Official presentation of Ensayo de un crimen
«una sublime commedia nera sulle fantasie maschili di potere»
Text from the official Cultura Roma Capitale page (service translation: “a sublime black comedy about male fantasies of power”), source
The film is Mexican, dates from 1955 and runs 89 minutes. The cast includes Ernesto Alonso, Miroslava Stern, Ariadna Welter, Rita Macedo, Andrea Palma and Rodolfo Landa. It is based on a novel by Rodolfo Usigli.
Archibaldo de la Cruz has been convinced since childhood that he has a mysterious power to kill: when he wishes someone dead, chance seems to get there first. As an adult he fantasizes about becoming the perfect murderer, but the women he would like to kill always die from causes that have nothing to do with him.
The official text reads the film as a black comedy about power, eroticism, fetishism and the relation between desire and guilt. The would-be serial killer is above all a failed criminal, condemned to stare at the gap between imagination and action. With music boxes, mannequins and childish impulses, the text calls it one of the director's most macabre and perfect films, which he himself described as a «joke».
The venue's calendar marks the November 13 screening as Dog Friendly.
