Marlene Kuntz play Il vile at Monk, November 17, 2026
On Tuesday, November 17, 2026 at 21:00 Marlene Kuntz play live at Monk, Via Giuseppe Mirri 35 (00159 Rome), in the Teatro hall of the Casal Bertone club, with the concert «Marlene Kuntz suona Il vile», devoted to their second album on the 30th anniversary of its release. Monk is less than a kilometer from Tiburtina station, served by metro line B and the regional trains FL1, FL2 and FL3, and by bus you can get there on lines 163, 409 and 545, listed on the club's website. Tickets are sold on the authorized presale network that Monk links to the date on its program page, and prices are published by the authorized seller indicated by the organizers. Children up to 12, accompanied by an adult with a ticket, get in free according to the club's rules.
Il vile came out on April 26, 1996 and is the record that turned a band from the province of Cuneo into a fixture of 1990s Italian rock. 30 years later, Marlene Kuntz bring it back to the stage in full, on a tour announced in October 2025 that started in March 2026. In Rome the date is in a modest-sized hall, on a Tuesday in November: the best setting for an album that lives on saturated guitars, sudden silences and lyrics to be heard word by word. If you were there in 1996 you'll find a piece of your youth again, and if you weren't you'll understand why that season is still talked about.
Marlene Kuntz at Monk: the evening of November 17
The Marlene Kuntz concert at Monk is scheduled for Tuesday, November 17, 2026 at 21:00, in the Teatro hall, and is announced by the club under the title «Suona Il vile». Monk's official program lists it among the autumn's live concerts, at the classic evening time of nine.
An album played in full
The format is the album played from start to finish, already tried by the band with success. In 2017, for the record's 20th anniversary, Marlene Kuntz took Il vile to clubs all over Italy, playing it in full, with several dates sold out. For the 30th anniversary the choice is repeated, with a partly different lineup and 30 years of distance from those songs.
The Teatro hall
The concert is held indoors, in the hall Monk calls Teatro, set in one of the club's two farmhouses. It's a club-sized hall: the audience standing, the band a few meters away, the sound hitting you with no filter. For a record like Il vile, made of extreme dynamics, it's the right setting.
A Tuesday evening
The weekday has its advantages. Dinner-hour traffic has cleared, the neighborhood is quiet, and if you work in the center you can get to Tiburtina by metro without rushing. The downside is the trip home: with the concert ending around 11 it's best to think ahead about how to get back, especially if you don't live on line B.
The lineup
Marlene Kuntz's current lineup is made up of Cristiano Godano on vocals and guitar, Riccardo Tesio on guitar, Luca «Lagash» Saporiti on bass and Sergio Carnevale on drums. The club doesn't publish the lineup for the Rome date: these are the musicians who play with the band today.
Il vile, the 1996 record that returns to the stage
Il vile is Marlene Kuntz's second studio album, recorded between late November 1995 and February 1996 and released on April 26, 1996 by the Consorzio Produttori Indipendenti. It came two years after Catartica and took up its legacy, pushing the same idea further: locking noise inside the song form.
Roots in the demos
Some of the album's ideas go back a long way. The band's third demo, recorded in March 1992, included a song called La divina: a revised version would become Cenere, on Il vile itself. The group worked like that, picking up and polishing for years songs born in their rehearsal room in Cuneo.
The production
Il vile belongs to Marlene Kuntz's first era, that of the three albums produced by Marco Lega, who had worked regularly with the band since Catartica. Only with the fourth record, Che cosa vedi, from 2000, did the group change producer, working with Gianni Maroccolo.
The tour and Petali di candore
As had happened with Catartica, the Il vile tour started shortly after the album came out and ended in February 1997. During those concerts a home video was shot, Petali di candore, with live songs from the first two records and segments on life on tour. It's the best document for understanding what Marlene Kuntz were on stage in the mid-1990s.
Why it still matters
In the Italian rock of those years few records had the same influence. Il vile showed that you could write in Italian, with literary and never trite lyrics, using guitars the way Sonic Youth used them. It's a record you listen to carefully, not in the background: live it demands the same attention, and rewards it.
Marlene Kuntz: biography of the band from Cuneo
Marlene Kuntz are an Italian alternative rock group formed in 1988 in the province of Cuneo, active for more than 35 years, with 11 studio albums to their name up to Karma Clima in 2022. Their style combines the noise of American noise rock with a strong singer-songwriter streak.
Origins in Confreria
The first core formed in 1988 around the drummer Luca Bergia and the guitarist Riccardo Tesio, who met up to rehearse with some friends at Bergia's house. In the winter of that year the bassist Franco Ballatore arrived and the group found a rehearsal room in Confreria, a hamlet of Cuneo. In 1989 Cristiano Godano joined, a guitarist and singer fresh from Jack on Fire, who began writing lyrics and guitar parts.
The name
The group's first singer was Alex Astegiano, former drummer of Jack on Fire. It was he who suggested Marlene, for the allure of Marlene Dietrich, and Godano added Kuntz, the title of a Butthole Surfers song with a deliberately provocative meaning. For a while a longer name was considered, then dropped. The first concert was held on May 13, 1989 at Parco Monviso in Cuneo.
The demos and Rock Targato Italia
In February 1990 a first four-song demo came out, well received by critics. In April of that year Astegiano left and Godano became the group's singer, while continuing to play guitar. The third demo, from 1992, took the band among the 16 finalists of the fifth edition of Rock Targato Italia in Milan: the group didn't make the top eight, but was brought back when one of the winners withdrew. In July it recorded Canzone di domani with Gianni Maroccolo.
Catartica
On May 13, 1994 Catartica came out, the group's first album and the first release of the Consorzio Produttori Indipendenti. A version of Lieve, a song the band had wanted to drop, was played in the Videomusic studios by the Consorzio Suonatori Indipendenti and included on the album In quiete: it was Giovanni Lindo Ferretti who wanted it, and that cover helped make Marlene Kuntz known to the general public.
The 1990s
After Il vile, in 1998 the EP Come di sdegno came out and in January 1999 Ho ucciso paranoia, also in a double edition with the improvisations of Spore. The 1999 tour passed 80 dates and produced the first live album, H.U.P. Live in Catharsis. In those years the writer Enrico Brizzi called them «the only Italian rock group».
The gold record and Senza peso
In 2000 Che cosa vedi, coproduced with Gianni Maroccolo and featuring Skin on the song La canzone che scrivo per te, passed 50,000 copies and earned the band a gold record. For Senza peso, from 2003, the group moved to Berlin and worked with Rob Ellis and Head: it was their first album for Virgin. That same year Marlene Kuntz played at the May Day Concert in Rome, where they met Nick Cave, one of Godano's favorite songwriters.
Bianco sporco, Uno and the singer-songwriter tradition
Bianco sporco, recorded between Cuneo and Rome, came out in March 2005 with Maroccolo on bass. In 2007 came Uno, recorded in Cuneo, with Paolo Conte on piano on the song Musa: a record that moves closer to classic Italian song. The tour that followed had 115 dates. In 2009 the first official compilation came out, with covers of Impressioni di settembre by Premiata Forneria Marconi and La libertà by Giorgio Gaber.
Film, Sanremo and television
In 2009 the band wrote the score for Davide Ferrario's Tutta colpa di Giuda, in which Godano made his acting debut, and Canzone in prigione received a David di Donatello nomination for best original song in 2010. In 2012 Marlene Kuntz took part in the Sanremo Festival with Canzone per un figlio, performed a duet with Patti Smith and won the Press Room Award. In 2013 they were vocal coaches on The Voice of Italy, on Piero Pelù's team.
From the 2010s to Karma Clima
Then came Ricoveri virtuali e sexy solitudini (2010), produced by Howie B, Nella tua luce (2013) and Lunga attesa (2016), which took the band to European clubs for the first time, from Paris to London and Dublin. In 2019 the group celebrated 30 years of career and Godano published the book Nuotando nell'aria, behind 35 of the band's songs. In 2022 Karma Clima came out, produced by Taketo Gohara, devoted to the climate crisis, with the Budapest Art Orchestra and Elisa. In March 2023 Luca Bergia, founder and longtime drummer of the group, died.
Marlene Kuntz's discography in brief

Where to start
If you're going to Monk the task is simple: listen to Il vile from start to finish, ideally twice. If you want to understand where it comes from, add Catartica, and if you want to know where the band has ended up, listen to Karma Clima. In between, Che cosa vedi is still the most accessible record.
Marlene Kuntz live: what to expect
Marlene Kuntz concerts are known for their volume, long instrumental codas and attention to the words, all elements that find their ideal space in an album like Il vile.
The improvisations
The band has always made room for experimentation: the 1998 EP Come di sdegno contained a long improvisation of about 24 minutes, and Spore collected 16 tracks born from jam sessions. Even when the program is fixed, as with an album played in full, the live sound stays open.
Acoustic and electric
Over time the group has alternated electric and acoustic concerts, theater and club tours, up to the double concert format, acoustic and electric, tried in Milan in 2018 and taken up again for the 30th anniversary of their career. Il vile at Monk belongs to the electric side: if you love the full sound of guitars you'll be well served.
Listening in the hall
Marlene Kuntz's audience is loyal and attentive. People sing, but they also listen. If you have sensitive ears, a pair of concert earplugs takes nothing away and helps you enjoy the two hours without ringing ears the next day.
Monk, Marlene Kuntz's venue in Casal Bertone
Monk is at the end of Via Giuseppe Mirri 35, between Casal Bertone and Portonaccio, less than a kilometer from Tiburtina station, and has been active since 2014. The name pays tribute to Thelonious Sphere Monk, the pianist who made irregularity a rule.
Two farmhouses and a park
The club occupies two farmhouses, about 500 square meters in all, and two outdoor areas inside a one-hectare park. The official website presents it as a small rural world in a densely populated neighborhood: you arrive among apartment blocks and railway tracks and walk into a garden. In November the park is dark and cool, and life moves into the Teatro hall.
An open program
Concerts of every size, theater, workshops, book presentations, festivals, markets and family activities, with a bar and kitchen. The venue's page is Monk, and the updated program is on the official Monk website.
Barrier-free
The club states that its spaces are free of architectural barriers and open to all ages. If you use a wheelchair or have mobility difficulties this is a concrete fact, and not every concert venue in the city can offer it.
Casal Bertone and the area around Monk
Casal Bertone is a neighborhood in the eastern part of Rome, enclosed between the Tiburtina railway, Via Prenestina and Portonaccio, which grew up next to the rail yard.
Outskirts made of tracks
The railway shapes the whole area. Monk describes itself as born between Casalbertone and Portonaccio, and the area around Tiburtina, with the new station and the construction sites, has changed a lot in recent years. Clubs like this have brought here an audience that used to pass through the neighborhood only by train.
The Verano and San Lorenzo
Beyond the tracks, to the west, are the Verano Cemetery and the basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura. The San Lorenzo neighborhood, a student and nightlife area, is a few minutes away by taxi: it's the natural destination if you want a drink after the concert.
Villa Torlonia and Porta Maggiore
To the north, along Via Nomentana, is Villa Torlonia, with the Casino Nobile and the Casina delle Civette. To the south, beyond Via Prenestina, Porta Maggiore is a reminder that these outskirts too rest on ancient aqueducts.
How to get to Monk for Marlene Kuntz
Monk can be reached by metro line B or the regional trains FL1, FL2 and FL3 to Tiburtina, less than a kilometer away, or by buses 163, 409 and 545, listed on the club's website.
Metro and train
From Termini metro line B gets to Tiburtina in a few minutes, and from the station to Via Giuseppe Mirri it's about a 10-minute walk. Getting there is no problem. For the trip back it's best to check the time of the last metro on weekdays, because a concert that starts at nine ends late.
By bus
Lines 163, 409 and 545 serve the area. In the evening service thins out: for the exact route and the trip home, the Rome transport company's journey planner, set to the day and time of the concert, saves you waiting in the cold.
By car and taxi
Casal Bertone is outside the limited traffic zone and on a Tuesday evening parking on nearby streets is usually possible, with a little patience. If you're coming from far away, a taxi to Via Mirri or to Tiburtina is still the simplest option for the trip home.
If you're coming from outside Rome
Tiburtina is also a high-speed rail station. If you're coming from another city, though, you need to plan for a night in Rome: with the concert ending around 11, the trains for leaving the same evening are few or none.
Tickets for Marlene Kuntz at Monk
Tickets for «Marlene Kuntz suona Il vile» at Monk are sold on the authorized presale network linked to the date from Monk's official program page. Prices and availability are also shown there.
Buy early
In 2017 the tour for Il vile's 20th anniversary had several sold-out club dates. Monk's Teatro hall has a modest capacity: if you're sure you're going, don't wait until the week of the concert.
Information
For questions on access, accessibility and services Monk gives the address info@monkroma.it. It's also the right channel to ask if vibrating vests for deaf people are planned for this date.
How to plan the evening with Marlene Kuntz
The Marlene Kuntz concert at Monk starts at 21:00: arriving around 20:15 gives you time to get in, eat something at the club and find a spot in the hall.
Before the concert
On a Tuesday it's a workday for almost everyone. The most practical option is to leave the office, take metro line B and have dinner right at Monk. If you have the afternoon free you can take a walk at the Verano or Villa Torlonia, remembering that in November it gets dark early.
After the concert
Around 11 the concert is over. San Lorenzo and Pigneto are the nearest areas for a last drink, and if you're going home by public transport, better to head straight to Tiburtina.
Listening before you go
Just one task: Il vile, in full. If you have time, add Petali di candore, the video of the 1996 and 1997 tour, to see what the band was like when those songs were new.
Where to eat at Monk and nearby
Monk has its own kitchen with food trucks: having dinner at the club before the concert is the most convenient option.
The club's kitchen
The menu published on the website includes burgers, supplì, falafel and parmigiana, with vegan and gluten-free options. If you have allergies, tell the staff when you order.
Nearby
Between Casal Bertone and Portonaccio there are neighborhood trattorias and pizzerias, frequented mainly by residents. The widest choice is in San Lorenzo and Pigneto, both a few minutes away: late at night that's where you'll find kitchens still open.
Accessibility, children and practical information
Monk states that its spaces are free of architectural barriers and publishes an accessibility page with the rules for children, minors and deaf people.
With children
Children up to 12 get in free if accompanied by an adult with a ticket, one per adult. A rock concert at nine on a Tuesday evening isn't ideal for little ones, but with a curious 10 or 12-year-old it can become a memory. Noise-canceling headphones are essential.
Minors
Minors can attend only if accompanied by a parent or an adult relative with a signed authorization. If you're thinking of sending a teenage son or daughter with friends, keep this in mind before buying the ticket.
Vibrating vests
For some designated concerts Monk provides Woojer Vest 3 vests, which let deaf people feel the music through vibrations. For this date it's best to ask in advance.
November in Rome: the indoor concert season
In mid-November Rome enters the indoor concert season, and the club program is among the richest of the year.
The weather
November evenings are cool and often rainy. A waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes are the right outfit: the walk between Tiburtina and Via Mirri is short, but at night and in the rain you feel it.
The weeks at Monk
Monk's program around November 17 is busy: on November 8 Mark Guiliana with Beat 2.0, on the 19th Roberto Colella, on the 21st Henge with Mark The Hammer. In December Desire and Modena City Ramblers arrive. If you follow Italian rock you can build yourself a whole month in this hall.
A curious fact about Marlene Kuntz play Il vile at Monk, November 17, 2026
Marlene Kuntz's first concert wasn't held in a club but in a park: on May 13, 1989, at Parco Monviso in Cuneo, the group played some original songs, including 1° 2° 3° and La verità, and a Jack on Fire cover, Emozioni nascoste. It's a coincidence worth remembering when you arrive at Monk, a club that presents itself as a small rural world inside a one-hectare park.
Then there's the story of the name. The group's first singer, Alex Astegiano, suggested Marlene with Marlene Dietrich in mind, and Cristiano Godano added Kuntz, from the title of a Butthole Surfers song that in English sounds like a heavy insult. For a while the musicians considered a longer name, tied to their habit of using all kinds of objects to make sounds, then they dropped it, so as not to be mistaken for a novelty rock band.
Finally a detail about Il vile itself. One of the record's best-loved songs, Cenere, already existed in 1992, on a demo, with another title: La divina. Four years of work separate that first version from the album. It's proof of a method: Marlene Kuntz have never been in a hurry, and the record you hear at Monk is the result of years in the rehearsal room in Confreria.
Something nobody tells you about Marlene Kuntz play Il vile at Monk, November 17, 2026
For Marlene Kuntz, Monk is not a new venue. In 2024, during the tour for the 30th anniversary of Catartica, the last dates were held at Monk in Rome, in October, and at Legend Club in Milan, in December. The November 2026 concert is therefore a return: two years after closing the celebration of their first record in this hall, the band brings the second one here.
This has a practical consequence. If you were there in 2024 you already know how the Teatro hall sounds with Godano's and Tesio's guitars, and you know that Marlene Kuntz's audience arrives early and fills the front rows. If you're coming for the first time, you'd do well not to arrive at the last minute.
There's also a second thing rarely said. The lineup playing Il vile in 2026 is not the one that recorded it: Luca Bergia, drummer and founder, died in 2023, and on bass back then was Dan Solo. Today behind the drums sits Sergio Carnevale, formerly the drummer of Bluvertigo, who joined in 2021, and on bass is Luca Saporiti. The record is the same, the band playing it has gone through 30 years of changes, and you can hear it.
My tip for visiting Marlene Kuntz play Il vile at Monk, November 17, 2026
My tip is simple: arrive knowing the songs. An album played in full has its own dramaturgy, made of waiting, quiet passages and explosions, and you appreciate it much more if you know what comes next. In the days before the concert listen to Il vile from start to finish, without skipping anything, perhaps on headphones with the lyrics in front of you.
Then choose your spot in the hall carefully. At club concerts there's a rule: the front rows if you want to experience the concert with your body, the middle of the hall if you want balanced sound, the back near the bar if you'd rather move around. For Il vile, where the words matter as much as the guitars, the middle of the hall is the best choice.
Finally, the trip home. On a Tuesday evening, with the concert ending around 11, the risk is being stranded. Decide in advance if you're going home by metro, taxi or car, and let the people with you know. It seems like an organizational detail, but it's what decides if the evening ends well. For evenings organized for groups and companies, Tour Leader Pro builds custom programs.
Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned
It's known that Marlene Kuntz are from Piedmont. Less often remembered is how much their story has passed through Rome. The sixth album, Bianco sporco, was recorded in the first months of 2005 between Cuneo and Rome. In 2003, during the Senza peso tour, the band played the May Day Concert, and there met Nick Cave, one of Godano's favorite songwriters.
Marlene Kuntz returned to the Rome May Day concert several times: in 2010 with the Beautiful project, in which Godano sang in English together with Gianni Maroccolo and Howie B, and in 2016, after the release of Lunga attesa. In 2020 Godano took part in the concert on his own, recorded that year at the Auditorium in Rome.
And then there's the theater. From October 24 to 29, 2017 the band collaborated at Teatro Ambra Jovinelli on a show that provided a live score for Murnau's silent film The Haunted Castle, with Claudio Santamaria as narrator. The work earned Marlene Kuntz, in 2019, the Premio Le Maschere del Teatro Italiano for best music. Rome, in short, is one of the cities where this provincial band has written important pages.
The right photo to take at Marlene Kuntz play Il vile at Monk, November 17, 2026
In a hall like Monk's Teatro the lights are low and there's no shortage of stage smoke. The right photo isn't the one taken with flash from the front row, which spoils the view for others and gives a flat image: it's the one taken from the middle of the hall, a little higher up, when the lights all come on together during an explosion of guitars.
The classic subject is Cristiano Godano at the microphone, with his guitar slung over his shoulder, but the more interesting photo puts both guitars in the same frame, his and Riccardo Tesio's: since 1988 and 1989 they've been the heart of the band's sound. Tesio is the only member present since day one.
Outside the hall, the right photo is of Monk's park at night, with the two farmhouses lit and the evening's poster. It's an image that tells the story of the place well: a piece of countryside among the Tiburtina tracks.
A practical tip: take two or three photos at the start, then put your phone away. A record like Il vile is for listening to, not for filming in full, and whoever is behind you will be grateful.
Some important events that happened here in history
Monk's history as a cultural space begins in 2014, when the two farmhouses at the end of Via Giuseppe Mirri and the surrounding park opened to the city with concerts, theater, workshops, book presentations and family activities. From the start the club chose openness to all ages and the absence of architectural barriers.
For Marlene Kuntz's history, the event to remember is October 2024: the band closed here, together with the Milan date in December, the tour for the 30th anniversary of Catartica, with a set list built on songs from the 1990s. The 2026 concert picks up that thread, moving it to the second record.
Over the years the club's program has grown to include historic bands of international and Italian rock, jazz, singer-songwriters, electronic music and comedy. In summer life is in the park, in autumn and winter in the Teatro hall. More recently Monk introduced vibrating vests for deaf people and the Concerto Presto format, starting at seven in the evening.
The surrounding neighborhood is an outer district born with the railway. Casal Bertone and Portonaccio grew up next to the rail yard and Tiburtina station, today one of the main high-speed rail hubs. It's the right landscape for a band that has always preferred the provinces and the margins to the centers.
Who has passed through Marlene Kuntz play Il vile at Monk, November 17, 2026
Monk's Teatro hall has seen, first of all, Marlene Kuntz themselves, in October 2024, with the Catartica tour. The autumn 2026 program gives an idea of the level of the artists who play the club: Evan Dando's Lemonheads, the Fleshtones with their 50th anniversary show, Fink, Azymüth, JMSN, Leo Middea, the drummer Mark Guiliana, and after Marlene Kuntz Roberto Colella, Henge with Mark The Hammer, Desire and Modena City Ramblers.
In Marlene Kuntz's history, many names that matter have also passed through. Gianni Maroccolo, who coproduced Che cosa vedi with them and played bass on Bianco sporco and Uno. Skin, co-author of La canzone che scrivo per te and back alongside the band in 2019 for a version of Bella ciao. Paolo Conte on piano on Musa. Patti Smith on the Sanremo stage in 2012. Howie B producing Ricoveri virtuali e sexy solitudini. Elisa on Karma Clima.
And there are the musicians who have been part of the group: Alex Astegiano, Franco Ballatore, Gianluca Viano, Paolo Enria, Dan Solo, Rob Ellis, Davide Arneodo, and Luca Bergia, who founded the band with Riccardo Tesio in 1988. In 2018 Marlene Kuntz opened for Depeche Mode in Barolo, at the English group's invitation. It's a long story, and on the evening of November 17 a whole chapter of it passes through Casal Bertone.
