Official presentation of Él by Luis Buñuel

Un melodramma feroce e potentissimo.

Text from the official Cultura Roma Capitale page (service translation: “A fierce and extremely powerful melodrama.”), source

Francisco is a wealthy Catholic bourgeois of irreproachable conduct who falls in love with Gloria and manages to marry her. After the wedding, love gives way to pathological jealousy: every glance, every encounter and every memory becomes proof of an imaginary betrayal.

According to the official presentation, «Él» is among Buñuel's most radical reflections on male desire and shows «con impressionante lucidità il funzionamento della paranoia» (with striking lucidity how paranoia works), without reducing the protagonist to a caricature.

Social respectability, religious faith and romantic possession end up speaking the same language, while the marital villa takes on the contours of a mental prison.

The film is Mexican, from 1953, and runs 92 minutes. The cast includes Arturo de Córdova, Delia Garcés, Aurora Walker, Carlos Martínez Baena, Manuel Dondé, Rafael Banquell, Fernando Casanova and Luis Beristáin. Screenings are in the original version with Italian subtitles.
