An old actor of Shakespeare's work finds himself isolated alone on a stage, with a light focused on his chair, dressed in a loose coat that is more a nightgown than a king's attire, and he remembers.
The actor remembers and the king remembers, he remembers the first act when there was a court, a body of guards, three daughters and something more than a nightgown.
His fool has stayed fond of him, and stays with him to remind him that he is no longer the man he used to be, the man of the first act, he has no kingdom but above all he no longer has anyone to have the fool beaten.
The tragedy remains a tragedy, but a very ironic one, as Shakespeare's words can be if you want them to, and the two characters ride the text and ride the stage and sing. They sing and play. They play a banjo that has nothing to do with Elizabethan theater, and the spirituals have nothing to do with Elizabethan theater either, but they sing them, and the policeman who was in the king's service and now drives buses in the city of Princeton has nothing to do with the tragedy either, but in this theater you can.
