Thursdays at the GNAMC is the special evening opening of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, at Viale delle Belle Arti 131 in Rome: every Thursday from September 10 to December 17, 2026, from 19:00 to 23:00, with last entry at 22:00, the museum stays open for the permanent collection and the current exhibitions. The evening ticket costs €10, except for the free admissions provided by law, as the Gallery's official website indicates. The initiative runs every Thursday except November 5, 2026, and the calendar may change. The museum does not close between daytime and evening hours: after 18:15, last entry at the regular rate, you already enter at the evening rate. The Gallery can be reached by tram, with the Galleria Arte Moderna stop a few meters from the entrance, or by subway to Flaminio station and then on foot. Tickets are bought at the ticket office or through the authorized presale network reachable from the official website of the Galleria Nazionale.

A national museum open until 23:00, with Klimt, Van Gogh, Modigliani and de Chirico within reach and the rooms almost empty: in Rome that doesn't happen often, and when it does it's worth taking advantage. The Thursdays at the Galleria Nazionale are, in our judgment, the best way to visit this museum: Bazzani's building has a different light in the evening, the public is different, and €10 for four hours of modern art is an honest price.

Thursdays at the GNAMC in brief

Thursdays at the GNAMC is the program of evening openings of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea: from 19:00 to 23:00, last entry at 22:00, every Thursday from September 10 to December 17, 2026 except November 5, with a ticket at €10.

The dates that remain

Between October and December the scheduled Thursdays are October 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, November 12, 19 and 26, and December 3, 10 and 17. On November 5 the museum does not open in the evening. The calendar may change: before leaving home, a check on the official website is always a good idea.

What the ticket includes

The 10-euro evening ticket opens the permanent collection and the current exhibitions. It is a single ticket: there are no separate surcharges for the temporary exhibitions included in the museum's route.

The passage from day to evening

The Gallery stays open without interruption. The last entry at the regular rate is at 18:15. After that time you already pay the evening rate. In practice you can enter as late as 18:30 with the 10-euro ticket and stay until 23:00.

The special initiatives

The museum notes that special initiatives may be organized on the occasion of the evenings, announced on the official website. It's worth checking the event page in the week of the visit.

What to see in the evening at the Galleria Nazionale

In the evening at the Galleria Nazionale you see everything you see by day: the permanent collection, with about 20,000 works among paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, design and photography, and the current exhibitions. With four hours available, it's best to choose.

The masterpieces indicated by the museum

The Gallery proposes a selection of masterpieces that is a perfect thread for an evening: Dreams by Vittorio Corcos, The Three Ages by Gustav Klimt, After the Bath by Edgar Degas, the Portrait of Hanka Zborowska by Amedeo Modigliani, Mobile by Alexander Calder, The Gardener by Vincent van Gogh, Coppa Chimerica by Hans Arp, Dynamic Expansion + Speed by Giacomo Balla and Hector and Andromache by Giorgio de Chirico. Nine works, an hour and a half at an easy pace.

Design in the rooms

Since April 2026 the collection route has been in dialogue with design: seating, objects, wallpapers and draperies made with major Italian companies. The museum says it wants to make the rooms more comfortable and invite visitors to live in them. In the evening, with fewer people, it is the right moment to try it: you sit down in front of a painting and stay.

Marinella Senatore, artist of the year

Until December 31, 2026 a room is devoted to Marinella Senatore, the Gallery's artist of the year, with more than 40 works among drawings, collages and tapestries, including the four large tapestries The Theatre of Commons and the luminous sculpture Remember The First Time You Saw Your Name. A luminous sculpture seen in the evening is one more reason to choose Thursday.

One room at a time

In the evening a simple rule matters even more: better to see three rooms well than to cross 30. The Gallery is built for a long visit, with routes that widen into wings and side rooms. On Thursday, with the museum quieter, you can choose a core, for example early 20th-century Italy with Balla and de Chirico, and devote a full hour to it, sitting on the design seating placed in the rooms.

The autumn exhibitions on GNAMC Thursdays

Over the course of the evening Thursdays the temporary exhibitions change, and this lets you come back several times and find something new each time. Here is what you meet in the different weeks.

Fendi and Karl Lagerfeld, until October 25

Until October 25, 2026 After Un percorso di lavoro. Fendi / Karl Lagerfeld 1985 is open, conceived by Maria Grazia Chiuri and curated by Maria Luisa Frisa, which restages the exhibition inaugurated in the same museum on October 5, 1985. The useful Thursdays to see it are October 1, 8, 15 and 22.

Luigi e Iango, October 13 to November 29

From October 13 to November 29 the Gallery hosts Luigi e Iango. Corpi speciali, over 200 photographs by the duo formed by Luigi Murenu and Iango Henzi, curated by Francesca Alfano Miglietti, covered in the page Luigi e Iango at the Galleria Nazionale. It falls within the Thursdays from October 15 to November 26.

Marina Abramović, from November 18

From November 18, 2026 the major Marina Abramović exhibition, Historical Works and Transforming Energy, arrives, open until April 4, 2027. The useful evenings within the Thursday program are five: November 19 and 26, December 3, 10 and 17. Everything about the exhibition is in the page Marina Abramović at the Galleria Nazionale.

Which Thursday to choose

If you have to choose a single evening, October 15 or 22 catch Fendi, Luigi e Iango and Senatore together. If you want Abramović, the late-November Thursdays are less crowded than those of December, when the end of the evening program is near.

The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, the venue

The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea is at Viale delle Belle Arti 131, in the valley of the Academies on the edge of Villa Borghese, in a building designed by Cesare Bazzani and completed in 1911. It is a Ministry of Culture museum with special autonomy since 2014.

Bazzani's building

About 15,000 square meters of the building are devoted to exhibition spaces and services, and the exhibition proper occupies about 10,000. All the spaces are air-conditioned. It is a big museum, and in the evening, with four hours, you have to choose before going in.

The expansions

Bazzani himself signed a first expansion between 1933 and 1934. A second expansion, designed by Luigi Cosenza, was only partly completed and stayed open from 1989 to 1998. The two wings of the building were restored between 1995 and 1999. Today the Cosenza Wing is the subject of a project by Mario Botta to house a library and archives.

A museum of its own time

The Gallery was born in 1883 to collect the best of contemporary artistic production, and today it holds the largest collection in Italy of Italian and international art from the 19th to the 21st century. The museum's full page is at La Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea.

How to get to the Galleria Nazionale for the Thursday evenings

The Galleria Nazionale, at Viale delle Belle Arti 131, is most conveniently reached by tram, which stops at the Galleria Arte Moderna stop a few meters from the entrance. Alternatively, get off at the Flaminio subway station and continue on foot.

By tram

The Galleria Arte Moderna stop is in front of the museum. A little farther west is the Belle Arti stop on Piazzale delle Belle Arti. Evening lines and times change with the seasons and works: check them on the ATAC website before leaving, especially for the return after 23:00.

By subway

Flaminio station, also labeled Piazza del Popolo, is a little over half a kilometer away as the crow flies. On foot the route is a bit longer. In the evening, on the way back, the road along the park is little frequented: in company it's fine, alone better the tram or a taxi.

On foot

From Piazza del Popolo the museum is under a kilometer away as the crow flies, from the Galleria Borghese a little less. Arriving by crossing Villa Borghese at sunset is beautiful. Going back at night through the park is not advisable.

By car

On Viale delle Belle Arti there is a car-sharing station of Roma Servizi per la Mobilità. The Gallery does not list a parking lot of its own: public transit remains the best choice.

Tickets and free admissions for the Thursdays at the GNAMC

The Thursdays at the GNAMC ticket costs €10, against 17 for the full daytime fare, except for the free admissions provided by law. It is bought at the museum's ticket office or through the authorized presale network reachable from the official website.

Who gets in free

The free admissions provided by law remain valid in the evening too. According to the museum's rules, the following get in free: minors under 18, people with disabilities and one companion, tour guides, ICOM members, journalists with a valid card and other categories indicated by the Gallery. Those who fall into one of these categories find Thursday evening an even more convenient opportunity.

The annual pass

For those who live in Rome, the museum's 50-euro annual pass is valid for 365 days from the first entry. With a dozen Thursdays available until December and the arrival of Abramović, it's worth doing the math.

A curiosity about Thursdays at the GNAMC, evening openings at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, from September 10 to December 17, 2026

The best curiosity is that the building that now opens in the evening was not born as a museum. Cesare Bazzani designed and built it between 1908 and 1911 for the International Art Exhibition organized for the fiftieth anniversary of Italian Unification: it was a pavilion for a great exhibition, designed to receive crowds of visitors. Only in 1915 did the Gallery move in, which until then had been housed in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni on Via Nazionale.

The museum, that is, is older than its building: established by a Royal Decree of July 26, 1883 and opened to the public in 1885, it lived for 30 years in another home. There is a thread linking this origin to the Thursday evenings: a building born for the event, for the exhibition, for the large public, goes back to doing what it was designed for. And in 1939, with Law No. 823, the museum took the name Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Arte Contemporanea, confirming its vocation as a museum of the present. Opening in the evening, with exhibitions devoted to fashion, photography, performance, is the coherent consequence of that choice almost 90 years ago.

One thing nobody tells you about Thursdays at the GNAMC, evening openings at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, from September 10 to December 17, 2026

What is rarely said about the evening openings of state museums is that they are often the least crowded hours of the week. Organized tourism visits museums in the morning, schools in the morning and early afternoon, Romans on weekends. On Thursday from 19:00 to 23:00 the Galleria Nazionale is frequented by a reduced and different public: couples, groups of friends after work, students, the occasional foreign visitor who has discovered the initiative. The result is that in front of Klimt's The Three Ages you can stay 10 minutes with no one in front of you.

The second thing nobody says is that the evening ticket is a good deal even for those who arrive in the late afternoon. Since the museum does not close between day and evening and after 18:15 you already pay the 10-euro rate, entering around 18:30 means having four and a half hours of visit at a reduced price compared with the full daytime fare. The third is that the Caffè delle Arti, the museum's restaurant, closes at 20:00: those who plan to have dinner there after the evening visit will find it closed. Better to organize beforehand, or eat afterward, heading down toward Flaminio.

The advice I give you for visiting Thursdays at the GNAMC, evening openings at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, from September 10 to December 17, 2026

My advice is to treat Thursday evening as a real evening out and not as a fallback. Arrive around 18:30, when the museum is already at the evening rate and the sunset light still comes in through Bazzani's windows. Have an aperitivo at the Caffè delle Arti before it closes at 20:00, then enter the rooms with a precise plan: the nine masterpieces indicated by the museum in the first hour and a half, then a temporary exhibition, then Marinella Senatore's room with her luminous sculpture, which looks its best in the evening.

Choose the Thursday according to the exhibitions: mid-October if you want to see Fendi and Luigi e Iango together, late November if you want Abramović with fewer people. Remember that on November 5 the museum does not open in the evening. And come back: with an annual pass and 12 Thursdays available, the Galleria Nazionale can become a habit, one room at a time, instead of a marathon. That is how you really get to know a great museum.

Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned

Many know it and almost nobody remembers it: the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna hosted one of the first exhibitions that brought fashion into an Italian museum. On October 5, 1985 the exhibition wanted by Karl Lagerfeld to celebrate 20 years of collaboration with FENDI was inaugurated in its rooms. It was titled Un percorso di lavoro and showed the steps from conception to production of the garment.

40 years later, in 2026, the museum and FENDI revived it with After Un percorso di lavoro. Fendi / Karl Lagerfeld 1985, conceived by Maria Grazia Chiuri and curated by Maria Luisa Frisa, open until October 25: the first Thursdays of October are the last evening chance to see it. On July 9, 2026 the 20th-century rooms had hosted the Fendi Couture show. The director Renata Cristina Mazzantini called the Gallery a pioneer in hosting fashion. Fashion in 1985, design in the rooms since 2026, performance with Abramović at the end of the year, evening openings every Thursday: anyone who imagines this museum as a dusty storehouse of 19th-century paintings has an idea stuck many decades ago.

Accessibility and room rules

The Galleria Nazionale declares full accessibility for people with disabilities, with an exterior ramp, elevators and internal platform lifts. The accessible entrance is on Via Gramsci. People with disabilities and one companion get in free.

Services

There are accessible restrooms, an area with a changing table, and wheelchairs available at the ticket office. For tactile visits the museum gives a dedicated contact on the visit information page.

Bags and photographs

Only small bags are allowed into the rooms. Backpacks, large bags, umbrellas and helmets go to the free cloakroom. Photos are allowed without flash, tripods or selfie sticks. Food and drinks are not allowed, nor are animals, with the exception of guide dogs.

With children

Minors under 18 get in free. A Thursday evening until 23:00 is not suited to the youngest, but for a middle or high school student an evening visit to the museum, with two or three works chosen together beforehand, can be an experience they remember.

Around the Galleria Nazionale: Valle Giulia and Villa Borghese

The Galleria Nazionale is in the valley of the Academies, on the edge of Villa Borghese. Within a kilometer are some of the most important museums in Rome, useful for building an afternoon before the evening visit.

Villa Giulia and the Bioparco

The National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia is under 400 meters away as the crow flies, the Bioparco about 350. Check their hours on the official websites: they are afternoon stops, to combine with the evening entry to the Gallery.

Galleria Borghese

The Galleria Borghese is under 900 meters away through the park. An afternoon with the Borghese's Canova and an evening with the Galleria Nazionale's Canova, with the modern collection around it, is a pairing of great effect.

The Pincio and Piazza del Popolo

Heading south you reach the Pincio and Piazza del Popolo. Sunset from the Pincio, then a walk through the park to Valle Giulia for the evening opening: in our judgment it is the ideal program for someone visiting Rome.

Where to eat before or after the evening

Inside the Gallery is the Caffè delle Arti, a cafe and restaurant open Tuesday through Sunday from 08:00 to 20:00, also reachable from outside at Via Gramsci 73. In the atrium there is a refreshment point.

Before 20:00

On Thursday the most elegant solution is an aperitivo or an early dinner at the Caffè delle Arti, before the 20:00 closing, and then the rooms until 23:00.

After 23:00

After the evening visit the Caffè is closed. The choice shifts toward Flaminio and the Parioli district, with neighborhood bars, trattorias and pizzerias, or toward the center. If you plan to have dinner afterward, book and check the kitchen's closing time.

The right photo to take at Thursdays at the GNAMC, evening openings at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, from September 10 to December 17, 2026

The right photo of a Thursday evening at the Galleria Nazionale is the one of Bazzani's lit facade, from the steps on Viale delle Belle Arti, when the sky is still blue and the museum's lights are already on. It is an image you can't take by day, and it tells the idea of a museum open in the evening better than any other. Take it on arrival, around 19:00 in September and October, a bit earlier in November and December, when darkness comes early.

Inside, photos are allowed without flash and without tripods. With the rooms half empty you can do what by day is almost impossible: a whole room with no people, with the paintings and the design seating, in a long perspective between one door and the other. Or a single person, seated in front of a work, from behind: it is the image that tells the museum's invitation to live in the rooms. Avoid photographing strangers' faces. And if you pass through Marinella Senatore's room, try the luminous sculpture backlit: in the evening it is the most photogenic subject in the Gallery.

Some important events that happened here in history

The history of the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna can be read in a series of precise dates. On July 26, 1883 a Royal Decree establishes the museum, with the task of collecting the artworks of the new unified State. In 1885 the Gallery opens to the public in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni. Between 1908 and 1911 Cesare Bazzani builds in Valle Giulia the building for the International Art Exhibition of the Fiftieth Anniversary of Unification, and in 1915 the Gallery moves in. In 1912 the reform of the statute had opened acquisitions also to works from the first half of the 1800s.

Between 1933 and 1934 Bazzani signs the first expansion. In 1939 the museum changes its name to Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Arte Contemporanea. On October 5, 1985 the Karl Lagerfeld exhibition for FENDI is inaugurated. From 1989 to 1998 the wing designed by Luigi Cosenza stays open. Between 1995 and 1999 the two wings are restored. In 2014 the museum obtains special autonomy. 2026 is a busy year: in April design enters the collection rooms. Marinella Senatore is artist of the year. On July 9 the Fendi Couture show in the 20th-century rooms. From September 10 the Thursday evenings begin. On September 26, for the European Heritage Days, the museum opens in the evening with a symbolic one-euro ticket. On November 18 Marina Abramović arrives. For a museum born for the art of its own time, it is a coherent calendar.

Who has passed through Thursdays at the GNAMC, evening openings at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, from September 10 to December 17, 2026

The first name is Cesare Bazzani, who designed and built the palazzo between 1908 and 1911 and came back between 1933 and 1934 for the first expansion. After him the engineer Luigi Cosenza, author of the second expansion, and today Mario Botta, who signs the restoration of the Cosenza Wing for library and archives.

In 1985 Karl Lagerfeld passed through here, with the exhibition for the 20 years of collaboration with FENDI. In 2026 that work has returned to the same rooms thanks to Maria Grazia Chiuri and Maria Luisa Frisa. In the same year have come the sculptor Pablo Atchugarry, with 55 sculptures and the gift to the museum of the marble work Splendore, and Marinella Senatore, artist of the year, who met here the students of the Rome Academy of Fine Arts. In the autumn come Luigi e Iango with Corpi speciali, and from November 18 Marina Abramović, with the curators Shai Baitel and Andrea Tarsia. In the rooms, for over a century, have passed the masterpieces of Klimt, Van Gogh, Modigliani, Degas, Balla, de Chirico, Burri. And on Thursday evening, from 19:00 to 23:00, comes the public that chooses to see them calmly, in the best moment of the week.

Rome between September and December, in the evening

The program of Thursdays at the GNAMC crosses three different Roman seasons: the end of summer, full autumn, the beginning of winter. Each changes the way you live the evening.

October

In October the evenings are still mild and the walk through Villa Borghese before the evening opening is pleasant. It is the best month to combine the museum with a walk to the Pincio or Piazza del Popolo, and to see the Fendi exhibition and the Luigi e Iango one together.

November

In November darkness comes early and the lit museum becomes a refuge. It is the month of Luigi e Iango and of the arrival of Abramović: the Thursdays of the 19th and the 26th are the first useful evenings for the major exhibition, and probably the quietest.

December

In December the last three evenings, the 3rd, the 10th and the 17th, coincide with the Christmas lights in the city. After December 17 the evening program ends: those who want to see Abramović in the evening have only those dates, before the exhibition goes back to daytime hours.

How to organize the evening: three programs

With four hours of evening opening and a museum of 10,000 square meters of exhibition space, the program makes the difference.

The essential evening

Arrive at 20:00, the nine masterpieces indicated by the museum, a pass through Senatore's room, leave at 22:00. Two hours are enough for a quality first visit.

The long evening

Arrive at 18:30 at the evening rate, aperitivo at the Caffè delle Arti before 20:00, the collection, a temporary exhibition, leave at 23:00. It is the formula best suited to those coming for the first time.

The themed evening

A Thursday devoted to a single thing: fashion with Fendi in October, photography with Luigi e Iango in November, performance with Abramović in December. You come back the following week for the rest.
