The program pairs the two films with which Buñuel opened his surrealist period. «Un chien andalou», from 1929, was born from his collaboration with Salvador Dalí and gives up a rational plot: it proceeds by free association, dreams and images that aim to shake up the viewer's perceptual habits. The cast includes Pierre Batcheff and Simone Mareuil.
It's followed by «L'âge d'or», from 1930, the director's first feature film, 75 minutes long. The film, with Lya Lys and Gaston Modot, uses incongruous juxtapositions and black humor to attack bourgeois morality, religion and institutions. Financed by the Vicomte and Vicomtesse de Noailles, it caused strong protests at Studio 28 in Paris in 1930 and was withdrawn from circulation shortly afterward.
The two screenings, both in the original version with Italian subtitles, are part of a series held in Sala Cinecittà and Sala Fellini. The official page doesn't specify which of the two hosts each date. The November 9 screening is listed as dog friendly.
Where it takes place: Casa del Cinema
Casa del Cinema occupies the Casina delle Rose, inside Villa Borghese, and opened on September 18, 2004, after a long restoration of the city-owned building, which had been abandoned for about 25 years. Since February 2023 it has been run by Fondazione Cinema per Roma.
The screening halls are Sala Cinecittà, with 118 seats, Sala Fellini, with 65, and Sala Gian Maria Volonté, with 46. In the summer months there's also the open-air theater dedicated to Ettore Scola. Among the venue's other events, you can read our page on Parajanov's Sayat Nova and the one on the AS Film Festival.
