The production, Savà, presents Minimi sistemi e poco altro as an ironic journey among letters, great figures of history and contradictions of the present. The show was born, the synopsis says, with a single goal: to prove wrong Cesare Pavese, who in 1936 wrote to his sister that a man who writes letters instead of poems is finished. For Gattano, who returns to Ambra after Perestrojka e pancake, it is a return to a hall that has made the history of Italian comedy.

Who is behind it

Text by Daniele Gattano, written with the collaboration of Riccardo Crivez. Production by Savà, which also handles the tour in Italian theaters this season.

The genre

Stand-up comedy: a comedian alone on stage, with no set and no characters, speaking directly to the audience.

Minimi sistemi e poco altro: what it's about

Minimi sistemi e poco altro is a stand-up comedy show that starts from the epistles of some great historical figures to cross, with Daniele Gattano's eye and irony, decidedly contemporary themes.

Pavese and his sister

The starting point is a 1936 letter from Cesare Pavese to his sister Maria, in which the writer claims that a man who writes letters instead of poems is finished. In 2027, the synopsis says, Gattano disagrees.

Sylvia Plath and money

In 1956 Sylvia Plath writes to her mother that dreaming of international travel is one thing, dealing with limited money is another. On this, the synopsis specifies, Gattano agrees. It is the first hook to the present for anyone who has to reckon with their wallet.

Gandhi and Hitler

In 1939 Gandhi writes to Hitler beginning with "Dear friend." About this, the presentation says, Gattano prefers to talk directly in the theater, with whoever will be there.

The postscript

The synopsis closes by recalling that the best endings of letters are the ones with the PS. A hint of the tone of the evening: a comedy that plays with the forms of writing and with the audience's expectations.

A judgmental show: the bare minimum

In the presentation by Teatro Manzoni in Milan, which hosts the show on March 15, 2027, Minimi sistemi e poco altro is described as a judgmental show, more judgmental than funny, but funny all the same.

Well-founded prejudices

Gattano stages a series of prejudices, well-founded by his own account, about small things and tiny details: situations, gestures, brief encounters. These are the minimi sistemi of the title.

Warning bells

The prejudices work as small warning bells to avoid stumbles and regrets. The first example is self-ironic: never trust shows that in the synopsis call themselves stand-up comedy.

The title

The title, in our view, winks at the massimi sistemi of Galileo's dialogue, turning them upside down into minimi: not the great models of the universe, but the details of everyday life. It is a statement of poetics.

Two synopses

The two presentations, the production's and Manzoni's, tell the same show from two sides: the letters of great figures and the prejudices about small things. Chances are the two threads intertwine on stage.

Who is Daniele Gattano: the biography

Daniele Gattano is a stand-up comedian and writer born in Verbania on June 9. He debuted on television on Colorado on Italia 1 and since 2017 has been in the cast of Stand Up Comedy on Comedy Central.

The beginnings

The biography published by Accademia del Comico tells with irony that his career begins at nine with GiraMoooondo, a show written, directed and performed in his room. At 16 he starts studying acting in an evening course, once a week.

The theater debut

The following year the director and actor Alessandro Marchetti gives him the small role of Don Ferdinando in Goldoni's L'avaro. To give himself some gravitas, the same biography says, he starts reading almost all of Shakespeare, and meanwhile earns a diploma as a business correspondent in foreign languages.

Genoa and the return

Just of age, he attends the school of the Teatro Stabile di Genova, which lets him go the following year. He returns to Verbania and works as a waiter, fulfilling his mother's dream of opening a bar with him.

Television

After the debut on Colorado he lands on Real Time for the Diversity Media Awards. On Comedy Central he takes part in Stand Up Comedy, CCN, Comedians Solve World Problems, Zelig C-Lab and Comedy Central Presents, and on Sky in Il Salotto di Michela Giraud. He also took part in Battute? on Rai 2 and in Le Iene.

The shows

Before Minimi sistemi e poco altro he toured with Fuori, Male Male, Ananassy Baby and Perestrojka e pancake, which he himself had described as the last show he would ever do. At least until the next one, the production adds with irony.

Teaching

Gattano teaches stand-up comedy, writing and monologue preparation at Accademia del Comico, at its Rome branch.

Daniele Gattano's style

Daniele Gattano's style, according to the production's presentation, is direct, intelligent and deeply contemporary, able to turn small everyday absurdities into comic material.

Observation and self-irony

On stage he alternates observation, self-irony and personal storytelling. The themes range from relationships to contemporary society, up to the contradictions of adult life.

The writing

The synopses of his shows are already small comic pieces: surreal questions, improbable comparisons, postscripts. Those who read them get a taste of the rhythm of the evening.

Perestrojka e pancake

The previous show, presented at Ambra Jovinelli on April 23, 2025, opened with a series of questions: can you trust hotel shower shampoo? And what kind of rich would you be, becoming rich? A repertoire of minimal questions that anticipates today's title.

Minimi sistemi e poco altro: stand-up comedy in the theater

Minimi sistemi e poco altro is stand-up comedy in the form of a theater show: a single comedian, a microphone, a written and rehearsed text, which nonetheless lives on the direct relationship with the hall.

A written text

Unlike open mic nights, a touring show has a precise structure: a common thread, here the letters, and a sequence of pieces built to fit together. Riccardo Crivez's collaboration on the writing goes in this direction.

The audience as interlocutor

In stand-up the audience is not a mute spectator: laughter, silences and reactions change the timing of the evening. The synopsis says so in its own way, when it defers the most delicate subject to a direct conversation with whoever will be there.

No set

There are no sets to look at and no costume changes. Everything passes through the comedian's voice, rhythm and gaze. That is why even gallery seats, in an intimate theater like Ambra, work well.

The running time

The running time is not published. It's still wise to plan dinner and the trip home with some margin, especially for those who depend on Monday evening public transport.

Minimi sistemi e poco altro on tour

Minimi sistemi e poco altro is touring Italian theaters in the 2026 2027 season: it arrives in Rome on March 1, and Teatro Manzoni in Milan hosts it on March 15, 2027.

Manzoni in Milan

The Milan theater includes the show in its program and presents it as a judgmental show, more judgmental than funny: a definition Gattano has evidently chosen with care.

The production

The tour is produced by Savà, which publishes the dates on its website. Those who can't see the show in Rome can check there for the other stops.

How to organize Monday on the Esquiline Hill

With a 21:00 start on a Monday, the evening of Minimi sistemi e poco altro is easily organized around dinner on the Esquiline Hill or in Monti and a ride home by metro.

From work

Those leaving an office in the center have time to stop at home or to arrive directly: the Vittorio Emanuele stop on metro line A is a few minutes from the theater.

For travelers

Those staying near Termini can arrive on foot crossing the district. It is also a chance to see Santa Maria Maggiore lit up before dinner.

The way home

On the way out, metro line A from Vittorio Emanuele or the Termini lines take you back to the center. For last-run times it's wise to check the Atac website the same day.

At Ambra Jovinelli the comic monologue has a history more than a century long, from the character sketches of early 1900s variety to the spoken-word comedy of the 2000s.

Variety

Petrolini, Viviani, Totò: the comedians who made Jovinelli's fortune often worked alone, with a song, a character sketch, a monologue. The theater's audience was used to a direct relationship with the artist.

The 2001 reopening

Under the direction of Serena Dandini, Ambra became the reference point for the new comedy: Ascanio Celestini, Marco Paolini, Paolo Rossi, Lella Costa, the Guzzantis. Many of them brought monologues and voice-only shows here.

Stand-up

Gattano's stand-up comedy, with its observational humor, is the latest chapter of this history. In our view Ambra is the Roman theater where this genre feels most at home.

A curiosity about Daniele Gattano, Minimi sistemi e poco altro at Teatro Ambra Jovinelli, March 1, 2027

The funniest curiosity concerns the date. Minimi sistemi e poco altro is on at Ambra Jovinelli on March 1, 2027, and Teatro Jovinelli was inaugurated on March 3, 1909: Gattano's show falls two days before the hall's 118th birthday. A stand-up comedian celebrates, without knowing it, a theater born for variety.

The second curiosity is the declared target. Few comedy shows are born to prove a writer wrong: Minimi sistemi e poco altro is born, the synopsis says, to prove Cesare Pavese wrong and show that writing letters does not mean being finished at all. A literary goal for an evening of laughs: in our view it is the sign of a comedy that is not afraid of culture.

The third concerns the title. The minimi sistemi seem to turn upside down the massimi sistemi of Galileo's dialogue: where the scientist discussed the universe, Gattano discusses details. And poco altro, the title adds, with a flaunted modesty that is already a joke.

Teatro Ambra Jovinelli, the home of comedy

Teatro Ambra Jovinelli was inaugurated on March 3, 1909 by the impresario from Caserta Giuseppe Jovinelli as a luxury variety theater. It is on Via Guglielmo Pepe, on the Esquiline Hill, and is the only Roman theater built in the Art Nouveau style.

The Art Nouveau facade

The project was entrusted in 1907 to Ulderico Bencivenga, after contributions by Pietro Chiodelli and Giacomo Radiconcini: a two-story facade with wide openings, a crowning with arched lines, stucco pilasters decorated with flowers and a shell with a human face at the center of the entablature.

From variety to fire

Before the Great War Jovinelli was one of the most important variety theaters of the capital. In the 1950s it became a variety cinema under the name Ambra Jovinelli. On April 29, 1982 a fire destroyed the structure.

The rebirth

In July 1996 young artists occupied the abandoned theater. In 1997 the facade was placed under heritage protection. On January 25, 2001 Ambra reopened as a comedy theater with Serena Dandini as artistic director. Since December 26, 2010 the direction has been Fabrizia Pompilio's.

The hall today

The restoration tripled the interior volume without touching the exterior: the hall was raised by five meters, and below it the Piccolo Jovinelli and a bar were carved out. The cast-iron columns that held up the boxes now support the two galleries, those with the cheapest seats of the evening.

A thing nobody tells you about Daniele Gattano, Minimi sistemi e poco altro at Teatro Ambra Jovinelli, March 1, 2027

What is rarely said is that stand-up comedy at Ambra Jovinelli is not a foreign body, but a consequence. The theater was born for variety, for comedians who spoke directly to the audience: Petrolini, Viviani, Totò. A comedian alone on stage, with a microphone and a series of observations on everyday life, is the most direct heir of that tradition, far more than many costume comedies.

The second thing concerns Monday. Ambra hosts Gattano at the start of the week, on a single date outside the long runs of the season. For the audience, in our view, it is an advantage: an evening in the city less crowded than a Friday or a Saturday, and a way to start the week laughing.

The third thing concerns the seats. The second gallery stools cost €11.50: for a voice-only show, in which there is no set to see, the gallery is a sensible choice. My advice is to buy those seats early, since for a comedian with a young audience they are the first to go.

The advice I give you for visiting Daniele Gattano, Minimi sistemi e poco altro at Teatro Ambra Jovinelli, March 1, 2027

My advice is to arrive with a few letters in mind. You don't need to have read Pavese's letters or Sylvia Plath's, but knowing who they were helps catch the references. If you have time, look up Gandhi's 1939 letter to Hitler: the synopsis cites it only in passing, and the rest is to be discovered in the theater.

The second piece of advice concerns the ticket. With a wide price range, from €11.50 to €32.55, it's best to choose based on how you experience stand-up: those who want to catch every expression choose the orchestra, those who want to spend little the gallery. In both cases the voice carries.

The third concerns the time. The start is at 21:00 on a Monday: eat dinner early on the Esquiline Hill, around 19:30, or have an aperitif and eat afterward. Arriving at the theater a quarter of an hour early avoids the line at the foyer.

How to get to Ambra Jovinelli

Teatro Ambra Jovinelli is at Via Guglielmo Pepe 43, a short distance from Piazza Vittorio and Termini station: metro line A, Vittorio Emanuele stop, is the simplest solution.

By metro

From the Vittorio Emanuele stop, Via Guglielmo Pepe is reached on foot in a few minutes. Alternatively, get off at Termini, where lines A and B intersect, and continue on foot crossing the Esquiline Hill.

By train

Those arriving on regional trains can get off at Roma Laziali station, next to Termini, the closest to the theater.

By bus

For surface lines it's wise to use the Atac route planner, which shows the best combination and the times for the evening return.

By car

In the evening street parking on the Esquiline Hill is difficult: better to leave the car in a multistory car park around Termini and continue on foot.

Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned

It is well known that Ambra Jovinelli is the theater of Roman comedy. Much less often mentioned is that it was also a ring: in the 1940s and 1950s the hall hosted boxing events, with the ring set up in the theater. A story that, for a stand-up comedy show described as judgmental, has something fitting: observational comedy too is a direct confrontation, without protection.

The second rarely mentioned fact concerns Petrolini. In 1910 Ettore Petrolini signed with Giuseppe Jovinelli the contract that launched him. The documents of that relationship are kept in the Fondo Petrolini of the Burcardo Theater Library and Museum. The comedian who more than any other made the word a weapon was born, professionally, in this hall.

The third concerns Totò, who between 1919 and 1921 debuted at Ambra and became its favorite, presenting himself as an imitator of Gustavo De Marco. More than a century later, Gattano brings to the same stage his version of an ancient art: making a hall laugh by talking about small things.

The right photo to take at Daniele Gattano, Minimi sistemi e poco altro at Teatro Ambra Jovinelli, March 1, 2027

During the show the phone stays off: in stand-up comedy the relationship with the audience is everything, and a lit screen can be seen from the stage. The right photo is taken beforehand, on Via Guglielmo Pepe, of the lit Art Nouveau facade, with the shell and the human face at the center of the entablature.

The second, in keeping with the show, is a letter. A postcard of Rome bought on the Esquiline Hill, written and photographed in front of the theater before mailing it: a small gesture to prove Pavese wrong together with Gattano.

The third is taken in Piazza Vittorio, in the gardens at the center, in front of the Porta Alchemica with its enigmatic inscriptions: in the evening, in the light of the street lamps, it is one of the most mysterious images of the neighborhood.

Some important events that happened here in history

The history of Ambra Jovinelli is read through dates. On March 3, 1909 the theater opens with Raffaele Viviani and his sister Luisella, called by Giuseppe Jovinelli. In 1910 Ettore Petrolini signs the contract that launches him. Between 1919 and 1921 Totò debuts and becomes the audience's favorite. In the 1940s and 1950s the hall also hosts boxing matches.

In the 1950s the theater becomes a variety cinema under its current name, in the 1970s an adult cinema. On April 29, 1982 a fire destroys it. In July 1996 young artists occupy it, in 1997 the Ministry places the facade under protection, and on January 25, 2001 it reopens as a comedy theater under the direction of Serena Dandini.

On December 26, 2010 Fabrizia Pompilio's management begins. On April 23, 2025 Daniele Gattano presents Perestrojka e pancake there. On March 1, 2027 he returns with Minimi sistemi e poco altro, in the same week in which the theater turns 118.

Who has passed through Daniele Gattano, Minimi sistemi e poco altro at Teatro Ambra Jovinelli, March 1, 2027

The stage of Ambra Jovinelli has seen more than a century of Italian comedy pass through. In the Jovinelli family era there are Raffaele Viviani, Ettore Petrolini, Gustavo De Marco, Totò, and then Gennaro Pasquariello, Romolo Balzani, Claudio Villa, the De Rege brothers, Nino Taranto, Lino Banfi, Franco Franchi and Ciccio Ingrassia, Alberto Sordi, Fanfulla.

After the 2001 reopening came Ascanio Celestini, Marco Paolini, Lillo and Greg, Neri Marcorè, Valerio Mastandrea, Sabina and Corrado Guzzanti, Lella Costa and Paolo Rossi. Under Fabrizia Pompilio's management came Virginia Raffaele, Paola Cortellesi, Francesco Pannofino and the works of Mattia Torre. In the current season, among others, Luca Bizzarri and Arianna Porcelli Safonov pass through, other voices of spoken-word comedy.

On March 1, 2027 Daniele Gattano passes through, already a guest of the theater in 2025. And with him, through the letters of his show, ideally pass Cesare Pavese and his sister Maria, Sylvia Plath and her mother, Gandhi and the recipient of his most famous letter: the most improbable of casts, gathered on a variety stage.

The Esquiline Hill around Ambra Jovinelli

The Esquiline Hill is the district between Termini, Santa Maria Maggiore and Porta Maggiore, with the Umbertine buildings constructed around Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II after Italian unification.

Piazza Vittorio

A large square surrounded by porticoes. In the gardens at the center is the Porta Alchemica, to look for before the show.

The market

A few steps away is the Nuovo Mercato Esquilino, with products from half the world: a daytime market, to visit in the morning.

Toward Monti

Climbing toward Santa Maria Maggiore you reach the Monti district, with shops and small squares between the basilica and the Forums.

Where to eat before or after the show

The Esquiline Hill is the right neighborhood for those who want Chinese, Indian, Bengali, Ethiopian or Middle Eastern food at low prices. For a Roman trattoria it's best to head up toward Santa Maria Maggiore or move to Monti.

Before 21:00

An early dinner, around 19:30, in one of the places near the theater, or a long aperitif and dinner afterward.

After the show

On Monday evening many places are quieter: in Monti osterias and trattorias stay open even after 22:00.

Accessibility, age and practical information

After the restoration the hall of Ambra Jovinelli is five meters above street level: those with accessibility needs should contact the theater before buying, to get directions on routes and suitable seats.

Age

Minimi sistemi e poco altro is a stand-up comedy show for adults and older teens: the language of stand-up is direct, and the references to historical letters presuppose a minimum of general knowledge.

The gallery

The gallery stools are cheap seats but less comfortable: for those with back problems or mobility issues the orchestra is better.

Arriving on time

The Ambra foyer fills up quickly before shows: better to be in the theater a quarter of an hour before 21:00, also to find your seat unhurried, especially for those with a gallery ticket who have to reach it from the foyer while the rest of the audience enters the orchestra.

The phone

In stand-up comedy the comedian talks to the hall: lit phones and recordings disturb him and the audience. It's wise to switch them off before entering, and enjoy the evening without screens.

Those who have never seen him have the chance to discover him in the hall that more than any other in Rome represents spoken-word comedy. In both cases the advice is the same: buy early, because single dates sell out before long runs do.
