The lesser-known parks in Rome are neighborhood green areas, river corridors and nature reserves inside the city or on its edge. This guide covers twelve of them: Villa Ada, Parco delle Valli, Cervelletta, Mistica, Tenuta del Cavaliere, Pineto, Marcigliana, Insugherata, Monte Mario, Lago Ex SNIA, Aguzzano and Parco degli Scipioni. For each one you’ll find where to enter and what to check before you set out.
Almost all of them are free to enter. Many have no ticket office, café or posted hours, and it’s better to know that before you go. For the big picture, see our page on parks and villas in Rome.
Parks in Rome in the North: Villa Ada, Valli, Pineto and Marcigliana
Villa Ada
Villa Ada lies in the northern part of the city, between the Trieste and Parioli neighborhoods and Via Salaria, in Municipio II. The main entrances open onto Via Salaria at numbers 267, 273 and 275. Other gates are on Via di Ponte Salario, Via di Monte Antenne and Via Panama. The park is public and free, open from first light to sunset, with hours that change between summer and winter.
Without a car, the nearest stations are Sant’Agnese/Annibaliano and Libia on line B1, about a fifteen-minute walk to the eastern entrances. There are bike racks at the gates. The listing also mentions the summer festival season, so look up dates in the official programs.
Parco delle Valli – Conca d’Oro
Parco delle Valli follows the course of the Aniene River in the north of the city, between Conca d’Oro and Monte Sacro, in Municipio III. It isn’t a historic villa with gates and statues. It’s a long, narrow river corridor reclaimed from neglect. It is part of the Valle dell’Aniene Nature Reserve and is owned by the City of Rome.
The green area runs from Ponte delle Valli to the level of Via dei Prati Fiscali. It works as a neighborhood park and as an ecological corridor for the river. Entry is free.
Pineto Regional Urban Park – Pineta Sacchetti
Pineto covers a surviving stretch of countryside in the northwest, around Pineta Sacchetti. People often walk in without realizing it, through a shortcut or a gap between two apartment blocks. Inside is a valley of meadows and pines where the traffic noise fades within a few minutes.
It is a regional urban park and counts among the nature reserves. For hours and access rules, the listing points to the official information from the managing body.
Marcigliana Nature Reserve
Marcigliana has only one freely accessible public entrance: Via di Tor San Giovanni 301, where Casale Lucernari, home of the Casa del Parco visitor center, stands. Entry is free, and you don’t need to book for a self-guided walk. The Sentiero Natura (Nature Trail) starts here, a loop of about three kilometers, roughly two hours at an easy pace.
The reserve is run by RomaNatura. The phone number listed is 06.87121687. Guided hikes with park rangers are booked by writing to escursioni.romanatura@regione.lazio.it. By car, take Via Salaria or Via di Settebagni, exiting the Grande Raccordo Anulare ring road in the north.
Parks in Rome in the West and Northwest: Insugherata and Monte Mario
Insugherata Nature Reserve
Insugherata is a protected area wedged between Via Trionfale to the west and Via Cassia to the east, in the Ottavia and Tomba di Nerone districts. It is managed by RomaNatura and was established by Lazio regional law no. 29 of October 6, 1997.
Sources disagree on its size. The Lazio Region gives 697 hectares, while the figure of 740 hectares has circulated for years and appears on older signs. The difference comes from later boundary changes and work on the Grande Raccordo Anulare. Entry is free.
Monte Mario Nature Reserve
The reserve covers the northwestern slope of the city, between Via Trionfale and the Colli della Farnesina. RomaNatura manages it, with offices at Villa Mazzanti, Via Gomenizza 81. The reserve’s contact address is Via dei Casali di Santo Spirito 40, phone 06 35491587.
Entry is free, with no ticket and no reservation, through several gates: Piazzale Maresciallo Giardino, Viale del Parco Mellini, Via dei Casali di Santo Spirito and Via dei Colli della Farnesina. Buses 907, 913, 990, 991 and 999 climb toward Piazza delle Medaglie d’Oro and Via Trionfale. Buses 48 and 911 serve the Farnesina side.
Parks in Rome in the East: Cervelletta, Mistica, Tenuta del Cavaliere, Ex SNIA and Aguzzano
Cervelletta Park
Cervelletta is a piece of the Roman countryside left among the apartment buildings of Tor Sapienza, the public housing of Colli Aniene and the Rebibbia complex, straddling Municipio IV and V. It is neither a landscaped garden nor a villa with gravel paths.
Its most recognizable feature is the medieval tower, which rises from behind a row of poplars. Open meadows surround it. Go expecting the landscape of the Roman countryside, not a manicured park.
Parco Della Mistica
You reach Parco Della Mistica from Via della Tenuta della Mistica, in eastern Rome, in the area between Tor Sapienza, Tor Tre Teste and Torre Maura. Access is open and there’s no ticket to pay.
Organized activities in the equipped area follow their own seasonal schedules and should be confirmed with whoever runs them. By car, you leave the vehicle along the access road. By public transit, you get off at the surface-line stops in Tor Sapienza and on Via Prenestina, then walk. The listing recommends water, a hat and closed shoes.
Tenuta del Cavaliere
Tenuta del Cavaliere is the farm owned by Roma Capitale that occupies the hill and plain on the left bank of the Aniene, between Via Tiburtina and Via Collatina. It isn’t a museum and has no ticket office. It’s a working livestock farm, with stables and silos.
By car, leave the ring road at exit 14 and take Via della Tenuta del Cavaliere. By train, get off at Lunghezza on the FL2, but the walk is long and has no continuous sidewalk: a bicycle or a ride to the entrance is better.
Lago Ex SNIA
Lago Ex SNIA is in Municipio V, between Via Prenestina, Via di Portonaccio and Via di Casal Bertone. The pedestrian entrance is at Via di Portonaccio 230. The Casa del Parco delle Energie, which coordinates the care of the area, is at Via Prenestina 175.
There’s no ticket. The gate onto the lake opens every day from 10 a.m. until sunset, with hours guaranteed by the volunteers of the Forum Territoriale Permanente del Parco delle Energie. The metro C stops are Gardenie and Malatesta, about a ten-minute walk away. Trams 5, 14 and 19 run along Via Prenestina and are replaced by buses when there’s roadwork.
Aguzzano Urban Park
Aguzzano is in Municipio IV, in the triangle formed by San Basilio, Rebibbia and Casal de’ Pazzi. It isn’t a stop on a tourist itinerary. It’s a neighborhood park, the kind that doesn’t end up on postcards but keeps parts of the city alive.
If you expect a monumental villa, you’ll be disappointed. If you’re fine with meadows and simple walks, it gets more interesting after half an hour. The listing gives no data on hours and services, so check the official channels.
A Garden in the Center: Parco degli Scipioni
Parco degli Scipioni
Parco degli Scipioni is a public neighborhood garden between Via di Porta Latina and Via di Porta San Sebastiano, in the Celio district, right against the Aurelian Walls. It has no grand gate, ticket office or fixed route. You enter on foot, with a stroller or with a dog on a leash.
The name recalls the Tomb of the Scipios. According to the listing, one of the densest layers of archaeology in Rome runs beneath the lawns.
How to Choose Among Parks in Rome
The choice depends on how you’re getting around and how much walking you want to do. A few criteria, drawn from the listings:
- Metro: Villa Ada is a walk from line B1, and Lago Ex SNIA from line C.
- Marked trails: Marcigliana has a loop of about three kilometers.
- Reserves with a managing body: Insugherata and Monte Mario are run by RomaNatura.
- Roman countryside: Cervelletta, Mistica and Tenuta del Cavaliere.
- Neighborhood garden: Aguzzano and Parco degli Scipioni.
Before you leave, check hours and activities on the managing body’s website or on the listing for the place. If you’re looking for spots to eat outdoors, see our guide to Parks for Picnics, Barbecues and Outdoor Parties in Rome.
