Meeting the artists
On the occasion of the Italian premiere, the Romaeuropa Festival announces a talk afterward with Giacomo Bisordi and Fabrizio Sinisi, as part of the festival's artist-audience encounters, in collaboration with Rai Radio 3, curated by Lorenzo Pavolini and moderated by Monica D'Onofrio.
What you see in Il Prodigio
Il Prodigio tells of the appearance of a face in the sky of a large Italian city and the earthquake of faith, fear and desire that the face unleashes.
A face in the sky
In the sky of a large Italian city a face appears, with crude, almost childlike features. At first it's an anomaly, then a presence, finally an enigma able to channel collective desires, fears and tensions. Around the apparition, signs, healings and inexplicable events multiply. The question the show leaves open is the same one the characters ask: projection, deception or divine manifestation?
Don Luca, Marta and Folker
At the center of the story are three figures. Don Luca is a media priest, more used to talking about faith than practicing it. Marta is an enigmatic, elusive figure. Folker is a magnetic prophet, able to tap into the need for spirituality and turn it into a new, disturbing form of cult. It's a triangle that pits institutional religion turned spectacle against personal mystery and charisma turned power.
An apocalypse in the original sense
The theater's presentation insists on one point: more than an adaptation, the work takes shape as a contemporary apocalypse in the original sense of the word, that is, a revelation. Bisordi moves through the novel as through a book of visions and builds a sequence of images, collapses and apparitions that crack every system of meaning. The final question is addressed to the audience: faced with the inexplicable, when every certainty wavers, what do we choose to believe?
The artistic team
The adaptation is by Giacomo Bisordi and Fabrizio Sinisi, direction by Bisordi. On stage, in alphabetical order, are Matilde Bernardi, Candida Nieri, Gabriele Portoghese and Federica Rosellini. Sets are by Marco Giusti, costumes by Caterina Rossi, who is also collaborating set designer, sound by Dario Felli. Assistant directors are Paolo Costantini and Marta Dellabona, and the dramaturg is Dimitri Galli Rohl. The production is by La Fabbrica dell'Attore, Teatro Vascello, co-produced with the Romaeuropa Festival and LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura.
Fabrizio Sinisi's novel
Il Prodigio is the first novel by Fabrizio Sinisi, a playwright, published by Mondadori and winner of the 2026 Intersezioni prize.
A playwright turns to the novel
Sinisi comes to the novel from writing for the stage. The theater presents the book as enthusiastically received by critics, and the 2026 Intersezioni prize confirmed its reception. That the novel now returns to the stage, with the author involved in the adaptation, closes a circle: a story born from a playwright finds again the form its author usually writes for.
Why read it first
If you like to arrive at the theater knowing the story, the novel gives you the full account, with the long tempo that fiction allows. If you prefer surprise, you can take the opposite route: see the show and read the book afterward, finding the images of the staging inside the page. In our view the second route is the more interesting, because the show declares it's not a simple adaptation.
Giacomo Bisordi, the director
Giacomo Bisordi, born in Lucca in 1985, is a director and dramaturg, graduated in directing from the Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica Silvio D'Amico in 2012 and since 2019 a regular collaborator of Milo Rau.
From biology to theater
Before theater, Bisordi graduated in Biomolecular Sciences and Technologies. In 2012 he earned his directing diploma from the Accademia Silvio D'Amico in Rome, the school that has produced a large part of Italian theater.
With Milo Rau and NTGent
Since 2019 he has been a regular collaborator of Milo Rau, dramaturg of his company International Institute of Political Murder and coordinator of dramaturgy at NTGent, the theater in Ghent, where he helps shape the seasons. As a dramaturg he has worked on Warlop's ONE SONG and Delirium, Bangura's Great Apes of the West Coast, and Rau's The Interrogation, Antigone in the Amazon, La Lettre and RAGE. He works with international institutions such as the Avignon Festival, the Kunstenfestivaldesarts and the Wiener Festwochen.
His productions
As a director he has staged contemporary plays by Fraser, Berkoff, Skinner, Birch, Crimp, Zeldin and David Foster Wallace. His most significant projects include Marius von Mayenburg's Peng, La fabbrica degli attori from Edoardo Albinati's La scuola cattolica and Shakespeare's Measure for Measure.
The performers: Portoghese, Rosellini, Bernardi, Nieri
The cast of Il Prodigio brings together two of the most awarded actors of their generation, Gabriele Portoghese and Federica Rosellini, with Matilde Bernardi and Candida Nieri.
Gabriele Portoghese
A graduate of the Accademia Silvio D'Amico, Portoghese began under Carlo Cecchi and has worked with, among others, Andrea Baracco, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, Valerio Binasco, Ferdinando Bruni, Fabio Condemi, Daria Deflorian, Giorgina Pi and Bisordi himself. In 2019 he was Hamlet for Valerio Binasco and co-wrote with Condemi the dramaturgy of Questo è il tempo in cui attendo la grazia. In 2020 he played in Tiresias from Kae Tempest directed by Giorgina Pi, a show that won three Premi Ubu, and in 2024 he was on stage in Daria Deflorian's La vegetariana, from Han Kang's novel. He won the Premio Stampa Siracusa in 2017 and, in 2021, the Premio Ubu for best performer, the Premio Ivo Chiesa and the Premio Mariangela Melato.
Portoghese as author
Alongside acting, Portoghese writes and directs: with Giorgina Pi he created Guida Immaginaria, for which he also composed some music with Cristiano De Fabritiis. With Federica Rosellini he directed in 2023 the reading Orgia by Pier Paolo Pasolini. For the University of Bologna he developed X Elettra from Sophocles. For the Termini project by Daria Deflorian, Muta Imago and Antonio Tagliarini he conceived and wrote Preghierine.
Federica Rosellini
Born in 1989, Rosellini studied singing and violin, graduated from the Scuola del Piccolo Teatro di Milano in 2011 and trained with Thomas Ostermeier and Antonio Latella. A performer, director and playwright, she has also specialized in dance and illustration. On stage she has worked with Luca Ronconi, Latella, Andrea De Rosa and Gabriele Russo, playing both male and female roles. She has won two Premi Ubu for best actress under 35, the Premio Hystrio and the Premio Virginia Reiter. She was an Associate Artist of the Piccolo Teatro from 2021 to 2024.
Rosellini on screen
She made her film debut with Alice Rohrwacher. As the lead in Dove cadono le ombre she won the Nuova IMAIE Talent Award at the Venice Film Festival. She starred in Daniele Luchetti's Confidenza, in 2024, and in Gianni Amelio's Campo di battaglia, in competition at Venice 81. In 2023 a portrait of her was shown at MAXXI in Rome in the exhibition Straordinarie. Protagoniste del presente. Her Carne blu won the 2022 Premio Ubu for best set design. Her recent works as a director include Freaks, inspired by Tod Browning's film, and HildeKurt, about Hildegard von Bingen and Kurt Cobain.
Matilde Bernardi and Candida Nieri
Matilde Bernardi and Candida Nieri complete the cast. The show's official pages don't publish their biographies, and the roles assigned to the four performers among Don Luca, Marta, Folker and the other figures in the story aren't given.
Teatro Vascello, Monteverde's experimental hall
Teatro Vascello was inaugurated on May 4, 1989 by Giancarlo Nanni and Manuela Kustermann with the company La Fabbrica dell'Attore, and opened with Qui non ci torno più by Tadeusz Kantor and the Cricot Theater of Warsaw.
The roots at Teatro La Fede
The company's history begins in the 1970s with the group Space Re[v]action and its first permanent home at Teatro La Fede, on Via Portuense. Around Nanni and Kustermann a group formed that ranged across theater, film, dance, music and visual arts, with shows such as A come Alice and Spring Awakening, linked to the so-called scuola romana, a theater that put image before word. Steve Lacy, John Cage and the Living Theatre passed through La Fede.
From 1989 to today
After Kantor, the Vascello welcomed Raul Ruiz, the Centro di Pontedera, Teatri Uniti, Moni Ovadia, Carlo Cecchi, Barberio Corsetti, the Societas Raffaello Sanzio, Teatro Valdoca and Pippo Delbono. Since 1998 the Ministry has recognized La Fabbrica dell'Attore as a Teatro Stabile d'Innovazione, and in 2004 the Sala Studio opened. After Giancarlo Nanni's death, in January 2010, Manuela Kustermann has been sole artistic director.
The link with Romaeuropa
For over 20 years the Fondazione Romaeuropa has presented part of its festival at the Vascello. Il Prodigio fits into this collaboration even more closely: it isn't a festival guest, it's a production of the theater, co-produced by the festival, which premieres on the Romaeuropa dates and continues in the hall's season.
Monteverde Vecchio around Teatro Vascello
Via Giacinto Carini is in the Monteverde Vecchio neighborhood, the upper, residential part of Monteverde above Trastevere, between the Janiculum and the great historic villas.
The Janiculum and the Fontanone
From the theater the Janiculum is a few minutes away: a walk on the hill, with its view over the city, is the best way to prepare for an afternoon performance. Along the way you pass the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, the Fontanone, and lower down San Pietro in Montorio.
Villa Sciarra and Villa Pamphilj
A short distance away are Villa Sciarra, small and intimate, and Villa Doria Pamphilj, the large park west of the neighborhood. In November the gates close early: check the hours before planning a walk.
Trastevere below the hill
Going down from Monteverde you reach Trastevere, with the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. It's the area to go to for dinner after the Saturday 19:00 performances.
Getting to Teatro Vascello for Il Prodigio
Teatro Vascello is at Via Giacinto Carini 78, in Monteverde Vecchio. The theater lists bus 75, which stops in front of the entrance, and lines 44, 710, 870 and 871.
By bus
The 75 links the theater with Termini, the Colosseum and Piramide. The other lines listed by the theater are useful depending on where you start from. For evening runs, especially for the trip back after the 21:00 performances, the ATAC journey planner is the most reliable tool.
By train
From Ostiense station, on the commuter train, get off at Quattro Venti station, on Viale dei Quattro Venti, a short distance from the theater.
By car and parking
The theater mentions parking along Via delle Mura Gianicolensi, about 100 meters away, and some paid garages: at Via Giacinto Carini 43, at Via Maurizio Quadrio 22, affiliated with the theater with a discount on showing your ticket, and at Via Raffaello Giovagnoli 20.
On foot from Trastevere
From Trastevere you can walk up to Monteverde, along the streets that lead toward the Janiculum. It's an uphill walk, to be done in comfortable shoes and with plenty of time, pleasant before the Sunday afternoon performance.
Tickets for Il Prodigio at Teatro Vascello
A ticket for Il Prodigio costs 25 euros according to the Romaeuropa Festival page, and is bought through two separate channels for the festival dates and the season dates.
Two purchases, two pages
On the Vascello website there are two buttons: online purchase for November 13, 14 and 15, online purchase for November 17 to 22. The same distinction appears on the Romaeuropa Festival page. So if you choose a date, make sure you use the right channel: the first three performances are handled as festival dates, the others as dates of the theater's season.
Passepartout and subscriptions
The Romaeuropa Festival includes the show in its Passepartout pass. The Vascello, for its part, offers its subscription formulas for the 2026/2027 season: if you already have a card or a pass, check which dates it covers.
Premiere or later performances
The November 13 premiere has the appeal of an opening night and the talk with the artists afterward. The following week's performances are usually quieter, with the show already broken in. In our view the choice depends on what you're looking for: the event or the more relaxed viewing.
How to plan the Il Prodigio evening
Il Prodigio at Teatro Vascello has three time slots, 21:00 on weekdays and Friday, 19:00 on Saturday, 17:00 on Sunday, and each leads to a different evening.
The 21:00 performances
From Tuesday to Friday at 21:00, you have dinner beforehand, early, or afterward. The Vascello has an in-house bistro, useful for a coffee or a snack before going in. The show's length isn't published: if you need to catch the last bus or train, ask the theater.
Saturday at 19:00
The 19:00 performance is the most convenient if you want to eat out after the show. Head down to Trastevere, where the choice of trattorias and osterias is wide and open late. On Saturday night it's best to book.
Sunday at 17:00
Sunday afternoon lends itself to a day on the Janiculum: a walk on the hill in the early hours, theater at 17:00, an early dinner in Monteverde or Trastevere.
Where to eat nearby
Monteverde has neighborhood trattorias and pizzerias frequented mostly by residents, with fairer prices than Trastevere. They're the right choice after the 21:00 performances, when you don't feel like going far.
Accessibility, age and practical information
Teatro Vascello publishes on its website a section devoted to accessibility, to check before buying for entrances, reserved seats and services.
With teens
Il Prodigio deals with themes like faith, fanaticism, the power of charisma and collective manipulation, with a stage language made of images and apparitions. No recommended age is given. For high school students interested in contemporary theater it's a stimulating title, to discuss afterward.
Punctuality
In a show built on images, collapses and apparitions, light and darkness are part of the dramaturgy: coming in late disturbs everyone. The evening bus can take a long time, so it's better to leave with a margin.
A curious fact about Il Prodigio at Teatro Vascello, November 13 to 22, 2026
The first curious fact about Il Prodigio concerns the pairing of Portoghese and Rosellini. The two actors, whom the show brings together on stage, had already worked together in a role other than performers: in 2023 they co-directed the reading Orgia by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Finding them now side by side, under the direction of a third person, means watching two directors act, two actors used to thinking of a show as a whole. The second curious fact concerns the director. Before earning his directing diploma at the Accademia Silvio D'Amico in 2012, Giacomo Bisordi graduated in Biomolecular Sciences and Technologies. A director with a scientific background staging a story of apparitions and miracles, in which the doubt between projection, deception and divine manifestation remains open, is a meeting that promises a rigorous look at the inexplicable. The third curious fact is one of theater geography. Bisordi coordinates the dramaturgy at NTGent, the theater in Ghent. In the same season the Vascello hosts Tiago Rodrigues's No Yogurt for the Dead with NTGent. A few weeks apart, the Monteverde hall welcomes Flemish theater twice, once as a guest and once as its own director's home base.
Something nobody tells you about Il Prodigio at Teatro Vascello, November 13 to 22, 2026
Nobody says it, but Il Prodigio has two box offices. The performances on November 13, 14 and 15 are Romaeuropa Festival dates, those from November 17 to 22 are Vascello season dates, and the theater provides two different buy buttons. If you buy in a hurry you risk looking for the right date in the wrong channel. If you have a festival or season subscription, check which period it covers. The second thing nobody says concerns the times. On Saturday the performance is at 19:00, not 21:00: it's the time the Vascello uses for Saturday, designed for those who want dinner afterward. If you're used to prime-time starts, you risk finding the show already under way. The third concerns the cast. The festival and theater pages don't fully match: the theater lists four performers, Matilde Bernardi, Candida Nieri, Gabriele Portoghese and Federica Rosellini, while the festival's presentation text names Portoghese, Rosellini and Bernardi on stage, while listing Candida Nieri among the performers at the top of the page. The sources disagree on the detail. If you're going for a particular actor, the reference is the house program. The fourth, finally, is that the Vascello is in a residential neighborhood: after the theater things are quiet, and it's best to know the last bus beforehand.
My advice for attending Il Prodigio at Teatro Vascello, November 13 to 22, 2026
My advice for Il Prodigio at Teatro Vascello is to choose based on what you're looking for. If you love an opening night and want to hear the director and the novel's author live, go to the Italian premiere on Friday, November 13 at 21:00: the festival announces the talk with Giacomo Bisordi and Fabrizio Sinisi afterward, with Rai Radio 3. If instead you prefer a show already broken in, choose a weekday performance, Tuesday the 17th to Friday the 20th, when the audience is the Vascello's most passionate. If you want to make the performance a day out, Sunday the 22nd at 17:00 is ideal: go up the Janiculum in the early afternoon, come down toward Monteverde by way of the Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, and enter the theater as the light fades. Either way, arrive on the 75, which stops in front of the theater, or by train to Quattro Venti, not by car. One last tip: don't try to solve the enigma of the face in the sky. The show is built as a revelation that withholds itself, and the final question, what do we choose to believe, is addressed to those watching. You come out wanting to discuss it: Trastevere, a few minutes away, has the right tables for that.
Another well-known fact, yet one that is rarely mentioned
It's well known that Teatro Vascello is one of the Roman halls most tied to experimentation. It's less often mentioned that its history began with one of the most radical gestures of European theater. On May 4, 1989 the Monteverde hall opened with Qui non ci torno più by Tadeusz Kantor and his Cricot Theater of Warsaw: a statement of intent. Since that day the Vascello has hosted Peter Brook, who presented Samuel Beckett's Happy Days with Natasha Parry there, and Bob Wilson. In 1998 it co-produced a show with the Berliner Ensemble. The same year, 1998, the Ministry recognized La Fabbrica dell'Attore as a Teatro Stabile d'Innovazione. A second rarely remembered fact concerns the founder: in spring 2001 Giancarlo Nanni was the first Italian invited to work and teach at the Actors Studio in New York, for a special five-month session. The third fact is the most recent and concerns Il Prodigio: for the first time this season the Vascello isn't just the hall hosting the festival, it's the producer of the show, with the Romaeuropa Festival and LAC Lugano as co-producers. The theater that in 1989 hosted the European avant-garde in 2026 produces, with an international partner like LAC Lugano.
The right photo to take at Il Prodigio at Teatro Vascello, November 13 to 22, 2026
The right photo of an evening at Il Prodigio at Teatro Vascello is of the sky. The show starts from a face appearing in the sky of a large Italian city, and Rome, seen from the Janiculum a few minutes from the theater, is the large city to photograph before going in. The best spot is the terrace on the hill, with the roofs and domes of the historic center below, at sunset: in mid-November the sun sets early, and it's the time to shoot before the Sunday performance. Look for your own face in the clouds, like the characters in the novel: the photo also works as a little game with the show. The second photo is taken in front of the theater, on Via Giacinto Carini, with the Vascello sign and the show poster, the illustration of a face looking upward, surrounded by golden circles. The third is of the house program, to keep: for an Italian premiere it's a document. In the hall, during the show, no photos: in a staging built on images and apparitions, a lit phone screen breaks the spell for everyone.
Some important events that happened here in history
Teatro Vascello's history is short if measured in years, dense if measured in events. On May 4, 1989 the hall opened with Tadeusz Kantor and the Cricot Theater of Warsaw. In the early 1990s came Raul Ruiz, the Centro di Pontedera, American and French contemporary dance, and Italian experimental groups. In May 1996 the Extraordinario series presented 16 young experimental companies from all over Italy. In 1998 La Fabbrica dell'Attore became a Teatro Stabile d'Innovazione and the Vascello co-produced a show with the Berliner Ensemble. In 2001 Giancarlo Nanni taught at the Actors Studio in New York. In 2003 the Premio Valentino Zeichen, devoted to poetry, was born, and in 2004 the Sala Studio opened in the basement. In January 2010 Nanni died and direction passed entirely to Manuela Kustermann, who still holds it today. The theater keeps a library and video library with more than 3,000 books, magazines, scripts and texts, as well as the historic video archive. For over 20 years the Romaeuropa Festival has brought part of its program to the Vascello. In autumn 2026 the hall hosts titles such as Alessandro Serra's Tragudia and produces Il Prodigio, which has its Italian premiere on November 13.
Who has passed through Il Prodigio at Teatro Vascello, November 13 to 22, 2026
On the Vascello's stage and, even earlier, in the history of the company that founded it, some of the most important names in contemporary theater have passed through. At Teatro La Fede, its first home in the 1970s, came Steve Lacy, John Cage, Gérard Gelas and the Living Theatre, and Memè Perlini and Giuliano Vasilicò emerged from the group. At the Vascello, since 1989, have come Tadeusz Kantor, Raul Ruiz, Teatri Uniti, Moni Ovadia, Carlo Cecchi, Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, the Societas Raffaello Sanzio, Teatro Valdoca, Pippo Delbono, and for dance Enzo Cosimi, Virgilio Sieni and Wim Vandekeybus, and among the international masters Bob Wilson and Peter Brook. Manuela Kustermann, actress and artistic director, is the constant presence in this story. With Il Prodigio come names that many of those masters helped train: Gabriele Portoghese, who started with Carlo Cecchi and worked with Barberio Corsetti, two artists at home at the Vascello, Federica Rosellini, trained by Ostermeier and Latella and directed by Luca Ronconi, Giacomo Bisordi, Milo Rau's dramaturg, and Fabrizio Sinisi, playwright and novelist. In the same season Giorgina Pi with Lemnos and Elio De Capitani have passed through here: Portoghese owes to Giorgina Pi the Tiresias that won three Ubus.

Final advice on Il Prodigio
Il Prodigio is, in our view, one of the most awaited Italian titles of the Roman autumn: an award-winning novel, a director who has worked for years in European political theater, two much-awarded actors and a hall that for 37 years has been the home of experimental theater in Rome. The advice is to choose the November 13 premiere for the talk with the artists, or a weekday performance to see it calmly, to buy from the right channel and to arrive on the 75. And to come out with a question, the show's own: what do we choose to believe?
