Lagwagon at Hacienda Roma in brief

The February 25 concert closes Lagwagon's short Italian run: February 23 at Magazzini Generali in Milan, the 24th at Vidia in Cesena, the 25th at Hacienda in Rome. According to the promoter, it is the band's only appearance in Europe in 2027.

Date and times

Thursday, February 25, 2027, doors at 21:00. The night, according to the official sales channel, goes on until 02:00: the format is the club one, with a standing audience, no numbered seats, a bar and a coat check.

Tickets

Tickets have been on sale since September 17, 2026. The first ones, at a reduced price, are sold out. The advance entry ticket costs €30 and the price goes up at the door. The network is the one indicated by Hub Music Factory on the official concert page.

Who can get in

Entry is restricted to adults, and the dress code is the simplest possible: come as you are. An ID in your pocket is essential.

The European tour

Between February and March 2027 Lagwagon play almost a dozen concerts across Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. They return to Italy two years after the concert at the Bay Fest in Bellaria Igea Marina.

Who Lagwagon are: melodic punk from Santa Barbara

Lagwagon are an American punk rock band formed in Goleta, California, just outside Santa Barbara, between 1989 and 1990: one of the longest-lived and most influential acts of melodic hardcore and skate punk, tied from the start to the label Fat Wreck Chords.

From Section 8 to Lagwagon

The group started under the name Section 8, which they dropped because too many other bands had already used it. According to the liner notes of the reissue of the first album, it was Fat Mike, the founder of Fat Wreck Chords, who suggested the new name, taken from a song already written about their tour van, which was always breaking down. The van can be seen on the back cover of “Trashed,” the second album.

Far from the majors

Lagwagon never had, nor sought, big commercial success. In the years when Green Day, The Offspring and Rancid were entering the charts, they turned down offers from several major labels and stayed with Fat Wreck Chords. That is how they built a very loyal following in North America, Europe and Asia.

A song in video games

For a whole generation Lagwagon are also the soundtrack of a video game: “May 16” is part of the soundtrack of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. Many of the 40-somethings who will be at Hacienda discovered them that way.

Lagwagon: the biography, album by album

Lagwagon's discography counts nine studio albums for Fat Wreck Chords, from “Duh” in 1992 to “Railer” in 2019, plus an EP, a live album and a collection of rarities. Going through it is the best way to understand what kind of show to expect.

Duh, 1992

The first album for Fat Wreck Chords was recorded and mixed in four days. Joey Cape has said that the band was inexperienced in the studio at the time, and that everything was decided in rehearsal: the tight budget forced them to walk into the studio with the songs already ready, and the record faithfully portrays the band of those years.

Trashed, 1994, and Hoss, 1995

“Trashed” is the record that made them known, with their first video, “Island of Shame.” “Hoss” came out on November 21, 1995 and was followed by a long tour in Europe, Australia and Japan. After that run, guitarist Shawn Dewey and drummer Derrick Plourde left: Ken Stringfellow of the Posies came in temporarily on guitar, and Dave Raun permanently on drums.

Double Plaidinum, 1997, and Let's Talk About Feelings, 1998

“Double Plaidinum” is the first album with Dave Raun and the only one with Stringfellow. “Let's Talk About Feelings” marks the arrival of guitarist Chris Rest, still in the lineup today, and contains “Messengers.” In 2000 “Let's Talk About Leftovers” came out, a collection of rarities and unreleased songs, and the band paused: all the members were busy with side projects.

Blaze, 2003, and Resolve, 2005

The comeback came in 2002, and the next year “Blaze” came out, with “E Dagger” and “Falling Apart.” In 2005 came “Resolve,” an album dedicated to the memory of original drummer Derrick Plourde, who died that year, and the live album “Live in a Dive.” In 2008 the EP with the self-mocking title “I Think My Older Brother Used to Listen to Lagwagon” was the last recording with longtime bassist Jesse Buglione, who left in 2010.

Hang, 2014, and Railer, 2019

After the expanded reissues of the first five albums in the 2011 box set “Putting Music In Its Place,” Lagwagon went back into the studio with Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore at the Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado. “Hang,” released on October 28, 2014, is the first with bassist Joe Raposo and debuted at number 95 on the Billboard 200 chart. “Railer” came out on October 4, 2019, with the single “Bubble,” and was taken on tour together with Face to Face.

Joey Cape, the voice of Lagwagon

Joey Cape, Randall Joseph Cape on his birth certificate, was born on November 16, 1966 and has been Lagwagon's voice since the founding: singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer, he is one of the most recognizable figures of 1990s California punk.

Bad Astronaut and the Gimme Gimmes

During Lagwagon's break years, between 1999 and 2000, Cape worked on two side projects: Bad Astronaut, of which he is the singer, and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, the punk cover band in which he plays guitar next to Fat Mike. Lagwagon drummer Dave Raun is also part of the Gimme Gimmes lineup.

With Tony Sly, acoustic

With Tony Sly, singer of No Use for a Name, Cape released two acoustic splits, in 2004 and 2012, with stripped-down versions of the two bands' songs. The first includes an unreleased Cape song, “Violet,” written for his daughter.

The solo career

The first solo album, “Bridge,” came out in 2008. The second, “Doesn't Play Well with Others,” came about in an unusual way: in 2010 Cape released a song a month, and then collected the 12 tracks on a record in 2011. “Stitch Puppy” followed in 2015, “Let Me Know When You Give Up” in 2019 and “A Good Year to Forget” in 2021. In 2009 he took part in the Revival Tour with Chuck Ragan and Frank Turner.

One Week Record

Among the solo records is also “One Week Record” from 2016, born from the project of the same name: it is the practical demonstration of the method Cape applies to other artists, a whole album written and recorded within a week, with no time for superfluous polish.

Producer and label owner

In 1996 he founded the label My Records, which debuted with Nerf Herder's first album. He produced records by the Ataris and Nerf Herder. Later he created One Week Records: 10 songs recorded in seven days in his home studio, with the guest artist eating, sleeping and recording there for a week.

The Lagwagon lineup

Lagwagon's current lineup includes Joey Cape on vocals, Chris Flippin on guitar since the founding, Dave Raun on drums since 1996, Chris Rest on guitar since 1997 and Joe Raposo on bass since 2010.

Chris Flippin and Chris Rest

Flippin is, with Cape, the only founder still in the lineup. Rest joined for “Let's Talk About Feelings,” and since then the band has played with two permanent guitars: it is the wall of melodic guitars that makes a Lagwagon song recognizable from the first bars.

Dave Raun and Joe Raposo

Raun and Raposo both come from the Rich Kids on LSD, the band known by the abbreviation RKL, where Raposo has gone back to playing in recent years: Lagwagon's rhythm section therefore has a shared history that predates joining the band.

Who has been in the band

Over the years the band has included guitarist Shawn Dewey, drummer Derrick Plourde, bassist Jesse Buglione and, for a short period, Ken Stringfellow. Chris Shiflett, Scott Shiflett and Lindsay McDougall have also played with them as touring guitarists.

What you will hear at the Lagwagon concert

The setlist for the Rome concert is not published. Lagwagon's repertoire covers 30 years of records, and a club show, for a band like this, draws on the whole career.

Titles to know

Among the songs the band chose as singles or for videos are “Island of Shame” from “Trashed,” “Razor Burn” from “Hoss,” “Messengers” from “Let's Talk About Feelings,” “E Dagger” and “Falling Apart” from “Blaze,” “Heartbreaking Music” from “Resolve,” “Made of Broken Parts” from “Hang,” and “Bubble,” “Surviving California” and “Stealing Light” from “Railer.”

The compilation songs

Part of Lagwagon's fame runs through the Fat Wreck Chords compilations: “May 16,” “Know-It-All,” “Mr. Coffee,” “Alison's Disease.” These are songs that the Italian punk audience of the 1990s knows from those compilations, even before the albums.

What to expect from the sound

Fast rhythms, two melodic guitars, backing vocals, Cape's voice holding the melodic line above the wall of sound: melodic skate punk in its most classic form. It is music made for the mosh pit and for singing along, and in a club like Hacienda the two go together.

A curiosity about Lagwagon at Hacienda Roma, February 25, 2027

The best curiosity is about the name. “Lagwagon” means more or less “the wagon that lags behind,” and it was the nickname of the van the band toured in, a vehicle that broke down constantly. The band had written a song about it, and when it became clear that Section 8 could not stay, it was Fat Mike who proposed using that title as the name.

The van was not just a joke: it appears on the back cover of “Trashed,” the 1994 record that made the band known. It is rare for a punk band to carry so openly in its name its condition as a group on the road, made of miles, breakdowns and small-town stages.

There is also a detail that makes the Rome date special in a small way. The 2027 Italian run starts in Milan, passes through Cesena and ends in Rome: those who go to Hacienda hear the last of the band's three Italian nights, in a club in eastern Rome that carries the name of another legendary venue, the Hacienda in Manchester. A Californian van and an English club, on the same sign on Via dei Cluniacensi.

Fat Wreck Chords, Lagwagon's home

Fat Wreck Chords is the label founded by Fat Mike, bassist and singer of NOFX, which has released all of Lagwagon's albums from 1992 to today: a relationship more than 30 years long, rare in the history of independent music.

A record label family

The bond between Lagwagon and the label goes beyond the contract. Cape and Raun play with Fat Mike in Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Lagwagon have shared stages and compilations with the bands on the roster. In 2011 the label reissued the first five albums in expanded editions.

The compilations

Lagwagon songs appear on almost all of the label's historic collections: “Fat Music for Fat People,” “Survival of the Fattest,” “Physical Fatness,” “Life in the Fat Lane,” “Live Fat, Die Young,” “Short Music for Short People,” as well as the Rock Against Bush series.

Why it matters

The 1990s sound of Fat Wreck Chords, fast, melodic, ironic, is in large part the sound of Lagwagon. Anyone who grew up with those compilations will hear the original source at Hacienda.

One thing nobody tells you about Lagwagon at Hacienda Roma, February 25, 2027

What nobody says is that Lagwagon chose not to become famous. At the height of the California punk explosion, when Green Day and The Offspring were selling millions of records, they turned down proposals from several majors and stayed with an independent label. The result is a career without big chart positions, “Hang” entered the Billboard 200 only at number 95, but with an audience that has followed them for 30 years.

The second thing concerns Joey Cape. People who know him only as Lagwagon's shouter often overlook the acoustic singer-songwriter: the solo records, the splits with Tony Sly, the Revival Tour with Chuck Ragan and Frank Turner. In Lagwagon's songs, beneath the speed, there is the same writing, attentive to melody and personal lyrics. “Resolve,” the record dedicated to Derrick Plourde, is the clearest proof.

The third is practical. The reduced-price entry ticket is already sold out and the price goes up at the door: for a band that plays about a dozen dates in all of Europe in 2027, waiting until the night itself is a needless risk.

Hacienda Roma, the venue of the Lagwagon concert

Hacienda Roma is a concert and event space at Via dei Cluniacensi 68, in Municipio IV, with 1500 square meters indoors and as much outdoors, a bar and a coat check.

A name taken from Manchester

The name is inspired by the Fac 51 Hacienda in Manchester, the club opened in 1982 and closed in 1997, famous for the many concerts it hosted. It is the same idea the Rome venue claims in its presentation: a space for live music, clubbing, art and events.

What the hall is like

In late February the concert is held indoors, in a hall for a standing audience: no armchairs, no numbered seats, just a few meters between the stage and the front row. For a punk show it is the right size.

The hall's calendar

In the same season Hacienda hosts very different nights, from Frontiera Festival to the Bunny Club party. In November 2026 the same hall welcomed the Codefendants, the band co-founded by Fat Mike that in its career has shared the stage with Lagwagon themselves.

The advice I give you for visiting Lagwagon at Hacienda Roma, February 25, 2027

The advice for Lagwagon at Hacienda is simple: buy the presale ticket now, at €30, and arrive when doors open at 21:00. The door price is higher, and the only date in Europe for the whole year is not an evening to leave to chance.

Second piece of advice: brush up on the records. “Trashed” and “Hoss” for the classic era, “Let's Talk About Feelings” for the two-guitar sound, “Hang” and “Railer” for the band of today. At punk shows people sing, and if you know the choruses you have twice the fun.

Third, the trip back. The concert is on a Thursday and the night, according to the official channel, goes on until 02:00. At that hour metro B is no longer running: plan on a taxi, a car service or a ride arranged before you go in. When you come out, the cars run out quickly.

Finally, your spot in the hall. If you want to mosh, go under the stage. If you want to hear Cape's voice and the two guitars well, stand at the back, in the middle of the hall, where the sound is more balanced. And bring musician's earplugs: your ears will thank you the next day.

How to get to Hacienda Roma for the Lagwagon concert

Hacienda Roma is reached from Tiburtina station, connected to metro B and to regional and high-speed trains, continuing by surface buses or on foot for a little more than a kilometer.

By metro B

From Termini, metro B reaches Tiburtina in a few minutes. From the station, Via dei Cluniacensi is about a quarter of an hour's walk.

By train from outside Rome

If you come from outside the city, get off directly at Tiburtina. For a band that plays only three dates in Italy, many will come from the rest of Central and Southern Italy: Rome is the most convenient date for them.

By car

Hacienda has no private parking lot: you park in the nearby areas. On Thursday evenings you can find a spot, but rarely in front of the entrance. Don't drive if you drink.

The late-night trip back

After the metro closes, what remains are the night buses of Rome's network, a taxi or a car service. Arrange the trip back before you go in.

Another well-known fact, yet not often cited

Everyone knows Lagwagon are a Fat Wreck Chords band. Less often remembered is how intertwined they are with the other bands of the same family: Joey Cape plays guitar in Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Fat Mike's punk cover band, and in the same lineup there is also Lagwagon's drummer, Dave Raun.

And the current rhythm section comes from another historic California punk band: Dave Raun and Joe Raposo both played in the Rich Kids on LSD. In West Coast punk, musicians circulate among bands more than elsewhere, and Lagwagon are one example.

The second well-known but little-cited fact concerns Chris Shiflett: in 1996 he was Lagwagon's touring guitarist, and his name also appears in the Gimme Gimmes lineup. It is one of the many threads that hold the Fat Wreck Chords family together, where the same musicians move from one band to another.

The right photo to take at Lagwagon at Hacienda Roma, February 25, 2027

The right photo at a Lagwagon concert is not the close-up of Joey Cape, but the audience: from the side of the hall, a little elevated if possible, the mosh pit under the stage with the band backlit tells the night better than any zoom.

Before going in, the Hacienda sign on Via dei Cluniacensi with the line at the entrance, on a late February evening, is the other image of the night: the Rome of the outskirts clubs, far from the postcards, with 40-somethings in band T-shirts next to 20-somethings who discovered 1990s punk on streaming.

During the concert follow the venue's guidelines on photos and filming. In a club a raised phone blocks the view of the people behind: 10 seconds of video of the most sung chorus are worth more than a whole concert badly recorded. And if you're under the stage, the phone stays in your pocket.

On the way out, the tracks toward Tiburtina at night, with the station lights, are the last shot for those who love urban photography.

Some important events that happened here in history

The history of Hacienda Roma is recent, and its oldest memory is in the name: the Fac 51 Hacienda in Manchester, opened in 1982 and closed in 1997, which the Rome venue refers to. Those were 15 years in which that club became famous for the concerts it hosted.

The recent history of the hall on Via dei Cluniacensi can be read in its calendar. The Roma Capitale portal lists among the events hosted the Frontiera Festival, Salvo Di Paola's stand-up comedy, the Indie Power night, Martina Catuzzi's live show with the UOMA project, the Bunny Club party and the Digitalism concert. In autumn 2026 the punk of the Codefendants arrived.

As for the guests of February 25, the dates that matter are these. 1992, “Duh.” 1994, “Trashed.” 1995, “Hoss.” 1996, Dave Raun arrives. 1998, “Let's Talk About Feelings” with Chris Rest. 2000, the pause. 2003, “Blaze.” 2005, “Resolve” and “Live in a Dive.” 2008, Joey Cape's first solo record. 2010, Joe Raposo on bass. 2011, the reissue box set. 2014, “Hang.” 2019, “Railer.” 2025, the Bay Fest in Bellaria Igea Marina. 2027, the European tour and the Rome date.

Who has passed through Lagwagon at Hacienda Roma, February 25, 2027

According to the official Roma Capitale portal, very different artists have passed through Hacienda Roma: the German electronic duo Digitalism, the Frontiera Festival, Salvo Di Paola with stand-up comedy, Martina Catuzzi with the UOMA project, the Indie Power and Bunny Club nights. In November 2026 the Codefendants brought their crossover of punk and hip hop here.

On February 25 it is the turn of a band that has crossed paths with important names in its history. Ken Stringfellow of the Posies played guitar in Lagwagon. Chris Shiflett was their touring guitarist in 1996. Bill Stevenson produced “Hang” in his studio in Fort Collins. Joey Cape shared records with Tony Sly of No Use for a Name and the stages of the Revival Tour with Chuck Ragan and Frank Turner.

And there is a direct crossing with the hall. The Codefendants, who played at Hacienda a few months earlier, have played with Lagwagon on their tours, as the promoter recalls. Anyone who was at that November night and comes back in February sees, in the same club, two generations of the Fat Wreck Chords family.

Around Hacienda: Tiburtino, Collatino, San Lorenzo

Hacienda is in a part of eastern Rome far from the tourist circuits and close to Termini, among rail yards, working-class postwar neighborhoods and a nightlife that in recent years has moved toward the eastern outskirts.

San Lorenzo and Verano

Beyond Tiburtina station you find the basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura and the Verano Cemetery. San Lorenzo, the university neighborhood, is the classic place to have dinner before an evening around here.

The Collatino scene

In the area there is an urban scene made of murals and independent spaces, described in the page on Kollatino Underground. For a punk show it is the right setting.

The city's other punk clubs

Hub Music Factory, Lagwagon's promoter, also brings several rock and punk concerts to Rome at Traffic, the other reference address for the genre in eastern Rome. For an outdoor afternoon before the concert, the nearest large historic park is Villa Torlonia, along Via Nomentana.

Where to eat before the Lagwagon concert

Around Tiburtina station there are neighborhood pizzerias, rotisseries and ethnic places open late. San Lorenzo, not far away, offers a much wider choice of trattorias, pizzerias and aperitivo spots.

An early dinner

On Thursday evenings in San Lorenzo the venues fill up with students. Sitting down around 19:30 lets you have dinner calmly and arrive at Hacienda for doors at 21:00.

At the venue's bar

Hacienda has a bar service, meant more for drinking than for eating. For dinner it is better not to count on the concert hall.

Practical tips for the Lagwagon evening at Hacienda

A punk club show is a physical night: you stand for hours, you mosh under the stage, you come out sweaty into the February cold. A few precautions help.

ID

Entry is restricted to adults: you need an ID, and it is best to have it at hand already in line.

Clothing

Closed, comfortable shoes, nothing fragile in your pockets, a jacket to leave at the coat check. It's hot inside, but outside at 02:00 in late February it isn't.

Ears

Punk concert volumes are high. Musician's earplugs lower the volume without distorting the sound: a minimal expense, a habit worth picking up.

Accessibility

For information on access and services for people with disabilities, it is best to write beforehand to info@haciendaroma.it or call 393 3873161, the contacts listed on the Roma Capitale portal.

February in Rome, the club season

In late February live music in Rome is all indoors: it is the club season, and a one-off date by a historic California punk band is one of the month's events for fans of the genre.

The weather

Evenings in late February are cold and often rainy. Coming out of a hot club, a dry jacket makes the difference.

A long weekend

If you come from outside Rome you can turn the Thursday into a long weekend: February is one of the quietest months of the year for museums and monuments, and the city can be visited without lines.
