«Los olvidados» tells the life of the abandoned kids of Mexico City: Pedro falls under the influence of Jaibo, who has just escaped from reform school. Buñuel observes children without families, beggars, blind men and petty criminals without offering humanitarian consolation, and shows how poverty doesn't make people better and how victims can in turn become executioners.
Social realism mixes with dreams, obsessions and sudden apparitions of the unconscious. «Los olvidados» runs 85 minutes and stars Alfonso Mejía, Estela Inda, Miguel Inclán and Roberto Cobo. After a hostile reception in Mexico it won the Best Director award at Cannes and brought Buñuel back to the center of international attention.
«Los olvidados» is in the original version with Italian subtitles. The program lists two dates: November 1 and November 10, 2026, the latter listed as dog friendly. The same series also features the double bill with Un chien andalou and L'âge d'or.
Where it takes place: Casa del Cinema
The cinema is in Villa Borghese, in the Casina delle Rose, a building owned by the City of Rome and restored to house Casa del Cinema, inaugurated on September 18, 2004. The idea for the project came from journalist Felice Laudadio, its first director.
