«una rara versione per pianoforte e quintetto d’archi»
Text from the official Cultura Roma Capitale page (service translation: “a rare version for piano and string quintet”), source
«Ritratto d’autore: Johannes Brahms» is the third date of the series «Ritratto d’autore», curated by the Roma Tre Orchestra. The program is the Concerto No. 1 in D minor for piano and orchestra, Op. 15, by Johannes Brahms, presented in a rare version for piano and string quintet.
It is one of the first great works of Johannes Brahms, and it already shows the ability to combine emotional intensity and solidity of form. The soloist is never simply the protagonist: he dialogues constantly with the ensemble, in a relationship made of contrasts, listening and exchange.
The three movements cross different atmospheres. The first has strong dramatic tension and a broad, monumental pace. The central Adagio is more intimate and withdrawn, dominated by lyricism and delicacy. The Finale brings back energy and movement, up to an intense and vital conclusion in which passion and rigor meet.
The chamber version lets you hear the relationship between piano and strings up close and grasp the details of the writing more immediately. The performance is entrusted to the Roma Tre Orchestra Ensemble and to Paolo Ehrenheim at the piano.
The series «Ritratto d’autore» has dates on October 7, November 12, January 12 and February 16, in the 2026-2027 season of the Teatro di Roma. On November 12 the protagonist is Igor Stravinsky, as you can read in the page on Ritratto d’autore: Igor Stravinsky.
The Teatro Torlonia stands in the park of Villa Torlonia in Rome. It was commissioned by Prince Alessandro Torlonia, completed in 1874, reopened to the public on December 7, 2013 after restoration, and today is part of the Fondazione Teatro di Roma.
Other titles at the hall are Archimede with Mario Incudine and Il teatro dell’amore e del potere. The children’s show Ode alla vita takes place in November.
Full price is 15 euros and reduced is 10 euros. The price is 8 euros for Roma Tre Orchestra members and Roma Tre students.
