Official presentation of Nazarin
«una delle sue riflessioni più profonde e ambigue sulla fede»
Text from the official Cultura Roma Capitale page (service translation: “one of his deepest and most ambiguous reflections on faith”), source
The protagonist of «Nazarin», Father Nazario, tries to live Christianity in the most literal way: he gives up his possessions, takes in prostitutes and outcasts, forgives those who rob him and endures humiliation and violence without rebelling. Yet each act of charity seems to have unexpected and often disastrous consequences.
Buñuel starts from the novel by Benito Pérez Galdós and draws from it a confrontation between the absoluteness of the Gospel message and a world unable to welcome it, more than a simple anticlerical satire. In the film the priest is at once a saint, naive and an involuntary provoker, and his very goodness can turn into a form of pride.
«Nazarin» dates from 1959, is a Mexican production and runs 94 minutes. The cast includes Francisco Rabal, Marga López, Rita Macedo, Jesús Fernández, Ignacio López Tarso, Ofelia Guilmáin, Luis Aceves Castañeda and Rosenda Monteros. The venue marks the Sunday, November 29 screening as «dog friendly».
