The event

The exhibition marks the museum’s centenary; it was founded on October 28, 1925 in the rooms of Palazzo Caffarelli on the Capitoline Hill. The collection has more than 3,000 works including paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, from the 19th century to the 2000s, and the selection on view shows over a hundred of them. Among the artists named in the press material are Giacomo Balla, Carlo Carrà, Mario Sironi, Fortunato Depero, Antonio Donghi, Renato Guttuso, Giorgio de Chirico and Antonietta Raphaël Mafai.

The story touches the major movements: late 19th-century art, Futurism, the Secession, the Scuola romana, Novecento and the Return to Order, and after the war Abstraction, Informel and the Neo-avant-garde. Since June 24, 2026 the display has been renewed, with 25 paintings and sculptures added or replaced; among the names that came in are De Nittis, Mafai and Severini.

The museum’s history marks the route: in 1925 the opening at Palazzo Caffarelli; in 1931 the reopening as “Galleria Mussolini,” curated by Antonio Muñoz, in the year of the first Quadriennale at Palazzo delle Esposizioni; in 1952 the new display at Palazzo Braschi; from 1963 to 1972 the home at Palazzo delle Esposizioni with Carlo Pietrangeli; in 1995 and 2011 the double inauguration at the current site.

The curators are Ilaria Miarelli Mariani and Arianna Angelelli, with Paola Lagonigro, Ilaria Arcangeli, Antonio Ferrara and Vanda Lisanti. The exhibition is promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura, and the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, and organized by Zètema Progetto Cultura; the catalogue is by Silvana Editoriale. Family workshops (aMICi), talks (Incontriamoci alla GAM) and, on November 10, 2026, a visit to the museum’s storage rooms are planned.
