The event: Colombian Picós come to Rome

The title points to Barranquilla, the “Puerta de Oro de Colombia,” the port where the story is set. Between the 1960s and 1970s, merchant ships arriving from the Antilles carried raw materials and European machinery and, above all, vinyl records: the latest record releases from West Africa and other regions.

Those records still echo in the streets of the main Colombian Caribbean cities. Congolese soukous, Jamaican soca and Arab disco blend with champeta, salsa and cumbia through the Picós, an adaptation of the English pronunciation of “pick up”: lively sound systems decorated with images that often show symbols of power and revolutionary figures.

Picós are much more than mobile discos: they belong to neighborhood life, are handed down from generation to generation and are built by the whole community. They claim their African roots and mix them with the genres they meet; the DJs, the picoteros, move freely among them. For that reason, in the music critic’s reading, the Picó becomes a diasporic musical device, an antenna pointed toward Africa and able to pick up new signals.
