Official presentation of La ilusión viaja en tranvía
Una delle sue commedie messicane più leggere e anarchiche.
Text from the official Cultura Roma Capitale page (service translation: “One of his lightest and most anarchic Mexican comedies”), source
In «La ilusión viaja en tranvía», Juan and Tobías work in Mexico City's transit system and discover that streetcar number 133, which they are fond of, is about to be withdrawn from service. After drinking too much they decide to take it out secretly for one last ride, picking up all kinds of passengers along the way.
The streetcar becomes a small observatory of the city: workers, butchers, children, bourgeois, police officers and ordinary people get on and off without anyone really checking the direction.
Beneath the comedy emerges a sympathy for the working-class world and Buñuel's taste for a reality that, freed from the stale rules of efficiency, rediscovers the free pleasure of adventure.
Both screenings are in the original version with Italian subtitles. The film is part of the series «Luis Buñuel: lo sguardo tagliente» (“Luis Buñuel: The Sharp Gaze”), running from November 1 to 30, 2026.
