A printer on the verge of bankruptcy, a public housing apartment occupied without any right to it, an eviction that becomes a political case: Cornacchione, the comedian of “Povero Silvio,” returns to satire with a farce that the theater's own presentation calls rough and politically incorrect, with a few echoes of the most comically engaged Dario Fo. On stage with him are two faces the audience has known for decades, a Roman actor and director nominated for an Oscar and a Milanese comedian who came up with Serena Dandini and the Gialappa's Band.

Basta poco in Rome: dates, times and tickets

The theater card

The theater offers the Parioli Easy card, valid for the shows of the season, excluding the children's series Il Parioli Kids. Anyone planning to come back several times during the season does well to look at it before buying a single ticket.

Basta poco: the plot of the farce

Basta poco tells the story of Palmiro, a printer on the verge of bankruptcy who lives, without any right to it, in a public housing apartment owned by the Region and registered in the name of his parents, who died a few years ago.

Palmiro and his employee

To avoid paying severance to his only employee, a Hungarian woman he is secretly in love with, Palmiro offers her a place to live with him, with room and board guaranteed. It is the first of a series of petty and slightly tender schemes, the kind of small-time cunning on which Italian comedy has always built its best characters.

The eviction

One day the eviction arrives, and the apartment is assigned to a family of Roma origin. From here the story changes scale: Palmiro's home becomes the center of a political dispute between the social centers, who want to throw him out, and the neo-fascists, who defend him for their own purposes in exchange for ideological support.

Certainties put to the test

The theater's presentation insists on this point: the neo-fascists' offer of protection puts the protagonist's political certainties to a hard test. This is the mechanism of the farce, in which an ordinary man finds himself fought over by two camps that do not know him and that use him, each for its own battle.

A hero in spite of himself

Palmiro, the presentation anticipates, will come out of it deeply changed and will become a hero, in spite of himself. The ending is not revealed, but the point is: the story of a little man who, without wanting to, ends up at the center of a conflict bigger than he is.

A rough farce, with echoes of Dario Fo

Teatro Parioli Costanzo presents Basta poco as a funny but rough farce, politically incorrect, with some echoes of the most comically engaged period of Dario Fo's theater.

What farce means today

Farce is the oldest and most direct comic genre: extreme situations, recognizable characters, a rhythm that leaves no room to breathe. Choosing farce to talk about public housing, evictions and extremism means giving up the distance of drawing-room satire and putting the audience in front of an absurd situation, in which you laugh before you understand who you are laughing at.

Politically incorrect

The definition comes from the theater, and it should be taken literally: the plot puts on stage social centers, neo-fascists, a Roma family, a Hungarian immigrant, a small businessman who cheats the State. Nobody comes out unscathed, and that is the premise of a successful farce. Anyone looking for a reassuring comedy should know that the text, by its own admission, is not one.

The Dario Fo model

The echo of Dario Fo is not a casual reference. The director Marco Rampoldi made his debut as Fo's assistant, before training at the Piccolo Teatro with Giorgio Strehler: the tradition of Milanese comic and political theater, the one in which laughter serves to uncover contradictions, is at home in this company.

Who Antonio Cornacchione is: biography

Antonio Cornacchione was born in Montefalcone nel Sannio, in Molise, on September 26, 1959, and is a comedian, cabaret performer and actor. As a child his family moved to Pavia, then to Como and finally to Milan, where he still lives.

The early days at Zelig

In 1991 he made his debut at the Zelig theater in Milan, alongside Paolo Rossi, Gianni Palladino and the trio Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo. It is the season in which the Milanese club became the training ground of new Italian comedy, the kind that from the late 1990s would reach television with the programs that carry the club's name.

Political satire

In 1992 he took part in Su la testa! on Rai 3, was a guest on the Maurizio Costanzo Show and won the Forte dei Marmi prize for political satire. His best-known character is tied to the catchphrase “Povero Silvio!”, a satire on the misunderstood goodness of Silvio Berlusconi, which gives its title to two of his books published by Kowalski, Povero Silvio in 2004 and Povero Silvio Bis in 2005.

Television

Since September 1998 he has been in the cast of Casa Vianello, where he plays the doorman. In the following years he was on Zelig Off, Crozza Italia, Che tempo che fa with Fabio Fazio and Zelig Circus. In 2007 he took part as a comedian in the 57th Sanremo Festival. In 2010 he was on Raiperunanotte, live from Bologna, where he comically defended the freedom of television journalism. In 2012 he was in Robinson on Rai 3.

Theater

On stage he is in Circo by Paolo Rossi, directed by Giampiero Solari, in 1995, and in 1999 he has a small part in Tel chi el telùn by Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo, directed by Arturo Brachetti. His own shows follow, Povero Silvio in 2003 and Sia lodato Silvio in 2008, Cecile directed by Elio De Capitani in 2007, L'ho fatto per il mio paese directed by Daniele Sala in 2013, Cronache sessuali, which he directs himself, in 2014, and Ieri è un altro giorno directed by Eric Civanyan in 2018.

Film

In film he acts, among other things, in La grande prugna by Claudio Malaponti, in 1999, in Faccio un salto all'Avana by Dario Baldi and in Bar Sport by Massimo Martelli, both from 2011. In Basta poco he is author and performer, as in his satirical shows: the difference is that here the target is not a political leader, but an entire country.

Pino Quartullo, actor and director

Giuseppe Quartullo, known as Pino, was born in Civitavecchia on July 12, 1957, and is an actor, director, screenwriter and playwright. He has a degree in architecture, a diploma in directing from the Silvio D'Amico Academy of Dramatic Art and a diploma in acting from Gigi Proietti's Laboratory of Stage Exercises.

The Oscar-nominated short film

In 1987 he was nominated for an Oscar with the short film Exit, in the live action category, together with Stefano Reali. It is a fact that theater audiences rarely remember.

A life on stage

His repertoire runs from Fra diavolo, directed by Aldo Trionfo in 1980, to The Miser directed by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, from Tennessee Williams's Summer and Smoke with Armando Pugliese to Dramma della gelosia, Stregata dalla luna, Gossip and Quella del piano di sopra directed by Gigi Proietti. He has directed and acted in Machiavelli, Goldoni, Shakespeare, Woody Allen, Pasolini, Ariosto and T. S. Eliot.

Teatro Traiano and teaching

From 2000 to 2013 he was artistic director of Teatro Traiano in Civitavecchia, his hometown. He teaches acting at the ACT Multimedia Academy at Cinecittà. In December 2021 he received the Vincenzo Crocitti International Prize.

The voice of Jim Carrey

Few people associate him with dubbing, yet Quartullo gave Jim Carrey his Italian voice in The Mask and in Dumb and Dumber. The Parioli presentation calls him histrionic: anyone who remembers those two films knows where that comic energy comes from.

Alessandra Faiella, comedian and actress

Alessandra Faiella was born in Milan on September 9, 1962. She has a degree in Letters and Philosophy from the DAMS in Bologna and a diploma from the mime and theater school Quelli di Grock.

With Serena Dandini

After many years in the theater, she made her television debut in 1996 in Producer, hosted by Serena Dandini, with whom she also worked on the Pippo Chennedy Show in 1997 and on Comici in 1999. She took part in the 1998 and 1999 editions of Zelig, facciamo cabaret.

With the Gialappa's Band

In 2003 the Gialappa's Band wanted her in the cast of Mai dire domenica, where she plays Tania, Mago Forest's next-door neighbor. Bulldozer followed in 2005, Glob and Markette in 2006, Tribbù on Rai 2 and Stiamo lavorando per noi with Renato Pozzetto and Cochi Ponzoni in 2007. In the 2010/2011 season she was often a panelist on Daria Bignardi's Le invasioni barbariche. In 2016 she is on Colorado.

Film and writing

She made her film debut in 1999 alongside Luciana Littizzetto in La grande prugna, the same film Cornacchione acts in: the two, then, already shared a set more than 25 years ago. She then works with Max Croci, from Rosso tigre to La verità, vi spiego, sull'amore, and in 2022 she is in Le voci sole. For Fazi Editore she published the book Il lato B.

The direction of Marco Rampoldi

Marco Rampoldi, born in Milan on April 2, 1966, is a theater director who made his debut as Dario Fo's assistant and trained at the Piccolo Teatro, taking part in some of Giorgio Strehler's productions.

Between Ronconi and the comedians

With a degree in architecture and a thesis on the television theater of Luca Ronconi, he worked with the maestro and directed for the Piccolo, on his initiative, Bontempelli's La guardia alla luna and Bibbiena's La Calandria. On the other side he wrote the monologues of comedians loved by the general public: Teresa Mannino, Leonardo Manera, Max Pisu, Claudio Batta, Rita Pelusio.

A team already proven

Rampoldi has already directed Alessandra Faiella twice: in 2011 in Stasera non escort, with Margherita Antonelli, Claudia Penoni and Rita Pelusio, and in 2012 in Alan Bennett's Nudi e crudi, the first stage version authorized by the author, with Max Pisu. He is a director who knows the comic timing of cabaret performers and knows how to put it at the service of a text.

A curiosity about Basta poco with Cornacchione, Quartullo and Faiella at Teatro Parioli Costanzo, March 3 to 7, 2027

The best curiosity is about the stage. In 1992 Antonio Cornacchione, a young comedian from the Milanese Zelig, was a guest on the Maurizio Costanzo Show. From September 1985 that program was recorded right at Teatro Parioli, and from 1989 Costanzo also ran the theater, until 2011. Today the hall is called Teatro Parioli Costanzo, and Cornacchione returns to that stage as author and lead, more than 30 years later, with a text written by himself.

The second curiosity is a crossing of sets. Cornacchione and Alessandra Faiella both acted in 1999 in La grande prugna by Claudio Malaponti, the film that marked Faiella's film debut alongside Luciana Littizzetto. Two comedians of the same Milanese season, born between Zelig and the television of the late 1990s, meet again now in a farce written by one of them.

The third concerns Pino Quartullo and Roman theater in these very days. In 2010 Quartullo was on stage in L'ebreo by Gianni Clementi, directed by Enrico Maria Lamanna and with Ornella Muti. From March 4 to 21, 2027, a few kilometers from Parioli, at Teatro Manzoni, Lamanna directs Ornella Muti again in L'invisibile che c'è: a small reunion at a distance, in the same week.

Teatro Parioli Costanzo, the venue of the show

Teatro Parioli Costanzo is a private hall with 592 seats at Via Giosuè Borsi 20, in the Parioli neighborhood, in Municipio II. It began as a cinema in 1938, has been a theater since 1958 and is known throughout Italy for having hosted the Maurizio Costanzo Show for years.

The hall

The hall is divided between orchestra and gallery, and this division determines the sections and the prices. The Rome tourism portal of Roma Capitale lists restrooms for people with disabilities, a coat check, a café, a bar and air conditioning.

Management today

Since March 2020 the theater has been run by new owners, with Michele and Enzo Gentile and Giovanni Vernassa. The tourism portal lists Enzo Gentile and Fabrizio Musumeci as management. Since February 20, 2024 it has carried the name of Maurizio Costanzo, and since mid-2024 the artistic director has been Massimiliano Bruno. The theater also has a school for children and teenagers run by Raoul Bova and Rocío Muñoz Morales.

The season

In the 2026/2027 season Parioli opened October with the K[orean]Pop Concert and with Beh, dai, carino, and hosted Anna Mazzamauro in Brava, bravissima... anche meno. Basta poco arrives in March, when the season is in full swing.

Something nobody tells you about Basta poco with Cornacchione, Quartullo and Faiella at Teatro Parioli Costanzo, March 3 to 7, 2027

What nobody says is that the story of Basta poco, however it is built as a farce, touches a very concrete theme for Rome: public housing, assignments, apartments occupied by people with no right to them, and the neighborhood tensions that come out of it. The Parioli audience, from a residential neighborhood in the north of the city, will laugh at a story that in other parts of Rome is news. That is exactly how farce works: it takes a real situation and pushes it to the point of paradox.

The second thing concerns the start times. The five performances have three different start times: 21:00 on weekdays, 19:00 on Saturday, 17:00 on Sunday. It is a detail that is easy to forget, and showing up at 21:00 on Saturday means arriving after the show is over. It pays to take a photo of your ticket and check it before you leave.

The third is practical: three of the partner parking lots listed by the theater are closed on Sunday. For the matinee of March 7, what remains is the one on Via Eustachio Manfredi, open every day by reservation, or the bus.

How to get to Teatro Parioli Costanzo

Teatro Parioli Costanzo is at Via Giosuè Borsi 20, in the Parioli neighborhood, and the theater itself gives Piazza Santiago del Cile as a reference point, where the buses stop and there is a taxi stand.

By bus

The theater lists lines 52, 53 and 223, with a stop in Piazza Santiago del Cile, a few steps from the entrance. For the 21:00 performances it pays to check the evening return runs first on the Atac route planner.

By taxi

In Piazza Santiago del Cile there is a taxi stand, pointed out by the theater: it is the most convenient solution for getting back after the evening performances.

By car

The partner parking lots listed by the theater are at Via Alberto Caroncini 50, about 300 meters away, at Viale Parioli 31, about 400 meters away, and at Via Tommaso Salvini 2/F, about 650 meters away, all closed on Sunday. At Via Eustachio Manfredi 6 there is a lot open 24 hours a day, every day of the year, by reservation.

With your dog

The theater offers the Bau Theater service, dog sitting in front of the entrance for the length of the show: a convenience that is rare in Roman theaters. Terms and availability are to be asked at the box office.

The tip I give you for visiting Basta poco with Cornacchione, Quartullo and Faiella at Teatro Parioli Costanzo, March 3 to 7, 2027

My tip is to choose the performance on Saturday, March 6 at 19:00. The earlier start lets you see the show and then have a relaxed dinner in the neighborhood, without chasing the last bus, and on Saturday the hall is generally livelier: in a farce laughter is contagious, and a full house helps. Anyone who prefers calm should pick Wednesday or Thursday.

The second tip concerns attitude. Basta poco is presented as politically incorrect: the text sends up everyone, from the social centers to the neo-fascists to the protagonist himself. In our view it pays to arrive ready to laugh even at what you agree with. That is the rule of farce, and the tradition of Dario Fo that the presentation refers to has been teaching it for 60 years.

The third concerns your seat. For a comedy built on words like this one, the orchestra, in the central rows, gives you the expressions and the comic timing better. The gallery sees the whole picture well but loses some of the details. With three performers on stage for 90 minutes, looks count as much as the lines.

Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned

It is well known that Antonio Cornacchione is the comedian of “Povero Silvio,” the catchphrase that for years made people laugh at the former prime minister. Much less remembered is that in 1992, before all this, he won the Forte dei Marmi prize for political satire. The same prize, in the section dedicated to stand-up comedy, went in 2020 to Michela Giraud, who a few days later, on March 7 and 8, 2027, is on stage at Teatro Brancaccio: two generations of satirical comedy in the same Roman week.

A second well-known and rarely mentioned fact concerns Pino Quartullo. Everyone remembers his face in the comedies of the 1990s. Very few know that in 1987 he was nominated for an Oscar for the short film Exit, with Stefano Reali, and that for 13 years, from 2000 to 2013, he ran Teatro Traiano in Civitavecchia, the city where he was born.

The third concerns the director. Marco Rampoldi made his debut as Dario Fo's assistant: when the presentation of Basta poco evokes the echoes of Fo's theater, it does so with full knowledge of the facts, because the person directing the show learned the trade at his side.

The right photo to take at Basta poco with Cornacchione, Quartullo and Faiella at Teatro Parioli Costanzo, March 3 to 7, 2027

During the show you do not take photos and you do not film: in a farce built on comic timing, a lit screen distracts the actors and the person sitting next to you. The right photo is taken before and after.

Before, at the entrance on Via Giosuè Borsi, with the sign of Teatro Parioli Costanzo and the poster of Basta poco. The official image of the show has the three performers posing: Quartullo in a leather jacket, Faiella in a blond bob wig, Cornacchione at the bottom, with wide eyes. Recreating the pose in front of the poster, the three of you, is the funniest way to tell the story of the evening.

Inside, before the lights go down, if the staff allows it, a shot of the hall from the gallery: the orchestra filling up and the stage still empty. It is the hall that millions of Italians watched on television for years, and in person it makes quite an impression. For the Sunday matinee there is still light when you come out: the tree-lined avenues of the Parioli neighborhood and, not far away, Villa Borghese offer a backdrop for an end-of-day photo.

The Parioli neighborhood and the area around the theater

Parioli is a residential neighborhood in the north of Rome, made of apartment buildings, villini and tree-lined avenues, right next to Villa Borghese and not far from Via Veneto.

Villa Borghese

Villa Borghese is the city's great historic park. Inside it you find Galleria Borghese, which has to be booked in advance, and Museo Carlo Bilotti. On the side toward Parioli there is the Bioparco di Roma (Rome Zoo), suited to a morning with children before the Sunday matinee.

Villa Ada and Villa Torlonia

Farther north stretches Villa Ada, a large and not very tamed park. Toward Via Nomentana there is Villa Torlonia, with the Casina delle Civette: a morning walk goes well with an afternoon performance.

Via Veneto

Going down toward the center you reach Via Veneto, the street of the Dolce Vita. For anyone who wants to stretch the evening after the show, a drink in one of its cafés closes the day in another piece of Roman show business history.

Some important events that happened here in history

The history of Teatro Parioli begins in 1938, when the building on Via Giosuè Borsi was born as a cinema. On December 29, 1958 it became a theater with Girotondo by Arthur Schnitzler, staged by the company of Ernesto Calindri and Vivi Gioi. In the 1960s it lived through the season of the satirical revue, with Alighiero Noschese, Antonella Steni and Elio Pandolfi, and with Dino Verde's Scanzonatissimo, in 1963.

In 1976 Alberto Lionello and the impresario Lucio Ardenzi took over the hall. On December 8, 1977 the theater suffered a fascist-inspired attack and was set on fire. It reopened on April 28, 1978 with L'anatra all'arancia, directed by Lionello himself. In 1980, after the death of Romolo Valli, Giorgio De Lullo, Pier Luigi Pizzi, Umberto Tirelli, Dino Trappetti and Nico Ferri founded the Gruppo teatro libero RV and took over the management of Parioli, until De Lullo's death on July 10, 1981.

From September 1985 the Maurizio Costanzo Show arrived. From 1989 Costanzo was also artistic director, until 2011. Then Luigi De Filippo named the hall after his father Peppino. In March 2020 the new owners arrived, and on February 20, 2024 the name became Teatro Parioli Costanzo. A farce that puts neo-fascists and social centers on stage, in a theater that in 1977 was set on fire by a fascist-inspired attack, carries a weight that goes beyond the joke.

Who has passed through Basta poco with Cornacchione, Quartullo and Faiella at Teatro Parioli Costanzo, March 3 to 7, 2027

A large part of Italian theater and television has passed through Parioli. On the first night, in 1958, Ernesto Calindri and Vivi Gioi. In the 1960s Alighiero Noschese, Antonella Steni and Elio Pandolfi. In the 1970s Alberto Lionello. Then Giorgio De Lullo, Pier Luigi Pizzi and Umberto Tirelli.

With Maurizio Costanzo, for more than 20 years, thousands of television guests came through on the stage, among them, in 1992, a young Antonio Cornacchione. With Luigi De Filippo came Gianrico Tedeschi, Ugo Pagliai, Franco Branciaroli and Maurizio Donadoni in Dipartita finale, Giorgio Albertazzi in Memorie di Adriano directed by Maurizio Scaparro, and a Waiting for Godot.

Other important names pass through the careers of the three performers: Paolo Rossi, Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo, Arturo Brachetti, Elio De Capitani, Fabio Fazio and Maurizio Crozza for Cornacchione. Gigi Proietti, Aldo Trionfo, Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, Armando Pugliese, Pietro Garinei and Ornella Muti for Quartullo. Serena Dandini, the Gialappa's Band, Mago Forest, Renato Pozzetto and Cochi Ponzoni, Luciana Littizzetto for Faiella. From March 3 to 7, 2027, Palmiro, his Hungarian employee and a whole neighborhood at odds pass through Via Giosuè Borsi.

Where to eat before or after the show

Teatro Parioli Costanzo has a bar and a café inside, useful for a coffee before the start. For dinner you go out into the neighborhood.

With a 21:00 start

For the weekday performances there are two ways to go: an early dinner, around 19:30, or an aperitivo and dinner after the show, which ends around 22:30. In the neighborhood, along Viale Parioli and the streets around it, you find bars, pizzerias and restaurants frequented by residents.

Saturday at 19:00

With the 19:00 start on Saturday, March 6, you are out around 20:30: it is the ideal time for a real dinner, unhurried, without eating on your feet before going into the hall. On Saturday night the neighborhood is lively, and it pays to book.

Sunday afternoon

The Sunday matinee on March 7 allows a late lunch before the show and a dinner when you come out. Anyone arriving from outside Rome can head home in the evening.

Accessibility, recommended age and practical information

The Rome tourism portal of Roma Capitale lists Teatro Parioli Costanzo as accessible to people with disabilities, with dedicated restrooms. For reserved seats it pays to contact the box office before buying, by phone at 06 5434851 or by WhatsApp at 351 7211283.

With teenagers

Basta poco is a farce for an adult audience: the themes, between evictions, extremism and cunning at the State's expense, and the politically incorrect register declared by the presentation make it suitable, in our view, for teens from age 14, especially if they are used to television satire.

Arriving on time

The show is a single act of 90 minutes, with no intermission: anyone who arrives late risks having to wait or coming in and disturbing others. With the three different start times during the week, checking your ticket before you leave avoids surprises.

Early March in Rome, at the theater

The first week of March is a good time for theater in Rome: the season is in full swing, the days are getting longer and the evenings are still cool.

The weather

In early March the evening temperature is still low: a heavy coat to leave at the theater coat check is the right choice, especially for anyone waiting for the bus in Piazza Santiago del Cile after 22:30.

A week of comedy

In the same week Rome offers a lot of live comedy: from March 4 Ornella Muti is at Teatro Manzoni, on March 7 and 8 Michela Giraud is at Brancaccio, on March 8 Barutz is at Sala Umberto and on the 9th Pierluca Mariti is at Ambra Jovinelli. Anyone staying in town a few days can build a small personal festival, moving from farce to stand-up.
