Il Volo at Palazzo dello Sport in Rome, December 17, 2026
Il Volo sings in Rome on Thursday, December 17, 2026 at 21:00 at Palazzo dello Sport, Piazzale Pier Luigi Nervi 1, 00144 Rome, in the EUR district, the only Roman date of the Live in the arenas 2026, the Italian December leg of the 2026/2027 World Tour of Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble. You get there by metro line B, getting off at EUR Palasport or EUR Fermi station, both a few minutes' walk from the arena. Prices are published by the authorized reseller indicated by the organization. Tickets are bought on the presale network authorized by the organization, reachable from the official tour page on the Friends & Partners site, where special packages also appear for the Rome date. The door opening time is given on the ticket: it's best to check it close to the date.
Il Volo in Rome on December 17, 2026: what kind of evening it is
The December 17, 2026 concert at Palazzo dello Sport is the third of the five Italian arena dates with which Il Volo closes the year, and the only one south of Florence. After Milan and Florence, and before Turin and Bologna, Rome receives the trio eight days before Christmas. For those who live in the center and south of the country it is the nearest appointment, and that alone explains why, for one evening, the EUR arena becomes the meeting point of families who have come from half of Italy.

A date within the Live in the arenas 2026
The promoter's releases call this cycle of concerts Live in the arenas 2026 and place it within the wider World Tour 2026/2027, the tour that between 2026 and 2027 takes the trio to Italy, Spain, central and eastern Europe and as far as London and Stockholm. The Roman evening is therefore one piece of a two-year project, and the fact that the indoor Italian dates are only five makes it more precious than it seems: the bulk of the calendar, after December, moves abroad.
Thursday evening, at 21:00
The official calendar gives for Thursday, December 17, 2026 a start at 21:00. It's a December Thursday, with the city already dressed for the holidays and the traffic of the pre-Christmas weeks: those who work must calculate the trip with margin, and those who come from outside Rome would do well to consider a night in the city. I talk about it later, because it's the real difference between a pleasant evening and a race against time.
Who produces the tour
The Italian December leg is produced by MT Opera & Blues and by Friends & Partners, the same production pair that in recent years has handled the trio's European tours and the event concerts of Tutti per uno. It's a detail that matters for the spectator: it indicates a well-oiled organizational machine, with a single official communication to refer to for times, changes and access information.
Il Volo's World Tour 2026/2027: where the Rome date sits
Il Volo's World Tour 2026/2027 includes a long Italian summer in 2026, five arenas in December 2026 and dozens of European dates in 2027, from Bulgaria to Sweden. Looking at it in full helps to understand what you are going to hear on December 17: a show the trio has been carrying around for months, honed in front of very different audiences.
The five December dates
The tour in Italian arenas starts on December 7, 2026 in Milan, at the Unipol Forum. It continues on December 12 in Florence, at the Nelson Mandela Forum. It arrives on December 17 in Rome, at Palazzo dello Sport. It stops on December 19 in Turin, at the Inalpi Arena, and ends on December 20 in Bologna, at the Unipol Arena. All the dates are given with a start at 21:00. Rome falls in the middle, at the point when a show has already found its pace and doesn't yet have the tiredness of the last night.
The 2026 Italian summer and Tutti per uno in Mantua
Before December, the trio's 2026 has been packed. In March Latin America, with dates in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. In April the United States. Then the Italian open-air summer, announced to start on July 1 from Marostica, and an itinerary of squares, castles and ancient theaters: Pistoia, Asti, Vigevano, the Greek Theater in Syracuse, Cernobbio, Cattolica, Este, Villa Manin in Codroipo, Forte dei Marmi, Barletta, Alghero, the Ancient Theater of Taormina on August 22, Lanciano, the Sferisterio in Macerata, Piazza della Loggia in Brescia and the Reggia di Caserta on September 8. In between, a Spanish date in Barcelona. At the end of September the fourth edition of Tutti per uno, on September 24, 26 and 27, 2026 at Palazzo Te, in Mantua.
After Rome: 2027 in Europe
Once Bologna is closed, the official calendar jumps to 2027: two evenings at the Ancient Theater of Plovdiv on July 1 and 2, then Berlin outdoors on the Gendarmenmarkt, Regensburg, Bremen. In autumn Riga, Ljubljana, Brussels, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Łódź, Budapest, Prague, Frankfurt, Bratislava, Zurich, Madrid, Porto, Valencia, Munich, Vienna, London at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith and finally Stockholm on November 7, 2027. Seen from here, the Roman concert is the last chance in a good year to hear the trio in an Italian arena.
Who Il Volo are: Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble
Il Volo is the trio formed by Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble, born in 2009 from the RAI 1 program Ti lascio una canzone, in which the three took part as individual contestants. It is the starting point of one of the most international Italian careers of the last 15 years, built more abroad than at home, at least in the early days.
Ti lascio una canzone, 2009
The official biography distributed by the promoter is clear on a point many forget: Barone, Boschetto and Ginoble did not appear on television as a group. They came to RAI 1's Saturday-night talent show each on their own, and it was there that the three voices were noticed. The trio was born, then, from an intuition, not from a childhood friendship, and the friendship came afterward, to the point that in 2024 the releases spoke of 15 years of music and friendship together.
Michele Torpedine and Geffen Records
The one who noticed them was Michele Torpedine, the manager who, according to the same biography, built the careers of Andrea Bocelli, Zucchero, Giorgia and Biagio Antonacci. Torpedine chose an international road for them from the start, betting on each one's vocal gifts and on the effect of the trio. In a very short time the three became the first Italian artists to sign a contract with an American major, Geffen Records. It's a fact that explains much of their path: first they made themselves known in the United States, then they came back to win in Italy.
Three voices and a genre
The genre they are associated with is lyric pop, that border zone between song and melodrama that in the United States the charts call classical crossover. In our judgment the key isn't power, which is not lacking, but alternation: three different timbres that pass the melody to each other, overlap in the chorus, separate again. In an arena this game works better than on television, because the hall gives back the space between one voice and another.
Il Volo's career: from the United States to the Sanremo Festival
Between 2010 and 2015 Il Volo went from the first album with Geffen to winning the 2015 Sanremo Festival with Grande Amore and first place in the televote of that year's Eurovision Song Contest. These are five years in which the trio accumulated experiences other Italian artists don't collect in a lifetime.
The first record and We Are The World for Haiti
The debut album, titled simply Il Volo, came out in 2010, earned platinum certification and entered the Billboard top 10 in the United States. The same year the Special Christmas Edition reached a million copies, the first international tour began and the trio's first television special aired. Also in 2010 the three were the only Italian artists invited by Quincy Jones to We Are The World for Haiti, alongside 80 international names including Celine Dion, Bono, Lady Gaga, Carlos Santana and Barbra Streisand. They appeared on programs such as the Tonight Show, American Idol and Good Morning America: for an American audience, Il Volo is Italian even before being famous in Italy.
Streisand, Domingo and Radio City
In 2012 the trio supported Barbra Streisand on a tour of 12 concerts across the United States and Canada. The same year the second album came out, We Are Love, with duets with Placido Domingo and Eros Ramazzotti. In 2013 sales opened for the first concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York: the biography reports 1,600 tickets sold in eight hours and a sellout within a few days, and from there a tour of 50 dates across the United States, Canada, Central and South America. Also in 2013 came the third studio album, Buon Natale, The Christmas Album, released worldwide, and the trio took part in the Christmas Concert in the Upper Basilica of Assisi broadcast by RAI 1. In 2014 they received in Miami the Latin Billboard Award for best Latin album duo or group, in their career they also count two Latin Grammy nominations.
Sanremo and Eurovision, 2015
2015 is the year of the triumph at home. Il Volo wins the Sanremo Festival with Grande Amore, and the EP Sanremo Grande Amore, which reinterprets famous songs from the Festival's history, reaches the top of the charts together with the single. According to the official biography the EP is certified double platinum and the single platinum. The trio then represents Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest 2015, finishes first in the televote and receives the Marcel Bezençon award of the international press. In the same period the fourth studio album, L'amore si muove, comes out in 45 countries, and Rizzoli publishes their book Un'avventura straordinaria. The Italian tour of that summer passes through Pompeii, with a concert recorded by the American network PBS, and ends on September 21 at the Arena di Verona live on RAI 1.
Notte magica and the Three Tenors
Between 2016 and 2017 the trio devotes itself to Notte magica, a tribute to the 1990 concert of the Three Tenors, José Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. The setting is Piazza Santa Croce in Florence, with Domingo on stage and a prime-time live broadcast on Canale 5. The show is also aired by PBS in the United States and screened in more than 500 movie theaters. The CD and the DVD of the concert reach their fourth platinum record in Italy, and the tour that follows counts in 2017 15 dates in the United States and about 25 in Italy. This is where the project becomes clear: a repertoire that looks back to the great tenors, but sung by three young men who aren't 30 yet.
Il Volo from 2018 to today: Morricone, Ad Astra and the Tutti per uno concerts
Since 2018 Il Volo has alternated major television events, an album devoted to Ennio Morricone, the first album of original songs Ad Astra in 2024 and the series of event concerts Tutti per uno. Today's trio is a mature group, with a good 15 years of stage behind it and an audience that has grown up with it.
Lebanon, Panama and 10 years of career
In 2018 the trio plays in Japan and Eastern Europe, and in December it spends a few days at the UNIFIL base in Tyre, Lebanon, with the Italian soldiers on a peace mission. The Christmas concert, from the Shama base and the Tyre Theater, airs on RAI 1 on December 25. On January 26, 2019 it sings in Panama for World Youth Day, in front of Pope Francis and, according to the biography, more than a million people. 2019 is the tenth-anniversary year: third place at Sanremo with Musica che resta, written among others by Gianna Nannini, the album Musica on February 22 and, on November 8, the compilation 10 Years, with the DVD Live in Matera. In March 2020 the pandemic interrupts the world tour and forces the trio to return from the United States.
Il Volo Sings Morricone
The halt in concerts becomes a time of study on the repertoire of Ennio Morricone. On November 1, 2020 the trio sings the Italian national anthem to open the Emilia Romagna Formula 1 Grand Prix. In 2021 it is a guest at Sanremo with a tribute to the Maestro, and on June 5, 2021 IL VOLO, Tributo a Ennio Morricone, from the Arena di Verona, airs in prime time on RAI 1, with 4,702,000 viewers and a 25.8 percent share. In the fall comes the single Ecstasy of Gold, from the theme of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, with English lyrics written for them by Andrea Morricone, and on November 5, 2021 the album Il Volo Sings Morricone for Epic and Sony Music. They spend Christmas 2022 in Jerusalem: the concert from the Tower of David airs on Canale 5 on December 24.
Ad Astra and Capolavoro
On March 29, 2024 Ad Astra comes out, which the promoter presents as the trio's first album of original songs. It contains Capolavoro, the song brought to Sanremo 2024. An international version follows, Ad Astra International Edition, enriched with five new tracks including the English version of Capolavoro. On December 6, 2024 the single Tra le onde comes out, written by Stefano Marletta and Michael Tenisci and produced by Tenisci and by E.D.D.: piano, then the strings, then the three voices intertwining in the chorus. A few days earlier, on December 8, 2024, the trio is a special guest of Andrea Bocelli at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, where it sings Il Gladiatore and, together with the tenor, O sole mio.
The Tutti per uno format
The Tutti per uno format of event concerts was conceived by Michele Torpedine and is produced by Friends & Partners. The first edition takes place at the Arena di Verona on May 1 and 3, 2023, with orchestra. The second, also at the Arena, airs on Canale 5 on May 14, 21 and 28, 2024, with guests such as Giorgia, Claudio Baglioni, Francesco De Gregori, Alessandra Amoroso and Roberto Vecchioni. From 2025 the format moves to Palazzo Te in Mantua: the third edition, Viaggio nel tempo, on May 8, 10 and 11, 2025, the only Italian concerts of that year, and the fourth on September 24, 26 and 27, 2026. Those who go to Palazzo dello Sport in December will therefore hear a trio that has just closed one of its most important weeks of the year.
What you hear at an Il Volo concert at Palazzo dello Sport
An Il Volo concert mixes the trio's own songs, from Grande Amore to Capolavoro, with the classical and popular repertoire that made it famous around the world, from Morricone to Neapolitan song. Whoever is in the hall will learn the setlist of the Roman evening. The trio doesn't publish it in advance, and every tour has its own design.
The songs to know beforehand
Those who want to arrive prepared have a short and safe list: Grande Amore, the song that won Sanremo in 2015. Musica che resta, third at the 2019 Festival. Capolavoro, brought to Sanremo in 2024. Tra le onde, the single of December 2024. Alongside these, the repertoire with which the trio presents itself to the world: the Morricone pages gathered in Il Volo Sings Morricone, the theme of Il Gladiatore, O sole mio. It isn't a prediction of the setlist, it's a map of their fixed points.
Christmas in the repertoire
The trio has a long familiarity with Christmas: the Special Christmas Edition of 2010, the album Buon Natale of 2013, the Christmas Concert in Assisi, the concert from Lebanon in 2018, the one from Jerusalem in 2022. A Roman concert on December 17 falls right in the season. Nobody can know beforehand if a Christmas piece will enter the setlist, but the calendar coincidence is evident, and the December audience tends to want it.
Three voices that take turns
The form of the concert, in the recent editions of Tutti per uno described by the promoter, alternates solo moments, group moments and moments with guests. In an arena the guests aren't announced, but the framework of three voices handing the stage to each other remains. The advice to the listener is to follow precisely that: who takes the first verse, who comes in on the chorus, who closes on the long note. That's where the trio shows its craft.
The audience
The Il Volo audience is cross-generational like few others: grandparents who discovered them with Sanremo 2015, parents who have followed them since Notte magica, children who grew up with the Christmas live broadcasts on television. It isn't the audience of a rock concert, and the hall reflects it: people listen, applaud at the end of a song, stand up for the best-known pieces. Those who bring children will find many other families.
Il Volo and Rome: Palazzo Madama, Caracalla and EUR
Il Volo has a relationship with Rome made of institutional and monumental places: it has sung in the Senate chamber at Palazzo Madama, opened its 2024 summer tour at Caracalla and on January 21, 2025 already played at Palazzo dello Sport. The December date is a return, not a debut.
A December 21 in the Senate
In the years of its first international successes, on a December 21, the trio sings in a charity concert in the chamber of the Senate of the Republic, at Palazzo Madama, live on RAI 1 after the Angelus of Pope Francis. It is one of those occasions that carry a particular weight in Rome: the chamber where laws are voted turned for an hour into a concert hall, a few days before Christmas. The coincidence with the 2026 date, also in the middle of the pre-Christmas week, is curious and has its own sense.
Caracalla, June 2024
The summer tour Tutti per uno, Capolavoro, 20 dates between June and September 2024, starts on June 8 from Rome, at the Baths of Caracalla. For a trio that sings the repertoire of the great tenors, opening a summer tour under the ruins of the imperial baths has an evident symbolic value: the lyric voice and the ancient, placed side by side, are exactly the image the trio carries to the world. The rest of that summer passed through Piazza San Marco in Venice, Forte di Bard, the Amphitheater of the Excavations of Pompeii, the Reggia di Caserta.
Palazzo dello Sport, January 2025
On January 21, 2025 Il Volo brought to Palazzo dello Sport the tour Tutti per uno, Ad Astra, Live nei palasport, a round of 10 arenas between Jesolo and Messina. Those who were there already know how the trio uses this hall. Those who weren't can count on one fact: on December 17, 2026 Barone, Boschetto and Ginoble return to an arena they know, in front of a Roman audience that welcomed them less than two years earlier.
Palazzo dello Sport in Rome: the hall that hosts Il Volo
Palazzo dello Sport in Rome is at Piazzale Pier Luigi Nervi 1, in EUR, and was designed by Pier Luigi Nervi with Marcello Piacentini for the 1960 Rome Olympics. For the full history of the building I refer you to the page on Palazzo dello Sport. Here what matters is understanding what kind of hall it is on the night of a concert.
Nervi and Piacentini for the 1960 Olympics
Nervi is the engineer who in Italy turned reinforced concrete into an expressive material. Piacentini is the architect whose name is tied more than any other to EUR. Palazzo dello Sport brings the two signatures together for the event that was to show the world a rebuilt, modern Rome. The great circular roof you see when arriving from Via Cristoforo Colombo or from the lake is the image that stays. The square carries the name of the designer, the metro station the name of the building. Few places in the city declare their identity so clearly.
What kind of hall it is for an Il Volo concert
An arena isn't an opera house, and those who arrive expecting the acoustics of a lyric hall risk being disappointed. Here the sound comes through the amplification system, and the result depends a lot on the seat. For a repertoire of voices like the trio's, the preference goes to the front and side stands, where you see the whole stage and the sound arrives more orderly. The floor gives closeness, but on an evening like this the view of the full hall, seen from above, is part of the show.
Two addresses, one building
The box offices and the promoter use Piazzale Pier Luigi Nervi 1. In mapping databases the building also appears as Piazzale dello Sport 1, postal code 00144. It is the same complex, with coordinates around 41.825 latitude and 12.467 longitude. For your navigator, searching Palazzo dello Sport Roma takes you to the right place.
The December calendar
In December Il Volo isn't alone under Nervi's roof. The same week the arena hosts Irama on December 12 and ANNA on December 19: three audiences crossing within a few days of each other, which tell well the nature of the hall, able to go from lyric pop to rap without changing address.
How to get to Palazzo dello Sport for the Il Volo concert
The simplest way to reach Palazzo dello Sport is metro line B, getting off at EUR Palasport or EUR Fermi station. From both you walk to the arena in a few minutes.
By metro
Line B connects Termini to EUR without changes. Those starting from line A change at Termini. Once off at EUR Palasport or EUR Fermi, you can see the arena, and on a concert night the crowd shows the way. From the center allow a generous margin: on a December Thursday, between people coming home from work and Christmas shopping, the trains toward EUR fill up earlier than usual.
The way back
The problem with EUR concerts isn't getting there, it's getting back. Check on the ATAC site the time of the last metro run for that Thursday and compare it with the expected end of the concert. If the margin is tight, arrange an alternative beforehand, if a booked taxi or a ride. Night bus lines should be checked on the transport company's route planner.
By car
I advise against the car. EUR is well connected by Via Cristoforo Colombo, but on concert nights the streets around the arena clog up earlier and above all afterward, when thousands of people leave at once. In December the traffic of Christmas shopping adds to it. If you really must, park far from the square and plan for a walk. You get out of the jam sooner by walking 10 minutes than by staying in line for half an hour.
By taxi
At the exit taxis are scarce, and those who wait for them in front of the arena wait a long time. Those who want to go back by taxi do better to walk toward Via Cristoforo Colombo or toward one of the metro stations, away from most of the crowd, and call one from there. With older people in the group, it's best to decide the pickup point beforehand.
A curiosity about Il Volo at Palazzo dello Sport in Rome, December 17, 2026
One curiosity concerns the way Il Volo became Il Volo. Those who see them today, three men moving on stage with perfect chemistry, take for granted that they were born as a group. They weren't. In 2009 Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble appear on Ti lascio una canzone, on RAI 1, each as an individual contestant. Three boys, three backgrounds, three different voices. It is Michele Torpedine, the manager the official biography remembers for the careers of Andrea Bocelli, Zucchero, Giorgia and Biagio Antonacci, who sees a trio in those three voices and decides to launch it abroad right away.
From that intuition everything else follows: the contract with Geffen Records, the first for Italian artists with an American major. The 2010 debut album in the Billboard top 10. Quincy Jones's invitation to We Are The World for Haiti, the only Italians among 80 stars. Il Volo was famous in the United States before winning Sanremo, and this reversed order is rare in Italian music.
There is also a detail that links the curiosity to this date. Among the careers built by Torpedine the biography cites Giorgia's, and Giorgia took part in the first night of Tutti per uno at the Arena di Verona in 2024. On September 24, 2026 the same Giorgia sang right here, as the page on her concert at Palazzo dello Sport on September 24, 2026 recalls. The EUR arena thus ends up hosting, in the same fall, two careers born from the same stable. These are the small geometries that make a calendar interesting, and that the attentive spectator can enjoy noticing.
Something nobody tells you about Il Volo at Palazzo dello Sport in Rome, December 17, 2026
What nobody says openly is that an Il Volo concert in an arena asks the spectator to choose the seat with the head, not with the wallet. For such a beloved artist the temptation is to buy the ticket closest to the stage available. But the trio sings a repertoire of voices, and in an arena voices are heard best from a frontal and slightly raised position, where the system is designed to reach and where you see all three together, with the orchestra or the band behind them. From the side floor you risk seeing one well and guessing at the other two.
The second thing concerns the audience. Those who go to an Il Volo concert often go in a group: families of three generations, organized parties, friends who have followed the trio since Sanremo 2015. The groups arrive early, meet on the square and crowd the entrances in the last half hour before the start. It's better to do the opposite: go in as soon as the doors open, sit down calmly, let the hall fill up around you. With older people or children it's the difference between a serene evening and a queue in the cold of December.
The third thing is the day. December 17, 2026 is a Thursday, and the next day is a working day for almost everyone. Those who come from outside Rome and plan to go home the same evening should do the math carefully on the end of the concert, the exit from the arena and the transport schedules. For many the best choice is a night in the city, turning the concert into the first piece of a small pre-Christmas stay.
The advice I give you for visiting Il Volo at Palazzo dello Sport in Rome, December 17, 2026
The advice is this: make December 17 a whole Roman day, not just an evening out. Arrive in EUR in the early afternoon, when the December light is low and golden, and take a walk in the district before dark, which in mid-December comes early, shortly before 17:00. The EUR lake is a couple of steps from the arena. The Square Colosseum and Fuksas's Nuvola are reachable on a walk. Seeing the 20th-century architecture in which Palazzo dello Sport is immersed changes the way you look at the hall in the evening.
Then have dinner early, in the area, without hurry, and show up at the entrances in advance. A concert that starts at 21:00 in an arena requires being seated well beforehand, especially if the group includes people who move slowly. Bring a warm layer to hold in your hand: outside it's December, inside the full hall warms up.
Second piece of advice, more practical: buy tickets only on the presale network authorized by the organization, reachable from the promoter's site, and distrust anyone who offers you seats on social media, messaging groups or sites not indicated in the official releases. The Il Volo audience is loyal and large, and it is exactly the kind of audience that unauthorized resale targets at Christmas. A gift ticket, in this season, should be bought with the care of an important purchase: checking the seller.
Third piece of advice: decide beforehand how to get back. Metro with an eye on the last run, a taxi called away from the square, or a room booked in EUR or along line B. Those who solve the return before leaving home enjoy the concert until the last encore.
Tickets for Il Volo in Rome: how to buy them without risks
Tickets for Il Volo at Palazzo dello Sport on December 17, 2026 are bought on the presale network authorized by the organization, indicated on the official page of the World Tour 2026/2027 on the Friends & Partners site. Prices, divided by sector, are published by the authorized reseller.
The authorized network
The promoter lists for each date the official sales channels, with a dedicated button for the Rome date. That is where you should always start, even if you found the concert with an online search: the sponsored results of search engines often put secondary resale sites on top, with inflated prices and no guarantee. The rule is simple: if the site isn't the one indicated by the promoter, it isn't the right place.
Fan club and special packages
For the World Tour dates the presale was opened early to members of the official fan club, and then to the general public. On the tour's official page, next to the ordinary tickets, an offer of special packages also appears for the Rome date. Those looking for an experience different from a simple seat have there the official reference, with the details of what is included.
Gift tickets and resale
A concert eight days before Christmas is a natural gift, and this attracts scammers. Distrust those who sell on social media, those who ask for bank transfers to private individuals, those who show the photo of a ticket instead of the ticket. If you give the tickets as a gift, check the conditions on named tickets and name changes of the authorized network. They are the rules that apply on the night of the concert, at the entrance.
Another well-known fact, and yet rarely mentioned
It's a known fact, but it's rarely remembered when talking about concerts: Palazzo dello Sport in EUR is an Olympic building. It was designed by Pier Luigi Nervi with Marcello Piacentini for the 1960 Rome Olympics, and its scale, its routes, its position answer a precise need: to receive large crowds, let them in and out, connect them to the city. When the Il Volo audience fills the hall, it will use a building designed more than 60 years ago for the public of an Olympics.
The other fact taken for granted is the place naming. The arena faces a square named for its designer, Piazzale Pier Luigi Nervi, and the metro line B station that serves it is called EUR Palasport. The building gave its name to the station, the designer to the square. In Rome, where stations usually carry the name of squares, streets or ancient monuments, it is a rare case: here the stop carries the name of a 20th-century arena.
The third fact concerns Il Volo, and it is just as well known and little cited: the trio was born on television, and television has accompanied it at every stage. The RAI 1 live broadcasts from Verona, from Assisi, from the Senate, from Lebanon. Those of Canale 5 from Florence, from Jerusalem, from Verona. PBS in the United States. The Il Volo audience often knows them from the living room at home. For many, the concert at Palazzo dello Sport will be the first time live, and the difference between the voice that comes through a screen and the one that fills a hall is the very reason it's worth going. The verdict is clear: those who have heard them only on television haven't really heard them yet.
How to organize the evening of the Il Volo concert in EUR
For the Il Volo concert of December 17, 2026 it's best to arrive in EUR well in advance, have dinner in the area and decide beforehand how to get back. Three simple choices that change the evening.
Before the concert
EUR doesn't have the density of bars and trattorias of the historic center, and on concert nights the venues closest to the arena all fill up at the same moment. Those who arrive in the late afternoon find a table calmly, those who arrive at 20:00 get in line. If the group is large, book dinner.
Where to eat before or after
In the district you find pizzerias, Roman trattorias, seafood restaurants and bars with a hot buffet, concentrated along the main avenues and around the metro stations. The most sensible choice for a concert night is a simple, not too long dinner, or a generous aperitivo. An alternative for those arriving from the center is to have dinner along line B, before boarding the train, and arrive in EUR already ready.
After the concert
At the exit the square fills up in a few minutes and the metro stations get crowded. If you're in no hurry, wait 15 minutes before moving. The flow thins out and walking is easier. With older people or small children in the group, set a precise meeting point, recognizable in the dark too, before going in.
What to bring
An ID, because named tickets may be checked at the entrance. A charged phone, if the ticket is digital. A warm layer for the wait outdoors. The rules on bags, backpacks and permitted items are set by the venue and the organization, so it's best to read them on the sales network a few days beforehand and travel light.
What to see in EUR around Palazzo dello Sport
Palazzo dello Sport is in the center of the EUR district, a piece of 20th-century city with architecture, museums and green spaces reachable on foot from the arena. Those who arrive early have plenty to fill the afternoon. For a complete picture I refer you to the guide on what to see in EUR.
The lake
The artificial lake stretches a few steps from the arena, with tree-lined avenues around it. In December it isn't the place of summer strolls, but in the afternoon, with the low light, it's the quietest spot to wait for concert time and to look at the roof of Palazzo dello Sport from a distance.
The Square Colosseum
The Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, which Romans call the Square Colosseum, is the symbol building of the district. Its facade of stacked arches is one of the most recognizable images of 20th-century Rome. It's worth the detour even just to see it from outside, before dark.
The Nuvola
The New Convention Center by Massimiliano Fuksas, the Nuvola, is the other face of EUR, the contemporary one. Set next to Nervi's Olympic arena it tells well how the district kept changing, each generation with its own way of building.
Museums and churches
In the district are the Museo delle Civiltà and the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, which dominates EUR from above with its dome. Those with time in the afternoon should check opening hours on the official sites. In December they can change near the holidays.
With the younger ones
For families with children who arrive early, the avenues around the lake and the open spaces of the district are the best way to burn off some energy before two hours of sitting. An afternoon outdoors makes the evening in the hall much easier.
The right photo to take at Il Volo at Palazzo dello Sport in Rome, December 17, 2026
The right photo, in mid-December, is taken outside, before going in. The sun sets early, and when you arrive in EUR around 19:00 the night is already full: Palazzo dello Sport lit up, with its great circular roof standing out from the dark, and the line of people dressed for winter climbing toward the entrances. Stand at some distance, on the lake side or along one of the avenues that rise toward the square, and frame the whole building with the crowd in the foreground. It's the image that really tells the evening: a 1960 Olympic arena welcoming the audience of three voices born in 2009.
Inside, the photo that counts is the one of the moment the lights go down, before the trio comes on stage: the full hall, the screens on, thousands of lit phones. From the stands, with a little height, you take in the whole arena. Then put the phone away. The advice here is clear: a concert of voices is to be listened to, and those who film it from start to finish go home with a video of muddy audio and without the memory of the evening. One photo at the beginning, one at the song you were waiting for, and that's it.
One last idea for those who come with family: the group photo on the square, with the arena behind and the ticket in hand. In a few years, for the children who that night will have seen their first concert, it will be the most precious photo of all. And if the group has three generations, line them up: it's the most faithful picture of the Il Volo audience.
Accessibility, children and practical information for the Il Volo concert
For the Il Volo concert at Palazzo dello Sport, information on accessibility, reserved seats and entry of minors is handled by the authorized sales network and by the organization. It's best to act in advance, especially for special requests.
Accessibility
Those who need seats for people with disabilities or assistance at the entrance must follow the procedures indicated by the organization and the sales network, which for arena concerts generally provide a dedicated channel and a limited number of seats. The advice is to act early, before the reserved seats sell out, and to arrive well in advance on the night of the concert. The promoter's customer service is the reference for any doubts.
With children and teenagers
Il Volo is one of the few arena artists you can take to see with peace of mind as a family: the repertoire is melodic, the audience well-mannered, the atmosphere that of a grand show. The rules on minimum age and accompaniment of minors are those set by the organization and the sales network. For the little ones consider earplugs or noise-canceling headphones. In an arena the volume is high anyway.
With grandparents
Many Il Volo spectators have white hair, and their needs should be thought through beforehand: a seat in the stands that is easy to reach, entry in the first minutes after opening to avoid the crush, a booked taxi or a ride for the return. A December evening, outdoors on the square, is cold for anyone.
The day of the week
December 17, 2026 is a Thursday. For those who come from outside and have school or work on Friday, the late-night return has to be planned. For those who can, a night in the city or a day off on Friday turns the concert into a pre-Christmas weekend in Rome.
Some important events that happened here in history
Palazzo dello Sport in EUR was born for the 1960 Rome Olympics, designed by Pier Luigi Nervi with Marcello Piacentini. The first important event of its history is the very reason it exists: the Games that were to show the world a rebuilt, modern capital, able to host a global event 15 years after the end of the war. The arena was one of the symbol buildings of that season, and the EUR district, born from a 1930s project for a universal exposition that the war canceled, found in that moment a new vocation.
The second event is the transformation into a concert hall. Over the decades the building has changed name several times, Palaeur for many Romans, PalaLottomatica for a period, today Palazzo dello Sport again, and with the names the audience changed: from sports fans to spectators of major music. Bob Dylan's Roman dates at Palaeur in 1984 and 1987 and at PalaLottomatica in 2011, reconstructed in the page on Bob Dylan's concert on November 5, 2026, tell well this continuity.
The third event, for those going to hear Il Volo, is more recent and more personal: on January 21, 2025 the trio brought Tutti per uno, Ad Astra, Live nei palasport here, within the tour that celebrated 15 years of career and the first album of original songs. The concert of December 17, 2026 is the trio's second time in this hall in less than two years. It's a good sign: artists return where the audience responded.
Who has passed through Il Volo at Palazzo dello Sport in Rome, December 17, 2026
Through Palazzo dello Sport have passed the athletes of the 1960 Olympics and, over the decades, the protagonists of Italian and international music. Il Volo itself sang here on January 21, 2025. It is a list that explains the function of the hall better than any description.
The biggest name in the hall's recent history is probably Bob Dylan, who played here in the 1980s, when everyone called it Palaeur, and returns in November 2026. In the same season that brings Il Volo here the calendar lines up Giorgia in September, the Pooh in October for their 60 years of career, Raf, Gigi D'Alessio in November, then Irama and ANNA in December, a few days from the trio. These are very different audiences alternating under the same roof: songwriter pop, Neapolitan song, rap, lyric pop.
Il Volo, in this list, occupies a particular place. It is the Italian group that more than any other has taken the repertoire of the great tenors around the world, and that around the world has shared the stage with Barbra Streisand, Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, singing in front of Pope Francis in Panama and in the Senate chamber at Palazzo Madama. When on December 17 Barone, Boschetto and Ginoble step onto the stage of Palazzo dello Sport, they will bring that history with them, and the EUR hall will add it to its own. For those sitting in the stands, the beauty is also this: knowing you are in a place where, night after night, passes the music that Rome wants to hear, from generation to generation.
December in Rome: the time of year of the Il Volo concert
The Il Volo concert of December 17, 2026 falls in the week before Christmas, when Rome is full of lights, nativity scenes and markets. For those arriving from outside it's an occasion to combine the concert with a few days in the city.
The weather
In mid-December Rome is cool, rarely freezing. By day you walk well in a light coat, in the evening the temperature drops and you feel the humidity, especially outdoors waiting for the entrances. It can rain, and rain in Rome slows everything down. If the sky threatens, leave even earlier.
Christmas in the city
Those who stay a few days find the city in its Christmas dress: the lights of the shopping streets, the nativity scenes in the churches, the markets. To get oriented among events and traditions there is our guide to Christmas in Rome. An Il Volo concert, with its long history of Christmas live broadcasts, fits naturally into this atmosphere.
Sleeping nearby
For those coming from outside, the most convenient solution is to sleep in EUR or along metro line B, so you can return to the hotel without changes after the concert. Those who prefer the historic center must factor in the late-evening trip back. In the weeks of Christmas rooms fill up, so book early.
