From Thursday, December 3 to Sunday, December 6, 2026, Stivalaccio Teatro presents «Arlecchino muto per spavento» (Harlequin Mute from Fright) at Teatro Sala Umberto, at Via della Mercede 50 in Rome, directed by Marco Zoppello. Full-price tickets run from 22 to 34 euros and are sold online.
The show starts from one of the most frequently performed scenarios in early eighteenth-century Paris, Luigi Riccoboni's «Arlequin muet par crainte», presented here in a modern version. In 1716 the Italian Comedians return to perform in the city theater after about fifteen years of exile; the troupe leader Riccoboni, known as Lelio, hires the Vicenza-born Harlequin Tommaso Visentini, who does not speak French. The remedy is to invent a scenario in which the servant becomes mute from fright.
Play, misunderstandings, love and drama intertwine through the fixed grimaces of the masks, with tangled plots that unravel in the characters' hands. Marco Zoppello is both director and Harlequin; on stage with him are Sara Allevi, Marie Coutance, Anna De Franceschi, Fabio Gorgolini, Michele Mori, Stefano Rota, Pierdomenico Simone and Maria Luisa Zaltron.
The company was founded in 2007 and received a Premio Ubu nomination in 2024. The masks are by Stefano Perocco di Meduna, the sets by Alberto Nonnato, the costumes by Licia Lucchese. The performance is in Italian.
