotta was born in Rome on October 12, 1977, and is a director, actor, playwright, screenwriter and teacher. For more than 20 years he has been writing, directing and performing comedies for the Italian stage.

His training

While cultivating a passion for theater and film from a young age, Pignotta graduated from Sapienza University in Sociology of Education and Human Resources Management and worked as a trainer and activity designer for several multinationals. It's a biographical detail that explains a lot: his characters are often managers, salesmen, office workers, men caught up in corporate logic, and Flavio Bretagna, the salesman in Toilet, belongs to the same family.

The television years

In 1994 he won the Castrocaro Festival as a new face. In 1995 he co-wrote Navigator, the Rai 1 program by Raffaella Carrà and Sergio Japino, and in 1996 he wrote for Eurotrash on Italia 1 and for Segreti e bugie. In the early 2000s he was a regular comic guest on Al posto tuo on Rai 2, on Sabato italiano on Rai 1 with Pippo Baudo and on Settima dimensione on La7. In 2006 he was the writer and host of two programs for Sky, Shake it and The soup.

His debut as a playwright

In 2002 he made his debut with a comedy written, directed and performed by himself, Maschio non mi somigli affatto. In 2004 came Una notte bianca, which made his name first in Roman theater circles and then nationally, and which won him the Premio Vittorio Gassman for best play. In 2006 he wrote Scusa sono in riunione, the title that would accompany him more than any other over the years.

The hit comedies

From 2007 Pignotta devoted himself mainly to theater. He wrote, directed and performed Ti sposo ma non troppo in 2007, Se tutto va male divento famoso in 2008, Mi piaci perché sei così in 2009, revived in 2014 alongside Vanessa Incontrada, and Contrazioni pericolose in 2015. In 2017 he wrote and directed Non mi hai più detto ti amo with Lorella Cuccarini and Giampiero Ingrassia and acted in Ostaggi by Angelo Longoni, and in 2018 he was in the cast of Che disastro di commedia, the Italian version of The Play That Goes Wrong.

Scusa sono in riunione and recent years

In January 2020 the new production of Scusa sono in riunione opened, with Pignotta alongside Vanessa Incontrada, and it was a big national success until 2022. In 2020 he directed Favola mia by and with Giorgio Panariello, and in 2021 he directed and performed Tre uomini e una culla, an adaptation of the film by Coline Serreau, with Giorgio Lupano, Attilio Fontana and Fabio Avaro. In 2025 he brought Ti sposo ma non troppo back to the stage with Vanessa Incontrada.

Gabriele Pignotta and film

Pignotta wrote the story and screenplay of Sotto una buona stella by Carlo Verdone, awarded the Biglietto d'oro, and has directed five feature films, the latest of which is Toilet itself.

Actor on the big screen

As a film actor he has worked in Amore 14 by Federico Moccia, La vita è una cosa meravigliosa by Carlo Vanzina, Immaturi, il viaggio by Paolo Genovese, Colpi di fulmine by Neri Parenti, Pazze di me by Fausto Brizzi and, more recently, in Da grandi, also by Brizzi, in 2023.

Screenwriter and director

In 2014 he wrote Sotto una buona stella for Carlo Verdone and, in the same year, brought his comedy Ti sposo ma non troppo to the screen, as director and screenwriter, acting alongside Vanessa Incontrada. Also in 2014 he wrote Un Natale stupefacente for Volfango De Biasi. In 2015 he shot the documentary Pequeños Hermanos in South America, and in 2018 he directed the fantasy film Ötzi e il mistero del tempo, which won an award at the Giffoni Film Festival.

The campaigns against violence against women

For three years in a row Pignotta wrote and directed a campaign against violence against women, with three short films: Un'altra storia, with Claudia Gerini, Alessandra Mastronardi and Giorgio Pasotti, which received a special mention at the 2015 Nastri d'argento, Ancora un'altra storia, with Raoul Bova and Ambra Angiolini, and L'amore che vorrei, with Michelle Hunziker and Michela Andreozzi.

Toilet on screen

In 2021 Pignotta shot his fifth feature film, Toilet, produced by Vision Distribution and Fenix Entertainment, written, directed and performed by him. The film came out in 2022. Anyone who has seen it will find the same story at the theater, but in another dimension: film can open the door to the outside, the stage keeps it shut until the end.

How to watch Toilet: tips for the audience

Toilet is a comedy with a single actor and a single setting, so it's worth sitting in a central position, from where you catch every detail of the set and of the protagonist's reactions.

The set as a prison

Tiziana Liberotti's sets have to convey a highway service area restroom, one of the most anonymous places there is. It's precisely the anonymity that makes the situation work: nobody remembers a service area restroom, and that is why nobody knows where Bretagna is. Watch how the set changes with Maximiliano Lumachi's lighting, as the show moves from the realistic level to that of the unconscious.

The phone as co-star

In Toilet the phone is both the cause and the cure. Bretagna goes into the restroom distracted by calls, and the calls are the only way out. It's a reversal that speaks to anyone who spends the day with a smartphone in hand, and the audience laughs partly because it recognizes itself.

Our opinion

Pignotta's theater has often been labeled light comedy, and in part it is. Toilet is his riskiest work, because it strips away everything that normally holds up a comedy: the duets, the mix-ups between couples, the rhythm of a cast. What remains is one actor with a script. It's the show to see to understand what he can really do.

Piccolo Eliseo, the second hall of Teatro Eliseo

Piccolo Eliseo is the smaller hall of Teatro Eliseo on Via Nazionale: about 265 seats, carved out of the theater's old Ridotto and devoted since the 2000s mainly to contemporary playwriting.

From Arena Nazionale to Eliseo

It all began in 1900 with an open-air wooden theater, the Arena Nazionale. On September 24, 1910, Teatro Apollo opened in its place, built in masonry, with a reinforced concrete structure by the firm of Giovanni Antonio Porcheddu. In May 1918, under the management of Mentore Clerici, the theater took the name Eliseo, chosen through a competition.

The Ridotto and Sala Apollo

The hall that now hosts Toilet has a history of its own. As early as 1912 the theater's Ridotto was separated from the rest of the building and run as a nightclub, a café chantant called Sala Apollo. In October 1977, under the management of Giuseppe Battista, the Ridotto was rebuilt and renamed Piccolo Eliseo. There's a nice consistency in the fact that a hall born for light entertainment now hosts a comedy.

The 1938 rebuilding

The building you see today opened on January 5, 1938, after six months of rebuilding. The main hall has about 760 seats. For almost 40 years the theater was run by Vincenzo Torraca, who made it one of the leading stages of Italian drama.

The 2026-2027 season

After the long closure that began in March 2020, Eliseo announced on its website the 2026-2027 season of Piccolo Eliseo, run by Viola Produzioni. Toilet comes right after Turbati come siamo, pallidi di preoccupazioni by Lucia Calamaro, described in the page on Turbati come siamo at Piccolo Eliseo: two very different pieces of writing, one comic and one poetic, which show well the range of the program.

A curious fact about Toilet at Piccolo Eliseo, from October 27 to November 8, 2026

The best curious fact concerns the place. The hall where Pignotta stays locked in a service area restroom was born in 1912 as a café chantant: Sala Apollo, carved out of the theater's Ridotto and run separately from the rest of the building. It was the Eliseo's nightclub, with variety acts, songs and comic numbers. More than a century later, within those same walls, people laugh again at a comedy that uses the language of popular entertainment to talk about loneliness.

The second curious fact concerns the protagonist. Flavio Bretagna is a salesman, and Pignotta, before becoming a playwright, worked as a trainer for multinationals, after a degree in Sociology of Education and Human Resources Management. He knows that world of phone calls, targets and meetings well, and his most successful title is called Scusa sono in riunione. In Toilet that world suddenly jams, with a door that won't open.

The third is chronological. Toilet premiered on stage in 2019, a few months before March 2020 shut everyone indoors. A show about a man locked in a room, who communicates with the world only by phone, takes on a meaning today that it couldn't have had when it was written.

Via Nazionale and the Monti district around Piccolo Eliseo

Piccolo Eliseo faces Via Nazionale, the great 19th-century avenue between Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza Venezia, on the edge of the Monti district and at the foot of the Quirinal.

Palazzo delle Esposizioni

On the same side of the street, a few steps away, is Palazzo delle Esposizioni, opened in 1883 to a design by Pio Piacentini, the first Italian building built specifically for the fine arts. In autumn it hosts the exhibition described in the page on Richard Avedon, In the American West: an afternoon at the exhibition and a matinee at the theater make a full Saturday.

Toward Piazza della Repubblica

Going uphill you reach Piazza della Repubblica, with the Baths of Diocletian and the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, created by Michelangelo inside the halls of the baths. A little farther on, Palazzo Massimo alle Terme holds the frescoes and bronzes of the Museo Nazionale Romano.

The Quirinal

Behind the theater rises the Quirinal Hill. The Quirinal Palace and Scuderie del Quirinale are a few minutes' walk away, uphill.

Monti and the Forums

Going down toward Via Cavour you enter the Monti district, with its shops, stairways and small squares: the page on what to see in Monti lists its stops. Toward the Imperial Forums you reach Trajan's Markets.

Something nobody tells you about Toilet at Piccolo Eliseo, from October 27 to November 8, 2026

What the descriptions don't say is how rare it is, in Italian commercial theater, to find a one-actor comic show that isn't stand-up or an autobiographical monologue. Toilet is a real comedy with a plot, characters and one twist after another, except that all the characters but one are offstage. The audience builds them in its imagination, through Bretagna's reactions on the phone. It's a more theatrical mechanism than it seems, because it rests entirely on the pact between actor and audience.

The second thing that is rarely said is that Pignotta has built a large part of his career as a director of other actors, often in tandem with Vanessa Incontrada, and as a writer for Carlo Verdone's films. Toilet is the show where he exposes himself most: no partner, no supporting cast. Anyone who has only seen him alongside Incontrada in Scusa sono in riunione or in Ti sposo ma non troppo will find a different Pignotta, more nervous and more exposed.

Third point, a practical one: Piccolo Eliseo is a small hall, and in a show that plays on claustrophobia the closeness between stage and audience matters. Here you feel the locked room on your skin, in a way that couldn't happen in a big theater.

My advice for seeing Toilet at Piccolo Eliseo, from October 27 to November 8, 2026

Choose, if you can, a weekday evening show. The 20:00 performances from Tuesday to Friday have an audience of Romans coming out of the office, exactly the world of Flavio Bretagna: the laughter in the hall comes from recognition, and with that audience you can feel it. The 17:00 matinees on Saturday and Sunday are better suited to people coming from out of town or with teenagers.

Second tip: the launch promotion listed on the theater's official website expired on October 19, so buy in good time. The hall has about 265 seats, and a title that already has a film behind it can fill up fast, especially on the last weekend, with the matinees on Saturday, November 7, and Sunday, November 8.

Third: if you haven't seen the film, don't watch it beforehand. Toilet works on surprise, and the live show is the form it was conceived for. If you liked the show, catch the film afterward, and comparing the two versions is instructive.

Where to buy

Tickets are sold at the Teatro Eliseo box office on Via Nazionale and through the authorized presale network listed by the theater on the show's page. Prices and any discounts are published on the official Teatro Eliseo website.

The launch promotion

The official website offered a launch promotion for Toilet, valid until October 19 and now expired. The conditions are given on the show's page.

Running time

The running time is not published. To plan the trip home, those attending evening shows can count on getting out in time for the buses on Via Nazionale.

How to get to Piccolo Eliseo for Toilet

Piccolo Eliseo is at Via Nazionale 183, and the easiest way to get there is by bus: Via Nazionale is served by lines 64, 70, 71, 117, 170 and H, which connect it to Termini station and Piazza Venezia.

By metro

With Metro A you get off at Repubblica and walk down Via Nazionale for about 10 minutes. With Metro B you get off at Cavour and walk back up toward Via Nazionale through Monti. The best choice is Repubblica: you follow the main line of the street and you can't get lost.

From Termini

From Piazza dei Cinquecento, the lines heading down Via Nazionale toward Piazza Venezia drop you near Palazzo delle Esposizioni, a few steps from the theater. On foot, via Piazza della Repubblica, it takes a quarter of an hour.

By car

The car is not recommended. The area is central, parking is hard, and the rules for access to the historic center should be checked before setting off. If you must come by car, look for a multistory parking garage in the Termini area and allow time for the walk.

Getting back

With the evening shows at 20:00 you get out while Via Nazionale is still served by buses and the metro is within walking distance. If you live on the outskirts, check the times of the last runs anyway.

Another well-known fact, yet seldom mentioned

It's well known that Eliseo is one of the historic theaters of Italian drama. It's less often remembered that it was also the home of great Roman and Neapolitan comedy. In the 1930s the stage on Via Nazionale saw Ettore Petrolini, Totò, Macario and Anna Magnani, who in 1935 was the star of the Grande Compagnia Spettacoli Eliseo. In 1936 the De Filippos staged Natale in casa Cupiello there, and Eduardo would later choose Eliseo as his theater in Rome.

The thread linking Toilet to this history is comedy born from observing everyday life. Petrolini built his characters on the Roman types of his time, and Eduardo staged the lower-middle-class family. Pignotta works on the office man of the 2000s, always on the phone, always in a rush. The register is different, the principle is the same: making people laugh at what the audience knows very well.

There's another rarely mentioned detail. Between the 1950s and 1960s, at Eliseo, the Compagnia dei Giovani staged the first new plays by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, from Metti una sera a cena onward. There too an author was writing for his own time and his own generation. Since the 2000s, Piccolo Eliseo has made this vocation its identity.

The right photo to take at Toilet at Piccolo Eliseo, from October 27 to November 8, 2026

No photos or filming in the hall: in a show where the phone is the protagonist's enemy and ally, keeping yours switched off is also a small exercise in consistency. The right photo is taken before or after, outside.

The first is the facade of Eliseo on Via Nazionale, shot from the opposite sidewalk at the time the lights come on, with the evening traffic flowing past. For the 20:00 evening shows at the end of October it's already dark, and the theater's lit sign on the street is a very Roman image.

The second is the Toilet poster at the entrance. The show's official image, with the title and Pignotta's name, is the simplest and also the most effective keepsake of the evening, and if you want a photo of yourself, take it there.

The third, for those going to the Saturday and Sunday matinees, is Palazzo delle Esposizioni a little farther up, with its great entrance arch. At the end of October, between 16:00 and 17:00, the low sunset light on the white facade is the best of the day.

Where to eat before or after Toilet

Around Piccolo Eliseo you eat better heading down toward the Monti district, while Via Nazionale is mostly bars, cafés and quick places.

Before the evening show

With a 20:00 start, a substantial aperitivo or an early dinner is the way to go. On Via Nazionale and toward Piazza della Repubblica there are bars and quick places for a half-hour stop, and Palazzo delle Esposizioni has a café inside.

After the evening show

After the show the best choice is Monti: trattorias, osterias and small places serving Roman and international food, a few minutes' walk away. On Friday it's wise to book. The rule: on Via Nazionale you have coffee, in Monti you have dinner.

After the matinee

The 17:00 performances end at aperitivo time. It's the moment for a stroll among the shops of Monti and an early dinner before heading home.

Some important events that happened here

The history of Eliseo coincides with a century of Italian theater. In 1900 the Arena Nazionale, an open-air wooden stage, on September 24, 1910, Teatro Apollo, with Porcheddu's reinforced concrete structure, in 1912 the separate Ridotto that became Sala Apollo, and in May 1918 the name Eliseo. In 1935 the Grande Compagnia Spettacoli Eliseo was founded with Anna Magnani, and on January 5, 1938, the theater reopened in its current form, with Vincenzo Torraca as director.

On January 30, 1945, with the war not yet over, Luchino Visconti made his debut as a stage director with Cocteau's Les Parents terribles. His Compagnia italiana di prosa staged A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman and Three Sisters, and on February 23, 1961, Testori's L'Arialda was seized for obscenity. In the 1950s and 1960s came Proclemer and Albertazzi, the Compagnia dei Quattro, and Strehler's Piccolo of Milan.

In October 1977 Giuseppe Battista took over the management, the Ridotto was rebuilt and Piccolo Eliseo was born, and the season opened with Enrico IV by Romolo Valli and Giorgio De Lullo. In the 1980s and 1990s the artistic direction passed to Rossella Falk and Umberto Orsini. In 2015 the theater reopened with Luca Barbareschi, who bought it in 2018, and from March 2020 it remained closed for a long time, until the 2026-2027 season announced on the official website.

Accessibility and young people at Toilet

Piccolo Eliseo is a hall of about 265 seats in a historic building, so for wheelchair access, reserved seats and facilities it's best to contact the box office before buying.

Reduced mobility

In the historic theaters of the center, access to the smaller halls may involve stairs or alternative routes. If you have specific needs, mention them when booking. A taxi to the entrance on Via Nazionale is the most convenient solution.

With teenagers

Toilet is a comedy and it's funny, but it's meant for an adult audience: the phone calls, work, the fear of being locked in, facing yourself. For kids from the last years of middle school up, at the weekend matinee, it's a good way to discover that comic theater isn't just cabaret. It's not the right show for small children.

Who has passed through Toilet at Piccolo Eliseo, from October 27 to November 8, 2026

Almost the entire Italian stage of the 20th century has passed through Eliseo. In the 1930s Ettore Petrolini, Totò, Macario, Anna Magnani, and among the great names of drama Emma Gramatica, Maria Melato, Angelo Musco, Paola Borboni. The resident company brought together Andreina Pagnani, Gino Cervi, Rina Morelli and Paolo Stoppa, and the De Filippos performed Natale in casa Cupiello there in 1936.

With Visconti came Ruggero Ruggeri, Arnoldo Foà, Franco Zeffirelli, Marcello Mastroianni and Vittorio Gassman, whose name today also recalls the award for best play that Pignotta received in 2004 for Una notte bianca. Then Anna Proclemer and Giorgio Albertazzi, Giorgio Strehler, Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, Romolo Valli and Giorgio De Lullo.

In the 1980s and 1990s Rossella Falk, Umberto Orsini, Gabriele Lavia, Monica Vitti performed The Odd Couple there directed by Franca Valeri, Mariangela Melato was Medea for Giancarlo Sepe, and Nino Manfredi brought his shows. Since the 2000s Piccolo Eliseo has opened up to new playwriting. With Toilet comes a Roman author who has made comedy his trade and who, for once, takes the stage alone.

Late October in Rome: theater takes the stage again

Between the end of October and the beginning of November the Roman theater season gets into full swing, and the All Saints' long weekend, with Sunday, November 1, fell right in the middle of the run of Toilet.

The weather

At the end of October Roman evenings are still mild, but with the end of daylight saving time, on the last Sunday of October, darkness comes early. For the 17:00 matinees you go in with daylight and come out with the shop windows lit.

A day on Via Nazionale

A Toilet matinee goes well with a morning at Trajan's Markets or a visit to Scuderie del Quirinale, and an evening show with a stroll in Monti at aperitivo time. If you come from outside Rome for the long weekend, Via Nazionale is a convenient starting point, a few minutes from Termini.

The guide's opinion on Toilet

If I had to recommend a comic show in Rome this autumn to a friend, I'd tell them Toilet, and I'd tell them to go to a weekday evening show, straight from the office, with their phone still warm in their pocket. It's a show where you laugh at yourself without noticing, in an intimate hall that began its life as a café chantant and has known the craft of making people laugh for more than a century. Get to Via Nazionale half an hour early, switch off your phone, and let Bretagna be the one who stays locked in.
