Official presentation of That Obscure Object of Desire
«la formulazione più estrema»

The film, released in 1977 and produced in France, runs 100 minutes. The cast includes Fernando Rey, Carole Bouquet, Ángela Molina, Julien Bertheau, André Weber and Milena Vukotic. As the presentation recalls, it is Buñuel's last feature film, based on «La femme et le pantin» (“The Woman and the Puppet”) by Pierre Louÿs.
The story takes place largely during a train journey: the wealthy Mathieu tells his fellow passengers about his tormented relationship with the young Conchita, who promises to give herself and then rejects him. The director gives the role to two actresses, Carole Bouquet and Ángela Molina, who alternate without explanation, so that the Obscure Object of Desire stays without a fixed identity.
In the background, bombings and violence enter everyday life with growing ease. The presentation reads the work as an erotic comedy, a fable about the impossibility of possession and an ironic summary of the director's universe, with a moral summed up this way: desire lives as long as something resists it.
That Obscure Object of Desire is part of the series «Luis Buñuel: lo sguardo tagliente» (“Luis Buñuel: The Sharp Gaze”), which fills the month of November.
