Official presentation of Lavinia
LAVINIA è un programma d’arte che prende il nome da Lavinia Fontana (1552–1614).
Text from the official Cultura Roma Capitale page (service translation: “LAVINIA is an art program named after Lavinia Fontana (1552–1614).”), source
The name of the program recalls Lavinia Fontana, one of the first women artists to win full recognition in the history of art. Each episode pairs a work with a new gelato flavor. The sixth, pomegranate and sage, goes with «Last Jest» by Peter Friedl.
The work evokes the costume of Hop-Frog, the hero of the story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe: a king's jester who, besides physical strength, has a more fearsome one, the imagination able to conceive a perfect revenge and to overturn relations of power.
According to the official text, Friedl's piece is an open work that acts on several levels. It concerns costume, art as historical document, history, and the relations between aesthetics and politics, power and submission. It also has to do with theater, a recurring theme in the artist's research, a theater torn to shreds in which the action is frozen or impossible.
What else you can see at the Loggia
The works from the previous episodes also remain visible. They are by Ross Birrell and David Harding, Enzo Cucchi, Ruth Ewan, Piero Golia, Gianni Politi and Monika Sosnowska.
The project grows alongside the restoration of the Loggia dei Vini, which began in 2024 thanks to a donation from Ghella. The works were entrusted to R.O.M.A. Consorzio under the scientific direction of the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali. After three years of work, the restored Loggia can be seen by the public in its entirety.
