52 years after its debut at the Sistina, Aggiungi un posto a tavola is still the show Romans take their children to see, and that those children, grown up, take their own to. The Viola Produzioni production, the same company that runs the Brancaccio, brings it back for the second half of December with the original staging, Giulio Coltellacci's revolving sets and the ark built before the audience's eyes. The verdict is clear-cut: among Christmas musicals in Rome it's the safest title, and the most Roman.

Tickets for Aggiungi un posto a tavola

The full prices published by the Teatro Brancaccio for Aggiungi un posto a tavola are 80 euros for the Poltronissima Gold, 75 for the Poltronissima A, 60 for the Poltronissima B, 50 for the Poltrona A and 40 for the Poltrona B.

Box office

The box office at via Merulana 244 is open Tuesday to Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m., on Sunday it opens only during show hours, on Monday it's closed. In a hall this big, choosing the seat while looking at the seating plan makes a difference: if you live in Rome, go in person.

Authorized channels

The theater warns that tickets bought from unauthorized channels may not grant entry and that resale at a higher price is forbidden. Near Christmas the temptation of the last-minute gift is strong: buy only from the theater's website, at the box office or on the circuit indicated by the organization.

Aggiungi un posto a tavola: the plot

Aggiungi un posto a tavola tells of Don Silvestro, parish priest of a mountain village, who receives a phone call from God in person: he must build a new ark to save his fellow villagers from a second universal flood.

The first act

Don Silvestro convinces the village, despite the greedy mayor Crispino, who doesn't want to hand over the timber and tries to obstruct him in every way. To complicate things comes Consolazione, a woman of easy virtue, who tests the village men on the very night when they should be thinking of their wives. Meanwhile Clementina, the mayor's daughter, is hopelessly in love with the priest, and looks for every pretext to go to confession. Toto, the village's naive boy, discovers love thanks to a miracle.

The second act

When the ark is finished, at the moment of boarding, a cardinal sent from Rome intervenes and convinces the people not to follow Don Silvestro. The flood begins: only the priest and Clementina remain on the ark. Don Silvestro then chooses to step down to share the fate of his faithful. Faced with that gesture, God stops the flood and makes the rainbow appear. The show closes on a festive table, with one more place.

The songs

Trovajoli's score is a collection of titles many Italians know by heart: Aggiungi un posto a tavola, Peccato che sia peccato, Concerto per prete e campane, Notte da non dormire, Consolazione, L'amore secondo me, Una formica è solo una formica in the first act, La ballata di San Crispino, Clementina, Ti voglio, Quando l'arca si fermerà in the second. The finale reprises the title song, and in the hall the audience almost always sings along too.

From Garinei and Giovannini to today: 50 years of a classic

Aggiungi un posto a tavola debuted at the Teatro Sistina in Rome on December 8, 1974, after 70 days of rehearsals, and stayed on stage for six months, a whole season: it had never happened before.

The birth

Between 1973 and 1974 Pietro Garinei and Sandro Giovannini wrote with Iaia Fiastri a story drawn from David Forrest's novel After Me the Deluge, and entrusted the music to Armando Trovajoli, a Roman jazzman who became one of the great film-score composers. The staging cost about 250 million lire, spent mostly on the wooden sets mounted on the Sistina's revolving stage. The title was chosen a few days before the debut, by a vote of the company, which preferred it to La bis bisarca and to Concerto per prete e campane.

The first cast

In 1974 Don Silvestro was Johnny Dorelli, the mayor Paolo Panelli, Consolazione Bice Valori, Clementina Daniela Goggi, Toto Ugo Maria Morosi, the voice from above was Renato Turi. The sets and costumes were by Giulio Coltellacci, the choreography by Gino Landi. After the second edition, in 1977, the show went abroad: London, Vienna, Madrid, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Caracas, São Paulo.

The later editions

The third edition, the most famous and broadcast by Rai, debuted in Milan in 1990, again with Dorelli and with Alida Chelli as Consolazione. In 2002 Don Silvestro was Giulio Scarpati, in 2009 Gianluca Guidi, who returned to the role in the 2017 and 2019 editions as well, both with a stop at the Brancaccio. Enzo Garinei, Pietro's brother, was for years the mayor and then the voice of God.

The 50 years

The current edition debuted with a preview in Senigallia on March 3, 2024 and arrived at the Brancaccio for the fiftieth anniversary. On December 8, 2024, exactly 50 years after the premiere, the via Merulana theater celebrated the anniversary in the presence of previous casts and authorities. On October 10, 2026 the show went on stage for the first time at the Arena di Verona, two months before the return to Rome.

The 2026 cast: Scifoni, Cuccarini and the company

In the 2026 edition Giovanni Scifoni is Don Silvestro, Lorella Cuccarini is Consolazione, Marco Simeoli is the mayor Crispino, Sofia Panizzi is Clementina, Francesco Zaccaro is Toto and Francesca Nunzi is Ortensia.

Giovanni Scifoni, Don Silvestro

Giovanni Scifoni was born in Rome on May 23, 1976, fourth of six children, and graduated from the Accademia nazionale d'arte drammatica in 1998. He has worked in theater with Paolo Poli, Maddalena Crippa, Giorgio Colangeli, he made his film debut in 2003 with Marco Tullio Giordana's The Best of Youth. On television he was in Don Matteo, Un medico in famiglia, Squadra antimafia, Una pallottola nel cuore alongside Gigi Proietti and above all in Doc, nelle tue mani, as head of psychiatry. As an author he has written highly successful theatrical monologues, from Le ultime sette parole di Cristo to Santo piacere and Fra', devoted to Saint Francis, and the series La mia jungla, awarded at the Prix Italia 2020. In the show's presentation he recounts that his father had him watch Aggiungi un posto a tavola on television when he was six, and that it is his first big musical production. He succeeds Johnny Dorelli and Gianluca Guidi in the role.

Lorella Cuccarini, Consolazione

Lorella Cuccarini was born in Rome on August 10, 1965. Discovered by Pippo Baudo, she was the showgirl of Fantastico 6 and Fantastico 7, hosted the Sanremo Festival in 1993 and dozens of variety programs. Musical theater is the second half of her career: Grease with Giampiero Ingrassia from 1997 to 1999, the biggest audience success in Italy up to that time, Sweet Charity between 2005 and 2007, Rapunzel at the Brancaccio in 2014 and again in 2022, as Mother Gothel, La regina di ghiaccio in 2017. In the presentation she recalls that Aggiungi un posto a tavola was the first musical comedy of her childhood, seen several times, and that as a girl she pictured herself as Clementina. Today she is Consolazione, a character who has been Bice Valori's and Alida Chelli's.

Marco Simeoli, mayor and director

Marco Simeoli is the show's living memory. He was Toto in the 2009 edition, then the mayor Crispino in the following editions, for almost 800 performances according to what he states in the presentation. In this edition, besides playing the mayor, he handles the staging of Garinei and Giovannini's original direction: an assignment he says he takes on as a great responsibility.

The other performers

Sofia Panizzi is Clementina, Francesco Zaccaro is Toto, Francesca Nunzi, confirmed, is Ortensia, the mayor's wife. Alessandro Di Giulio, from the ensemble, is the Cardinal. 14 performers complete the cast. The voice from above remains that of Enzo Garinei, who played it for four seasons: the production decided to keep it in his honor, with the family's consent.

Sets, costumes and machinery: how the show is made

The set design of Aggiungi un posto a tavola is the adaptation, signed by Gabriele Moreschi, of Giulio Coltellacci's original design, with the double revolve and the great ark built on stage.

The ark

The set was built by the stage workshop of Mario Amodio, who was the builder of the first 1974 edition, and by Antonio Dari for the mechanical part. It's a rare continuity: the man who built the Sistina's ark also worked on this one. The costumes, from Coltellacci's original drawings adapted by Francesca Grossi, are made by the Sartoria Brancaccio.

Music and choreography

The musical direction is by Maurizio Abeni, formerly assistant to Armando Trovajoli. Gino Landi's original choreography is revived by Cristina Arrò. The lighting design is by Emanuele Agliati, the sound design by Emanuele Carlucci and Simone Della Scala.

The dove

The finale has a performer who doesn't appear on the poster among the actors: the white dove that flies in over the set table. In the show's credits it says she is trained by Fabio Frattari. Scifoni, in the presentation, says he can't wait to give her her feed.

The Teatro Brancaccio: the via Merulana hall

The Teatro Brancaccio, at via Merulana 244, has had its current configuration since 1937: two foyers, a large stalls area and two balconies, for about 2,000 seats at the time. It is the Roman hall that more than any other has tied its name to the musical, and to this title in particular.

Where to sit

For a show of big revolving sets and choral numbers the central stalls are the best choice, but the Poltrone A and B, farther back, also let you take in the stage machinery as a whole. The Poltrona B, at 40 euros, is the cheapest section with a published price and is in the stalls: for a family it's the most sensible solution.

The Brancaccio complex

The Brancaccio is the main hall of a complex that includes the Brancaccino, a theater of about a hundred seats devoted to contemporary dramaturgy and children's theater, training spaces and a terrace on via Merulana. It is run by Viola Produzioni, the same production center that signs Aggiungi un posto a tavola and that has staged, among others, Rapunzel, Sister Act, Peter Pan and La piccola bottega degli orrori.

Getting to the Teatro Brancaccio

Metro A, Vittorio Emanuele stop, is a few minutes' walk from the Brancaccio, Metro B stops at Cavour, a bit farther. From Termini the theater is less than a kilometer away.

By metro

From the Vittorio Emanuele stop you exit onto piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and reach via Merulana in a few minutes. Cavour is convenient for those coming from Monti or the Colosseum. Those getting off the train at Termini can do it all on foot, passing Santa Maria Maggiore, lit up for the holidays in December.

By bus and tram

The theater indicates three stops. On via Merulana, at Merulana/Brancaccio and Merulana/Mecenate, run lines 16, 75, 714, 717 and C3. At the Labicana/Merulana stop run 3, 53, 75, 85, 87, 186, 571, 810, C3 and the night bus N10, to keep in mind after Saturday evening performances.

By car

I advise against the car. The theater doesn't indicate affiliated parking and parking in the Esquilino, in the evening and near Christmas, is difficult. Those arriving from outside Rome should leave the car near a metro station and continue to Vittorio Emanuele.

A curiosity about Aggiungi un posto a tavola at the Teatro Brancaccio in Rome, December 10 to December 20, 2026

The loveliest curiosity concerns the title. A few days before the 1974 debut the show didn't yet have a final name, and it was the company that chose it by a vote. The alternatives were La bis bisarca, a play on words about the second ark, and Concerto per prete e campane, which then stayed as a song title. Aggiungi un posto a tavola won, which is both the title of the best-known number and the moral of the story: knowing how to forgive, making room for whoever arrives.

The second curiosity comes from London. The musical had a very long international life, from Spain to South America, but in the West End, under the title Beyond the Rainbow, it didn't have the same success: the theme of priestly celibacy, which in Italy fueled so many comic bits, was little felt by the English audience. Johnny Dorelli, moreover, had to leave the London performances after being hit by a taxi.

The third is Roman and concerns December. The very first performance was on December 8, 1974, the fiftieth anniversary was celebrated at the Brancaccio on December 8, 2024. This year the show returns two days after the Immaculate Conception: its natural season remains that of the holidays.

Something nobody tells you about Aggiungi un posto a tavola at the Teatro Brancaccio in Rome, December 10 to December 20, 2026

What almost nobody says is that Aggiungi un posto a tavola isn't a children's show, even if children adore it. It's a musical comedy written for adults in 1974, with a priest in love, a woman of easy virtue, a greedy mayor, a cardinal sent from Rome to silence an inconvenient parish priest, and a running gag about Toto's impotence. Children see the ark, the animals, the flood, the dove, adults laugh at other things. It's this double level, typical of Garinei and Giovannini, that made it immortal.

The second thing concerns the direction. In an age when every revival of a classic is reread and updated, this edition makes the opposite choice: it reproduces the original staging, with Coltellacci's sets, Landi's choreography, even Enzo Garinei's recorded voice. Whoever saw the show on television in 1990 will find the same images. For some it's a limitation, for me it's its value: it's a piece of Italian theater history preserved like a repertoire work.

The third is practical: 10 performances in two weeks, near Christmas, for a title that has filled Rome's halls for 50 years. The weekend matinees sell out early.

My advice for seeing Aggiungi un posto a tavola at the Teatro Brancaccio in Rome, December 10 to December 20, 2026

Bring three generations. It's the only show on Rome's program that really works for grandparents, parents and children together: the grandparents saw it at the Sistina or on television, the parents know it from the songs, the children discover it. Choose a matinee, Saturday the 12th or 19th or Sunday the 13th or 20th at 4 p.m., and Poltrona A or B in the stalls: at 50 or 40 euros you see the ark well and save for lunch.

Second piece of advice: prepare the children with the title song, not with the plot. If they arrive knowing the chorus, the finale, when the whole hall sings and the dove flies over the table, becomes their memory of Christmas. Don't tell them about the flood in advance: the scene of the rising water is one of the most successful moments of the stage machinery, and it's nice for it to surprise them.

Third: combine the show with a morning in the Esquilino. Santa Maria Maggiore is at the end of via Merulana, lunch is in Monti or at piazza Vittorio, at 3:30 p.m. you enter the theater without hurry. It's the formula that always works in December.

Another well-known fact, yet rarely cited

Everyone knows Aggiungi un posto a tavola is an Italian musical. Few remember it's drawn from an English novel: After Me the Deluge by David Forrest, in Italian Dopo di me il diluvio. Garinei and Giovannini, with Iaia Fiastri, took from it the idea, the priest who receives from God the order to build an ark, and turned it into a deeply Italian village story, with the mayor, the parish priest, the bell tower and the patron saint's feast.

It's a fact known to enthusiasts, rarely cited: the Italian-style musical comedy, a genre Garinei and Giovannini invented and brought to success at the Sistina, was often built this way, adapting foreign subjects to a recognizable provincial Italy. The result was a popular theater with a simple moral and an undercurrent of irony toward institutions, the Church included. In 1974 the story of a parish priest who kisses the village girl and of a God opposed to the celibacy of his direct collaborators was anything but innocuous. Today it makes you smile, then it made people argue. Watching it again knowing this changes the perspective.

The right photo to take at Aggiungi un posto a tavola at the Teatro Brancaccio in Rome, December 10 to December 20, 2026

During the show you don't take photos: the Brancaccio's rules forbid photos and audio and video recording in the hall, even with a cell phone. The right photo is taken before or after.

The first is the facade on via Merulana with the lit-up billboard, shot from the opposite sidewalk. In December, at 4:30 p.m., it's already almost dark, and the theater's light dominates the street. Frame the whole facade letting in a piece of via Merulana with the evening traffic: it's the image of a popular theater in the middle of a lively neighborhood.

The second is the family photo in the foyer, in front of the poster: for those bringing children to their first musical comedy it's the memory to keep. The third is taken on leaving the matinees: walk toward Santa Maria Maggiore, 10 minutes away, and photograph the basilica's facade lit with Christmas lights. It's a photo that tells the same story as the show: a church, a feast, a city that comes together.

Some important events that happened here in history

The history of the Teatro Brancaccio begins in January 1916, when the via Merulana hall was inaugurated as the Teatro Morgana. In 1937 it took its current configuration, with two foyers, a large stalls area and two balconies, and took the name Teatro Brancaccio. Since then it has been one of Rome's great popular theaters.

From 1985 to 2000 the hall was home to the Fondazione dell'Opera di Roma: for 15 years via Merulana hosted the capital's opera. The Comune di Roma then took over, entrusting the direction to Gigi Proietti until 2007, Maurizio Costanzo followed until 2010 and Stage Entertainment Italia until 2012. Since September 2012 the artistic direction has been Alessandro Longobardi's, with Viola Produzioni, and the theater has become one of the national reference points for the musical.

For Aggiungi un posto a tavola the Brancaccio has become the Roman home: on October 12, 2017 the seventh edition debuted here, revived the following year from November 22 to January 6, 2019, the next edition arrived here on December 18, 2019, on December 8, 2024 the fiftieth anniversary was celebrated here, in December 2025 the show returned for the holidays. The 2026 one is the sixth Roman season of the show on via Merulana in 10 years.

Who has come through Aggiungi un posto a tavola at the Teatro Brancaccio in Rome, December 10 to December 20, 2026

On the Brancaccio stage have passed some of the biggest names in Italian and international entertainment. The theater recalls a few: Totò, Anna Magnani, Aldo Fabrizi and Gigi Proietti among the actors, Fabrizio De André, Louis Armstrong and Jimi Hendrix among the musicians. Proietti wasn't only a guest: he directed the hall from 2000 to 2007.

For Aggiungi un posto a tavola the via Merulana hall has been the stage of several generations of performers. Gianluca Guidi wore Don Silvestro's cassock here in 2017 and 2019, Enzo Garinei, Pietro's brother, was God's voice here, Beatrice Arnera was Clementina here in 2017. Lorella Cuccarini knows this stage well: she played Mother Gothel here in Rapunzel in 2014 and again in 2022, before coming back as Consolazione.

The loveliest continuity is that of Marco Simeoli and Francesca Nunzi, who were at the Brancaccio in the 2017 edition as the mayor and Ortensia, and are still here. In a musical about a community gathering around a table, it's right that the company, too, has a memory. In the same season, on the same stage, Mrs Doubtfire the musical and Raffaella the musical are scheduled.

Around the Brancaccio: Esquilino, Monti and via Merulana

The Teatro Brancaccio is on via Merulana, between the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Giovanni in Laterano, a few minutes from the Colosseum: those who arrive early have around them one of the densest areas of history in the city.

Before the show

Via Merulana connects two major basilicas: on one side Santa Maria Maggiore, on the other San Giovanni in Laterano. On the same street is Palazzo Merulana, with its collection of 20th-century Italian art, and not far away Palazzo Brancaccio. At piazza Vittorio you find the Porta Alchemica, to the west you descend into the Monti district, with San Pietro in Vincoli and, beyond the Colle Oppio, the Domus Aurea.

Where to eat before or after

Via Merulana and the nearby streets have neighborhood bars and venues, suited to an aperitivo or a quick meal before the evening performance. Piazza Vittorio and surroundings are the multiethnic Esquilino, with cuisines from half the world and modest prices. The Monti district, a 15-minute walk away, has trattorias, osterias and wine bars: it's the best choice for dinner after the show or lunch before the matinee. Near Christmas, on weekends, always book.

Accessibility, children and house rules

The Teatro Brancaccio states it has no architectural barriers for access to the stalls, with a ramp, a wheelchair area and an accessible restroom on the ground floor.

Reduced mobility

The theater makes available, while they last, stalls seats for people in wheelchairs with a companion and for those with difficulty walking. The balconies have no elevator. Seats are booked by sending the box office the theater's form with the required certification.

With children

The theater presents the show as a family musical. The rules state that minors under 14 enter only accompanied by an adult. From six years up children follow willingly: the ark, the animals, the flood and the dove are enough to keep them attentive. For the youngest the 4 p.m. matinees are the right time.

Bags and phones

The rules forbid bulky containers over 17 liters, glass bottles, helmets, professional cameras and selfie sticks, umbrellas go to the coat check. Changing seats is forbidden, even with free seats, and photographing or filming the show is forbidden.

December in Rome: the musical at the holidays

The second half of December is the most theatrical period of the year in Rome: the halls offer titles for families, the downtown streets are lit up, churches display nativity scenes. Evenings are cold and often rainy: a raincoat is more practical than an umbrella, which at the Brancaccio has to be left at the coat check.

A Christmas gift

A ticket to Aggiungi un posto a tavola is one of the most classic Christmas gifts for those who live in Rome. The performances of December 17, 18, 19 and 20 are the last before the holidays, and the most in demand for family outings.

The rest of Christmas

Those coming to Rome for a December weekend will find nativity scenes, markets and traditions in the guide to Christmas in Rome. The International Nativity Scene Museum is a stop suited to children, to combine with the Saturday or Sunday matinee.

Buy a matinee now, sit in the stalls and bring whoever in the family hasn't seen it. Aggiungi un posto a tavola needs no introduction, but it needs new spectators to stay alive, and every December at the Brancaccio it finds new ones. With Scifoni, who has the right face for an honest parish priest, and Cuccarini, who knows every board of this hall's stage, it's an edition worth the ticket.
