Official presentation of Tenor Madness
«Saxophone Colossus»
Text from the official Cultura Roma Capitale page, source
The Roma Jazz Festival dedicates the evening to Sonny Rollins, called «Saxophone Colossus» in the presentation, recalling the saxophonist's ties with the city. The title «Tenor Madness» recalls the famous album named after the piece Rollins recorded with Coltrane.
The presentation lists some of Rollins's Rome concerts. He played at Teatro dell'Opera on October 28, 1981, in a lineup with drummer Tony Williams (a recording later remastered), and on the same stage on October 13, 2002.
He also played at the Auditorium in May 2006 and on November 11, 2009. The latter was for the Roma Jazz Festival and is remembered as one of the most important concerts in the festival's fifty-year history.
On stage is the CDJO, Casa del Jazz Orchestra, the new resident orchestra of the Casa del Jazz and an original production of the Jazz Music Production Center of Fondazione Musica per Roma. Conducted by Mario Corvini, it aims to showcase younger musicians through the great orchestral repertoire, from the swing idiom to twentieth-century scores, with philological respect and contemporary sensibility. The guest is Javier Girotto on saxophone.
Where Tenor Madness takes place: Auditorium Parco della Musica, Sala Petrassi
Despite the orchestra's name, the evening is not held at the Casa del Jazz but in Sala Petrassi at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, the complex by Renzo Piano that has borne the name of Ennio Morricone since 2020. The hall has 673 seats.
