What Teatro Italia is and what you hear

The official site describes a program that goes from drama to dance, from concerts to musicals, with room also for experimentation and theater in foreign languages. Outside show nights the building hosts conferences, seminars and university lessons, mostly in the two smaller rooms. Among the performers who have trod the stage, the theater recalls Nando Gazzolo, Gianrico Tedeschi, Rita Forte and Alfredo Pedullà.

The 2026/2027 season published on the site gives a clear idea of the profile: a lot of live music in the form of tribute (Celentano, Pink Floyd, Queen, Zucchero), soul and gospel, ballet and tango, shows for families around Christmas and a New Year's Eve night on December 31, 2026 with the Orchestraccia. On January 28, 2027 a concert by Anna Oxa is announced, and on April 4 Maledizioni by Adamo Romano.

In our judgment you shouldn't read the program as a simple sequence of tribute nights. Alongside the musical tributes there are ballet, tango, dance theater and drama, and the 1930 building is worth arriving early just to look at it calmly.

A curiosity about Teatro Italia

The theater was born from the world of the railways. Construction began in 1928 to a design by the architect Angiolo Mazzoni, with the engineer Efisio Vodret and the sculptor Attilio Selva. The works were paid for by the railway administration and finished in a little over two years. The inauguration, on June 1, 1930, was entrusted to a concert by Pietro Mascagni in front of the leadership of the Associazione Nazionale Ferrovieri. Mazzoni was the chief architect of the Ferrovie dello Stato and of the Ministry of Communications. He is the same designer who was given the commission for the new Termini station, whose works were suspended during the war. In the 1950s the hall closed as a theater and became a cinema, the Universal. After the 2005 renovation it returned to the stage in February 2006 under the name Teatro Italia, under the direction of Pietro Longhi.

Something nobody tells you about Teatro Italia

If you come by car, you have an alternative to circling the block. The theater has an agreement with a garage at Via Como 60, about 200 meters away, which applies a rate of €3 an hour for spectators and stays open until 01:00. The garage answers at 06 89413016 and 392 8487349, also on WhatsApp. Teatro Italia, besides, doesn't fall within the limited traffic zones, so you don't need a ZTL permit.

Upcoming events at Teatro Italia

On our site there are already listings for some events of the season: Fire of Georgia with the Royal National Ballet of Georgia on December 10, 2026, Anna Oxa on January 28, 2027, Adamo Romano in Maledizioni in April and ABBAdream on May 22, 2027. For the rest of the program, use the Shows page of teatroitalia.info.

How do you get to Teatro Italia?

By metro B the theater is 450 meters from the Policlinico stop and 600 meters from the Bologna stop. The site also notes direct buses from Termini station and Tiburtina station, without giving the lines. To build the route from your starting point, use the ATAC route planner.

My advice for Teatro Italia

My advice is to look at the offers before buying at full price. If you are under 30 or a student, the theater sells tickets from €15 in all sections. If you plan to see several titles in the season, the pass for four shows of your choice lowers the full price by 15%. The balconies of an 800-seat hall are a sensible choice for dance shows, where the overall view of the stage matters.

The neighborhood around: Nomentano

Nomentano is the fifth neighborhood of Rome (Q. V), bounded by Via Nomentana, Via Tiburtina, the Tangenziale Est and the Aurelian Walls. On Via Bari itself is the Church of the Santi Sette Fondatori, while in Piazza Bologna, served by the metro B stop 600 meters from the theater, there is the rationalist post office building designed by Mario Ridolfi in 1933. On Via Nomentana side opens Villa Torlonia, with the Jewish catacombs underground.
