Un segno del contemporaneo nella città storica sempre by StenLex, sotto il segno della “Rinascita”.
Text from the official Cultura Roma Capitale page (service translation: “A contemporary mark in the historic city, always by StenLex, under the sign of ‘Rinascita’ (rebirth)”), source
«StenLex Rinascita» was created specifically for the Galleria in collaboration with Wunderkammern Gallery. The walls of the cloister garden host a series of murals that dialogue, stylistically, with the outdoor banner on the facade of the Padiglione Piacentini, next to the GAM entrance. The theme is rebirth, understood as renewal and regeneration, one of the threads running through the duo's work.
StenLex are considered pioneers of stencil poster art and are among the best-known Italian muralists internationally. The duo is made up of a Roman artist and an artist from Taranto, born in 1979 and 1980. Their names first appeared on the walls of Rome in 2001, with strong references to cinema, sacred art and pop culture; they have worked together since 2005.
The stencil poster technique involves pasting a poster to the wall like wallpaper, painting it and then leaving it to the weather, which wears away the paper matrix and lets the painting underneath emerge. The process makes the work unique and impossible to replicate, a paradox for a technique born for reproducibility. Since 2013 their language has turned toward abstract compositions of shapes, lines and landscapes.
In the duo's career, the source recalls the invitation to Banksy's Cans Festival in London in 2008, participation in Nuart Festival in Stavanger in 2008 and 2010, the work «Arazzo» at the Foro Italico in Rome in 2014 and the exhibition «Cross the Streets» at MACRO in 2017.
The Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Roma Capitale is at Via Francesco Crispi 24. The StenLex Rinascita project occupies the cloister garden and the outside of the Padiglione Piacentini, the wing next to the museum entrance. For the recent history of the institution you can also read the page on GAM 100, a century of Galleria d'Arte Moderna.
Among the museum's other initiatives is the guided tour of the storage rooms on November 10, 2026.
The period given by the official source ends on December 31, 2026; the starting point is September 17, 2020.
