Dario Fo and Franca Rame's most-staged text, in the hands of the actress who in recent years has made it her own to the point of making a film of it, in a theater where Fo is at home. Coppia aperta quasi spalancata is more than 40 years old and doesn't show a single year of it: it is about a husband who demands freedom and a wife who, when she takes it, throws him into crisis. The verdict is clear-cut: it is the comedy to recommend to anyone who thinks Italian comic theater is made only of one-liners.

The season

It comes two days after Io Marte Tu Mercole by Scintilla and Federica Camba, another show about the couple, and is followed by PanPers with Terapia di coppia: a week in March in which Olimpico seems to have decided to put marriage on the couch.
Coppia aperta quasi spalancata: the plot
Coppia aperta quasi spalancata tells of Antonia, a betrayed wife who, in order to stay next to her husband, accepts the unthinkable: the open couple. Only when a new man, young and intelligent, enters her life does the husband notice her.
Antonia
Teatro Olimpico presents Antonia as the perfect heroine of all betrayed wives, who tells with irony their survival within the domestic walls. The husband is a supporter of the open couple, as long as it is open on one side only, his. Antonia first suffers, then realizes she is still young and ready for a new life.
The reversal
The twist is simple and perfect. When Antonia begins a relationship with another man, a physicist whom the original text makes a Nobel candidate, the husband becomes jealous and demands that the affair end. The freedom he preached for himself he cannot stand for her. It is the mechanism of classic comedy, reversed with surgical precision.
Dialogues and monologues
The show alternates brilliant dialogues and monologues, in which the most absurd episodes of couple life unfold. The theater's presentation defines it as a tragicomic fable, which tells in amusing and at the same time dramatic tones the differences between male and female psychology. Everyone, the theater writes, recognizes themselves in it.
The first line
The text opens with a rule about the open couple and about drafts that has become proverbial in Italian theater: it is the line with which Teatro Olimpico presents the show, and it sums up in one line the hypocrisy that the comedy dismantles for an hour and a half.
The text by Dario Fo and Franca Rame
Coppia aperta, quasi spalancata is a comedy by Dario Fo and Franca Rame composed in 1983 and first performed in December of that year at Teatro Ciak in Milan, with three characters: Antonia, the husband and the lover.
Whose text it is
The text is signed by the couple, but according to what Dario Fo himself said at Franca Rame's funeral, it was written by her: the subject was entirely hers, and his intervention came only in the final phase of the drafting. It is a detail that changes the reading of the comedy: the story of a wife who takes back her own life was written by a woman, and what a woman.
700 productions
On that same occasion Fo said that Coppia aperta was the most staged work by the couple, with about 700 productions in the world. Teatro Olimpico recalls the success in Germany, where the comedy was reportedly put on in 30 theaters at the same time. In the 1980s, in Italy, it was one of the most popular shows.
The television version
In 1987 a television production was made with the support of Swiss Italian-language television, with Franca Rame in the role of Antonia and Giorgio Biavati as co-lead. It is the recording that many enthusiasts know, and the inevitable term of comparison for every new Antonia.
Why it is still current
The theater's presentation says that the comedy stages the relative intolerance of the concept of monogamy. Four decades later, between dating apps and declared non-exclusive relationships, the theme is more current than it was then. But the strength of the text is not the theme: it is the reversal, the rule that holds for one and not for the other. That doesn't age.

In 2022 she brought to the Napoli Teatro Festival the monologue Una ragazza come Io. Since 2019 she has been Antonia in Coppia aperta quasi spalancata.
Chiara Francini and Coppia aperta: a long story
Chiara Francini has played Antonia in Coppia aperta quasi spalancata since the 2019 season, next to Alessandro Federico, and in 2024 she made a film from it, produced, written and starred in by her, which opened the Giornate degli Autori at the Venice Film Festival.
Theater since 2019
The show debuted in the 2019 season and toured Italian theaters for years with success with audiences and critics. Aldo Cazzullo wrote about it with words of great esteem for the actress. In 2024 Francini is still bringing it on stage, alongside her monologue Forte e Chiara: two shows about women, one written by Franca Rame, the other by her.
The film
In June 2023 Francini founded with three partners the production company Nemesis. The first film is precisely Coppia aperta quasi spalancata, directed by Federica Di Giacomo, produced, written and starred in by Francini. On August 28, 2024 it opened the Giornate degli Autori in Venice. The next day it was released in theaters, distributed by I Wonder Pictures.
Alessandro Federico
Alessandro Federico has been Francini's stage partner in this comedy since the debut. The partnership goes beyond Coppia aperta: he is the director of Forte e Chiara, the show that Francini drew from her book and which debuted on October 13, 2023 at Teatro Rossini in Pesaro. A long-standing artistic couple, which on stage plays a couple falling apart: it is the paradox that makes their duet credible.
Teatro Olimpico, home of Coppia aperta quasi spalancata
Teatro Olimpico on Piazza Gentile da Fabriano has been active as a movie theater since 1936 and as a theater since 1981, and has 1,410 seats, 966 in the stalls and 444 in the gallery. The venue page is Teatro Olimpico.
From cinema to theater
The building was constructed between 1935 and 1936 for the Società Generale Immobiliare, in the years when Flaminio and Foro Italico were taking shape. Until the 1950s it functioned mostly as a cinema, with variety acts in the intervals: a big cinema with the services of a theater.
The amphitheater-style stalls
The 966 stalls seats are on a slope, amphitheater-style: anyone sitting in the back rows sees over the heads of those in front. For a comedy for two voices, with many monologues addressed to the audience, it is a clear advantage. The gallery, which at the box office corresponds to the balconata, is horseshoe-shaped. The stage measures about 10 meters deep by 12 wide.
The architecture
The building is reinforced concrete, with travertine in the base and the frames, restored to its original look by a recent restoration. Inside there is a rotunda foyer and wide corridors. The theater reports a judgment attributed to Orson Welles, according to which Olimpico would be the only place in Rome able to recall the atmosphere of Broadway theaters.
Where to sit for Coppia aperta quasi spalancata
For Coppia aperta the best seats are in the center stalls: in a comedy built on Antonia's monologues addressed to the audience, seeing the actress's face is half the show.
Poltrona or balconata
Poltrona and balconata cost the same, €28 plus €4.20 presale fee. Better the poltrona: the slope of the stalls guarantees a good view even from the back rows, and the voice arrives without the distance of the gallery.
Poltronissima gold
At €35 plus €5 presale fee it is the closest section. For a word-driven play the difference from the poltrona is felt less than for a dance show: it's worth the expense only for those who want to be a few meters from Francini.
The budget sections
The side balconata and railing balconata sections, from €21 to €26, suit those who want to spend little. For a large group they are the most reasonable choice.
How to get to Teatro Olimpico for Chiara Francini
Teatro Olimpico is reached by metro A to Flaminio and tram 2 to the terminus at Piazza Mancini, from which it is about 500 meters on foot: it is the route indicated by the theater.
Metro A and tram 2
From Flaminio station you take tram 2 to Piazza Mancini, then walk along Viale del Pinturicchio to Piazza Gentile da Fabriano, five minutes on foot. From Termini the scheme is the same: metro A, change at Flaminio.
Bus
The lines stopping near the theater are 220, 232, 233, 280, 301, 446, 48, 910 and 911. The 910 leaves from Termini: you get off at the Pannini stop and walk about 300 meters. Lines 200, 201, 53 and the night line n24 also arrive at Piazza Mancini.
By car
From the center you take Viale del Muro Torto toward Piazzale Flaminio and then the Lungotevere. From the north you cross Ponte Duca d'Aosta. On Friday and Saturday evenings Flaminio is crowded, also because of the Auditorium concerts: for the evening shows leave early or take the tram. Sunday afternoon is the easiest performance for those arriving by car.
A curiosity about Coppia aperta quasi spalancata with Chiara Francini at Teatro Olimpico, March 12 to 14, 2027
The most interesting curiosity concerns the paternity of the text, or rather the maternity. Coppia aperta, quasi spalancata bears the signature of Dario Fo and Franca Rame, but Fo himself, speaking at his wife's funeral, said that she had written it: the subject was entirely Franca's, and he had intervened only at the end. A comedy that for 40 years was attributed first of all to a Nobel laureate was, in substance, a woman's. It is the same story the text tells: a woman whom her husband takes for granted, and who proves stronger than him.
The second curiosity concerns the numbers. According to Fo, Coppia aperta is the most staged work by the couple in the world, with about 700 productions. Teatro Olimpico recalls that in Germany it was put on in 30 theaters at the same time. For a text born in a Milan theater in December 1983, with only three characters, it is an extraordinary spread.
The third concerns Chiara Francini. Few Italian actors have taken the same role from the stage to the cinema while producing the film in person. Francini did it with Antonia, founding a production company for the purpose: the film was chosen to open the Giornate degli Autori in Venice in 2024. Anyone who sees the show at Olimpico therefore sees the original from which the film was born.
A thing nobody tells you about Coppia aperta quasi spalancata with Chiara Francini at Teatro Olimpico, March 12 to 14, 2027
What almost nobody says is that Coppia aperta is not a light comedy. There is a lot of laughter, and from the start. But the original plot goes through a dark moment, in which Antonia comes to think of ending it all, before picking herself up. The theater itself calls it a tragicomic fable. Anyone expecting only an evening of jokes will find something more: a comedy with a bitter undertone, which is the reason why, after 40 years, it is still performed.
The second thing concerns the audience. A comedy about the open couple, seen as a couple, produces curious effects in the hall: her laughter at one point, his laughter at another, awkward silences at the wrong moments. It is one of the shows where watching the stalls is worth almost as much as watching the stage. If you go as a couple, get ready to discuss it on the way home.
The third is practical: the Sunday performance at 17:30 is the most requested by groups and by audiences coming from outside Rome. If you want to choose your seat, buy early, especially for Sunday.
The advice I give you for seeing Coppia aperta quasi spalancata with Chiara Francini at Teatro Olimpico, March 12 to 14, 2027
Choose Sunday afternoon and make a day of it. At 17:30 the show begins with light still in the mid-March sky: before it there is time for a walk to Ponte della Musica or to MAXXI, a few minutes on foot away, afterward for an early dinner at Ponte Milvio. It is the most pleasant way to experience Flaminio, and you get home at a reasonable hour for Monday.
Second piece of advice: take the poltrona, not the poltronissima. At €28 plus €4.20 presale fee, the poltrona offers, thanks to the slope of the stalls, a clean view even from the back rows, and costs €7.80 less than the poltronissima gold with the presale fee included. With the online commission, a poltrona ticket costs €33.70 in all.
Third: if you have never seen it, don't look for the 1987 television version with Franca Rame before the show. Watch it afterward. The comparison between two such different Antonias, the sharp one of Rame and the explosive one of Francini, is one of the most refined pleasures that Italian theater can offer.
Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned
Teatro Olimpico does not belong to a public body or to a large group: it belongs to a joint-stock company born in 1980 from a subscription of citizens. Many people in Rome know it, but it is rarely recalled.
At the end of the 1970s the hall risked disappearing. The owning company and the film body that managed it had gone bankrupt, and the building was for sale. Adriana Panni, president of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, promoted a fundraising among professionals, entrepreneurs, intellectuals and enthusiasts. Teatro Olimpico spa was born, and in 1980 bought the building from the Società Generale Immobiliare. Panni was its president until 1994.
There is a coincidence of dates worth noting. Teatro Olimpico spa was born in 1980 and opened as a theater in 1981. Coppia aperta, quasi spalancata was born in 1983. The theater and the comedy are contemporaries, children of the same season of Italian theater, the one in which the stage opened to a wider audience without losing ambition. Among the protagonists of Olimpico's history, the theater cites precisely Dario Fo: bringing a text of his here means bringing it back to a house that knows him.
The right photo to take at Coppia aperta quasi spalancata with Chiara Francini at Teatro Olimpico, March 12 to 14, 2027
The right photo is taken in Piazza Gentile da Fabriano, with the facade of Olimpico and the poster of Coppia aperta. For the Sunday afternoon performance the light is that of a March sunset: if you arrive around 17:00, the travertine facade takes on a warm color that it doesn't have in the evening.
For a show titled Coppia aperta, quasi spalancata, there is then a photo that makes you smile: the theater door wide open, with the two of you in front. It is a simple game, but it tells the title better than any image of the stage, and whoever receives it understands right away where you have been.
A third shot is taken from the Ponte della Musica, a few steps away: the Tiber, the Lungotevere Flaminio on one side and Foro Italico on the other. During the show the phone stays off: Coppia aperta lives on precise comic timing, and a lit display in the stalls breaks it for everyone.
Some important events that happened here in history
On March 4, 1965 Pierre Boulez conducted at Teatro Olimpico a concert with the Italian premiere of Abraham and Isaac by Igor Stravinsky and the European premiere of his Elegy for Kennedy. It is perhaps the most important date in the hall's musical history, and it says what weight the Accademia Filarmonica Romana had in the cultural life of those years.
In the following years Olimpico hosted stagings in which art and music met: L'Histoire du soldat by Stravinsky in October 1966, with the backdrop by Giacomo Manzù, Niccolò Castiglioni's Tre misteri in 1968, with Mirko's sculpture, and Stravinsky's Mass in 1975, with Corrado Cagli's golden forms.
The year 1980 was the turning point: Teatro Olimpico spa was born and bought the building, and from 1981 the hall changed name and vocation. Moses Pendleton's Momix debuted at Olimpico in April 1982 and became regular guests. Mikhail Baryshnikov arrived with the White Oak Dance Project in 1995, the Bolshoi Ballet in 1996. In May 1996 Gigi Proietti brought A me gli occhi here. In this history spoken theater has had a place alongside dance and music: Dario Fo is among the names the theater lists among the protagonists of its life, and Coppia aperta, 40 years later, brings his writing, and Franca Rame's, back to the same stage.
Who has passed through Coppia aperta quasi spalancata with Chiara Francini at Teatro Olimpico, March 12 to 14, 2027
On the stage of Teatro Olimpico have passed musicians such as Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Jessye Norman, Zubin Mehta, Giuseppe Sinopoli and Pierre Boulez, tied to the season of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, the dance of Baryshnikov, Joaquín Cortés, Lindsay Kemp, Maurice Béjart, of the Bolshoi and of Momix, and the songs of Lucio Dalla, the Pooh and Giorgio Gaber. Among the protagonists of its history the theater cites Dario Fo and Nicola Piovani.
Comedy and light theater have a long tradition here: Gigi Proietti, Enrico Brignano, Vincenzo Salemme, Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo, Neri Marcorè, Ale e Franz, Gioele Dix, Cinzia Leone, Lillo e Greg, Max Giusti, Maurizio Battista, who in the 2026/2027 season returns with Se non vinco... imparo. In the same season Olimpico hosts Angelo Pintus with Loro non sanno niente and Momix with Botanica.
Chiara Francini has an old tie with Rome: at the start of her career she acted for two consecutive years at Ambra Jovinelli, in Faccia da comico with Serena Dandini as artistic director. Two decades later she returns to a Roman hall of nearly 1,500 seats with Fo and Rame's most popular text. In the list of Olimpico's protagonists actresses are few: Antonia, the wife who takes back her life, is a good way to change the statistic.
Flaminio around Teatro Olimpico
Teatro Olimpico is in the Flaminio neighborhood, at the level of Ponte della Musica, in an area that also hosts Auditorium Parco della Musica and MAXXI.
Foro Italico
Across the bridge, on the other bank, is Foro Italico, built in the same years as Olimpico.
Milvian Bridge
Going up the river you reach Milvian Bridge, with the square full of bars: on Friday and Saturday night it is crowded, on Sunday it is quieter.
Toward the center
Along Via Flaminia you reach the edges of Villa Borghese and then Piazza del Popolo.
Where to eat before or after Coppia aperta
Around Teatro Olimpico, between Piazza Mancini, Via Flaminia and Piazza Gentile da Fabriano, there are pizzerias, trattorias and bars frequented by the theater and Auditorium audiences. For the Friday and Saturday evening performances, starting at 20:30, the most practical solution is a quick dinner around 19:00, or an aperitivo before and dinner after at Ponte Milvio, which on weekends stays open late. For Sunday at 17:30 the scheme reverses: long lunch, show, and an early dinner around 20:00 in Flaminio. On weekends always book: with Olimpico's audience and the Auditorium concerts, the tables in the area are taken early.
Accessibility at Teatro Olimpico
Anyone with reduced mobility needs who wants to see Coppia aperta at Teatro Olimpico should contact the box office before purchase, at biglietti@teatroolimpico.it, to learn about suitable seats and access arrangements.
The hall
The stalls are on a slope and the gallery is on the upper floor: these are elements to consider in choosing the section. Anyone with hearing difficulties should choose the center stalls.
With kids
The theater does not state age limits. The theme is adult, marital infidelity, and the text goes through a dramatic moment. For teenagers it is a good first encounter with Dario Fo and Franca Rame, two names studied at school. For small children it is not the right show.
