Where it takes place: Piazza Duomo, Orvieto

Piazza Duomo is the heart of the program: a large lit Christmas tree is planned there, and the market with the ice rink is held there, together with Piazza della Repubblica. The cathedral faces the square. Its construction began in 1290 at the wish of Pope Nicholas IV, with the aim of replacing the two churches of Santa Maria and San Costanzo with a single building. More than 20 artists worked on the facade, and Lorenzo Maitani was its master builder from the early 1300s until his death in 1330.

Another place named in the program is the Pozzo di San Patrizio, where the Albero di Luce returns. The well was built by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger between 1527 and 1537, at the wish of Clement VII, as a water reserve in case of a siege after the Sack of Rome. It is 54 meters deep and has 248 steps. For an overview of the city, see our page on Orvieto. For Christmas in the capital, there is the guide Christmas in Rome.
