The event
Largo presents Codeine as the pioneers of slowcore: spacious guitars, glacial rhythms and a tension that explodes in slowness. The group began at Oberlin College, where Stephen Immerwahr (vocals and bass), Chris Brokaw (drums) and John Engle (guitar) met. The debut «Frigid Stars» came out in 1990; a Sub Pop contract and a European tour with Bastro followed.
«Dessau» is the album at the center of the tour. It was recorded in the summer of 1992 at Harold Dessau Recording in New York with Mike McMackin, but Immerwahr, convinced that the vocal tracks carried an unstable sound no one else could hear, decided to scrap it. Soon afterward the band finished the EP «Barely Real», and some songs were taken up again on the last album, «The White Birch» (1994). Brokaw left the group before the end of 1992.
The tape was found by Numero Group, a label that recovers 1990s recordings, about a decade before 2022. After persuading the musicians to listen again, the label released it on September 16, 2022: eight tracks, «Sea», «Jr», «Tom», «I Wonder», «Realize», «Something New», «Wird» and «Smoking Room», digitally and on vinyl.
