«un omaggio contemporaneo all'album capolavoro di Davis»
Text from the official Cultura Roma Capitale page (service translation: “a contemporary tribute to Davis's masterpiece album”), source
«New Sketches of Spain» was born from the meeting of the trumpet of French-Swiss musician Erik Truffaz and the flamenco saxophonist and singer Antonio Lizana. It is a show between jazz and flamenco, enriched by the dance of Ana Perez, that reinterprets «Sketches of Spain», the record with which Miles Davis opened jazz to world music.
The presentation reports a legend about its origin: Davis supposedly became passionate about traditional Spanish music after accompanying his wife to a performance by the dancer Roberto Iglesias.
Truffaz, described as a devoted disciple of Davis, is a prominent figure of French electro-jazz. He began by playing in his father's dance orchestra, won the Prix Special, a French jazz award, in the 1990s, and then widened his style to drum'n'bass and collaborations with hip-hop and world music artists.
Lizana was born and raised in San Fernando, in the province of Cádiz, one of the cradles of flamenco, and is named as one of the best-known representatives of new flamenco jazz. The presentation recalls an NPR Tiny Desk concert and collaborations with Arturo O'Farrill and Alejandro Sanz on Grammy-winning works.
On stage, besides Truffaz and Lizana, are Renaud Gabriel Pion on bass clarinet, English horn and arrangements, and the flamenco dancer Ana Perez.
The Auditorium Parco della Musica was designed by Renzo Piano and opened in 2002. Sala Petrassi, with 673 seats, is the smallest of the three main halls, alongside Sinopoli and Santa Cecilia.
«New Sketches of Spain» is part of the Roma Jazz Festival 2026, which in November also brings to the hall Kurt Elling with the Yellowjackets and Steve Coleman.
