For anyone planning a trip to the capital, Black Friday Roma is above all a chance to lock in the big expenses: the hotel, the train, the insurance, the things to put in your suitcase. In 2026 Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27, the day after American Thanksgiving, and the following Monday, November 30, is Cyber Monday. It’s better to leave alone everything in Rome that has a fixed, published price, like official museum tickets and city cards.
Data checked on October 3, 2026 against the U.S. Office of Personnel Management calendar of federal holidays, the Musei in Comune di Roma Capitale portal, the text of the Consumer Code published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale and the Encyclopedia Britannica. The dates of individual online stores for Black Friday week are expected, to be confirmed by the organizer of each campaign: every site announces them on its own, often a few days before.

Black Friday Roma at a glance
- What: Black Friday is the day of discounts that started in the United States after Thanksgiving. For anyone coming to Rome, it’s a way to book hotel, trains, insurance and travel accessories at a reduced price.
- When: in 2026 Black Friday is Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30. Many online stores stretch the offers to the whole week, with dates announced by each seller.
- Where: the offers that are useful for a trip to Rome are online, on hotel booking platforms, on the websites of the railway companies and in travel gear stores.
- What not to buy: official tickets for Rome’s museums and the Roma Pass have fixed rates. The official rate of the 48-hour Roma Pass is €38.00, and the rate of the 72-hour one is €62.90, according to the Musei in Comune di Roma portal.
- Good to know: in Italy, under Article 17-bis of the Consumer Code, every discount must state as the previous price the lowest one applied in the 30 days before the reduction.
- Today: for a trip to Rome in December or early next year, Black Friday is the right moment to lock in rooms with free cancellation and reduced-fare train tickets.
Where does Black Friday come from, and why is the story of accounts “in the black” a legend?
The explanation that circulates most is this: on the Friday after Thanksgiving, American stores went from red to black in their account books, that is, from loss to profit. It’s a tidy story, but it comes later. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the name was born in Philadelphia in the 1960s, from the city police, who used it for the day of chaos between Thanksgiving Thursday and the Army-Navy football game on Saturday.
The center filled with people who came in from the outskirts for Christmas shopping: traffic, accidents, shoplifting, very long shifts for the officers. Merchants tried to change the name to “Big Friday,” without success. Only in the 1980s did the term spread across the whole country with the positive meaning we know, and the accounting reading was built after the fact. It’s a good reminder for the rest of the article: in the world of offers, stories that sound good need to be checked.
In Italy Black Friday arrived with e-commerce, and today it effectively takes up a whole week, sometimes more. There is no official calendar: every chain and every platform decides when to start and when to end. The only sure reference is still the American calendar, because Black Friday is always the day after the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving 2026, according to the OPM federal calendar, falls on Thursday, November 26. Hence the date of Friday, November 27.
Then there is an Italian rule the reader should know. Since July 1, 2023, Article 17-bis of the Consumer Code
requires anyone announcing a reduction to state the previous price, that is, the lowest one applied to the public in the 30 days before the discount. If a price was inflated in early November and then “discounted” on the 27th, the percentage shown must still start from the lowest price of the month. It’s a check worth doing, during Black Friday Roma, on every major purchase.
What should you buy on Black Friday if you’re coming to Rome?
The advice is to start from whatever weighs most on the budget and has moving prices. For a trip to Rome, in this order: lodging, transport to get to the city, insurance coverage, then experiences sold by private platforms and things for the trip. The higher and more flexible the expense, the more sense Black Friday makes. The lower or more regulated it is, the less it’s worth waiting for.
The hotel: the expense that moves the most
Hotel booking platforms use Black Friday to fill the slow months, and in Rome the most interesting periods are January, February and the weeks of December away from the holidays. On Booking.com and on Hotels.com it’s worth filtering for free cancellation: lock in the room during Black Friday Roma and, if you find something better in December, you can still cancel. Non-refundable rates are lower, but they tie you to dates you may not have decided on yet at the end of November.
Look at the neighborhood before the price. Trastevere, Monti and Rione Ponte let you walk around on foot in the evening. Prati is convenient for the Vatican. The Termini area is practical if you arrive by train, less pleasant after dinner. Check the tourist tax line too, which in Rome is paid at the property and is usually not included in the total shown online: the amount depends on the hotel category and is published by Roma Capitale.
The train: Italo, Trenitalia and comparison sites
Railway companies often launch promotions at the end of November, with discount codes or reduced fares on future dates. On Italo the offers show up directly at purchase. With Trainline you compare the fares of several companies on the same screen. The detail to look at is the fare: the cheapest ones often don’t allow changes. Schedules and frequencies are on the operator’s website, and they change with the December winter timetable.
Travel insurance
It’s the item almost nobody buys on sale, and yet it’s the one that gets forgotten most often. A policy that covers cancellation, medical expenses and baggage makes sense above all if you pay in advance for a hotel and non-refundable trains. ViaggiSicuri lets you compare coverage and limits: read the exclusions, especially if you’re traveling with elderly people or with known health problems.
Experiences and tours from private platforms
Here Black Friday Roma can really save you money, because resellers set the prices themselves. On GetYourGuide and on Tiqets you find guided tours by third-party operators, dinners, cooking classes, day trips out of town. The discount, when there is one, applies to the added service: the explanation, the small group, the transport, the tasting. The cost of the entrance ticket included in the package stays the official one.
What shouldn’t you buy with Black Friday in Rome?
In our opinion the most common mistake is waiting for Black Friday to buy museum tickets. The official sites sell at published rates, set by Roma Capitale, the Ministry of Culture or the Holy See, and they don’t lower them for a commercial campaign. Waiting until the end of November for an entrance to the Colosseum or the Vatican Museums doesn’t save you anything. It only means you find fewer time slots available, especially for December weekends and for the Immaculate Conception long weekend.

The same goes for the Roma Pass. The Musei in Comune di Roma portal gives a rate of €38.00 for the 48-hour version, with free entrance to one museum or site of the circuit and unlimited public transport on the urban network. For the 72-hour version the rate is €62.90, with two free entrances. Many articles online still report old, lower figures: the sources don’t agree, and the official site at the time of purchase is what counts. A “Black Friday discount” on the Roma Pass, if you see one, should be looked at with suspicion.
Another frequent stumbling block is sites with names similar to the official ones. Searching for Vatican Museums tickets, you run into domains that imitate the Holy See’s site and resell entrances with a markup, sometimes presented as a Black Friday offer. The official site is museivaticani.va: check the address before entering your card. For the Colosseum, the official ticket office is the one linked to the website of the Colosseum Archaeological Park.
Where should you go in Rome between late November and January?
People who use Black Friday to book usually travel in one of three periods: the first weeks of December, the Christmas and New Year holidays, or January and February, the quietest months. Each has its own rules. In early December the city is already lit up and the museums are still livable. Between Christmas and Epiphany there are more events and more crowds. In January you find the lowest rates and the emptiest museums, with short days and more rain.
To build your program, start from our collection of tourist attractions in Rome, which brings together archaeological sites, churches, squares and viewpoints, with hours and practical directions. For rainy days and dark winter afternoons, keep the page on Rome’s museums handy: from the big circuits like the Capitoline Museums and Galleria Borghese to the smaller collections, often less crowded and better suited to a short visit.
The December calendar adds markets, concerts and nativity scenes in the churches. For the dates of the current year, check the all events section, which we update as organizers publish their programs. If you have a free day, the destinations near Rome that you can reach by train, like Tivoli or the Castelli Romani, are a real alternative to the city on sunny days.
Trastevere deserves an evening of its own, in any season. The neighborhood is a few steps from the historic center, but you walk it without hurry: Santa Maria in Trastevere, the streets around Piazza di San Cosimato, the climb up the Janiculum if you still have legs. For dinner, the Estate Romana restaurant map collects addresses divided by area. On Fridays and Saturdays in December it’s best to book.
When should you book and how do you organize around Black Friday Roma?
This article comes out about 20 days before Black Friday, and not by chance. Three weeks are enough to do things calmly: decide the dates of the trip, mark two or three possible hotels, check current prices. That way on November 27 you’ll be able to tell a real discount from a fake one, and you can compare the price of the day with the one you wrote down. Without a reference, the percentage in red tells you nothing.
A practical sequence, for anyone traveling in December or early next year. Now: set your dates and book right away, at full price, the official museum tickets with limited numbers, like the Vatican Museums, Galleria Borghese or the Colosseum on holidays. During Black Friday week: hotel with free cancellation, trains, insurance, private experiences. After Cyber Monday: check your bookings, save the confirmations on your phone and print the ones you need offline.
For things to buy online the reasoning is different. If you need a new suitcase or a power bank for the trip, order during Black Friday and have it delivered at home: what counts is the estimated delivery date at the time of the order, and at the end of November couriers are under pressure. Having it shipped to your hotel in Rome is possible only if the property accepts it: ask first by email, giving the name and dates of the reservation.
Variations: couples, families, friends
For a couple, Black Friday Roma serves above all to choose a better hotel for the same spend, maybe in the center instead of the outskirts. For a family with children, connecting rooms or apartments matter, and they run out first, and the Roma Pass needs to be evaluated carefully, because minors often get free or reduced entrance to city and state museums. For a group of friends the critical point is cancellation: with so many people, the chance that someone drops out is high.
Black Friday Roma purchases for the trip: suitcase, tech, reading
Below are the categories that, in our opinion, are worth a look during Black Friday if you’re preparing a trip to Rome. For each category there are several alternatives: in the week of the discounts the most requested models sell out fast, and it’s good to already have a backup plan. Prices change by the hour, so we don’t list them: check the price of the previous 30 days, as the law requires.

Frequently asked questions
When is Black Friday 2026?
Black Friday 2026 is Friday, November 27. It always falls on the day after American Thanksgiving, which in 2026, according to the United States federal calendar, is Thursday, November 26. Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30. Many online stores stretch the offers to a week or more, with dates that each one announces on its own.
Do Rome’s museums offer Black Friday discounts?
No, official tickets for Rome’s museums have fixed rates. They are set by Roma Capitale, the Ministry of Culture or the Holy See, and they don’t follow commercial campaigns. The discounts you see in those days generally concern packages from private operators, where the reduction applies to the added services and not to the entrance.
Is it worth buying the Roma Pass during Black Friday?
There’s no reason to wait for Black Friday for the Roma Pass. The price is set and published on the Musei in Comune di Roma portal: the rate is €38.00 for the 48-hour one, the rate of the 72-hour one is €62.90, with one or two free entrances and public transport included. It’s worth buying it when you’ve decided your dates.
What should you book on Black Friday for a trip to Rome?
It’s worth booking the hotel, the trains, travel insurance and experiences from private operators. These are the items with variable prices, where the promotions are real. For the hotel choose a rate with free cancellation, so you can cancel if you find something better in the following weeks.
How do you recognize a real discount during Black Friday?
The previous price shown must be the lowest of the 30 days before the discount. This is required by Article 17-bis of the Consumer Code, in force since July 2023. The surest way is still to write down prices a few weeks earlier, so you can compare them with the ones on offer day.
