The protagonist of «The Best Offer» is Virgil Oldman, a cultured and solitary antiques dealer, reserved with others and especially with women, but obsessive about his trade. On his sixty-third birthday he gets a phone call from a young woman who asks him to dispose of some of her family's works of art.

She does not show up for the first inspection, and for various reasons she does not appear during the inventory, the transport or the restoration of the works either. Locked in a world of obsessions, the mysterious woman persuades him each time to retrace his steps, and the dealer begins a completely unpredictable experience.
