Rumori fuori scena: what happens on stage

Rumori fuori scena tells the misadventures of a ramshackle company of actors grappling with a comedy of errors full of sardines and of doors opening and closing: it is theater within theater, and one of the most precise comic mechanisms of the 20th century.

Act one: the dress rehearsal

In the first act the audience watches the show's dress rehearsal, like silent guests hidden among the theater seats. The play within the play, in the English original Nothing On, is a farce with a country house, a housekeeper with a plate of sardines, a real estate agent, homeowners who come back unexpectedly and a burglar.

Act two: backstage

In the second act the scene turns around. The audience sees the same show from backstage, during a performance, while the company falls apart amid jealousies, delays and spite. It is the most famous part, almost wordless, built on split-second comic timing.

Act three: the performance

In the third act we return to the front of the curtain, to an end-of-tour performance in which everything that can go wrong goes wrong. The Vittoria's presentation calls it a dramatic but ironic performance.

The meaning

By ridiculing the mechanisms of classical comedy, the theater explains, the author acts with simplicity and great irony, without upending the canons but cracking their already fragile consistency. The result is a comedy that is not vulgar, not predictable, not silly, and that has made people laugh for over 40 years. The theater presents it as a perfect comedy in the original text, the translation, the adaptation, the direction and the performance.

Michael Frayn, the author

Michael Frayn, born in London on September 8, 1933, is a British writer and playwright, author of Rumori fuori scena, Wild Honey and the play Copenhagen.

From journalism to theater

Frayn began as a journalist for the Guardian and then the Observer, and worked as a television writer for the BBC, essayist and novelist. Rumori fuori scena, Noises Off, dates to 1982.

Copenhagen

In 1998 he wrote Copenhagen, about the mysterious 1941 meeting between Danish physicist Niels Bohr and his student Werner Heisenberg, head of the German nuclear program. The play had great impact in the scientific community too, for the way it stages the human factor behind the history of the atomic bomb.

The novels

Among the novels, Headlong, from 1999, was a Booker Prize finalist. Frayn has also written essays on theater and a book about his father, My Father's Fortune.

Frayn and the Vittoria

The tie between Frayn and Teatro Vittoria goes beyond Rumori fuori scena. On January 5, 1990, directed by Attilio Corsini, the Vittoria hosted the world premiere of Spettattori, Look Look in English, in the presence of the author: another theater-within-theater comedy, in which audience and performers mirror each other.

Attori e Tecnici and Attilio Corsini

Attori e Tecnici is the cooperative founded in 1977 by Attilio Corsini and Viviana Toniolo, born as a touring company and based at Teatro Vittoria since 1986. Rumori fuori scena is its signature title.

Attilio Corsini

Born in Marcellina, in the province of Rome, in 1945, a graduate of the Accademia nazionale d'arte drammatica, Corsini had worked at the Piccolo in Milan and in the stabile theaters of Turin and Rome. In 1972 he was on stage in Zurich with Luca Ronconi. With Attori e Tecnici he directed dozens of shows, from Molière to Feydeau, from Chekhov to Woody Allen and Neil Simon, and also operas such as Nino Rota's Il cappello di paglia di Firenze.

The 1983 debut

The Italian premiere of Rumori fuori scena, directed by Corsini, was staged in Rome on December 16, 1983 at Teatro Flaiano. Since then the staging has stayed the same, and three years later the company found a home at the Vittoria.

After Corsini

Attilio Corsini died in Rome in 2008. The wake was set up at Teatro Vittoria itself. Artistic direction passed to Viviana Toniolo, who has continued his path, including the periodic return of the best-loved title.

A company with a brand

In its history the cooperative has always bet on the Attori e Tecnici brand more than on the name of an individual star actor, with a way of making theater that involves all its members. Stefano Messina, Carlo Lizzani, Chiara David and Chiara Bonome, in the cast of Rumori fuori scena, are also among the faces of the company's other productions.

A curiosity about Rumori fuori scena with the Compagnia Attori e Tecnici at Teatro Vittoria, January 21 to February 14, 2027

The most surprising curiosity is written on the show page itself, under the heading director's notes. The director's notes, the theater explains, were lost over the years, which is a real shame. This gap meant that many spectators have seen the show as many as 10 times, guaranteeing so many years of performances. Since then not one comma has changed. The only change from the debut, the note concludes, is the physical one of the actors who have performed it since that day. It is a joke, but it says something true: Rumori fuori scena at the Vittoria is a show preserved the way a repertory work is preserved, with the same Attilio Corsini direction, the same set and the same costumes for over four decades.

The second curiosity concerns the author. Michael Frayn is not only the author of the text the company has staged most. In January 1990 he was in Rome, at the Vittoria, for the world premiere of another of his comedies, Spettattori, directed by Corsini. It is rare for a Roman theater to claim a world premiere by a British playwright of that stature.

Third curiosity: among the actors on stage is Carlo Lizzani, namesake of the Italian film director. For the Vittoria audience he is simply one of the company's longtime faces.

Teatro Vittoria, the Testaccio hall

Teatro Vittoria is Testaccio's playhouse, at Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatrice 10, opened in its present form in December 1986 with 560 red velvet seats in front of a large stage.

From variety to cinema

In the early 1900s the Vittoria was a two-story building facing an unpaved square, with a brand-new church opposite. It hosted variety shows. After the war the building was torn down and in its place rose an apartment building with a large cinema on the ground floor, with orchestra and balcony, built by the entrepreneur Amati.

The birth of the drama theater

In May 1986 work began to turn the cinema into a drama theater, to a design by architect Enrico Nespega, desired by Attilio Corsini. In December of the same year the new Vittoria opened to the public.

Beyond drama

The Vittoria also organizes literary teas, now in their 30th edition, the Salviamo i Talenti program with the prize named for Attilio Corsini, and an acting school for spettAttori (spectator-actors) aged 5 to 105. For some shows it offers an audio description service.

One thing nobody tells you about Rumori fuori scena with the Compagnia Attori e Tecnici at Teatro Vittoria, January 21 to February 14, 2027

What isn't said is that the second act of Rumori fuori scena is almost silent. While on the invisible stage the actors perform the play, backstage, where the audience is watching, everything must happen in silence so as not to be heard in the hall: quarrels, chases, hidden bottles, blocked doors. It is a comic choreography of absolute precision, and you understand why the company never wanted to change a comma. Every movement is interlocked with the others, and a one-second delay ruins the next gag.

The second thing is the advice implicit in the theater's note: Rumori fuori scena can be seen more than once. Many spectators, according to the Vittoria, have seen it as many as 10 times. On the first viewing you laugh at the plot. On the second you notice the details, because you already know what will happen and you watch how it happens. Those who saw it years ago can return sure of finding the same show, and of seeing it with different eyes.

Third thing: the reduced rate is valid Tuesday to Friday. With 22 performances, the weeknight 21:00 shows are the most convenient for those under 35 or over 65.

How to get to Teatro Vittoria

Teatro Vittoria, at Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatrice 10, is most simply reached by Metro Line B, Piramide stop, about 10 minutes on foot.

Metro Line B, Piramide stop

From the Piramide stop you cross Piazzale Ostiense, take Via Marmorata and bend toward the center of Testaccio to Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatrice. Piramide is also the hub of Roma Ostiense station and the train to Lido.

Tram 3

Tram 3 runs along Via Marmorata and drops you a few steps from the neighborhood's center. For buses it is best to use the Atac route planner.

By car

Parking in the evening in Testaccio is hard, especially on weekends, when the neighborhood fills up for the trattorias. It is better to leave the car and use the Metro.

The advice I give you for visiting Rumori fuori scena with the Compagnia Attori e Tecnici at Teatro Vittoria, January 21 to February 14, 2027

The advice is to choose the orchestra, and a central row. Rumori fuori scena is a comedy of doors, entrances and exits, of objects passing from hand to hand. In the second act, the backstage one, many gags play out in the details, and they are easier to follow from the orchestra. The price difference with the gallery is €6 on the full price, €5 on the reduced. In our view it is worth spending.

The second piece of advice concerns the day. The Tuesday to Friday evening shows at 21:00 are the ones where the reduced rate applies for under-35s, over-65s and cardholders. The Saturday 19:00 performances let you dine afterward in Testaccio without staying out late. The Sunday 17:30 shows are best suited to families. For those who want the best seat, the first dates of the run generally have more choice.

Third piece of advice: bring someone who has never seen it. Rumori fuori scena is one of those titles you give as a gift. Watching the reaction of someone discovering the second act for the first time is almost as entertaining as the show. And if you have already seen it, going back after years is an experience in itself.

Finally, arrive a little early. The Vittoria is a neighborhood theater, with a devoted audience that gathers in the foyer before the start.

Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned

It is well known that Rumori fuori scena is the signature piece of the Compagnia Attori e Tecnici. Far less often cited is that the Italian premiere was not staged at the Vittoria but at Teatro Flaiano in Rome, on December 16, 1983. The Vittoria, as a drama theater, did not yet exist. The company was then a touring company, with no hall of its own. Three years later, in 1986, Attilio Corsini would turn the Testaccio cinema into a theater. Rumori fuori scena is therefore older than the hall that hosts it today.

Another well-known and little-remembered fact is that a film was made from Frayn's play. In 1992 Peter Bogdanovich directed Noises Off, set in a theater in Des Moines, with the same play-within-a-play structure. The film got mixed reviews. Praised for its pace and the liveliness of its gags, it was also panned by some observers.

Finally, on longevity: the same direction, the same set, the same costumes for over four decades. The theater calls it a rare event on the Italian scene, and it is no exaggeration.

The right photo to take at Rumori fuori scena with the Compagnia Attori e Tecnici at Teatro Vittoria, January 21 to February 14, 2027

The right photo is taken in Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatrice, with the facade of Teatro Vittoria and the Rumori fuori scena poster on one side and the square's large church on the other. It is the image that tells Testaccio better than many others: the neighborhood theater, the church, the square with its trees and benches, the working-class district that became one of the liveliest quarters of Rome.

During the show, no photos. In a comedy built on split-second timing, a flash or a lit screen disturbs the actors and the audience. The right moment, if staff allow, is the end, when the full company, nine actors, comes back to the front of the stage for the applause in front of Bruno Garofalo's set, the same as in 1983.

The second photo is taken at Monte dei Cocci, a few minutes on foot. The artificial hill made of fragments of ancient amphorae is the symbol of the neighborhood. For those coming to the Sunday matinee, a walk before the show lets you photograph it in early afternoon light.

Around Teatro Vittoria: Testaccio

Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatrice is the center of Testaccio, the working-class district born in the late 19th century between the Tiber, the Aventine and Monte dei Cocci. An overview is on our page on what to see in Testaccio.

The Mattatoio

A few minutes from the theater is the former Mattatoio, now a contemporary art space: the place that gave the neighborhood its working-class identity. In front of the first Vittoria, the theater recalls, rose the first public housing, assigned to carters and slaughterhouse workers.

The Pyramid and the Non-Catholic Cemetery

On the way to the metro you pass the Pyramid of Cestius and, right behind it, the Non-Catholic Cemetery, one of the quietest places in Rome.

The neighborhood museum

The Museo diffuso del Rione Testaccio tells the story of the district through its places, from the public housing to the market.

Some important events that took place here in history

The history of Teatro Vittoria follows that of Testaccio. In the early 1900s the Vittoria was a two-story building on a still unpaved square, in front of a newly built church and the district's first public housing, the result of an international competition and assigned to carters and slaughterhouse workers. Variety was staged, and Aldo Fabrizi, Totò and Anna Magnani performed on that stage.

After the Second World War the old theater was torn down. The entrepreneur Amati built in its place an apartment building with the Cinema Vittoria on the ground floor, with orchestra and balcony, for years a reference point for the neighborhood's entertainment.

In May 1986 work began to turn the cinema into a drama theater, desired by Attilio Corsini and the Attori e Tecnici cooperative, to a design by architect Enrico Nespega. In December the new Vittoria opened with 560 red velvet seats. On January 5, 1990 the theater hosted the world premiere of Michael Frayn's Spettattori, in the author's presence. In 2008, after Corsini's death, artistic direction passed to Viviana Toniolo. In 2027 Rumori fuori scena celebrates here its 44th year since the debut.

Who has played Rumori fuori scena with the Compagnia Attori e Tecnici at Teatro Vittoria, January 21 to February 14, 2027

Through the stage of the first Vittoria, the variety one, passed Aldo Fabrizi, Totò and Anna Magnani, before they became faces of Italian cinema. Through the new Vittoria, since 1986, have passed the Attori e Tecnici productions and many guest companies, and in 1990 a British playwright, Michael Frayn, who came to Testaccio to attend the world premiere of his comedy Spettattori.

In the theater's history there are Attilio Corsini, actor, author and director, at the head of the cooperative until 2008, and Viviana Toniolo, co-founder and then artistic director. There are Filippo Ottoni, translator of the text, Bruno Garofalo, author of the set that has stayed identical since 1983, and Arturo Annecchino, composer of the music.

In the 2026/2027 season the Vittoria also hosts Addue and, after Rumori fuori scena, Pirandello's L'uomo, la bestia e la virtù, Donna non rieducabile, Di isole e di città and Streghe da marciapiede. And passing through, for 22 evenings, are the nine actors of this comedy: Sabrina Pellegrino, Carlo Lizzani, Stefano Messina, Chiara David, Virginia Bonacini, Stefano Dilauro, Chiara Bonome, Simone Balletti and Massimiliano Giovanetti, heirs of a staging that has already crossed four decades.

Theater within theater: why Rumori fuori scena works

Rumori fuori scena is, according to the Teatro Vittoria's presentation, one of the most interesting theater-within-theater undertakings. The show presents the same comedy three times, from three different points of view.

The repetition

The audience sees the same first act of the inner play three times: in rehearsal, from backstage, in an end-of-tour performance. Repetition is the comic engine. Knowing what should happen, the spectator laughs at every deviation, and the third time laughs even before the mistake arrives.

The audience as accomplice

In the first act those in the hall are treated as silent guests at the dress rehearsal, hidden among the seats. It is a privileged position: you see the weaknesses of the imaginary company's actors, their doubts, their jealousies, and you become an accomplice of the director trying to hold the show together.

A tribute to actors

Behind the farce is a tribute to the craft. The comedy tells how much work, how much effort and how much chaos lie behind an apparently perfect evening. Staged by a company that has acted together for decades, this dimension takes on a particular weight.

The Vittoria season around Rumori fuori scena

Rumori fuori scena is the winter flagship title in Teatro Vittoria's 2026/2027 season, which alternates company productions, guest shows and series.

The meglioprima tickets

For some season titles the theater puts on sale, on the first two show days, 100 "meglioprima" (early-bird) tickets at a single-price seat for €18, at the box office only. Rumori fuori scena is not among the titles the theater lists for this scheme. The full price, the reduced rate and the under-18 reduced rate apply.

After Rumori fuori scena

After Frayn's comedy, the Vittoria hosts the Pirandello title L'uomo, la bestia e la virtù (Man, Beast and Virtue), and then the shows Donna non rieducabile, Di isole e di città and Streghe da marciapiede.

The literary teas

Alongside the shows, the literary teas have their own prices: €11 single admission, €8 reduced for over-65s and under-35s, with no presale fee.

Rumori fuori scena with teenagers

Rumori fuori scena is a comedy suitable for teenagers too. It is not vulgar, as the theater stresses, and the physical comedy of the second act works at any age.

The right age

The theater lists no age limits. In our view the show is enjoyable from age 10 or 11, best at the Sunday 17:30 matinees.

The price

For those under 18 the ticket costs €13 in the orchestra and €11 in the gallery, plus a €2 presale fee.

A lesson in theater

For a teenager who does theater at school, or who attends the Vittoria's school for spettAttori, seeing how a show works backstage is a practical lesson. The second act shows everything the audience usually doesn't see.

Where to eat before or after the show

Testaccio is the district of traditional Roman cooking, known for the dishes of the quinto quarto (offal cuts), a legacy of the nearby slaughterhouse: coda alla vaccinara, tripe, rigatoni with pajata.

Before 21:00

For the evening performances a dinner at 19:00 leaves enough margin. On weekends the neighborhood trattorias fill up, so booking is essential.

After 17:30 and 19:00

For the Saturday and Sunday performances the solution is dinner after the show, a stone's throw from the theater. For a lunch before the matinee there is the Nuovo Mercato Testaccio, on opening days.
