The event
Written and directed by Jan Fabre in 2004, the show is his poetic perspective on the work of Antonin Artaud, the visionary of the theater who founded the Théâtre de la Cruauté in 1938. That cruelty, the presentation explains, is not physical but spiritual: an invitation to return to a raw, unfiltered truth.
Artaud looked for a secret ritual to awaken the divine within himself and went to the Indian tribes, seeking purification and self-discovery. Hence Fabre's text, which quotes the line "I strip myself of my body down to the bone" and goes on to say that language must become a cry again.
Irene Urciuoli performs. Text, concept and direction are by Jan Fabre, translation by Franco Paris, dramaturgy by Miet Martens, lighting and technical design by Wout Janssens. The production is by Troubleyn/Jan Fabre and Carnezzeria.
Where it takes place: Teatro Vascello
The Vascello stands in Monteverde and takes its name from the movie house that occupied the same building, opened in 1946; since 1989 it has been a theater, with a flexible hall and a 400-seat tiered seating bank.
Those coming from the neighborhood will find the guide to Monteverde and the page of Teatro Vascello; the same hall also hosts La poésie de la résistance, again by Jan Fabre.
