The series traces the history of Teatro di Roma starting from the birth of the Stabile in 1965 and highlights its key stages through the faces of the artistic directors who shaped its path. The third meeting is devoted to Luigi Squarzina, director, actor, scholar and university professor, who led the theater from 1976 to 1983. The occasion coincides with the 50th anniversary of the start of his tenure.
«Note di regia» is edited by Maria Ida Biggi and Silvia Danesi Squarzina and published by Marsilio. It collects a selection of the director's notes and studies Squarzina wrote between 1944 and 2006 to accompany his productions, devoted to works ranging from antiquity to the present day. In its pages the director carefully describes his aesthetic thinking and the idea of directing as a creative unity. The book is the latest result of the work of the National Committee for the centenary of Squarzina's birth, promoted by the Istituto per il Teatro e il Melodramma of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini between 2022 and 2025.
Speakers include Francesco Siciliano, president of Teatro di Roma, Luca De Fusco, artistic director, and Maurizio Roi, general manager, along with Mariagabriella Cambiaghi of the University of Milan La Statale, Valeria Della Valle of Sapienza, Francesco Giasi, director of the Fondazione Gramsci, which holds Squarzina's archive, and Gabriele Pedullà of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. The moderator is Maria Ida Biggi, who works at Ca' Foscari University of Venice and at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, where Squarzina's library is kept. The editors are also present.
In the small lounge next to Sala Squarzina there's a small exhibition with programs, photographs and posters from the years of his tenure.
Where it takes place: Teatro Argentina
Teatro Argentina was created at the initiative of the Sforza Cesarini family, who started the project in 1730, and it opened on January 31, 1732 with «Berenice» by Domenico Sarro. The horseshoe-shaped hall was designed by Gerolamo Theodoli and the facade was added in 1826 by Pietro Holl.
Its stage saw Rossini's «The Barber of Seville», on February 20, 1816, and two Verdi operas, «I due Foscari» in 1844 and «La battaglia di Legnano» in 1849. Today it is the main home of the Fondazione Teatro di Roma, which also includes Teatro India, Teatro Torlonia and Teatro Valle.
