The plot of Bamboccioni: three graduates and a city apartment

Bamboccioni tells the story of three graduates, Anton Giulio, Gianni Alberto and Antonino, who still live with their mothers and can't face adult life, despite a solid education.

The mayor's offer

The engine of the comedy is a public initiative. The mayor decides to help unemployed people like them finally enter the world of work and society, and makes some city apartments available. In exchange he asks only for a few hours of community service a week. The three thus find themselves, against their will, sharing the same roof, away from their mothers' care for the first time.

Living together

The show's presentation speaks of gags, misunderstandings and clumsy attempts to adapt to daily life. The comedy comes from the gap between the protagonists' education, since they have studied and know a lot, and their inability to cope with the simplest chores of running a home.

Lucida and Nevio

Things get complicated when two characters from the margins enter the trio's lives: Lucida, an alcoholic prostitute, and Nevio, homeless by choice. The clash between the frailties of the eternal sons and the hardness of those who live on the street produces, according to the company, moments of genuine comedy and at the same time a reflection on the cracks in society. The ending isn't revealed here.

The tone of Bamboccioni: irony and melancholy

Teatro de' Servi presents Bamboccioni as a comedy that alternates irony and melancholy and offers a clear-eyed, affectionate portrait of contemporary Italy.

A country that doesn't let you grow up

The presentation describes a country in which, between job insecurity and emotional dependence, becoming an adult seems the real challenge. It's the key to the text: the three protagonists are not just lazy or spoiled, they are the product of a setting in which stable work is rare and the parents' home remains for years the only possible refuge.

The contrast with the margins

The arrival of Lucida and Nevio shifts the point of view. Those who have everything and don't know how to use it find themselves next to those who have nothing, and the comedy plays on this friction. In our view it is the most interesting dramatic move in the text, because it stops the laughter from becoming just mockery of the three protagonists.

A comedy by a living author

The script is by Roberto D'Alessandro, an actor and writer active on the Rome stage for more than 30 years. De' Servi has long built its seasons on Italian comedies by living authors, and Bamboccioni fits squarely into this line.

Giancarlo Fares, director and performer

Giancarlo Fares directs Bamboccioni and also performs in it: an actor and director, over the years he has directed drama and comedy on Rome's stages and has acted in Paolo Sorrentino's series about the papacy.

His productions

Published profiles record several productions directed by Fares. In 2010 he directed a Divine Comedy, and in 2011 Tua, a script by Gessica Jurgens, Carlo Jurgens and Riccardo Bàrbera. In 2017 he staged Eric Assous' Coniugi, with Roberto D'Alessandro and Beatrice Luzzi. Between 2018 and 2019 he directed Non si uccidono così anche i cavalli?, with Giuseppe Zeno, and in 2020 Uomo tra gli uomini, with Antonio Catania.

Commedia di Gaetanaccio at Eliseo

In the 2018/19 season of Teatro Eliseo in Rome, Fares directed Commedia di Gaetanaccio, whose cast included Carlotta Proietti, daughter of Gigi Proietti. It is one of the most visible productions of his career, on one of the city's historic stages.

Television

On television Fares played Franco in The Young Pope and its sequel The New Pope, Paolo Sorrentino's series. His name also appears among the artists who have performed at Teatro Petrolini in Testaccio.

The partnership with D'Alessandro

Bamboccioni is not the first meeting between Fares and D'Alessandro: in 2017 the director had already directed the author as an actor in Coniugi. In this comedy Fares is also on stage, and directs a text he knows from the inside.

Roberto D'Alessandro, the author of Bamboccioni

Roberto D'Alessandro, born in Montalto Uffugo on August 9, 1966, is an Italian actor and director, author of several stage comedies including Bamboccioni, E pensare che eravamo comunisti and Una casa di pazzi.

Training

Raised in Montalto Uffugo, in Calabria, D'Alessandro earned a diploma in set design from the Accademia di Palmi. In 1991 he moved to Rome to attend the Laboratorio di Esercitazioni Sceniche run by Gigi Proietti, from which he graduated in 1993. He has lived in the capital ever since.

I Picari

In 1995 he was one of the founders of the group I Picari, which stood out on the Rome theater and cabaret scene of the 1990s. With the group he created shows such as La Bibbia in 90 minuti, Tutta l'opera lirica in 90 minuti, Shakespeare per attori cani and Cinematografo, 80 film in 80 minuti.

Television and film

Alongside theater, D'Alessandro has acted in Rai and Mediaset dramas such as Don Matteo, Cuore, Non lasciamoci più 2, Distretto di polizia and Un posto al sole. In film he has appeared, among others, in Heaven, Regina dei fiori, 2061, Un anno eccezionale and Natale col boss. In 2006 he wrote and starred in the program Fiori di zucca on Odeon TV.

The author

Since the 2000s D'Alessandro has written and staged comedies: his titles include Tre uomini e un babà, Nerone superstar, Un matrimonio all'italiana, Bamboccioni, che noia il posto fisso, Una casa di pazzi, Come tre sorelle and Call Center 3.0. He adapted for the stage Milano non esiste, a novel by Calabrian poet Dante Maffia, and wrote Il Cavalier Calabrese, a first-person biography of the painter Mattia Preti.

Civic theater and festivals

In 2011 he staged Terroni, Pino Aprile's book, as song-theater, explicitly drawing on Giorgio Gaber's civic theater. In September 2015 he created and organized the first edition of Testaccio Comic Off, now Roma Comic Off, a festival of comic theater spread across the spaces of the Testaccio district.

The cast of Bamboccioni at de' Servi

On stage at Teatro de' Servi are four actors: Giancarlo Fares, Andrea Catarinozzi, Stefano Tomassini and Valerio Giombetti.

Four actors for many characters

The plot has at least five main figures, the three graduates, Lucida and Nevio, plus the mayor and the mothers evoked by the story. With four performers on the poster, the casting probably involves some directorial solutions. The theater does not publish who plays which part, and the surprise is left for the audience.

The production

The show is presented by La Bilancia Produzioni. La Bilancia is also the name of the company that has run Teatro de' Servi since July 2002, and that has built its focus on contemporary Italian comedy.

Teatro de' Servi, a hall born in a convent garden

Teatro de' Servi is a drama hall in the Trevi district, built in 1950 on land that was the vegetable garden and garden of the convent next to the parish of Santa Maria in Via, overlooking Via del Tritone.

The opening with Eduardo

The hall opened on April 26, 1957 with Eduardo De Filippo's company and the world premiere of De Pretore Vincenzo. Eduardo directed, Titina De Filippo designed the sets and Renzo Rossellini wrote the music. In the main roles were Achille Millo and Valeria Moricone, who was making her debut on that occasion.

Censorship

According to the history published by the theater, after the premiere the Vicariate imposed censorship on the comedy, amid controversy that gripped the city, and the hall stayed closed for a few months. An eventful start for a theater born next to a parish church.

The closures of the 1980s

The safety rules introduced in the 1980s forced de' Servi into a series of pauses: closure at the end of the 1983 season, reopening in 1984 with 252 seats, a new stop in 1988 and a restart at the beginning of 1990.

Under La Bilancia

Since July 2002 the hall has been run by La Bilancia, which has renovated the systems and spaces, partly with the work of architect and set designer Massimo Marafante. For more than 10 years the program has been devoted to Italian comedies by living authors: in the 2026/27 season it has featured titles such as Se ti sposo mi rovino, Niente progetti per il futuro and Due cuori in chat.

How to get to Teatro de' Servi for Bamboccioni

Teatro de' Servi is at Via del Mortaro 22, at the corner of Via del Tritone, in the historic center and inside the ZTL: the most convenient option is Metro A to Barberini, about half a kilometer from the theater.

By metro

From the Barberini stop of Line A, head down Via del Tritone and in a few minutes you reach the corner with Via del Mortaro. After the evening performance the way back is a short climb.

By bus

Several surface lines run along Via del Tritone. To choose the best line and stop for your starting point, use the ATAC route planner. If you are coming from Piazza Venezia you can also walk up Via del Corso to Piazza Colonna and continue on foot.

By car

The theater is in the limited traffic zone: before driving, check the hours of the access gates. The de' Servi website recommends Parcheggio Colonna, at Via di Santa Maria in Via 11/13 (phone 06 6780506), a few steps from the hall. For weeknight performances a taxi remains the simplest option.

A curious fact about Bamboccioni at Teatro de' Servi, April 6 to 18, 2027

The first curious fact concerns the relationship between author and director. Roberto D'Alessandro, who wrote Bamboccioni, trained in Rome in Gigi Proietti's Laboratorio di Esercitazioni Sceniche. Giancarlo Fares, who directs the comedy, directed Commedia di Gaetanaccio at Eliseo with Carlotta Proietti in the cast. Two different paths that cross the same family of Roman theater, and that already met in 2017, when Fares directed D'Alessandro in Eric Assous' Coniugi. The second curious fact concerns the title. In the list of D'Alessandro's works the comedy appears with an explicit subtitle, Bamboccioni, che noia il posto fisso ("what a bore, a steady job"): an ironic formula that overturns the cliché and puts in the protagonists' mouths an impatience that their lifestyle contradicts. At de' Servi the title is plain, just Bamboccioni. The third curious fact concerns the hall. Teatro de' Servi was born in 1957 with an Eduardo comedy stopped by the Vicariate's censorship. 70 years later it hosts a comedy in which an alcoholic prostitute and a homeless man by choice take the stage. The comparison between the two eras says a lot about how much Italian comic theater has changed and about the freedom it has today in depicting the margins of society.

Something nobody tells you about Bamboccioni at Teatro de' Servi, April 6 to 18, 2027

What the posters don't say is that Bamboccioni is not a comedy against young people. The title evokes a reproachful label ("bamboccioni" is what Italians call grown-up kids who won't leave home), and anyone entering the hall might expect easy satire on 30-somethings who don't leave their parents' house. The theater's presentation goes in another direction: it speaks of a clear-eyed and affectionate portrait, of job insecurity and emotional dependence, of a country in which becoming an adult is the real challenge. In our view it's precisely this ambiguity that makes the text interesting, because the laughter at the three protagonists soon turns into a question about who made them this way. The second thing concerns the characters of Lucida and Nevio. On paper they are supporting figures, but it's their arrival that changes the meaning of the comedy: the prostitute and the homeless man by choice bring into the three graduates' home an experience of life that no degree teaches. The third thing is practical. With four actors on the poster and a plot full of characters, it's best to arrive with no expectations about who plays what and discover in the hall the solutions of Fares' direction, since he is also on stage. The fourth concerns the audience: the theme of children who don't leave home speaks to two generations at once, and an evening with parents and adult children in the audience is perhaps the best way to see this comedy.

My tip for Bamboccioni at Teatro de' Servi, April 6 to 18, 2027

My advice is to make the most of the theater's location, about 100 meters from the Trevi Fountain, and turn the show into a full evening in the Trevi district. In April the days are already long: if you choose the 21:00 performance you can arrive in the sunset light, wander between Galleria Alberto Sordi, Galleria Sciarra and Piazza Colonna, and reach Via del Mortaro at leisure. If you prefer the 17:30 matinees on Saturday and Sunday, you have the evening free for dinner, and can walk up toward Quirinal Palace after the show. The second tip concerns which performance to choose. In our view the weeknights of the first week, from April 6 to 9, are the quietest if you want a good seat. Saturday night is usually the most in demand, so book a few days ahead. The third concerns company: Bamboccioni is about parents and children, and seeing it with someone from the other generation makes the evening richer in talking points even after the curtain. The fourth is about money: with a €25 ticket and a possible discount for two through the theater's newsletter, it's worth checking the offers before buying.

Around Teatro de' Servi: what to see before and after Bamboccioni

Within five minutes' walk of Teatro de' Servi are the Trevi Fountain, Galleria Alberto Sordi, Galleria Sciarra, Piazza Colonna and the Accademia di San Luca. In 10 minutes you reach the Quirinal and Piazza di Spagna.

The Trevi Fountain

The fountain is about 110 meters from the theater as the crow flies. At night the lighting changes the color of the travertine and, especially after 23:00, the square is less crowded than during the day.

The two galleries

Galleria Alberto Sordi, about 130 meters away, connects Via del Tritone and Piazza Colonna under a glass and iron roof. Galleria Sciarra, about 200 meters away, is a covered courtyard with walls decorated with late 19th-century paintings.

The Quirinal, Piazza di Spagna and the other theaters

The Quirinal is about 340 meters away, uphill, and Piazza di Spagna about 450. In the same area is Teatro Quirino, one of the great drama theaters of the center, if you want to put together a week of theater.

Another well-known fact, yet one rarely mentioned

It's well known that Gigi Proietti's school trained generations of Roman actors. Less often remembered is that the same workshop also produced comedy writers who today fill the programs of the capital's mid-size theaters. Roberto D'Alessandro is one example: he came to Rome from Calabria in 1991 with a diploma in set design from the Accademia di Palmi, attended the Laboratorio di Esercitazioni Sceniche until graduating in 1993, and two years later founded I Picari, a group that brought to the 1990s Rome stage a humor made of impossible summaries, such as the Bible or the whole of opera told in 90 minutes. From that cabaret training ground came the comedy writer of the 2000s, able to move from farce to civic theater: in 2011 D'Alessandro staged Pino Aprile's Terroni as song-theater, naming Giorgio Gaber as his model. Another rarely mentioned fact concerns his work as an organizer: in September 2015 he created Testaccio Comic Off, now Roma Comic Off, a festival that spreads comic theater across several spaces in the Testaccio district, theatrical and otherwise. Bamboccioni comes out of this path, in which comedy has always been a way to talk about current events and their distortions.

The right photo to take at Bamboccioni at Teatro de' Servi, April 6 to 18, 2027

No photos during the performance: de' Servi is an intimate hall, and in a comedy built on jokes and comic timing a lit screen in the audience disturbs both the actors and the people sitting nearby. The right photo is taken before or after. The first is at the entrance on Via del Mortaro, in front of the show's poster, with the theater's sign clearly visible: a simple souvenir that captures title, venue and date. The second is taken at the corner of Via del Tritone, where the theater looks onto one of the busiest streets in the center: in the April light, before the evening performance, the perspective of the street gives depth to the frame. The third is the Trevi Fountain after the 21:00 performance, when the crowd starts to thin out and you only need to wait a few minutes to find a gap in front of the basin. Without flash, which flattens the water and annoys the people around you, the night lighting gives the travertine a warm tone. If you like themed images, look in Galleria Alberto Sordi for a shot of the glass roof with people passing below: a small urban crowd, fitting for a comedy about how you become, or don't become, an adult citizen. If you come as a couple or with family, the most successful photo is often the simplest, everyone together in front of the fountain, ticket still in your pocket.

Some important events that happened here in history

The story of Teatro de' Servi begins in 1950, when the building was built on the land that had been the vegetable garden and garden of the convent of the parish of Santa Maria in Via, overlooking Via del Tritone. On April 26, 1957 Eduardo De Filippo's company opened the hall with the world premiere of De Pretore Vincenzo, with sets by Titina De Filippo, music by Renzo Rossellini and performances by Achille Millo and Valeria Moricone. Shortly after the debut the Vicariate imposed censorship on the show. The controversy involved the city and the theater stayed closed for a few months. In the following decades, until the end of the 1970s, de' Servi became a landmark for Roman audiences, with Italian and foreign companies, concerts and chamber opera. In the 1980s the new safety rules for performance venues required work and closures: the hall stopped at the end of the 1983 season, reopened in 1984 with 252 seats, closed again in 1988 and resumed activity at the beginning of 1990. In July 2002 management passed to La Bilancia, which renovated the systems and spaces, partly with architect and set designer Massimo Marafante, and steered the program toward Italian comedies by living authors. In April 2027 a production by the same company, Bamboccioni, stages a text by Roberto D'Alessandro directed by Giancarlo Fares, almost exactly 70 years after the opening with Eduardo: April 26, 2027 falls eight days after the last performance.

Who has passed through Bamboccioni at Teatro de' Servi, April 6 to 18, 2027

According to the history published by the theater, an important slice of Roman entertainment of the second half of the 20th century has crossed the de' Servi stage. At the opening there were Eduardo De Filippo and his company, with Titina De Filippo on sets, Achille Millo and a very young Valeria Moricone. In the following years came actors like Aldo Giuffrè, Fiorenzo Fiorentini, Silvio Spaccesi, Giusi Raspani Dandolo and Jole Fierro, and foreign performers like Robert Alda and Eva Bartok. On the music side the hall has hosted conductors like Massimo Pradella and Renzo Rossellini, opera singers like Katia Ricciarelli and Giuseppe Sabatini, ensembles like Massimo Coen's I Solisti Romani, and then Eduardo Bennato and the Momix dance company. In April 2027 Giancarlo Fares, director and performer, comes to Via del Mortaro with Andrea Catarinozzi, Stefano Tomassini and Valerio Giombetti, in a text by Roberto D'Alessandro. Fares brings a career that goes from productions at Eliseo to Paolo Sorrentino's series. D'Alessandro, present in spirit as author, brings Proietti's school, the experience of I Picari and a long series of comedies written for the city's theaters. In the same season de' Servi hosts other living authors of Italian comedy, in a program that makes the hall one of the genre's reference points in central Rome.

Which Bamboccioni performance to choose

With two weeks of performances and three different times, Bamboccioni at Teatro de' Servi lets you choose the performance based on the kind of evening you want to plan.

Tuesday to Friday

The 21:00 weekday performances are attended mostly by a Roman audience coming from work. Dinner is after, when the center is quieter.

Saturday

Saturday offers two options: the 17:30 matinee leaves the evening free, and the 21:00 performance is usually the most in demand. For Saturday, April 10 and Saturday, April 17, move early.

Sunday

Sunday at 17:30 is the most convenient choice if you are coming from outside Rome and want to get back in the evening, and for families with older kids.

Where to eat near Teatro de' Servi

Around Trevi the choice of restaurants is wide but strongly geared to passing tourists: for dinner before or after Bamboccioni, move a few streets away, toward the streets below the Quirinal or toward the Pantheon.

With the 21:00 performance

You eat after the show, Roman style: book a place that takes guests after 23:00, or fall back on a pizzeria.

With the matinees

The 17:30 performances end in time for dinner at a normal hour. Before the show a coffee at the counter or a gelato between Trevi and Piazza Colonna is enough.

Accessibility and practical information

Teatro de' Servi is a mid-size hall, brought up to safety standards several times. For accessibility for people with mobility impairments and any dedicated seats, call the box office at 06 6795130 before buying.

Recommended age

Bamboccioni is a comedy for adults and older kids: the plot includes an alcoholic prostitute and a homeless man, and the themes are work, job insecurity and the relationship with parents. The theater publishes no age guidance. For young children the comedy is not very suitable.

April in Rome

In mid-April Roman evenings are mild but still cool: after the 21:00 performance you'll need a light jacket. It's a busy time for tourism, and the Trevi district is crowded until late at night.

My final tip on Bamboccioni

Bamboccioni is a contemporary comedy written by an author who knows Rome's theaters well and directed by a director who over the years has gone from Eliseo to Sorrentino's series. The theme, adult children who can't leave home, is one that touches almost every family, and the presentation promises laughter that doesn't stop at mockery but opens a reflection on the cracks in society. In our view the arrival of Lucida and Nevio is the most interesting reason to see the show: that's where the comedy of manners becomes something more. My advice is to choose one of the weeknight performances of the first week, bring someone from the other generation and arrive early for a walk between Trevi, the galleries and Piazza Colonna. The €25 ticket, for an evening of theater about 100 meters from the Trevi Fountain, is a reasonable price.
