Officina Pigneto is the series of meetings on ideas, words and thoughts curated by the writer Nicola Lagioia with the collaboration of the writer Anna Voltaggio, running from April 2 to December 31, 2026 in Pigneto, with one event every Thursday at 18:30, excluding August, for a total of 36 events. The two venues are the Biblioteca Goffredo Mameli, at Via del Pigneto 22, and the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, at Via L'Aquila 66/74, both in Municipio V. The Pigneto stop of metro line C is a few steps away, and for the route from your own starting point it is best to use the Roman transport company's journey planner. Admission is free until seats run out, with booking recommended at 060608, valid until 10 minutes before the start. The latest events published were Thursday, October 1 at the Nuovo Cinema Aquila with Paolo Pecere and Domingo Milella, and then at the Biblioteca Mameli on October 8 with Giuseppe De Marzo, on the 15th with Carlo Mazza Galanti, on the 22nd with Antonella Lattanzi and on the 29th with Cristiana Perrella. The program for November and December is on the Roma Capitale cultural portal.

Language: a performance based on dance, music or visual acts; no English version is announced, any spoken parts are in Italian.

What Officina Pigneto is

Officina Pigneto is a multi-voice cultural workshop promoted by Roma Capitale, in which writers, cultural institutions and citizens meet every week in the Pigneto neighborhood. The official definition speaks of a workshop of critical thought, and the image is right: here you do not come to listen to a lecture, but to take part in a shared work.

An outpost, not a fortress

The program presents itself as a permanent cultural outpost and insists on one point: an outpost is not a fortress. It is an open, accessible and mobile space, which relies on two home bases, the Biblioteca Goffredo Mameli and the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, and which wants to populate different places in the neighborhood to be capillary and diffuse. The declared ambition is to represent one of the most transformative territories of the city.

A strip of fertile land

The idea from which Officina is born is to create a strip of land fertile in ideas, artists, and writers, interweaving literature, science and contemporary art through lectures, dialogues, interviews, reading groups, meetings with publishers and booksellers. Alongside this, the series wants to give a stage to the cultural productions of the different territories of Rome with round tables, presentations and debates.

Who promotes it

Officina Pigneto is promoted by the Culture Department of Roma Capitale, with the coordination of the Cultural Activities Department, in collaboration with the Istituzione Biblioteche di Roma and the Nuovo Cinema Aquila and with the organizational support of Zètema Progetto Cultura. It is one of the most continuous public cultural initiatives of the Roman year: a fixed, free appointment, every Thursday.

The formats of the Officina Pigneto meetings

The Officina Pigneto meetings develop in four main formats, to which are added debates, courses, workshops and laboratories.

The lectures

In the open lectures a writer, a director, an artist, a publisher or a cultural worker talks about their craft. It is the simplest format and often the most useful: hearing how someone who writes or directs a film really works clarifies more than many essays.

The great interviews

The great interviews are devoted to personalities of culture and art. In the first quarter, for example, the writer Nadia Terranova built a meeting around the world of Emma Dante.

The collective interviews

The collective interviews involve the reading groups of the Biblioteche di Roma: after reading a chosen book, the readers interview the author. It is the most original format of the series, because it reverses the usual relationship between stage and audience.

Prequels and spin-offs

Prequels and spin-offs are meetings that precede a major cultural event or discuss its outcome. On May 14, at the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, Peter Cameron and Tiziana Lo Porto opened a preview of Letterature, the Rome International Festival. On July 23 Officina brought a special event to India Città Aperta, at Teatro India.

Debates and workshops

The program is completed by debates on the great cultural, artistic and scientific themes of the moment, with experts and public figures, and a space for courses, workshops and laboratories, as befits a workshop that wants to experiment.

The themes of Officina Pigneto 2026: Sognare forte and Perdere tempo

Officina Pigneto organizes the calendar by quarters, each with a theme: the first, for the 11 spring meetings, was Sognare forte. The second, for the 13 appointments between July and October, is Perdere tempo.

Sognare forte

Sognare forte wanted to convey the idea of a city with great energies in motion, able to build new visions of the future that put relationships between people at the center. The title was also that of an open lecture by Tommaso Pincio, on April 30, the fourth event of the series.

Perdere tempo

Perdere tempo, the official presentation explains, claims, in an age that measures everything in efficiency and productivity, the luxury of slowness, of procrastination, of dithering, to reclaim a space we are used to taking from ourselves. Officina seeks a suspended time, necessary for reading, listening, imagining and questioning oneself. It is a theme that suits a neighborhood library on a Thursday evening, and I find it the happiest choice of the whole year.

The last quarter

The count of the 36 announced events leaves for November and December a last series of meetings, up to the closing on December 31. Their program and the theme of the quarter are published on the Roma Capitale cultural portal. The program, the organization warns, may change.

The Officina Pigneto 2026 calendar

Nicola Lagioia, the curator of Officina Pigneto

Nicola Lagioia, curator of Officina Pigneto, is a writer born in Bari in 1973, winner of the Premio Strega in 2015 with La ferocia and director of the Turin International Book Fair from 2017 to 2023.

The beginnings

A law graduate of the University of Bari, he worked as an editor for several publishing houses and as a ghostwriter, writing books, screenplays and commissioned texts. He made his debut as a novelist in 2001 with Tre sistemi per sbarazzarsi di Tolstoj (senza risparmiare se stessi), published by minimum fax. In 2004 Einaudi published Occidente per principianti, which won the Premio Scanno and the Premio Napoli.

The novels and the prizes

With Riportando tutto a casa, Einaudi 2009, he won the SuperPremio Vittorini, the Premio Volponi and the Premio Viareggio for fiction. In 2015 he won the Strega with La ferocia. In 2020 he published La città dei vivi, with which the following year he won the Premio Bottari Lattes Grinzane and the Premio Napoli. A podcast in eight episodes also came out of the book.

Radio, film, publishing

Since 2010 he has been one of the hosts of Pagina3, Rai Radio 3's review of the cultural pages. Until 2017 he directed nichel, minimum fax's series of Italian fiction. He was a selector for the Venice Film Festival in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and in 2020 sat on the jury of the main competition. Among his titles there is also a book on the Esquilino, Esquilino. Tre ricognizioni, from 2017: an author who has already told the Rome of the neighborhoods.

Anna Voltaggio

The program is curated by Lagioia with the collaboration of the writer Anna Voltaggio, indicated by the organization as co-curator of the work on the calendar.

A curiosity about Officina Pigneto at Biblioteca Mameli and Nuovo Cinema Aquila, April 2 to December 31, 2026

The curiosity is in the July calendar. On July 16 Officina hosted Romarivista, with an issue devoted to Rome seen through line C. Metro line C has a stop right in Pigneto, a short walk from the Biblioteca Mameli. Talking about the new line in a library that the metro has made reachable from half the city was a way of discussing the neighborhood from the neighborhood itself.

The second curiosity concerns July 23, the only day with two events. At 18:30, at the Biblioteca Mameli, Giordano Meacci and Nicola Lagioia talked about the predators of lost time. At 21:00 Lagioia was at Teatro India, on the Tiber, to talk about Goliarda Sapienza and Rome according to Mario Martone. Two venues at the extremes of the city on the same evening: the mobile outpost the presentation speaks of is not just a formula.

Finally, the name of the library. Goffredo Mameli, author of the Canto degli Italiani, died in Rome in 1849 during the defense of the Roman Republic, at 21. A library dedicated to a poet who died very young, hosting a series on wasting time, is an unintended but eloquent pairing.

The Biblioteca Goffredo Mameli

The Biblioteca Goffredo Mameli is the municipal library of Pigneto, at Via del Pigneto 22, in Municipio V, part of the Biblioteche di Roma system and the venue of most Officina Pigneto meetings.

The spaces

The library has a study room with 48 seats inside and 40 outdoors, with the library system's wi-fi available inside and out. Access for people with disabilities is complete, according to the library system's official page.

The hours

In 2026 the library is open Monday from 13:00 to 19:00, Tuesday to Thursday from 9:00 to 19:00, Friday from 9:00 to 15:00 and Saturday from 9:00 to 13:00. It is closed on Sunday. The Thursday Officina meetings at 18:30 therefore take place in the last part of opening hours. The library's phone is 06 45460541.

The reading groups

At the Mameli two reading circles are active, the Circolo Goffredo Mameli and the Igiaba Scego Book Club. These groups, together with those of the other Roman libraries, are the protagonists of Officina's collective interviews, and those who want to take part actively can start here.

Goffredo Mameli, the library's namesake

Goffredo Mameli, born in Genoa on September 5, 1827 and died in Rome on July 6, 1849, is the author of the Canto degli Italiani, written in 1847 and set to music by Michele Novaro.

The anthem

The Canto degli Italiani became the provisional national anthem in 1946 and was recognized by law in 2017. It is curious to think that a text written by a 20-year-old became, after 70 years of provisional status, the anthem of the Republic.

The Roman Republic

Mameli took part in the Roman Republic of 1849: to him is attributed the dispatch to Mazzini with the words Roma! Repubblica! Venite!. He was wounded on June 3, 1849 at Villa Corsini, during the fighting on the Janiculum, and died on July 6 at Trinità dei Pellegrini. Since 1941 his remains have been in the Mausoleo Ossario Garibaldino on the Janiculum.

Something nobody tells you about Officina Pigneto at Biblioteca Mameli and Nuovo Cinema Aquila, April 2 to December 31, 2026

What nobody says is that the booking at 060608 is valid only until 10 minutes before the start. Those who book and arrive at 18:25 risk finding their seat already assigned to someone who was waiting. For the better-known names, like the meeting with Paolo Giordano, Cecilia Sala and Sandro Veronesi in September, the difference between getting in and staying outside comes down to a few minutes.

The second thing is that the venues change. Most meetings are held at the Biblioteca Mameli, at Via del Pigneto 22, but some are at the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, at Via L'Aquila 66/74: for example Thursday, October 1. The two venues are close, but they are not the same door, and it is best to check every week on the official portal.

The third is that free admission does not mean informal. The library's rooms have limited capacity, and the meetings start punctually at 18:30. Those who get out of work at 18:00 and think of arriving at leisure have to reckon with the rush-hour metro.

The Nuovo Cinema Aquila

The Nuovo Cinema Aquila, at Via L'Aquila 66/74, is Officina Pigneto's second home base and hosts the events with the largest audience, such as the April 2 opening and the October 1 meeting.

A cinema returned to the neighborhood

The Pigneto cinema is a property confiscated in 1996 and reopened in 2015, the same year in which Via del Pigneto was pedestrianized. It is a story the neighborhood knows well: a hall taken from illicit use and returned to public life, and today an institutional partner of a Roma Capitale series.

Why the cinema

A cinema hall allows meetings with more seats and, when needed, screenings. It is not an isolated case in Officina's program: on June 25 the meeting on Diaz, 25 anni dopo brought together the producer Domenico Procacci and the director Daniele Vicari, and on July 23 the film by Mario Martone on Goliarda Sapienza was discussed. Cinema, at Officina, is at home.

The advice I give you for visiting Officina Pigneto at Biblioteca Mameli and Nuovo Cinema Aquila, April 2 to December 31, 2026

My advice is to choose a Thursday and treat it as a whole evening. Book at 060608 the day before, arrive in Pigneto around 18:00, take a short walk along the pedestrian stretch of Via del Pigneto and present yourself at the door at 18:15. After the meeting, which lasts about a couple of hours according to the official calendar, stay for dinner in the neighborhood: it is the right way to close an evening on a theme like Perdere tempo.

To get the tone of the series, the most unpredictable meeting of October was the one on October 1 at the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, the largest venue: Paolo Pecere and Domingo Milella talked about the origin of art and of humankind, from the caves to the stars. Those who prefer pure literature had Antonella Lattanzi at the Mameli on October 22. For the Thursdays of November and December it is best to consult the Roma Capitale cultural portal.

And a tip on method: if a meeting presents a book, read at least a few pages beforehand. Officina's collective interviews were born precisely for those who arrive having read, and the difference shows in the questions.

Pigneto, the neighborhood of Officina

Pigneto is a neighborhood of Municipio V, in the triangle between Via Prenestina, Via Casilina and Via di Acqua Bullicante, starting from Porta Maggiore. Officina Pigneto describes it as one of the most transformative territories of the city.

The name

The name comes from the pines of the Caballini family, tied to the Serventi villa. The place name is attested from the 17th century, while the residential core formed after 1870.

Trams and factories

Pigneto grew as a working-class and railway neighborhood. Between 1886 and 1891 in Piazza Caballini there was a horse-tram depot, electrified in 1904. Around it rose factories such as Serono, from 1909, and the viscose plant on the Prenestina, active from 1923 to 1954, later the former SNIA. During the war, in 1943 and 1944, the neighborhood suffered bombings, and among the victims were 50 employees of the tram company.

Pigneto in film

Pigneto is one of the most filmed Roman neighborhoods. Via Montecuccoli appears in Roma città aperta. Accattone, from 1961, is set here. And the neighborhood appears in Bellissima, Il ferroviere, Una vita difficile, Fantozzi, Un borghese piccolo piccolo, L'audace colpo dei soliti ignoti. A series with a cinema as its home base could not find a more fitting neighborhood.

Today

Since 2015 Via del Pigneto has been partly pedestrian, with bars, bookshops, osterias and places that fill up in the evening. The Ecomuseo Casilino ad Duas Lauros is also active in the neighborhood, telling the territory between Casilina and Prenestina.

Another well-known fact, yet rarely mentioned

It is well known that Pigneto is the neighborhood of Accattone. It is less often mentioned that Pigneto was first of all a neighborhood of tram drivers and workers: the tram depot, the factories of the Prenestina, the railway a short walk away. Its literary imagery comes from there, from work, and not from the bohemia now associated with the evenings along the pedestrian stretch.

A second known and little-remembered fact: the municipal libraries of Rome are neighborhood cultural outposts, free and open to all, yet many Romans have never visited one as adults. Officina Pigneto uses a library as its home base precisely to reverse this habit, and the reading groups taking part in the collective interviews are proof that it works.

Finally, on the curator. Nicola Lagioia is remembered for the Strega and for his years at the Turin Book Fair. It is less cited that in 2017 he devoted a book to the Esquilino, Esquilino. Tre ricognizioni. The person curating Officina knows the city's neighborhoods from having written about them.

How to get to the Biblioteca Mameli and the Nuovo Cinema Aquila

The Biblioteca Mameli is at Via del Pigneto 22 and the Nuovo Cinema Aquila at Via L'Aquila 66/74, both in Municipio V. The Pigneto stop of metro line C, at the intersection with Via del Pigneto, is the most convenient reference.

Metro C

The Pigneto stop of line C is at the intersection with Via del Pigneto, a few minutes' walk from both venues. On the same line there is also the Malatesta stop.

Tram and train

Trams run along Via Prenestina, and the Termini-Centocelle railway has stops at Ponte Casilino and Sant'Elena. For lines, times and stops it is always best to use the Roman transport company's journey planner, especially in the evening for the return.

By car and bicycle

Pigneto has a pedestrian island and narrow streets, with difficult parking on Thursday evenings. Better to use public transport or a bicycle. Those arriving by car should expect to circle a while before finding a space.

The right photo to take at Officina Pigneto at Biblioteca Mameli and Nuovo Cinema Aquila, April 2 to December 31, 2026

The right photo is of the Biblioteca Mameli hall a few minutes before the start, with the chairs filling up and the shelves behind. It is the image that tells better than any program what Officina is: books and people in the same space, on a Thursday evening. During the meeting, no flash and no raised phones: ask the organization if photos are allowed.

The second is outside the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, with the sign and the audience lined up on the sidewalk of Via L'Aquila. A confiscated cinema returned to the neighborhood, with people queuing for a free meeting on the origin of art, is a portrait of today's Pigneto.

The third, for those who stay after the meeting, is Via del Pigneto in the evening, along the pedestrian stretch, with the outdoor tables and the murals. It is the neighborhood that gave the series its name, and deserves a place in the evening's album.

Some important events that took place here in history

In 1886 in Piazza Caballini, in Pigneto, a horse-tram depot was opened, active until 1891. In 1904 the traction was electrified. From that moment the neighborhood grew as a neighborhood of tram drivers, railway workers and factory workers, next to the factories of the Prenestina.

In 1909 Serono arrived, and from 1923 to 1954 the viscose plant, later known as the former SNIA, operated on the Prenestina. In 1943 and 1944 bombings hit the neighborhood, and among the victims were 50 employees of the tram company: a wound Pigneto still remembers.

In the postwar period Pigneto entered film history. Via Montecuccoli appears in Roma città aperta, and in 1961 the neighborhood was the set of Accattone.

In 1996 the cinema on Via L'Aquila was confiscated, and in 2015 it reopened as the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, the same year Via del Pigneto was pedestrianized. The Biblioteca Goffredo Mameli, at Via del Pigneto 22, completes the picture of the neighborhood's public cultural outposts. On April 2, 2026, with Francesca Mannocchi and Rodrigo d'Erasmo, Officina Pigneto began here.

Who has passed through Officina Pigneto at Biblioteca Mameli and Nuovo Cinema Aquila, April 2 to December 31, 2026

In six months Officina Pigneto has brought to Pigneto an important part of contemporary Italian literature: Rosella Postorino, Giulia Caminito, Antonio Pascale, Marco Rossari, Tommaso Pincio, Nadia Terranova, Lisa Ginzburg, Giordano Meacci, Ilaria Gaspari, and with them Vittorio Lingiardi and Eleonora Danco.

From abroad came the writer Peter Cameron, with Tiziana Lo Porto, for the preview of the Letterature festival. On September 17 the Mameli hall hosted Paolo Giordano, Cecilia Sala, Sandro Veronesi and Parisa Nazari for a meeting devoted to Narges Mohammadi, curated by Pen Centre Roma, with greetings from the culture councilor Massimiliano Smeriglio.

Cinema passed through with Domenico Procacci and Daniele Vicari for the 20-fifth anniversary of Diaz, and with Valeria Solarino for the meeting on Via Modesta Valenti, together with Simonetta Sciandivasci and Augusto d'Angelo of the Community of Sant'Egidio. Francesca Mannocchi opened the series with Rodrigo d'Erasmo, in a meeting on storytelling in wartime.

Before them, Pigneto had seen the film cameras of Roma città aperta and Accattone pass. The continuity, looked at closely, is evident: the neighborhood has always been a place where stories are told.

How to organize a Thursday evening in Pigneto

A Thursday of Officina Pigneto starts at 18:30 and ends, according to the official calendar, around 20:30: there is all the time for dinner in the neighborhood.

Before

Book your seat at 060608 the day before or the same morning. Arrive a quarter of an hour early: the booking lapses 10 minutes before the start.

During

The meetings alternate dialogue and questions from the audience. In the collective interviews it is the reading groups that lead, and those who have read the book can speak up. It is one of the few Roman settings where the ordinary reader speaks directly with the author.

After

Via del Pigneto and the nearby streets have trattorias, osterias, pizzerias, bars with outdoor tables and cuisines from different countries. On Thursday evenings the neighborhood is lively but not crowded as on weekends, and finding a seat without a reservation is still possible.

What is around Pigneto

Pigneto stretches between the Casilina and the Prenestina, and in fall 2026 hosts other cultural events besides Officina.

Other events in the neighborhood

In October the neighborhood hosted the Pigneto Comedy Fest, and on October 10 Quartiere Vino Pigneto for the Roman October festival. For families, a few minutes away, there is the children's season of Centrale Preneste Teatro.

The Ecomuseo Casilino

The Ecomuseo Casilino ad Duas Lauros offers routes through the territory between Casilina and Prenestina, from ancient traces to murals. It is the natural complement to a series that wants to read the neighborhood.

Accessibility, teens and practical information

The Biblioteca Mameli declares full access for people with disabilities, and Officina Pigneto meetings are free with booking recommended at 060608.

Accessibility

For the Nuovo Cinema Aquila it is best to ask before the meeting about access arrangements. For the library you can call 06 45460541 during opening hours.

Teens and students

The meetings are designed for an adult audience, but many themes interest high school and university students: war told by those who document it, democracy, human rights in Iran, contemporary art in Rome. A Thursday at Officina is an excellent introduction to the city's cultural life, free and informal.

Information

The updated program, with any changes, is published on the Roma Capitale cultural portal. The 060608 contact center answers both for bookings and for information.
