The Teatro Nuovo, today named after Gian Carlo Menotti, was inaugurated on August 7, 1864 to a design by the municipal engineer Ireneo Aleandri. Spoleto's bourgeoisie had wanted it built because the Teatro Caio Melisso was judged too small and old-fashioned, Filippo Marignoli financed much of the work and to make room a convent with a church dedicated to Sant'Andrea was demolished in 1853.

The horseshoe-shaped hall has four tiers of boxes and a gallery, for an effective capacity of 772 seats. Since 1958 it has hosted the most important shows of the Festival dei Due Mondi. After the restoration of the 1990s it was returned to the public in 2007 and in 2010 took the name Menotti.

The composer

Ennio Morricone, born in Rome in 1928, wrote the scores for Sergio Leone's films from «A Fistful of Dollars» (1964) to «Once Upon a Time in America». He was nominated for the Oscar for «The Mission», a film that also earned him a BAFTA and a Golden Globe.

On February 25, 2007 he received the honorary Oscar, presented by Clint Eastwood, after five nominations without a win. On February 28, 2016 he won his first competitive Oscar, for the score of Quentin Tarantino's «The Hateful Eight».
