On Tuesday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 2, 2026, Teatro Sala Umberto, at Via della Mercede 50 in Rome, hosts «Tartufo», Michele Sinisi's staging of Molière's comedy. Full-price tickets run from 22 to 34 euros depending on the section and are sold online.
«Tartufo» takes up one of Molière's most frequently staged plays and rewrites it for today's stage: Michele Sinisi directs and reworks the text, and performs alongside Stefano Braschi, Sara Drago, Marisa Grimaldo, Donato Paternoster, Bianca Ponzio, Bruno Ricci, Lorenzo Terenzi and Adele Tirante. The show runs 115 minutes, with no intermission.
At its center is an ambiguous figure, half swindler and half man of faith, who seduces with rhetoric those who have no tools to recognize the deception. The comedy thrives on a tight rhythm and on a dark side that surfaces beneath the farcical surface. The text is followed up to the unmasking of the protagonist at the end of the fourth act; the fifth act, which in the original celebrates the king's power, is treated more ambiguously.
The set is a ring under fixed light, with a movable wall and a reflective carpet, which in the finale opens onto a golden backdrop recalling the palace of Versailles. Costumes are by Cloe Tommasin, with the Sun King costume by Daniela De Blasio; sets and lighting are by Federico Biancalani, with lighting also by Sinisi. The production is by Elsinor Centro di Produzione Teatrale, with Solares Fondazione delle Arti, Teatri di Bari, Tradizione e Turismo and Viola Produzioni. The show is in Italian.
