It's produced by Altra Scena. The theater is reached by Metro A, Vittorio Emanuele stop, a few minutes' walk away, or by the buses running along Via Merulana. Satire, irony and sharp reflections on contemporary society: that's how the Brancaccio presents the evening. After the sold-out shows and more than 80 dates of Fall, the comedian from the Marche returns with a brand-new monologue, billed as sharper than ever, to dismantle the clichés of what the presentation calls our "Bel Pensante Paese", our right-thinking country.
Giorgio Montanini at the Brancaccio: date, time and prices
Giorgio Montanini is on at Teatro Brancaccio on Sunday, May 2, 2027, starting at 21:00, for a single Rome night.
A Sunday evening
May 2, 2027 is a Sunday, the day after May Day. The time, 21:00, is the classic one for comedy nights on Via Merulana: you come out shortly after 22:30, in time for the metro or a late dinner.
Published prices
The price list on the official page shows three full-price tiers: €35 in the Poltrona, €30 in the first balcony A, €25 in the second balcony A. The theater's booking system also names Poltronissima Gold, Gold Vip, Poltronissima, Poltronissima A and B, Poltrona A and B, first balcony B and second balcony B: prices for these sections appear when you choose your seat.
Where to buy tickets
The show's page on the Brancaccio website has a buy button linking to the authorized presale network, and a booking form by date and section. The box office at Via Merulana 244 is open Tuesday to Saturday from 16:00 to 19:00, on Sunday it opens only at showtime, and it's closed on Monday.
The box office on Sunday
For a Sunday date this detail matters: if you want to buy in person, go to the box office by Saturday, May 1, or turn up that evening, when the box office opens for the show, at the risk of finding the best sections already taken.
Giorgio Montanini's new show
Giorgio Montanini Live is a brand-new stand-up monologue, following the Fall tour: the Brancaccio's presentation speaks of satire, irony and sharp reflections on contemporary society.
After Fall
Fall, Montanini's 14th original monologue, played more than 80 dates across Italy, according to the theater, with several sell-outs. The new show grows out of that: the presentation calls it a new work that brings the comedian back on stage sharper than ever.
The target
The stated target is the clichés of the "Bel Pensante Paese", a phrase the presentation uses to allude to the conformism of good intentions. It has always been Montanini's territory: satire as the dismantling of the opinions everyone takes for granted, without the safety net of political correctness.
What to expect
Montanini's stand-up is a first-person monologue, with no characters and no set, built on a line of thought that moves in thrusts. The evening's title, Live, gives away no themes: if you know his previous shows, you know the material is discovered in the hall, and that the evening is meant for an adult audience.
Who Giorgio Montanini is
Giorgio Montanini is a stand-up comedian, writer and actor, one of the pioneers of stand-up comedy in Italy: in 2008 he joined the collective Satiriasi, which the Brancaccio describes as the first Italian stand-up experiment.
Classical theater
His debut was far from comedy: in 2004 he made his stage debut in Sophocles's Oedipus Rex, directed by Franco Branciaroli. A training as a straight actor that still shows in the stage presence of his monologues, always written and performed with precision.
Satiriasi and the first monologues
After joining Satiriasi, in 2011 he took his first show, Nibiru, to several Italian theaters, followed by Un uomo qualunque. Since then the monologues have come regularly: Fall is the 14th, and the May 2027 one is the next.
Television
In 2013 he was a regular guest and writer on #Aggratis! on Rai 2. In 2014 he starred in Nemico pubblico on Rai 3, his first show, written with Filippo Giardina, Francesco De Carlo, Paolo Lizza and Giovanni Filippetto, and the same year, with Satiriasi, he brought stand-up to Comedy Central with Stand Up Comedy, renewed in 2015. Also in 2014 he took over the satirical opening segment of Ballarò on Rai 3, replacing Maurizio Crozza. Nemico pubblico returned in 2015 for eight episodes and was renewed for two more seasons.
Film
Alongside the stage, Montanini has worked in film: Questa è la mia terra 2, Liberi di giocare, and then Pietro Castellitto's I predatori and Enea, Riccardo Milani's Grazie ragazzi, Mia with Edoardo Leo, Damiano Giacomelli's Castelrotto, Valerio Mastandrea's Nonostante and Edoardo Leo's Per te.
Montanini's monologues, from Nibiru to Fall
Giorgio Montanini's monologues number 14 up to Fall, and several have sold out Italy's biggest theaters, according to the bio published by the Brancaccio.
The titles
After those first two pieces, the official bio lists eight more monologues before Fall, including a stage version of Nemico pubblico, a show about the dangers of doing good, one built around a loser's eloquence and one with a pop star's name in the title.
A title as a statement
Read in sequence, the titles tell a story: irony toward performative goodness in "Deliver us from good", the defeated self-portrait in "A loser's eloquence", the awkward stance of someone who belongs to no camp in "When I was nowhere". They're titles that say where the comedian is looking from, even before what he's looking at.
A monologue a year
Regularity is a hallmark: Montanini writes and tours a new piece almost every year, and each show is honed over dozens of dates before making way for the next. The May 2 evening is one stop on this path.
What a stand-up night at the Brancaccio is like
A stand-up night in a big hall has different rules from a club: the comedian is alone, the audience is large, and collective attention is part of the show.
Silence and laughter
In Montanini's stand-up the rhythm is made of sentences built to land on the last word. A ringing phone or a loud comment breaks a joke the comedian has prepared for months. The best way to take part is to listen, laugh when the punch lands and let the hall react on its own.
Interaction with the audience
In stand-up the comedian sometimes speaks directly to those in the front rows. If you don't like being singled out, you may prefer a row farther back or the balcony, and if you want direct contact, the center orchestra is the right place.
Running time
The theater doesn't publish the running time. Stand-up monologues usually hold a single evening without a set: expect to come out late and plan your way home accordingly.
A curious fact about Giorgio Montanini Live at Teatro Brancaccio, May 2, 2027
The most interesting curious fact concerns Maurizio Crozza. In 2014 Giorgio Montanini was asked to take over the satirical opening segment of Ballarò on Rai 3, which until then had been Crozza's: a passing of the baton between two opposite ways of doing TV satire, impersonation and the first-person monologue. For many viewers it was the discovery of a comedian who wore no masks.
The second curious fact is his debut. Before becoming one of the names of Italian stand-up, Montanini debuted in 2004 in a Greek tragedy, Sophocles's Oedipus Rex, directed by Franco Branciaroli. The comedian who dismantles society's clichés started from the text that more than any other tells of discovering a truth nobody wants to see.
The third concerns Nemico pubblico: the Rai 3 show was written together with Filippo Giardina, Francesco De Carlo, Paolo Lizza and Giovanni Filippetto, some of the names who built Italian stand-up in the same years as Satiriasi. A show born from a collective workshop of comedians.
Teatro Brancaccio, the hall on Via Merulana
Teatro Brancaccio, at Via Merulana 244, is one of Rome's largest halls: since 1937 it has had two foyers, a large orchestra and two balcony levels, and today it's run by Viola Produzioni, which alternates musicals, drama, dance, concerts and comedy.
Orchestra and balconies
The orchestra is divided into Poltronissima and Poltrona, with A and B bands and Gold sections, and above are the first balcony, split into A and B, and the second balcony, also in A and B. The balconies are reached on foot.
Stand-up in a big hall
Stand-up was born in clubs and small venues, and bringing it to a hall this size means filling hundreds of seats with one man and a microphone. From the orchestra you keep direct contact with the comedian, and from the first balcony you hear the hall react.
Via Merulana complex
The main hall is part of a complex that includes the Brancaccino, a smaller theater for contemporary drama and children's theater, a training area and a terrace over Via Merulana.
Something nobody tells you about Giorgio Montanini Live at Teatro Brancaccio, May 2, 2027
What nobody tells you is that the May 2 date is the only one, and it falls on the May Day weekend, which in 2027 is a Saturday. If you're coming from out of town, remember that trains and hotels on a holiday weekend fill up early, and for the Sunday night trip home, check transit times in advance.
The second thing concerns the box office. On Sunday it opens only at showtime and on Saturday it closes at 19:00: if you want to choose your seat in person, the last useful window is the afternoon of Saturday, May 1, a holiday, so check if it's open by writing to the box office.
The third concerns tone. The presentation promises a sharper-than-ever Montanini: it's explicit comedy that doesn't soften its themes and doesn't seek the hall's approval. If you arrive expecting TV cabaret, you may be thrown, and if you know Nemico pubblico, you know that's exactly the point.
How to get to Teatro Brancaccio
Teatro Brancaccio is at Via Merulana 244, in Esquilino, less than a kilometer from Termini station and a few steps from the Vittorio Emanuele stop on Metro A.
By metro
The nearest stop is Vittorio Emanuele, line A: you come out on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and reach Via Merulana in a few minutes. Alternatively there's the Cavour stop on line B, with a longer walk.
By bus
The theater lists the Merulana/Brancaccio and Merulana/Mecenate stops, served by lines 16, 75, 714, 717 and C3, and the Labicana/Merulana stop, with lines 3, 53, 75, 85, 87, 186, 571, 810, C3 and the night bus N10. For Sunday evening, check times and frequencies on the transit company's journey planner.
By taxi
The taxi stands listed by the theater are on Largo Brancaccio, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Via Principe Amedeo, Via Giolitti and Via Venosta. At the end of the show the Largo Brancaccio stand empties fast.
By car
The theater doesn't list partner garages and parking in Esquilino in the evening is hard. If you're coming from outside Rome, leave the car near a metro station and continue by metro.
My tip for Giorgio Montanini Live at Teatro Brancaccio, May 2, 2027
My tip is to choose the orchestra, even the center rows of the Poltrona, at €35. In stand-up the comedian's face, pauses and glances at the audience do half the work, and up close you catch the rhythm of the writing, which in Montanini is tight and allows no dead time. The balcony is fine if you'd rather save and hear the hall's reaction as a whole.
My second tip is about preparation. If you've never seen Montanini live, look up a few clips of Nemico pubblico or his Ballarò segment: a few minutes are enough to grasp the register and decide if it's the right night for you. In our opinion it's best to go knowing it's unfiltered satire, so you can enjoy it rather than endure it.
The third is practical: Sunday, May 2 closes the May Day weekend. Take the metro, get to Via Merulana half an hour early and treat yourself to an aperitivo nearby, leaving the car at home.
Another well-known fact, yet one rarely mentioned
It's well known that Giorgio Montanini is a TV comedian, known for Nemico pubblico and the Ballarò segment. Much less often mentioned is that in recent years he has also become a film actor sought after by very different directors: Pietro Castellitto cast him in his films I predatori and Enea, Riccardo Milani in Grazie ragazzi, Valerio Mastandrea in Nonostante, and Edoardo Leo in Mia and Per te. A path that took him far from the stand-up microphone, without his ever giving up the monologues.
A second rarely mentioned fact concerns the history of stand-up in Italy. When Satiriasi was born in 2008, the format of the lone comedian on stage, speaking in the first person without characters, was almost unknown to Italian audiences, used to catchphrase cabaret. Today stand-up fills Rome's biggest theaters, and Montanini is one of those who paved the way.
The third concerns the Brancaccio: the theater hosting him was born in 1916 as Teatro Morgana, a variety hall, and saw Totò, Anna Magnani and Aldo Fabrizi pass through. Comedy has deep roots on that stage.
The right photo to take at Giorgio Montanini Live at Teatro Brancaccio, May 2, 2027
No photos during the show: the Brancaccio's rules forbid photographing and filming, even with a phone, and in stand-up the jokes are the comedian's capital. A sneaked video of a new monologue is the surest way to ruin the evening for the performer and for whoever's sitting next to you.
The right photo is taken beforehand, of the theater's facade on Via Merulana, with the show's name lit up. Cross the street and shoot from the opposite sidewalk with a wide lens, so you get the front of the theater and a stretch of the street, one of the longest and straightest in the center. Arriving a bit early, in May, you photograph the facade in the last light of the evening.
The second is taken in the foyer, in front of the official poster with the comedian's face. The third, on the way out, toward Piazza Vittorio: the Porta Alchemica, in the square's gardens, with its enigmatic inscriptions lit by the streetlights, is a fitting image to close an evening of satire.
Around the Brancaccio: Esquilino, Monti and Via Merulana
Teatro Brancaccio is on Via Merulana, between the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and that of San Giovanni in Laterano, in the Esquilino district.
Two basilicas and an ancient auditorium
Via Merulana links Santa Maria Maggiore and St. John Lateran. On the same street is Palazzo Merulana and, a little farther, the Auditorium of Maecenas, the Roman-era hall named after the patron of Horace and Virgil.
Palazzo Brancaccio
Next to the theater stands Palazzo Brancaccio, the residence of the family that gave the hall its name: the theater rises against the embankment of its gardens.
The Monti district
To the west you head down into the Monti district, with its sloping streets toward the Forums. To explore it before the show there's our page on the Monti district, and in May the walk can still be done in daylight, in the hours before the start.
Some important events that happened here in history
The history of Teatro Brancaccio begins in January 1916, when the hall opened under the name Teatro Morgana. It stands against the embankment of the gardens of the palace of the Field-Brancaccio, the noble family named after Isabella Field, who married Prince Brancaccio.
The decisive moment came in 1937, when the hall reopened in its current layout, with two foyers, a large orchestra and two balconies, and took the name Teatro Brancaccio. In 1985 it became home to the Rome Opera Foundation, which stayed until 2000: for 15 years Via Merulana hosted the capital's opera and ballet.
After the Opera came the City of Rome, which entrusted its direction to Gigi Proietti until 2007, followed by Maurizio Costanzo's management until 2010 and Stage Entertainment Italia's until 2012. Since September 2012 the artistic director has been Alessandro Longobardi, who has turned the theater into a cultural hub with the Brancaccino, the training area and the terrace. An evening of satire in a theater born for variety and run for years by two great showmen like Proietti and Costanzo fits this history.
Who has passed through Giorgio Montanini Live at Teatro Brancaccio, May 2, 2027
Some of the biggest names in entertainment have passed across the Brancaccio stage, as the theater itself recalls: Totò, Anna Magnani, Aldo Fabrizi and Gigi Proietti among actors, and Fabrizio De André, Louis Armstrong and Jimi Hendrix among musicians. Names that tell of a theater used to the popular phenomena of its time.
This season the Brancaccio hosts, among others, Mrs. Doubtfire the musical, Marco Travaglio with Cornuti e contenti, Filippo Caccamo and, a few days after Montanini, the concert by Francesco Renga on May 11. Satire in monologue form finds its place alongside musicals and singer-songwriters.
Montanini's career includes names from Italian drama, film and comedy: Franco Branciaroli, who directed him in Oedipus Rex, Filippo Giardina, Francesco De Carlo and the other writers of Satiriasi and Nemico pubblico, and Pietro Castellitto, Riccardo Milani, Edoardo Leo and Valerio Mastandrea on set. On May 2, 2027 a comedian who helped take stand-up from bars to big theaters comes to Via Merulana.
Accessibility at Teatro Brancaccio
Teatro Brancaccio states that there are no architectural barriers to reaching the orchestra: there's a ramp, a wheelchair area and an accessible restroom on the ground floor, reached from the foyer.
Wheelchairs and reduced mobility
The theater offers, while they last, orchestra seats for wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties. The balconies can't be reached by wheelchair, since there are no elevators. Seats are booked by writing to the box office with the required documentation.
Visual and hearing impairments
For spectators with visual and hearing impairments the theater reserves orchestra seats on request, while they last, and if you have a service dog you can ask the box office to bring the animal into the hall.
Which section to choose for Montanini
For a stand-up night at the Brancaccio the choice of section is between closeness and the overall view: published prices go from €35 for the Poltrona to €25 for the second balcony A.
The orchestra
The Poltronissima and Poltrona are the sections for those who want to see the comedian up close. In stand-up, with no sets or costumes, the face is the only visual element: sitting in the orchestra means missing nothing.
The balconies
The first balcony A, at €30, offers a good view of the stage and a sweep of the hall, and the second balcony A, at €25, is the cheapest option. The acoustics of a hall built for opera and musicals ensure the voice carries everywhere.
Where to eat before or after the show
Around the Brancaccio there are three options: the neighborhood bars and spots on Via Merulana, for a quick meal, multiethnic Esquilino around Piazza Vittorio, with cuisines from many countries at moderate prices, and the Monti district, a quarter of an hour on foot, with trattorias, osterias and wine bars.
Sunday evening
On Sunday evenings some places are closed and the May Day weekend is in high demand: book ahead, especially in Monti.
Before or after
With a 21:00 start, have dinner early, around 19:00, or after the show: in Monti several kitchens stay open late, and in early May you can eat outdoors.
Early May in Rome: the setting for the evening
Montanini's evening falls in one of the liveliest times of the Roman year, between the May Day weekend and the weeks of big tennis.
The long weekend
May 2, 2027 is the Sunday that closes the May Day weekend, with May 1 falling on a Saturday. If you're coming from out of town, it's a chance to pair an evening of satire with two days in the city, booking accommodation and train in good time.
Tennis and theater
In the same days the Internazionali BNL d'Italia 2027 are under way at Foro Italico, from April 27 to May 16. If you're in Rome for the tennis, you can end a day at Foro Italico with satire on Via Merulana, allowing time to cross the city: Metro A links the two areas.
A week of comedy
The first week of May 2027 is packed with comedy in Rome's theaters. At Teatro Olimpico Massimo Bagnato is on May 4 and 5, followed by Lillo e Greg from May 7 to 15, and on May 7 Edoardo Leo, who directed Montanini in Mia and Per te, is at Palazzo dello Sport with Ti racconto una storia. If you stay in town a few days you can build a little festival of laughter of your own, from Montanini's stand-up to more classic comic theater.
Planning your trip home
If you're heading home by public transit on Sunday night, check the time of the last metro in advance and keep in mind, as alternatives, the N10 night bus from the Labicana/Merulana stop or a taxi from the stands in Piazza Vittorio and Largo Brancaccio.
