The event

The story is set in a provincial town in the early 1960s, where the editor of the local newspaper, Herbert Nolan, is on trial, accused of manipulating information for personal gain. The death of a vagrant is turned into a collective threat, one able to feed fear and push the townspeople to arm themselves, benefiting a weapons company in which Nolan is a shareholder.

As the trial, led by prosecutor Miles, proceeds, responsibilities, conflicts of interest and mechanisms for conditioning public opinion come to light. The trial highlights a current theme: how collective fear can be planned at a desk and turned into an instrument of power and control.
