Albano Laziale is one of the most important towns of the Castelli Romani. Palazzo Savelli was built in the 1200s by the Savelli family as a fortification, with square towers still visible on Corso Matteotti. After 1697 it became the residence of the papal governor and since 1870 it has been the seat of the town hall. The Cathedral of San Pancrazio has a facade of peperino and travertine built between 1719 and 1722 to a design by Carlo Buratti. The civic museum displays finds from the area's ancient history.
