Released in 1954 as a coproduction between Mexico and the United States, the film runs 89 minutes. The cast includes Dan O'Herlihy, Jaime Fernández, Felipe de Alba and José Chávez.

Buñuel starts from Daniel Defoe's novel and follows it with unusual faithfulness in its essential lines, without giving up his own poetic universe. The castaway learns to find food, build a shelter and put the space around him in order. What stays beyond his control is loneliness, which invades his thoughts, dreams and hallucinations.

With the arrival of Friday the isolation is broken, but the colonial relationship between master and servant also enters the scene, which the director observes with subtle irony. According to the description, Buñuel is less interested in exotic adventure than in the fate of a man who dominates nature and discovers he isn't enough for himself.
