The Ugly Duckling at the Parioli: date, time and prices

The Ugly Duckling with Fabio Canino is scheduled at Teatro Parioli Costanzo on Wednesday, February 3, 2027 at 21:00, in a single performance, with tickets from 22 to 32 euros and a running time of 90 minutes with no intermission.

A midweek evening

The theater's calendar shows a single performance, on Wednesday night. For those who work it is a convenient evening: start at 21:00, out around 22:30, no intermission to stretch the time. For those coming with school-age kids, the next day is a school Thursday, and it is worth factoring in when planning the ride home.

The orchestra price list

In the orchestra the Parioli distinguishes three bands: poltronissima at 32 euros, poltrona at 30 euros and reduced-visibility poltrona at 28 euros. The difference between the first and last band is four euros: in our opinion, for a show in which the word and live piano count as much as the images, it is worth moving up a band and avoiding the reduced-visibility seats.

The gallery price list

In the gallery the price is 25 euros, dropping to 22 euros for reduced-visibility seats. The gallery offers an overall view of the stage and costumes, those who want to catch the actor's expressions and the exchanges with the pianist will do better to choose the orchestra.

Where to buy tickets

The theater sells at the box office during opening hours, by email at biglietteria@ilparioli.it and via WhatsApp at 351 7211283, the box office phone is 06 5434851. From the show's page on the official website you also reach the presale circuit authorized by the organization, with online purchase and outlets.

Fabio Canino's The Ugly Duckling: what you will see

The Ugly Duckling is a musical fable that starts from Hans Christian Andersen's famous story and rereads it with a contemporary eye, among irony, original music performed on piano and moments of emotion.

A fable for the present

The theater's presentation starts from a simple sentence: everyone, at least once in life, has felt like an ugly duckling. From here Canino builds a tale that crosses the fable to arrive at the present, and that the presentation itself calls timeless and at once able to speak directly to today.

The themes

The text lines up the themes the retelling takes on: the search for perfection, the need to be accepted, body shaming, bullying, fear of difference and the construction of one's identity. They are the same questions Andersen's fable holds in embryo, brought into today's language: the little one mocked by his siblings for his looks, the flight, the loneliness, the final discovery of himself.

Between laughter and emotion

The presentation speaks of funny moments alternating with deeply touching passages. It is Canino's hallmark, coming from comic theater and entertainment television but who in recent years has also built spoken-word and reflective shows. The fable, the theater says, goes beyond its own boundaries and becomes a show that speaks to all generations.

The message

The key is in the presentation's ending: true beauty is born from self-acceptance, and the protagonist's journey is everyone's, learning to recognize your own worth even when the world seems to say the opposite. The theater calls it a fable for adults and kids, dedicated to anyone who has felt different at least once.

The running time

The show runs 90 minutes with no intermission: a compact format, suitable for a young audience too, which does not break up the story and leaves time for dinner beforehand or an easy ride home afterward.

The credits: who is behind The Ugly Duckling

The Ugly Duckling has translation and adaptation by Fabio Canino, Daniele De Joannon and Carmen Giardina, original music by Dino Scuderi, costumes by Emanuele Pepe and direction by Carmen Giardina.

Translation and adaptation

The text is not a simple reading of the fable: the credits list a translation and adaptation by six hands, signed by Canino, Daniele De Joannon and Carmen Giardina. Translating Andersen anew means choosing a tone and a rhythm for the stage, far from the school versions many remember.

Dino Scuderi's music

Dino Scuderi signs the original music and the musical direction and is at the piano. It is an important detail: the music is not a recorded backing track but is played live, and supports the story moment by moment. In the show, the presentation says, Canino rereads the story precisely on Scuderi's original music.

The costumes and the realization

The costumes are by Emanuele Pepe. The credits also note that the Ugly Duckling on stage is made by Gaetano Trotta: the duckling, the fable's protagonist, thus has a physical presence on stage.

Carmen Giardina's direction

The direction is by Carmen Giardina, a Genoese actress and director, who also signs the adaptation. Her biography is told further on, after Canino's.

The Braibanti case

In 2020 she wrote and directed, with Massimiliano Palmese, the documentary Il caso Braibanti, devoted to the scandal trial against Aldo Braibanti, the work was awarded at the 2021 Nastri d'argento. With Palmese she also signed in 2023 the documentary Bellezza, addio. In theater she directed, in 2024, Azzurro, stralci di vita.

A direction about diversity

Giardina's filmography has a recognizable thread: the stories of those judged different. It is the same theme as The Ugly Duckling, and in our opinion it explains the choice to entrust her with directing a fable that, in Canino's retelling, speaks of bullying, acceptance and identity.

Andersen's fable: the story of The Ugly Duckling

The Ugly Duckling, in Danish Den grimme ælling, is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen first published on November 11, 1843 in the collection Nye Eventyr, in Italy it appeared in 1904, in the collection Quaranta novelle, under the title Il brutto anitroccolo.

The plot

In a brood of ducklings a little one is born with gray feathers, big and awkward. His mother loves him, but his siblings and the other barnyard animals mock and shun him, until he runs away. He wanders through the marshes, among wild geese and hunters, finds shelter in a farmhouse where a cat and a hen jeer at him, and endures a very harsh winter. In spring he approaches three swans thinking he will be killed, instead they welcome him, and looking at his reflection in the water he discovers he has become a white swan.

An autobiographical fable

Andersen linked this fable to his own youth, marked by the experience of being shunned and rejected as different. For this reason the story is often read as a metaphor for the difficulties children and teenagers go through growing up, and told to strengthen self-esteem and the acceptance of differences.

Possible readings

The fable lends itself to several interpretations: the worth of every person, which exists even when the context does not recognize it, but also a more ambiguous reading, in which the siblings who mocked the duckling turn out to be mere ducks next to a splendid swan. Canino's retelling takes the path of self-acceptance, and brings it to the themes of body shaming and bullying.

The adaptations

The story has been adapted many times: two Disney shorts in the Silly Symphonies series, a 1956 Soviet short, a 1997 English animated film, a 1998 Spanish animated series, a musical in 2010 and, in March 2024, a one-act opera produced by the Teatro Coccia in Novara. The musical fable by Canino, Scuderi and Giardina joins this long series.

A curiosity about The Ugly Duckling with Fabio Canino at Teatro Parioli Costanzo, February 3, 2027

The most interesting curiosity concerns the Italian title. When Andersen's fable first reached Italy, in 1904, in the collection Quaranta novelle, it was not called Il brutto anatroccolo but Il brutto anitroccolo: a form now nearly vanished, which recalls how the fable became part of common language only with time. Today the expression ugly duckling is used for anyone who, at first despised or ignored, ends up being appreciated.

The second curiosity concerns Fabio Canino and fairy tales. Before becoming a television face, Canino acted in Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tale of Tsar Saltan directed by Luca Ronconi at La Scala, and then in Lewis Carroll's Alice and in Il giornalino di Gianburrasca: the story for young people runs through his whole theater career, and Andersen's fable is the latest chapter of a path begun many years ago.

The third curiosity lies in Dino Scuderi's double job: author of the original music, musical director and pianist. In a musical fable the live piano is not simple accompaniment, but a second voice in dialogue with the actor's. And there is a chance link between the show and the hall: the Parioli, after the 1977 fire, reopened in 1978 with L'anatra all'arancia (Duck à l'Orange). A duck, then as now, on the stage at Via Giosuè Borsi.

Teatro Parioli Costanzo, the venue

Teatro Parioli Costanzo is a private theater of 592 seats at Via Giosuè Borsi 20, in the Parioli district: born as a movie theater in 1938, it has been a theater since December 29, 1958 and since February 20, 2024 has borne Maurizio Costanzo's name.

Orchestra and gallery

The hall is divided between orchestra and gallery, as the show's price list reflects. Rome Capital's tourism portal lists a coat check, coffee shop, bar, air conditioning and restrooms for people with disabilities.

Today's management

Since March 2020 the theater has had new management, with Michele and Enzo Gentile and Giovanni Vernassa, the tourism portal lists Enzo Gentile and Fabrizio Musumeci at the helm. Since mid-2024 the artistic director has been Massimiliano Bruno. Since 2024 the hall also hosts a theater school for children and teens directed by Raoul Bova and Rocío Muñoz Morales.

A hall of the right size

With just under 600 seats, the Parioli is a compact hall compared with Rome's big theaters. For a show of words and piano it is a favorable scale: the voice carries effortlessly even to the gallery and the relationship between stage and audience stays direct. The season's other evenings, from Beh, dai, carino to Brava, bravissima... anche meno with Anna Mazzamauro, tell of a bill that alternates well-known names and young companies.

One thing nobody tells you about The Ugly Duckling with Fabio Canino at Teatro Parioli Costanzo, February 3, 2027

What goes unsaid is that The Ugly Duckling is not a show for small children, even though the title might suggest it. The theater presents it as a fable for adults and kids, and the declared themes, body shaming, bullying, fear of difference, construction of identity, are those of adolescence and adulthood. The evening time, 21:00 on a Wednesday, confirms the intended audience: it is an evening of theater, not a family matinee.

The second thing concerns the reduced-visibility seats. The Parioli's price list includes them both in the orchestra and the gallery, with a discount of two or three euros. In a show with live music and the duckling in the flesh on stage, losing a corner of the scene means losing part of the story. The savings, in our opinion, are not worth the sacrifice.

The third thing is practical: the theater offers a service called Bau Theater, with dog sitting in front of the entrance for the length of the show. For those who live in the neighborhood and do not want to leave the dog alone at home in the evening it is a rare convenience, terms and availability should be asked at the box office.

How to get to Teatro Parioli Costanzo

Teatro Parioli Costanzo is at Via Giosuè Borsi 20, in the Parioli district, in Municipio II, a short distance from Villa Borghese, the theater lists buses 52, 53 and 223 with a stop at Piazza Santiago del Cile.

By bus

Lines 52, 53 and 223 stop at Piazza Santiago del Cile, a few steps from the entrance. For the ride home after 22:30 it is best to check evening times and frequencies on the Atac route planner before leaving home.

By taxi

The theater notes a taxi stand at Piazza Santiago del Cile. At the end of a single performance demand is concentrated in a few minutes: if possible, book the ride in advance.

By car

The theater lists four affiliated parking lots: RTM Garage at Via Alberto Caroncini 50, about 300 meters away, Autorimessa Parioli 31 at Viale Parioli 31, about 400 meters, First Garage at Via Tommaso Salvini 2/F, about 650 meters, F2 Parking at Via Eustachio Manfredi 6, open 24 hours a day all year, by reservation. The first three close on Sunday, but are open on Wednesday evening.

With the dog

For those arriving with the dog there is the Bau Theater service, with dog sitting in front of the theater during the show. It is best to book it together with the ticket.

The advice I give you for visiting The Ugly Duckling with Fabio Canino at Teatro Parioli Costanzo, February 3, 2027

The advice is to choose a poltronissima or an orchestra poltrona, at 30 to 32 euros. The Ugly Duckling rests on three presences: the actor, Scuderi's piano and the duckling made by Gaetano Trotta. From the orchestra you catch the dialogue between Canino's voice and the music, which is the heart of the musical fable, the gallery remains a good choice for those who want to spend less and see the stage as a whole, avoiding the reduced-visibility seats.

The second piece of advice concerns who to go with. If there is a middle or high school kid in the family going through a hard time with classmates, this show can open a conversation that is hard to start at home. The theater says it clearly: it is a fable dedicated to anyone who has felt different at least once. It is best to talk about it beforehand, without turning the evening into a lesson, and let the questions come afterward.

Third piece of advice: reread the fable before going. 10 minutes is enough, and Andersen's version is harsher and longer than the ones remembered from childhood, with the winter in the ice and the temptation to let the swans kill him. Knowing the original helps catch the adaptation's choices, and understand how much Canino's retelling shifts the emphasis onto the present.

Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned

It is well known that Fabio Canino was for nearly 20 years one of the judges of Ballando con le stelle, from 2007 to 2025, and that the television audience associates him with scores on choreographies and live quips. Far less is said that his training is theatrical and that his résumé includes directors like Luca Ronconi, Carlo Cecchi and Angelo Savelli, and stages like La Scala's. The return to a musical fable is not an excursion outside his trade, but a return to his origins.

A second little-cited fact concerns the fable itself. The Ugly Duckling is almost always read as a story of revenge, but in Andersen's version the protagonist does nothing to become a swan: he was one from the start, only that no one, himself included, had noticed. It is a detail that changes the meaning of the story, and that the stage retelling puts at the center when it speaks of recognizing your own worth even when the world seems to say the opposite.

Finally, a fact about the Parioli: before being called Parioli Costanzo, from 2011 the hall was called Teatro Parioli Peppino De Filippo, at the wish of Luigi De Filippo, in homage to his father. Three names in nearly 70 years, each tied to a different season of the hall.

The right photo to take at The Ugly Duckling with Fabio Canino at Teatro Parioli Costanzo, February 3, 2027

During the show no photos or filming: they disturb the actor, the musician and nearby spectators. The right photo is taken before and after. The first is at the entrance on Via Giosuè Borsi, with the Teatro Parioli Costanzo sign and the evening's poster: at the start of February it gets dark early, and around 20:30 the lit entrance is the best subject.

The second, inside, before the lights go down: the hall seen from the gallery, with the stage ready. It is the image of the hall that for years millions of Italians saw on television, today a full-time theater again.

The third photo is an idea tied to the theme. The Ugly Duckling is about how we see ourselves and how others see us: a photo with whoever shared the evening, taken unfiltered and untouched, is the most coherent way to remember it. Then, perhaps, post it as is.

The Parioli district and the theater's surroundings

The Parioli is a residential district of northern Rome, built largely in the twentieth century among apartment buildings, villinos and tree-lined avenues, right beside Villa Borghese.

Villa Borghese

Villa Borghese is the city's great historic park. Inside are the Galleria Borghese, to be booked in advance, and the Museo Carlo Bilotti, on the side toward the Parioli is the Bioparco di Roma (Rome Zoo), where those coming with kids can spend the afternoon before the show.

Villa Ada and Villa Torlonia

Farther north extends Villa Ada, wide and wild. Toward Via Nomentana is Villa Torlonia, with the Casina delle Civette.

The Auditorium

Beyond Viale Parioli is Auditorium Parco della Musica: those spending a few days in Rome can combine the Wednesday fable with a concert during the rest of the week.

Some important events that took place here in history

The history of Teatro Parioli begins in 1938, when the building on Via Giosuè Borsi was born as a movie theater. On December 29, 1958 it became a theater with Arthur Schnitzler's Girotondo (La Ronde), staged by the company of Ernesto Calindri and Vivi Gioi. In the 1960s it lived the season of satirical revue, with Alighiero Noschese, Antonella Steni and Elio Pandolfi and with Dino Verde's Scanzonatissimo, in 1963.

In 1976 Alberto Lionello and the impresario Lucio Ardenzi took over the hall. On December 8, 1977 the theater suffered a fascist attack and was set on fire, it reopened on April 28, 1978 with L'anatra all'arancia, directed by Lionello himself. In 1980, after Romolo Valli's death, Giorgio De Lullo, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Umberto Tirelli, Dino Trappetti and Nico Ferri founded the Gruppo teatro libero RV and took over management of the Parioli, until De Lullo's death in July 1981.

From September 1985 the hall hosted the filming of the Maurizio Costanzo Show, from 1989 Costanzo was also artistic director, until 2011. Then came Luigi De Filippo, who named the theater for his father Peppino. In March 2020 management changed, with Piero Maccarinelli as director, on February 20, 2024 the hall took the name Teatro Parioli Costanzo, and from mid-2024 artistic direction passed to Massimiliano Bruno.

Who has played at The Ugly Duckling with Fabio Canino at Teatro Parioli Costanzo, February 3, 2027

A good part of Italian theater and television has passed over the Parioli stage. On opening night, in 1958, Ernesto Calindri and Vivi Gioi. In the 1960s Alighiero Noschese, Antonella Steni, Elio Pandolfi. In the 1970s Alberto Lionello, then Giorgio De Lullo, Pier Luigi Pizzi and Umberto Tirelli, the tailor of great theater and film costumes.

With Maurizio Costanzo, from 1985, thousands of television guests passed through. With Luigi De Filippo came Gianrico Tedeschi, Ugo Pagliai, Franco Branciaroli and Maurizio Donadoni in Dipartita finale, Giorgio Albertazzi in Memorie di Adriano directed by Maurizio Scaparro, and a Waiting for Godot.

On February 3, 2027 it is the turn of Fabio Canino, a face of entertainment television who here returns to the theater of his origins, with a fable about being looked at and judged. With him Dino Scuderi on music and, behind the scenes, Carmen Giardina, Daniele De Joannon, Emanuele Pepe and Gaetano Trotta. And, for one evening, a duckling that becomes a swan on the stage that was Italy's most famous television living room.

Who The Ugly Duckling is for

The Ugly Duckling is designed, according to the theater, for adults and kids: a fable that speaks to all generations, with themes that touch adolescence above all.

The kids

The theater indicates no age limits. The themes, bullying, body shaming, self-acceptance, are those of middle and high school, and in our opinion the show suits ages 11 or 12 and up. For younger children the evening hour and the 90 minutes without a break can be demanding.

The families

For a parent it is a chance to see together with their kids a show that speaks of them without speaking of them directly. The fable acts as a screen: you talk about the duckling, and everyone brings their own story.

Musical theater fans

Those who love musical theater will find a compact form: one actor, original music played live, costumes. Far from the big musicals, closer to song theater and the told fable.

Accessibility at Teatro Parioli Costanzo

Rome Capital's tourism portal lists Teatro Parioli Costanzo as accessible to people with disabilities, with dedicated restrooms.

Booking seats

For specific orchestra seats, for wheelchair users or those with walking difficulties, contact the box office at 06 5434851 or by email before buying, so as to get a suitable seat.

A hall with no intermission

The 90-minute running time with no intermission should be considered by those who need breaks: use the restrooms before the start and, if possible, choose a seat near the aisle.

Where to eat before or after the show

With the start at 21:00 and the end around 22:30, there are two solutions: an early dinner, around 19:30, or a meal after the show. The theater has a coffee shop and bar for a coffee or a snack before entering.

In the neighborhood

Around Piazza Ungheria and along Viale Parioli you find bars, pizzerias, neighborhood restaurants and places for an aperitivo. On Wednesday night the neighborhood is quiet, but some places have their weekly day off midweek: check beforehand.

With kids

Those coming with kids can pick a pizzeria for a quick dinner before 20:30, so as to reach the theater unhurried and with time to leave coats at the coat check.

February in Rome: a winter evening of theater

At the start of February Rome is in the thick of the theater season, with bills alternating major titles and single performances like this one.

The weather

February evenings are cold and often damp: a coat and an umbrella are indispensable, and the theater's coat check means not holding them on your lap for 90 minutes.

The other shows

The same week, at Teatro Brancaccio on Via Merulana there are evenings of comedy, spoken-word theater and music. Those who want to build a week of theater in Rome have many options. The Parioli's bill is on the official Teatro Parioli Costanzo website.
