Prices published by the theater range from €29 (side balcony with railing) to €48 (gold premium orchestra), plus a presale fee of €4.50 to €7 depending on the section, always charged when the ticket is issued. Language: performed in Italian. No English version or English surtitles are announced.
The theater calls it a revival after the success of past runs, and that's worth taking seriously: MOVIe ERCULeO returns to the same hall for more than a week, at the end of the season, when Roman audiences have already spent a lot. It can do so because in Rome Lillo e Greg are an institution: 30 years on stage, 20 on radio, and an audience ranging from 50-somethings who grew up with Le Iene to kids who know them from the movies. Our editors' verdict is clear: among the comedy shows of the Roman spring, this is the one least likely to disappoint.
MOVIe ERCULeO: what kind of show it is
MOVIe ERCULeO is Lillo e Greg's latest show: more than two hours of comedy in which the Roman duo stages a metatheatrical journey that turns the main movie genres upside down, from sword-and-sandal epics to horror, from science fiction to noir, from fantasy to surreal art, from cop films to musicals. That's how the official Teatro Olimpico page describes it, adding a detail in keeping with the show: the importance of product placement, presented as the subject of a master class.
The title
The title is written with alternating capitals and lowercase letters, MOVIe ERCULeO, and already says a lot: inside it is the English word movie, and there's Ercole, Hercules, meaning the peplum, the genre of costume films with muscle-bound heroes that Italian cinema churned out by the dozen. It's a comic artist's pun, and Lillo e Greg really were comic artists.
Theater within theater
Metatheatrical means the show is about itself: the actors stage the films and at the same time show the mechanisms by which those films are built. It's a structure Lillo e Greg have always used. Work in Regress, back in 2004, used theater within theater to laugh at the pettiness of a company of actors, and Gagmen, from 2018, was a tribute to silent film comedy. MOVIe ERCULeO widens the field to all genre cinema.
Running time
More than two hours, the theater writes. For a comedy that's a substantial length: keep it in mind when planning your evening, especially for the 21:00 Saturday shows, which end late.
The cast and team of MOVIe ERCULeO
MOVIe ERCULeO is written by Claudio Gregori and Pasquale Petrolo, that is Greg and Lillo, who also direct it with codirector Claudio Piccolotto. On stage with them are Carlotta Proietti, Vania Della Bidia, Marco Fiorini and Attilio Di Giovanni. Costumes are by Nicoletta Fattibene, music by Greg, Lillo and Attilio Di Giovanni, and it's produced by LSD Edizioni srl.
Attilio Di Giovanni, the longtime musician
Attilio Di Giovanni's name runs through the duo's whole history. With Greg he wrote the original music for Stracult and Cocktail d'amore, the theme and music for 610, the soundtracks of the films Colpi di fortuna, Un Natale stupefacente and Natale col boss, and those of almost all their stage comedies from the 2000s on. In 2009 he was at the piano in Greg's monologue, AgGregazioni. Seeing him on stage, not just in the score, is a sign of the show's musical nature.
Claudio Piccolotto
Claudio Piccolotto had already codirected Gagmen with Lillo e Greg, the show the duo toured from 2018 to 2022. MOVIe ERCULeO thus comes from the same team, with the same idea: comedy as a precision mechanism, made of timing, sound effects, music and costumes.
LSD Edizioni
The production company's initials, LSD, recall Latte e i Suoi Derivati, "Milk and Its Derivatives", the comedy music group Lillo e Greg started after the publishing house they worked for went bankrupt. Normalman, Lillo's superhero, was born in 1993 in the comic magazine LSD, Latte e i Suoi Derivati.
Dates and times of Lillo e Greg at Teatro Olimpico
MOVIe ERCULeO is on at Teatro Olimpico for eight performances between May 7 and 15, 2027, with Monday, May 10 off. Times, published by the theater's official box office, vary by day.
The calendar
Friday, May 7 at 20:30. Saturday, May 8 at 21:00. Sunday, May 9 at 16:00, the only matinee. Tuesday the 11th, Wednesday the 12th, Thursday the 13th and Friday, May 14 at 20:30. Saturday, May 15 at 21:00, the last performance.
Which performance to choose
Sunday afternoon is the right choice if you're coming with kids or from outside Rome and want to get home at a reasonable hour. The 20:30 weeknight shows are usually the calmest if you're after center seats. Saturday at 21:00, with a good two hours of show, means getting out around 23:15: perfect if you want to eat afterward.
Tickets and prices for MOVIe ERCULeO
The prices for MOVIe ERCULeO published by Teatro Olimpico are: gold premium orchestra €48 plus €7 presale fee, side premium orchestra €43 plus €6.50, orchestra and balcony €38 plus €5.70, balcony with railing €36 plus €5.40, side balcony €31 plus €4.70, and side balcony with railing €29 plus €4.50. The theater specifies that the presale fee is always charged when the ticket is issued.
Where to buy
Tickets are sold from the show's page on the theater's official website, which links to the Olimpico's online box office, or at the box office on Piazza Gentile da Fabriano. For information the theater gives the address biglietti@teatroolimpico.it. Avoid secondary markets: for a show with eight performances there's no reason to pay more.
Where to sit
For a comedy made of facial expressions, costumes and comic timing, distance matters. The gold premium orchestra is for those who want to see faces up close, while the orchestra and center balcony, at the same price, offer an overall front view, useful in a show with scene changes and musical numbers. The sections with railings cost less: you hear everything, you see a bit less.
Who Lillo e Greg are
Lillo e Greg are a Roman comedy duo made up of Pasquale "Lillo" Petrolo and Claudio "Greg" Gregori, formed in the late 1980s in the editorial office of a comic book publisher. The two met working for ACME in Rome, where they wrote comedy comics: Lillo made Zio Tibia with Michelangelo La Neve, while Greg handled Sergio and I Sottotitolati.
From comics to music
When the publisher went bankrupt in 1991, the two and the whole editorial team found themselves out of work. Their answer was a comedy music group, Latte e i Suoi Derivati. Greg is also a musician with a long history: in 1982 he founded the Jolly Rockers with classmate Max Forestieri, a rock and roll and doo wop band that took part in Sanremo Giovani in 1993, and in 1997 he formed the Blues Willies. In 2017 Lillo created his own rock band, Lillo e i Vagabondi.
The comic book characters
Greg is the creator of Sergio, an anthropomorphic monitor lizard who works as a private detective, and of I Sottotitolati, a parody of Roman toughs with their dialogue translated into lofty Italian. Lillo created Stinco e Laido, two crooks, Topo Martino and above all Normalman, the superhero without superpowers, who later became a radio and TV character and, since 2011, the star of comic books drawn by Luca Usai.
Lillo e Greg on television and radio
Lillo e Greg were part of the founding team of Le Iene on Italia 1, where they stayed three years, and since 2003 they have written and hosted 610, Sei Uno Zero, on Rai Radio 2. These are the two experiences that made them popular with different generations.
Television
After Le Iene came Telenauta '69 in 2000, a black and white tribute to 1960s TV, Serena Dandini and Corrado Guzzanti's L'ottavo nano in 2001, Mmmhh! with Neri Marcorè in 2002, then Stracult, B.R.A. Braccia rubate all'agricoltura, Bla Bla Bla, Parla con me and The show must go off. For years they provided commentary for the Italian versions of Takeshi's Castle and Wipeout. On June 14, 2013 they hosted the David di Donatello awards ceremony on Rai 1. In 2023 came the Lillo e Greg Comedy Show on Prime Video.
610, the radio show
610 started in 2003 and was an immediate hit: in 2006 it became a daily show, and in 2004 it won the Premio Flaiano for radio. The music is by Greg and Attilio Di Giovanni. The show celebrated its 10th anniversary at Auditorium Conciliazione on May 17, 2013 and its 20th with a show at Auditorium Parco della Musica in December 2023. Many characters born on radio, from Normalman to L'Uomo che non capiva troppo, later moved to TV and the stage.
Lillo e Greg in the movies
On screen Lillo e Greg starred in the Christmas comedies Colpi di fulmine, Colpi di fortuna, Un Natale stupefacente, Natale col boss and Natale a Londra, and since 2020 they have also directed their own films, D.N.A. Decisamente non adatti and Gli idoli delle donne. Colpi di fulmine and Colpi di fortuna received the Biglietto d'oro box office award.
Separate careers
Lillo has also built a solo career: Corrado Guzzanti's Fascisti su Marte, Massimiliano Bruno's Nessuno mi può giudicare, Sergio Rubini's Mi rifaccio vivo, Paolo Sorrentino's The Great Beauty, for which he received a special Nastro d'argento in 2014, and in 2023 Sono Lillo. Greg starred in Marco Risi's Tre mogli in 2001.
The duo's awards
Besides the Flaiano for 610, the duo received the Premio Satira Politica in Forte dei Marmi in 2004, the Premio Cariddi for comedy at the Taormina Film Fest and the Premio Nino Manfredi for humor and surreal comedy in 2015, and the Premio Scarnicci e Tarabusi in 2016.
A curious fact about MOVIe ERCULeO by Lillo e Greg at Teatro Olimpico in Rome, May 7 to 15, 2027
Il mistero dell'assassino misterioso, the comedy Lillo e Greg wrote and performed in 2000 at Ambra Jovinelli, was staged in Spain in June 2009 by a Catalan company. It's proof, fairly rare for Italian comedy, that their mechanisms work even outside the language they were born in.
It makes sense when you look at how they work. Lillo e Greg's comedy doesn't rely on dialect or political current events but on genre parody: the whodunit in L'assassino misterioso, the spy movie in L'uomo che non capiva troppo, the western in Far West Story, horror in La baita degli spettri, rock history in the Jolly Rockers, silent film in Gagmen. These are genres everyone knows, in Rome as in Barcelona, and the laughs come from breaking their rules.
MOVIe ERCULeO takes this method to the max: instead of one genre, it lines them all up, from the peplum to the musical. For the audience it's a guarantee, because anyone who has seen a few movies will recognize the targets. For the duo it's a risk, because parodying everything can become parodying nothing. Lillo e Greg have the craft to avoid it, and the return to the Olimpico after past runs confirms it. There's also a thread linking the curious fact to the hall: the Olimpico started as a movie theater, and a show that takes cinema apart on the stage of a former cinema has a logic of its own.
Lillo e Greg on stage: 30 years of Roman comedies
Lillo e Greg made their stage debut in the winter of 1994/1995 at Teatro Vittoria in Rome, invited by then director Attilio Corsini, with the musical comedy 5740170, 06 per chi chiama da fuori Roma. Since then theater has been the center of their work, and Rome their main stage.
The 1990s and 2000s
In 1996 came Gli squallidi, a tribute to Dino Risi's I mostri, in 1997 20 Quarantino, a satire of the Sanremo Festival, and in 1999 the Lillo e Greg Show. In 2000 Il mistero dell'assassino misterioso at Ambra Jovinelli, which ran for three years all over Italy and was revived in 2023. Then Work in Regress in 2004, The Blues Brothers, il plagio in 2005, La baita degli spettri in 2006, with Virginia Raffaele in the cast, Sketch and Soda, Far West Story in 2009 and Intrappolati nella commedia in 2010.
Back at the Olimpico
Their relationship with Teatro Olimpico goes back a long way. From November 29 to December 5, 2010 Greg brought La Dolce Diva, Burlesque Show here, in December 2011 the duo debuted at the Olimpico with L'uomo che non capiva troppo, and from January to March 2015 they starred in La fantastica avventura di Mr. Starr. Then came Marchette in trincea, Best Of, L'uomo che non capiva troppo Reloaded and Gagmen. MOVIe ERCULeO, listed among their 2025 shows, now returns to the same hall.
Teatro Olimpico: from 1930s movie house to home of comedy
Teatro Olimpico on Piazza Gentile da Fabriano has been active as Cine-Teatro Olimpico since 1936 and as Teatro Olimpico since 1981. It stands on Lungotevere Flaminio, by the Ponte della Musica, and hosts most of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana's performances.
Construction and the cinema years
The block was built in 1935 and 1936 for the Società Generale Immobiliare, in the years when the Flaminio neighborhood and Foro Italico were taking shape. Until the 1950s the hall worked mainly as a cinema, and between screenings variety artists performed: a large movie house with the facilities of a theater.
1980, the citizens' theater
After World War II the Accademia Filarmonica Romana rented the hall for its season. When the building was put up for sale in the late 1970s, Adriana Panni, the Accademia's president, launched a subscription and brought many citizens together in Teatro Olimpico spa, which bought the building in 1980. Since 1981 the program has opened up to drama, dance and big-name comedy.
The hall
The hall has 1,410 seats: 966 in the orchestra, arranged in a sloping amphitheater, and 444 in the horseshoe gallery, which corresponds to the balcony sections at the box office. The stage is about 10 meters deep and 12 wide. For a show with scene changes and live music like MOVIe ERCULeO it's a fitting space, and the sloping orchestra means that even from the back rows you can see over the heads of those in front.
Something nobody tells you about MOVIe ERCULeO by Lillo e Greg at Teatro Olimpico in Rome, May 7 to 15, 2027
The foyer and corridors of Teatro Olimpico hold stage sets made by great 20th-century artists for shows performed right there, and almost nobody in the audience notices them. People walk past ticket in hand, looking for their row, without knowing what's next to them.
There are the gilded forms Corrado Cagli made for Igor Stravinsky's Mass, performed at the Olimpico in October 1975. There's the backdrop Giacomo Manzù painted for Stravinsky's Histoire du soldat, staged in October 1966. There's Mirko's sculpture for Chordination, from Niccolò Castiglioni's Tre misteri, from 1968, and Alfred Silbermann's set for another performance of the Mass, in 2001.
If you're going to see Lillo e Greg, the detail has a special flavor. MOVIe ERCULeO is a show that plays with sets, with the painted backdrops of sword-and-sandal films and the cardboard cutouts of genre movies, and in the foyer there are real sets, by sculptors and painters, made to last a few nights and still there. Arrive 20 minutes early and take a look around before you sit down: few halls in Rome keep a Manzù and a Cagli in the hallway, and nobody points them out.
My tip for MOVIe ERCULeO by Lillo e Greg at Teatro Olimpico in Rome, May 7 to 15, 2027
My tip for MOVIe ERCULeO is to choose a 20:30 weeknight performance, buy a seat in the orchestra or center balcony and get to Flaminio by metro and tram, leaving the car at home. Three simple choices that change the quality of the evening.
At the Tuesday to Thursday performances it's usually easier to find a center seat. Orchestra and balcony cost the same, €38 plus presale fee, and offer the best value for a show where the whole stage matters, not just the faces. The gold premium orchestra makes sense if you want to see Lillo's facial expressions up close, which are half his comedy.
On transport I'm firm: on show nights parking around Piazza Gentile da Fabriano is the real problem. Metro A to Flaminio and tram 2 to Piazza Mancini are the easiest option. In May, with the long days, you can also walk from Piazza del Popolo along the Tiber: a stroll that sets you up well for two hours of laughs.
One last thing: MOVIe ERCULeO runs more than two hours. Eat beforehand or book for after, but don't count on a sandwich at intermission as dinner.
How to get to Teatro Olimpico for Lillo e Greg
Teatro Olimpico is reached by Metro A to Flaminio and then tram 2 to Piazza Mancini terminus, from where it's about 500 meters on foot along Viale del Pinturicchio. These are the directions the theater itself gives.
Metro A and tram 2
From Flaminio station on line A take tram 2 to Piazza Mancini terminus, then walk along Viale del Pinturicchio to Piazza Gentile da Fabriano: five minutes on foot. If you arrive on the Roma Viterbo railway, get off at Flaminio and follow the same route.
Bus
The lines with stops near the theater listed by the Olimpico are 220, 232, 233, 280, 301, 446, 48, 910 and 911, plus tram 2. The 910 leaves from Termini toward Mancini: get off at the Pannini stop and walk about 300 meters along Viale del Pinturicchio. Lines 200, 201, 53 and the night bus n24 also reach Piazza Mancini terminus. For the day's times, use the ATAC journey planner.
By car
From the center take Viale del Muro Torto toward Piazzale Flaminio, then Via Luisa di Savoia, Lungotevere Arnaldo da Brescia and Lungotevere delle Navi to Lungotevere Flaminio. From the north you arrive from Foro Italico across Ponte Duca d'Aosta. Parking on show nights is hard: leave early.
Another well-known fact, yet one rarely mentioned
It's well known that Lillo e Greg are comedians. Much less mentioned is that Greg is first and foremost a musician, active since 1978, founder of the Jolly Rockers in 1982 and the Blues Willies in 1997, and that almost all the music in their shows bears his name. MOVIe ERCULeO is no exception: the music is by Greg, Lillo and Attilio Di Giovanni.
Greg's first concert, according to his bio, was a very short blues in the gym of Liceo classico Tacito in Rome, in 1978. A long series of bands followed: rock and roll, rockabilly, doo wop, swing, country. The Jolly Rockers, founded with classmate Max Forestieri, released the LP Suzuky Boogie in 1992 and took part in Sanremo Giovani in 1993. In 2012 Greg revived the band for the stage show Chi erano i Jolly Rockers?, a mock documentary on the rise and fall of a rock group.
Lillo plays too: in 2017 he founded Lillo e i Vagabondi, in which he sings and plays guitar. And in February 2011 the two took the Ariston stage together with Max Pezzali, as crooners, for a swing version of Il mio secondo tempo. It matters if you're going to the Olimpico: in a show that also parodies the musical, music isn't a side dish but one of the main comic weapons. If you only know the Lillo of Sono Lillo or the Christmas movies, you'll discover a duo that on stage is also, to all intents and purposes, a small band.
The right photo to take at MOVIe ERCULeO by Lillo e Greg at Teatro Olimpico in Rome, May 7 to 15, 2027
The right photo, if you're going to see Lillo e Greg at the Olimpico, is taken from the Ponte della Musica, opposite Piazza Gentile da Fabriano, with the Tiber below and the long light of May evenings. The theater itself mentions the bridge as part of the cultural hub Flaminio has become, along with the Auditorium and MAXXI.
In May, for the 20:30 shows, you arrive while it's still light: the ideal moment is the half hour before going in, with the sky turning color to the west. From the bridge the frame is double: on one side the theater's rationalist facade, with its travertine base, on the other the Foro Italico bank. It's a photo that tells where you've been better than a selfie in front of the poster.
The second photo is of the lit facade with its sign and the audience waiting on the sidewalk, taken from the opposite side of the square to get the whole building. The third, inside, is of the foyer and the historic sets, before the orchestra doors open.
During the show, no photos and no video. In a comedy built on comic timing, a phone's glow ruins the joke for those sitting around you, and the actors see it. The MOVIe ERCULeO poster, which the theater uses as the show's image, is keepsake enough.
Some important events that happened here in history
On March 4, 1965 Pierre Boulez conducted a concert at Teatro Olimpico with the Italian premiere of Igor Stravinsky's Abraham and Isaac and the European premiere of his Elegy for J.F.K. It's perhaps the most important date in the hall's musical history, and it shows the weight the Accademia Filarmonica Romana carried in the city's cultural life.
In the following years the Olimpico hosted productions where art and music met: Stravinsky's Histoire du soldat in October 1966 with Manzù's backdrop, Castiglioni's Tre misteri in 1968 with Mirko's sculpture, and Stravinsky's Mass in 1975 with Cagli's gilded forms.
1980 is the turning point: Teatro Olimpico spa is founded and buys the building. From 1981 dance became a regular part of the program: Moses Pendleton's Momix debuted at the Olimpico in April 1982 and became regular guests, and the Lindsay Kemp Company came in 1989 and 1993. In the 1990s came Mikhail Baryshnikov with the White Oak Dance Project in October 1995 and the Bolshoi Ballet in September 1996. In the 2009/2010 season the Agis rankings placed the Olimpico second in Rome and seventh in Italy for attendance.
For comedy, the event that counts is May 1996, when Gigi Proietti brought A me gli occhi here. Since then the Olimpico has been one of the homes of Roman comedy, and Lillo e Greg's runs, from 2010 to today, are part of that story.
Who has passed through MOVIe ERCULeO by Lillo e Greg at Teatro Olimpico in Rome, May 7 to 15, 2027
The Teatro Olimpico stage has welcomed musicians like Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Jessye Norman, Zubin Mehta and Giuseppe Sinopoli, and comedians like Gigi Proietti, Enrico Brignano, Vincenzo Salemme and Lillo e Greg themselves. The theater lists them among the stars of its history, alongside Dario Fo and Nicola Piovani.
For pop music, the theater's memory holds Marillion in February 1988, Lucio Dalla with Henna in April 1994, Pooh with Musica dentro in October of the same year, and Giorgio Gaber on January 28, 1998. Dance brought Baryshnikov, Joaquín Cortés, Lindsay Kemp, Maurice Béjart, the Bolshoi, Antonio Gades and Momix. Comedy, besides Proietti, Brignano and Salemme, brought Aldo, Giovanni e Giacomo, Neri Marcorè, Ale e Franz, Gioele Dix, Cinzia Leone, Max Giusti and Maurizio Battista.
Lillo e Greg hold a special place on this list: they're among the few who have premiered new comedies at the Olimpico, from L'uomo che non capiva troppo in 2011 to La fantastica avventura di Mr. Starr in 2015. In the same 2026/2027 season comedians like Angelo Pintus pass through the hall, and in May it's their turn.
Then there are the names who have crossed the duo's career: Serena Dandini and Corrado Guzzanti, with whom they worked on television, Neri Marcorè, their partner in Mmmhh!, Virginia Raffaele and Paola Minaccioni, in the casts of their 2000s comedies, and Max Paiella, in the Jolly Rockers and Blues Willies. None of them is announced for MOVIe ERCULeO: on stage, according to the theater, are Lillo e Greg with Carlotta Proietti, Vania Della Bidia, Marco Fiorini and Attilio Di Giovanni.
Flaminio around Teatro Olimpico
Teatro Olimpico is in the Flaminio neighborhood, north of Piazza del Popolo, in an area that over the last 20 years has become one of Rome's cultural hubs. In May, with the long days, arrive early and explore it on foot.
Ponte della Musica and Foro Italico
Opposite the theater, the Ponte della Musica leads to the other bank of the Tiber, where Foro Italico opens up, built in the same years as the theater and in the same architectural language.
Auditorium and MAXXI
A short distance away are the Auditorium Parco della Musica and MAXXI. An exhibition in the afternoon and Lillo e Greg in the evening is a sensible plan if you're coming from out of town.
Ponte Milvio and Piazza del Popolo
Heading up the Tiber you reach Milvian Bridge, with its square full of bars, the natural destination after the theater. In the opposite direction, along Via Flaminia, you come to Villa Giulia and then Piazza del Popolo.
Where to eat before or after MOVIe ERCULeO
Around Teatro Olimpico, between Piazza Mancini, Via Flaminia and Piazza Gentile da Fabriano, there are pizzerias, trattorias and bars frequented by theater and Auditorium audiences. It's a neighborhood selection, wide-ranging and not aimed at tourists.
Before the show
For the 20:30 shows, a quick dinner at 19:00 is the most practical option. For the Saturday 21:00 shows there's a bit more leeway. With a show of more than two hours, arriving at the theater hungry is a mistake.
After the show
On Saturday you come out around 23:15, and Ponte Milvio, a few minutes away by taxi, has places open late. On Sunday, with the 16:00 show, you're out in the late afternoon: perfect timing for an unhurried trattoria dinner.
Accessibility and kids at MOVIe ERCULeO
If you have reduced mobility and want to see MOVIe ERCULeO, contact the Teatro Olimpico box office before buying, at biglietti@teatroolimpico.it. It's the surest way to learn about suitable seats and the conditions for companions. The orchestra slopes and the gallery is on the upper floor: things to consider when choosing a section.
With kids and teens
Lillo e Greg have a cross-generational audience, and the parody of movie genres also speaks to young people who know the films. The running time of more than two hours is demanding for little ones: the Sunday, May 9 performance at 16:00 suits families best. The theater doesn't give a recommended age, and if in doubt, an email to the box office will clear it up.
