What's hidden beyond a museum's exhibition rooms? This special tour is a chance to find out, entering the beating heart of Galleria d'Arte Moderna: the storerooms, a place usually not open to the public.
This is where a very rich collection is kept: about 4000 works including paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, only a small part of them on display. The tour will let you see up close the complex system for conserving the collections, go into the technical details and discover what's hidden behind the scenes of the museum. The route will continue in the exhibition GAM 100. Un secolo di Galleria Comunale 1925 - 2025, which celebrates the 100 years of this institution, telling the story of its collections.

«I depositi della GAM» takes you into the storerooms, a place normally not open to the public, where the museum keeps about 4000 works including paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints, only a small part of them on display. The route shows the system for conserving the collections and the technical details behind the scenes, then continues into the exhibition «GAM 100. Un secolo di Galleria Comunale 1925 - 2025».

The event is part of the «Incontriamoci alla GAM» series, which accompanies the exhibition. It's organized by Sovrintendenza Capitolina in collaboration with Zètema Progetto Cultura. For information and reservations you can call 060608.

Where it takes place: Galleria d’Arte Moderna

Galleria d’Arte Moderna is housed in the former 17th-century convent of San Giuseppe a Capo le Case, on Via Francesco Crispi. It found its permanent home here in 2011, after a history of moves: the collection was presented to the public in 1925 at Palazzo Caffarelli and then passed through Palazzo Braschi and Palazzo delle Esposizioni.

The museum's history page also notes that in 2025, for the centenary, a 17th-century mural painting by Sister Eufrasia della Croce was brought back to light.
