A bond with the Italian audience

The Rome announcement comes, the organizers write, after the sellout in a few hours of the Bologna concert: confirmation of a strong relationship with the Italian audience, which in Rome finds the scale of the big open-air festival.

Dopamine Chamber: the record Fontaines D.C. bring to Rome

At Rock in Roma Fontaines D.C. present live the songs from Dopamine Chamber, their fifth studio album, out on October 16, 2026 on XL Recordings, again produced by James Ford after his work on Romance.

Marianne, the first single

The album title was announced on August 16, 2026 on the band's social media, together with a snippet of Six Shot Morning, an unreleased song already played at concerts. The next day Marianne came out, the first single, which reached number two on the Irish chart and number 19 on the British one.

The summer of festivals

In summer 2026 the band returned to the stage after a series of concerts in Spain: on August 28 it headlined Reading Festival, on August 30 it closed Electric Picnic in Ireland, and the next day it announced two concerts at Slane Castle for June 2027.

What to expect from the set list

The set list isn't published. It's reasonable to expect a concert built on the new record, but a band with five albums behind it is unlikely to give up the songs that made it famous, from Starburster to Jackie Down the Line. The rest will be revealed on the evening of June 18.

Who Fontaines D.C. are: the biography

Fontaines D.C. are an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 2014: Grian Chatten on vocals, Conor Curley and Carlos O'Connell on guitars, Conor Deegan III on bass, Tom Coll on drums.

Music school and poetry

The five met at BIMM, a music school in the Liberties neighborhood of Dublin. What brought them together was a love of poetry: they self-published two collections, Vroom, inspired by Beat Generation poets like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, and Winding, inspired by Patrick Kavanagh, James Joyce and W. B. Yeats. None of those poems became a song, except Television Screens, born as a poem and ending up on the first album.

Where they come from

Grian Chatten was born in Barrow-in-Furness, in Cumbria, but grew up in Skerries, on the coast north of Dublin. Coll and Deegan come from Castlebar, in County Mayo, Curley from Emyvale, in County Monaghan, and O'Connell grew up in Madrid. Deegan often appears on stage wearing the jersey of the Mayo Gaelic football team.

The name

The name comes from Johnny Fontane, the singer and movie star who is Vito Corleone's godson in The Godfather. At first the band was called The Fontaines. When they found out that a group with the same name already existed in Los Angeles they added the initials D.C., which stand for Dublin City.

The early years

In 2017 their first self-produced singles came out, Liberty Belle, a tribute to the Liberties, and Hurricane Laughter. In 2018 Stereogum magazine named them a band to watch, they played Electric Picnic and signed with Partisan Records. They supported Shame in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Dogrel, the 2019 debut

The first album, Dogrel, came out on April 12, 2019. The title pays tribute to doggerel, Irish popular verse, and the record was recorded live to tape. The Guardian gave it five stars and called it a perfect debut. Rough Trade named it album of the year, BBC Radio 6 Music presenters voted it record of the year, and the Mercury Prize nomination followed. In 2019 the band played in 50 cities across Ireland, Europe and North America.

A Hero's Death and the race with Taylor Swift

The second album, A Hero's Death, came out on July 31, 2020. In midweek it was number one on the British chart with a lead of over 10,000 copies, but Taylor Swift moved up the release of Folklore and the Fontaines D.C. record stopped at number two, by 3,500 copies. The album was nominated for best rock album at the 2021 Grammys.

Skinty Fia and the first number one

Skinty Fia, released on April 22, 2022, was the band's first number one on the Irish and British charts, driven by Jackie Down the Line and I Love You. In 2023 Fontaines D.C. won the Brit Award for best international group. The same year Chatten released his first solo record, Chaos for the Fly, and the band recorded with Massive Attack and Young Fathers the charity EP Ceasefire for Doctors Without Borders.

Romance and the consecration

Romance, the fourth album, came out on August 23, 2024 on XL Recordings, produced by James Ford. It debuted at number two in the UK, doubling Skinty Fia's first-week sales, entered the top 10 in 12 European countries and was the band's first record to enter the American chart. Starburster, Favourite and In the Modern World were their first singles on the British chart. Two nominations at the 2025 Grammys followed, one for the Mercury Prize and a second Brit Award for best international group.

Film

The band's music accompanies Bird, Andrea Arnold's 2024 film, in which Carlos O'Connell makes his acting debut. The video for Bug, with Barry Keoghan, is edited with footage from the film. Starburster became the theme song of the series MobLand.

The Fontaines D.C. discography

The Fontaines D.C. discography includes four studio albums released and a fifth on the way, plus a live record recorded at Kilmainham Gaol, in Dublin.

Studio albums

  • 2019: Dogrel, Partisan Records.
  • 2020: A Hero's Death, Partisan Records.
  • 2022: Skinty Fia, Partisan Records.
  • 2024: Romance, XL Recordings.
  • 2026: Dopamine Chamber, XL Recordings, out on October 16.

The live record

On July 14, 2020 the band played from Kilmainham Gaol for the TV series Other Voices: the recording came out on vinyl for Record Store Day on June 12, 2021, as Live at Kilmainham Gaol.

Where to start

If you don't know them, start with Romance, the record closest to their sound today, and then go back to Dogrel to understand where they come from. Skinty Fia is the bridge between the two, and perhaps their most accomplished record.

A curious fact about Fontaines D.C. at Rock in Roma, Ippodromo delle Capannelle, June 18, 2027

The juiciest curious fact about Fontaines D.C., for a Roman audience, is that the Irish band owes its name to an Italian-American film. Johnny Fontane is the singer in The Godfather, Vito Corleone's godson who in the novel and the film asks his godfather for help getting a part in Hollywood. On screen he was played by Al Martino. Five young men from Dublin, in love with Irish poetry, chose as their name that of a crooner who came from the pen of Mario Puzo and the camera of Francis Ford Coppola.

The second curious fact concerns 2020. That year A Hero's Death was at the top of the British chart in midweek, and was overtaken only because Taylor Swift surprised everyone by moving up the release of Folklore: a 3,500-copy difference. Few alternative records can say they lost the top spot to the biggest pop star in the world.

The third links Rome to another June evening. 10 days earlier, on June 8, Hayley Williams sings at Cavea at Auditorium, and on her European tour the Irish dates are shared with none other than Fontaines D.C.

Ippodromo delle Capannelle, the home of Rock in Roma

Ippodromo delle Capannelle is the oldest racecourse in Italy, opened in 1881 on Via Appia Nuova, southeast of Rome. Since 2009 it has been the main venue of Rock in Roma.

A huge venue

The venue covers 140 hectares, with four grandstands and a parterre holding 20,000 people on race days and up to 45,000 for concerts. The stables can hold up to a thousand horses. It's owned by Roma Capitale.

The festival stages

According to the history published by the festival, in 2013 Rock in Roma expanded to the whole area and opened the white stage, an arena for 45,000 spectators. In 2014 came an arena with a variable capacity from 3,000 to 30,000 people. In 2016 the stages became two, with the #theitalianway project dedicated to Italian music. Since 2019 the Main Stage, the Black Stage, has been joined by the Red Stage, near the entrance, surrounded by greenery and with seating in the stands.

A track that lights up at night

On September 9, 2006 the racecourse's lighting system was switched on for the first time: 25 light towers with 550 floodlights of 2,000 watts each, designed not to sway in the wind and not to disturb the horses. They're the same lights that frame the festival evenings.

Something nobody tells you about Fontaines D.C. at Rock in Roma, Ippodromo delle Capannelle, June 18, 2027

What nobody tells you is that almost five hours pass between the gates opening and the start of the concert. The gates open at 17:00, Fontaines D.C. take the stage at 21:45. It's a long stretch, designed for the festival village, with bars, food stands and merchandise areas: if you want the PIT or a good spot in front of the stage, arrive early. If you only want the concert, you can afford to go in later.

The second thing concerns getting back. The concert ends late at night, and the options need to be planned beforehand. The festival says that at the end of some concerts special trains to Termini are put on, and in past years it has organized a shuttle bus service back to Termini station: arrangements and availability for 2027 should be checked on the official website in the preceding days. Among regular buses, the 664 loop line to Colli Albani has its last run at 02:00, according to the festival.

The third thing: you can bring food into the racecourse, but not drinks, except water bottles without caps. Water on sale costs €2. In June, with five hours under the late afternoon sun, it's worth knowing.

Tickets for Fontaines D.C. at Rock in Roma

Tickets for Fontaines D.C. on June 18, 2027 cost €56 plus presale fees for general admission standing and €81 plus fees for the PIT, according to the official concert page on the Rock in Roma website.

Where to buy

The festival sells tickets on its own website and on the official presale networks listed on the concert page. According to the festival FAQ, on concert days the racecourse box offices are also open, usually from 18:00, except for dates already sold out in presale. The organizers don't guarantee tickets bought on unofficial networks.

Children

At Rock in Roma children under six get in free. From age six up a regular ticket is required.

Refunds

Tickets can't be exchanged or refunded, unless the concert is canceled. No refund is given if the cancellation happens after the concert has started or for reasons of force majeure, bad weather included.

VIP Experience

The festival offers numbered VIP packages in limited availability, which don't include the ticket and aren't refundable. If you're considering them, read the conditions carefully before buying.

My tip for Fontaines D.C. at Rock in Roma, Ippodromo delle Capannelle, June 18, 2027

For Fontaines D.C. at Rock in Roma, the best plan is to arrive by train, on the FL4 from Termini, around 19:00, and decide how you'll get back before you leave. From Termini to Capannelle station, according to the festival, it takes just nine minutes. From the station to the entrance it's about 700 meters on foot. It's the fastest solution and the least exposed to Friday evening traffic on the Appia Nuova.

Second tip: if you want the PIT, arrive early. It's the area under the stage, and for a band that lives on physical energy like Fontaines D.C. it makes a difference. If you'd rather see the whole stage, with the lights and the crowd, choose general admission and settle further back, in the center.

Third tip: download the festival's official app beforehand and activate the wallet to pay for food and drinks. It's not mandatory, but it saves you lines at the registers. And bring ID, a light jacket for the night and walking shoes: the racecourse is big, and at the end of the evening you walk to the station.

How to get to Ippodromo delle Capannelle for Fontaines D.C.

Ippodromo delle Capannelle can be reached by train on the FL4 to Capannelle station, about 700 meters away, or by bus to Capannelle/Appia Nuova stop, 100 meters from the main entrance.

By train

The FL4 regional line leaves from Termini, toward Ciampino, Albano Laziale, Frascati and Velletri, and stops at Capannelle after about nine minutes. At the end of some concerts the festival says special trains to Termini are available.

By metro and bus

  • Metro A to Cinecittà, then bus 520, loop line Cinecittà, Capannelle, Ciampino airport, with the last run at 23:30.
  • Metro A to Colli Albani, then bus 664 toward Cosoleto, with the last run at 02:00.
  • Bus 789 from Viale America to Cinecittà, weekdays only, with the last run at 20:50.
  • On the way back, take the 664 at the Pizzo di Calabria stop, toward Colli Albani.

Times and routes should be checked again on the Rome transit company's journey planner close to the date.

By car and taxi

The festival estimates 30 minutes from the center. From the Grande Raccordo Anulare take exit 23, Appio San Giovanni, and follow Via Appia Nuova toward Rome. For parking the festival publishes a map and a booking service. Taxis can be booked with the itTaxi app or at 063570.

From the airports

From Fiumicino the Leonardo Express takes you to Termini, where you take the FL4. From Ciampino you walk about 900 meters to the train station and take the FL4 toward Termini, getting off at Capannelle.

Another well-known fact, yet one that's rarely mentioned

Everyone knows Fontaines D.C. are a post-punk band from Dublin. Few remember that they are first of all a band of readers: before releasing a record they printed two poetry collections, and the title of their debut, Dogrel, pays tribute to doggerel, Irish popular verse, the poetry of the people. The Guardian praised Chatten precisely for choosing to sing in his Dublin accent, without disguising himself as English or American.

The second well-known but rarely mentioned fact concerns awards. Fontaines D.C. have won the Brit Award for best international group twice, in 2023 and 2025: the list of winners in that category includes names like U2, R.E.M., Foo Fighters and Arcade Fire. A band born in a music school in the Liberties joined that company in less than 10 years.

The third concerns solidarity. In 2023 the band recorded with Massive Attack and Young Fathers the EP Ceasefire to raise funds for Doctors Without Borders in Gaza, and in 2026 they recorded a cover of Sinéad O'Connor's Black Boys on Mopeds for the charity album Help(2), supporting War Child.

The right photo to take at Fontaines D.C. at Rock in Roma, Ippodromo delle Capannelle, June 18, 2027

The right photo at Rock in Roma is taken before the concert, when the June light is still bright and the racecourse's light towers start switching on above the crowd. From a raised spot, or from the back of the area, the stage, the crowd and the sky of the Roman Campagna fit into a single frame, with the horse track behind.

During the concert, use your phone sparingly. Fontaines D.C. are a band to experience, not to film: an arm raised through all of Starburster blocks the view for those behind and gives back only a confused noise. One shot during the last song, when the lights open onto the crowd, is enough.

My tip: photograph the people. The friends who met listening to Dogrel, the girl in the Mayo jersey as a tribute to Deego, the crowd singing under the racecourse lights. You can find the stage in any archive. Your evening, no.

Some important events that happened here in history

Ippodromo delle Capannelle opened in 1881, but racing in this countryside is older: as early as 1844 Lord George Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, held two days of races on the land nearby, which until then had been a fox hunting reserve. In those years the Jockey Club Italiano and the Società degli Steeple Chases were founded.

Dates to remember

  • 1844: the first races on the land near today's racecourse.
  • 1881: Ippodromo delle Capannelle opens.
  • 1926: the venue is renovated.
  • October 2005: the all-weather track opens, the first in Italy with a synthetic surface.
  • September 9, 2006: the lighting system for night racing is switched on.
  • 2009: the racecourse becomes the home of Rock in Roma.
  • March 2014: after decades of flat racing only, harness racing arrives too, on a new inner track, after the closure of the Tor di Valle racecourse.
  • 2019: the Red Stage is added to the festival's Main Stage.

Historic races of Italian flat racing are run here, such as the Derby Italiano, the Premio Regina Elena and the Premio Tudini. The Grande Steeple Chase delle Capannelle was moved to Merano when the jumps track was decommissioned to make room for the harness racing one. The venue has also hosted the Cyclo-cross World Championships.

Who has passed through Fontaines D.C. at Rock in Roma, Ippodromo delle Capannelle, June 18, 2027

For over a century the horses and jockeys of Italian flat racing have passed through Ippodromo delle Capannelle, and before them the English aristocrats who brought racing to the Roman countryside, starting with Lord George Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, in 1844. The place soon attracted painters too: Giuseppe Gabani painted Ritorno dalle Capannelle in 1899, Pietro Sassi All'Ippodromo delle Capannelle in 1900, and Bob Demuyser portrayed Nortjet, winner of the 1981 Premio Tudini.

Since 2009 the musicians of Rock in Roma have passed through here, the festival that made the racecourse its headquarters: big international names on the Black Stage and, since 2016, the Italian artists of the #theitalianway project. The archive of past editions is published on the festival website, year by year.

On June 18, 2027 it's the turn of five young men from Dublin who started out writing poems and made it to the top of the Reading and Electric Picnic bills. On the stage of a racecourse built for flat racing, a band named after The Godfather: Rome has always had a soft spot for these crossovers.

Services and rules at Ippodromo for Rock in Roma

At Ippodromo delle Capannelle Rock in Roma provides a cloakroom, food stands, merchandise areas and a first aid station, according to the FAQ published by the festival.

Cloakroom and lost property

The cloakroom is near the main entrance. That's also where you'll find the security manager to contact for lost property.

First aid station

In the area there are two ambulances, one at the main entrance and one near the main stage, and a first aid room near the entrance, marked on the festival map.

Food, drinks, payments

You can come in with food, not with drinks, except water bottles without caps. At the food stands you can also pay with the QR wallet of the official app, which you can top up from your phone during the evening. Waste is sorted into paper, plastic, glass and organic.

Banned items

The list of banned items and behaviors is published on the festival website: read it before leaving, so you don't have to leave something at the entrance.

Accessibility at Rock in Roma

At Rock in Roma tickets for people with disabilities are bought by writing to diversamenteabili@the-base.it, according to the festival FAQ. The price varies by concert, plus presale fees.

Who is eligible

The ticket holder is the person with a disability, who must present a certificate of 100 percent disability with the right to a companion. With that ticket you access, together with one companion, a reserved area reached through a dedicated entrance.

The platform

For each concert a platform is set up, marked on the festival map. Only one companion can access it. If you have mobility difficulties, keep in mind that it's about 700 meters from the station to the entrance and about 100 from the bus stop.

Around Capannelle: the Appia and the aqueducts

Ippodromo delle Capannelle is in the area of Rome called Capannelle, along Via Appia Nuova, between the city and the Castelli Romani. The name, according to published sources, comes from the huts of the Roman Campagna that in the 19th century could be seen near the fork between Via Appia Nuova and Via Appia Pignatelli.

Aqueducts Park

The afternoon before the concert you can stop by Aqueducts Park, with the arches of the ancient aqueducts in the countryside: a walk in the green before five hours of festival.

The Appian Way

Not far away is the Appia Antica Park, with the Villa of the Quintilii. A tour on foot or by bike, in the morning, is the best way to reach the concert evening with Rome in your eyes.

Cinecittà

If you arrive by metro A at the Cinecittà stop, you're close to Cinecittà: for a band named after a film, a visit to the studios of Italian cinema before the concert is a fitting pairing.

Where to eat before and after Fontaines D.C.

Inside Rock in Roma there are bars and food stands open all evening, and the festival village usually stays open until 02:00 on concert nights.

Before the gates

If you arrive early for the PIT you can eat right inside the festival, or have a late lunch in the city. Between Cinecittà, Colli Albani and the Tuscolano, along metro A, there are neighborhood pizzerias, trattorias and rotisseries.

After the concert

The concert ends late and the area around the racecourse doesn't offer much at that hour. My advice is to eat inside the festival or in the city beforehand, and afterward think only about getting back.

The criterion

I don't name places: they change management more often than bands change set lists. For a five-hour concert, having water and a real meal in your stomach matters more than the right restaurant.

June in Rome: the season of open-air festivals

In mid-June Rome moves music outdoors: Rock in Roma at Capannelle, Cavea at Auditorium, the summer arenas. The days are the longest of the year, and evening concerts start while the sky is still bright.

The weather

June evenings are hot, but at the racecourse, open to the countryside, the night cools down. The festival doesn't refund for bad weather: check the forecast and bring a light jacket.

The June double

On June 8 Hayley Williams plays at Cavea at Auditorium Parco della Musica, and Fontaines D.C. share the Irish dates of her European tour with her. For the rest of the lineup there's our page on Rock in Roma.

For Fontaines D.C. at Capannelle I'll add one thing: listen to Romance and the first singles from Dopamine Chamber before you go, arrive by train, and stay until the last note. A band that in 10 years went from self-published poems to the Brit Awards deserves a whole evening, even if the stage is at the far end of Via Appia Nuova.
